Thomas Chacko Completes His Dream Project Of A Nationwide Expedition In A Tata Nano

Ever wondered how it would be to travel around the country in a Nano? The 63-years old motoring enthusiast from Kochi, Thomas Chacko, has made this unimaginable task possible!

Mr. Thomas has covered 26,500 km in 78 days covering 100 towns and cities in India. He has started the expedition on May 03, 2012 from Mumbai and drove the Nano to India’s extreme reaches. In the East he drove till Tawang, in the South till Kanyakumari, in the West he drove till Dwarka and in the North he went to Kargil and also ascended to Khardung La( 18380 ft. high) and Tanglang La both of which are in Ladakh. Khardung La and Tanglang La are the highest and second highest motorable roads in the world respectively. He had also been to Nagpur and Bhutan.

Mr. Chako, on concluding his journey said “I chose the Tata Nano for this journey because it is the car that has put India on the world motoring map. It also has very good ground clearance and climbs well. The journey was not a joyride but an expedition to explore the country and know the people. The 78-day all India drive has tested the Nano across the some of the most rugged terrains of the country and through all kinds of weather. The car emerged successful in this test of endurance. The Nano is a dream project. It is every person’s aspiration to own a car and the Nano fulfills this dream. In a way, this small wonder has fulfilled my dream to explore India”.

“This journey has indeed been an achievement and a book is very much on the cards. It would perhaps be named Mano et Nano: India to its farthest reaches”, he added.

Nano, the frugally engineered road car, has proved to be a triumph of somewhat homegrown engineering as some of the parts used in Nano may not have been developed or produced in India. In many car rallies and expeditions undertaken by Tata Motors or by the customers on their own, Nano has been a thrilling surprise and had shown robustness and reliability. These expeditions help the customers to understand and experience the brand. So the company will continue to encourage these rallies and expeditions.

Replacements may set Tata Motors back by Rs 110cr

2012-tata-nano-photo
Though the face lifted 2012 Tata Nano has already hit the country, Tata Motors’ woe with the previous version of the Nano has not yet come to a full stop. Just last week, Tata Motors has recalled about 1.39 lakh units of the Nano to replace the faulty starter motor. But Tata Motors insists that the exercise is not a recall. This exercise would set back Tata Motors’ finances to the tune of about Rs 110 crore.

Tata Motors, last year in the month of November 2010 had recalled about 70,000 Nanos after several random incidents of fire gutting down the Nanos was reported. Back then, Tata Motors had installed fire safety devices in the recalled Tata Nano free of cost.

The 2012 edition of the Tata Nano promises a powerful engine with better fuel efficiency and a host of new features, but with no increased price.

Tata Nano becomes a flaming issue for Tata Motors

A-Tata-Nano-on-fire-in-Chennai
Tata Nano seems to be a jinxed product for Tata Motors right from the start. Ratan Tata’s dream of making India mobile through the Tata Nano, has hit rough weather ever since the car was launched.

As soon as the car was launched in India, environmentalists cried foul stating the carbon footprint the car would leave behind in India if the car was mass produced. Then came the next biggest salvo against the Tata Motors, the farmer’s agitation to close down the Nano factory in Singur. Soon Tata Motors had to set up an alternate production unit for the Nano at Sanand in Gujarat.

Just when Tata thought it could heave a sigh of relief as the deliveries of the car began, the problems such as dwindling car sales and flaming Nanos began to crop up. Tata Motors soon issued a press statement giving a clean chit to the Nano describing the burning Nanos were some isolated incidents. Tata Motors, watchful of the trend recalled the Nanos to fix a faulty combination switch and insulated the engine compartment of the Nano. In the process the Nanos were updated with ECU software to avoid over cranking of the engine. Despite this quickfix solution, we still have heard and seen a lot of Nanos burning.

Probably, this is one of the reasons behind the dwindling sales of the Nano. Or else how would you explain the cheapest car available in India not burning the sales graphs. Just day before yesterday, a Nano was gutted in Chennai and even before the fumes could settle down we hear another Nano going up in flames in New Delhi.

It is high time Tata Motors gets back into the drawing board fix the niggling problem before the Nano could dent the Tata’s image permanently.

Tata Nano enters Nepal at an introductory price of Rs 5 lakh

Tata-Nano-Nepal
Nano is going places already. First, it was Srilanka and now it is Nepal. The world’s cheapest car was launched in Nepal on Sunday with an introductory price of NRS 7.98 (almost Rs.5 lakh). Sipradi Trading, Tata’s exclusive dealer in Nepal for almost four decades, is retailing the car in Nepal through 14 outlets in 11 cities. Sipradi Trading is also the second largest company in Nepal with an annual turnover of NRS 1,000 crore last year.

