Diesel Variants of Etios and Etios Liva launched, prices starts from 6.44 lacs and 5.54 lakh respectively

Toyota-Etios-Liva-diesel
Toyota Kirloskar Motors, though a late entrant in the entry level Indian car market, launched only the petrol versions of Etios Sedan and Liva hatchback. However, the Etios Sedan and Liva hatchback received bookings more than Toyota had dreamt off; it soon turned into a nightmare as soon the intial bookings dropped because of Tsunami that hit Japan and recent fuel hikes in India and so on.

Just when things started looking gloomy, Toyota got back to the drawing board, recharted its course in India, bounced back with a bang, and launched diesel variants of the Etios sedan and Liva hatchback last Friday.

While the Etios Diesel sedan is priced at the range of 6.44 lakh – 7.87 lakh ex showroom Delhi and is available in GD, GD (SP), VD and VXD grades, the Etios Liva Diesel is priced at 5.54 lakh ex showroom Delhi and is available in GD and GD(SP) grade.

Both Etios sedan and Liva hatchback are powered with a refined 1.4 litre D-4D Common Rail Diesel Engine that generates maximum power of 67 bhp @ 3800 rpm and highest torque of 170 NM @ 1800 – 2400 rpm. Toyota’s D-4D technology, the most advanced diesel technology offered by Toyota, used in Innova, Corolla Altis, Fortuner, Prado and LC 200 has earned a reputation the world-over for its high quality, durability and reliability.

The 1.4 litre D-4D Common Rail Diesel Engine with intercooler offers an ideal combination of excellent driving performance and best- in – class mileage. The high performance engine of the Etios provides flat torque leading to less gear shifting finally resulting in improved fuel efficiency. The generous levels of torque from 1800 rpm also offers excellent initial and in – gear passing acceleration. The engine recorded a best – in – class mileage of 23.59 kmpl, as certified by ARAI.

The cars similar to its petrol variants are being offered in a range of vibrant colours such as Symphony silver, Serene Bluish Silver, Celestial Black, Harmony Beige, Vermilion Red, White and Ultramarine Blue (only in Etios Liva). The exteriors and interiors of the petrol variant have been carried over to the diesel variant.

Speaking at the launch, Mr. Hiroshi Nakagawa, Managing Director, TKM said “Etios has been received well by our customers in the petrol segment. We are now offering diesel variant to cater to wider customer choice. The diesel variant will provide our customers fuel economy with high performance. I would like to thank all our customers for their patronage and we look forward to delighting our customers with the ‘Q’ Class Experience.”

Mr. Sandeep Singh, Deputy Managing Director, Marketing, TKM said “We are glad to widen the product range available to our customers. The alternative fuel options are being offered in response to customer feedback, however we would like to educate the customer in order to enable them to make the right choice of fuel, subject to the usage of the vehicle. The customers have accepted the Etios and Etios Liva well, we have more than 33,000 happy customers. We are thankful to our customers for the encouraging response.”

Diesel Cars to Rule Indian Auto Market

diesel cars
Petrol or diesel, it has always been a much debated topic amongst the car buyers. If you have always argued for petrol, then you will be surely taken aback to know that experts believe that diesel cars are going to rule the Indian auto market by 2013.

Once considered frugal and lousy, diesel cars are now fast taking over their petrol counterparts, thanks to the skyrocketing price of liquid gold. According to a report in The Economic Times, the sales of diesel cars have already been growing faster than petrol cars over the last few years. Due to the exorbitant price of petrol and the widening difference between the price of petrol and diesel it seems that diesel cars are going to rule the market in the coming few years.

Thus, automakers are prompted to concentrate more on the diesel versions. Shashank Srivastava, chief GM (sales & marketing) at Maruti Suzuki India said, “I expect diesel percentage to be significantly higher. It can be as high as 45-50 per cent over the next three-to-four years.”

The lower maintenance cost of the diesel cars along with the lower fuel cost (compared to petrol) have given confidence to both buyers and automakers to bet on the diesel cars.

Neeraj Garg, director of sales at Volkswagen Passenger Cars is super optimistic with diesel cars and commented “Diesel can be half of the total car market even before three-to-four years. The fuel is growing very strongly and has taken even us by surprise, forcing us to produce more of diesel.” Garg further added, “While the price differential is forcing people to look at diesel, the engine refinement and advancement is also something that makes them go for the fuel.”

Indian automakers are thus expected to make a paradigm shift and come up with new improved diesel versions of their hot selling cars. GM will get a diesel version of the Beat hatchback while Tata is planning to launch a diesel version of their popular Nano.

Toyota Kirloskar Motors also might hasten the launch of the diesel variants of the Toyota Etios Sedan and the soon-to-be launched Toyota Etios Liva Hatchback. Hyundai is setting up a diesel engine plant, while companies like Maruti, and Ford are improvising their diesel engines for higher performance. Even traditional petrol engine makers like Honda is planning to launch diesel versions for their Indian customers.

However, the radical change in strategy comes from Renault who has priced the diesel version of their Fluence Sedan much lower than the petrol variant, which is for the first time in India. These changes in strategies of the Indian automakers are a clear indication that diesel cars are going to rule the Indian automobile market in the next few years.

Toyota Takes Steps to Reduce Waiting Period for Etios

Toyota-Logo-Front-Car
Toyota Kirloskar Motors recently announced that it is taking active steps to bring down the waiting period for the Etios to half of the current situation.

This will be realized through various steps including starting of second shift production, changes to take time (production time per vehicle), production enhancement and postponement of the launch of Hatchback – Etios Liva from April to June – all reflecting the increasing demand for the Etios. Car Sales Growth May Decline in 2011

Cars in India
While we were still coming to terms with the increased prices of cars and onions, we got another blow: the hike in petrol prices. And the timing could not have been worse than this for the auto industry which already fears a sharp decrease in car sales due to rising interest rates and pinching inflation. And, the final blow would come when the Union Budget 2011 would be read two months later. Chances are that the government would increase the excise duty on small cars.

Indian car sales, which were during pretty well in 2010 with more than 30% growth, might be in for some serious trouble. Industry analysts and officials are of the view that the negatives are fast gaining strength and look set to dampen sentiments. “We are concerned. The sentiment is getting affected and the three negative factors combined will be detrimental for growth,” said Mayank Pareek, managing executive officer (sales and marketing) at Maruti Suzuki.

While rising fuel bills have affected the running cost of the vehicle, the inflation has led to bad sentiments in the market. “We will have to wait and watch to understand the real impact from these factors which will be really felt over the next few months,” he said. The rising costs of petrol (prices have gone up by about Rs 11 since June last year) deter people from using their cars on a regular basis and eventually from buying new cars.

Sandeep Singh, deputy MD at Toyota Kirloskar Motors, agreed with Pareek and said that the situation could get very serious in the coming months. “We are concerned about these issues. Rising petrol prices, higher input costs and repeated increases in interest rates would dampen the growth prospects,” Singh said, adding that the industry would now look at directions from the Union Budget.

Another thing to worry is the increasing interest rates on car loans. After holding steady for about 8-9 months, the interest rates have started to become tighter and have increased by about 3 percentage points in the last four months. And the government’s futile attempts to restrain inflation are going to result in the interest rates going further higher.

The cumulative effect of these negative factors means that you need not only a lot of money to purchase a vehicle but also to maintain it.

Toyota on the 1st of January 2011 announced the bookings for Fortuner. It must be noted that the bookings for Fortuner had last been opened in July 2010 for a period of one month.

“The impressive sales recorded by the Fortuner speak of how well it has been received by our customers. Competitive price, powerful engine, exterior styling and a fulltime 4WD makes it a popular buy among SUV owners. The Fortuner has been widely accepted by the masses – individuals, families, corporates and businessmen. The current backlog of around 3000 units will be cleared in about three months. Toyota Etios sedan launched

DSC_0354 copy
The much-hyped Toyota Etios sedan was finally launched on first of December in Bangalore. The first thing that strikes a chord with every car buyer is the very aggressive price at which the car was launched. The Toyota Etios sedan starts at Rs 4.96 Lakh for the base J variant, Rs 5.46 Lakh on the G, Rs 5.96 Lakh on the G optional, Rs 6.41 Lakh on the V and Rs 6.86 Lakh for the top end VX variant (Ex-showroom Delhi).

The Etios sedan will boast of a 1.5-litre, 16-valve DOHC engine that will pump out 89 bhp of raw power and 132 NM of torque. Currently, a 5-speed manual tranny is pushed into service of the car but Toyota could well bring in an automatic transmission soon. The car is well built to accommodate five Indian adults comfortably. The striking feature of the car is that the car is the lightest in its class at 930 kgs and has the biggest boot in its class (595 liters) as well. And for the frequently popped out question of “Average Kitna Deta Hai ?”, the answer is 17.6 kmpl (ARAI tested). How cool can that be for the cost conscious Indian.

DSC_0467 copy

The people at Toyota can heave a sigh of relief as none of the direct competitors of the Etios i.e, Maruti Suzuki Swift Dzire, Mahindra Renault Logan or Tata Indigo Manza can boast of a 1.5-litre engine. But yes, Toyota should still consider a diesel option for its Etios to take the market by storm.

If these above mentioned facts would not interest you, you have some other special features in the offering such as under body protection to prevent damage to fuel and brake lines, Anti-corrosion steel sheets at areas prone to rusting and stone hits and chipping resistant paint on rocker mould and fender. There is a class-first ‘Clean air filter’ which is standard across all variants for purified air in the cabin, a spacious 13 L cooled glove box and seven one litre bottle holders to name a few.

The safety of the car is un-compromised and matches the European safety standards. Some of the various safety features present in the car are Energy absorbing body shell, Driver and passenger air bags and ABS with EBD.

Toyota now with the launch of the Etios, enters the mass volume segment as it aims to sell 70,000 units of Etios in India per annum. The dealer network would also be drastically increased to 150 by the end of 2010 to cater to the mass market.

We spent five years developing the Etios.” He also added, “We at Toyota sat that “the road makes the car”. And the Etios is the product of real-world testing on roads throughout India.”