The introduction of Tata Nano in Nepal is yet another chapter in Ratan Tata’s dream of making the car affordable for global audience. This move of Tata’s might be a big blow to the current existing cheapest car in Nepal, the Maruti 800.

A gleaming yellow Nano Standard was unveiled in the capital by Johnny Ommen, Tata Motors‘ chief of international business, passenger vehicles, and Siddhartha S.J.B. Rana, executive chairman of Sipradi Trading. The introductory offer would be open for 10 days with the delivery of the first consignment scheduled in July-end. The prices of the Nano unlike India, where it varies from state to state, would be a single price for a model.

The Tata Nano, besides the fuel efficiency and safety features, will be the first car in Nepal to come with a four-year warranty for 90,000 km. The price escalation of the Nano in Nepal is due to a whopping tax of 240 per cent, which includes 76 percent customs duty, 60 percent excise duty, 13 percent value addition tax, 5 percent road tax as well as an annual NRS 16,500 road tax.

NEPA0001

Though the sum is quite astronomical for a Nano, the car is still the cheapest car in Nepal at the moment and like Indians, the target segment is the Nepalese who want to graduate to a car from their two-wheeler. The feedback for the Nano have been flowing since Tata Nano went on Nepal Yatra this month and there have been over 5000 queries already.

Sipradi Trading has tied up with 10 Nepali banks to offer car loans to buyers. While the Standard model can be booked with a down payment of NRS 10,000, the balance of payment could be made through five years at easy monthly instalments of NRS 11,111. The Nano CX can be booked for NRS 20,000 and the Nano LX for NRS 30,000.

Bhutan, the Bhuddist kingdom, might be next in line to have a Nano being driven on its roads if everything falls in place.

Tata Nano Covered in Pop Art Imagery Finds a Place at Indian Art Summit

Tata-Nano-Turned-into-Art-by-SICIS-2
The cutesy Nano got a little extra peppier when Singapore-based Suman Aggarwal’s Indigo Blue Art and Ms. Ketna Patel, a Singapore based renowned artist, decided to present their pop art imagery through the people’s car. The Nano art work will be displayed at the Indian Art Summit, which will be held from January 20 to 23, 2011 at the Pragati Maidan in New Delhi.

The art imagery created by Ms. Ketna Patel has been pasted on the Tata Nano is Mosaic style by SICIS, the world leader in Mosaics. To recapture the atmosphere and energy of the Indian streets, the Tata Nano has been designed with pop coloured mosaics of SICIS’s Murano Collection in a dose of psychedelia.

Much similar to the method employed by the artisans of the Byzantine period, SICIS has brought the mosaic artwork on the Tata Nano at its factory in Italy. Creating the artwork on the Nano took almost 4 months and has helped the car to be converted into a symbolic ‘Jewel for the masses’.

Indigo Blue Art exhibition named ‘Stop, Indians ahead’ aims to enrich dialogue between one of today’s Indian Diaspora artist amidst a flourishing contemporary art scene in India.

“A marriage of art and utility, Ketna’s idea is to encourage the viewer to make an appraisal of received ideas filtered down to us through our media saturated conditioning and rampant consumer culture,” Aggarwal said.

Tata-Nano-Turned-into-Art-by-SICIS-1

Ketna Patel has tried to capture the changing nature of the heritage and culture of the streets. The artist has tried to record images of various street hawkers, road signs and even people on the Tata Nano. But you might ask: Why Tata Nano and not some other car? So here is the answer: Ketna chose Tata Nano because the small car has become a metaphor for a rapidly changing India.

The Indian Art summit is the largest annual art fair in India and is currently in its third year. The fair will attract more than 200 artists whose artwork will be on display. Along with the art fair, you can also see a sculpture park, video lounge, curated art projects, life performances, elaborate speaker forums, an art store and a range of exciting collateral events. Some of the most popular works presented at the gala include the likes of Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse, Salvador Dali, Damien Hirst and Anish Kapoor along with seminal works by Indian modern artists like Subodh Gupta and Bharti Kher, among others.

Tata Motors to Launch Nano Diesel in September 2011

Tata_Nano
Pushing more and more Tata Nanos on Indian consumers has become the sole obsession with Tata Motors right now, or so it seems. And the Indian company seems to be going at it like never before. After the Tata Nano sales fell down miserably, Tata Motors came up with some outstanding marketing and finance strategies to boost up the sales. Not surprisingly, the Nano sales shot up to a healthy 5,784 units in Dec 2010 compared with a meager 509 units sold in Nov 2010.

Alright, enough about Tata Nano sales now. Here is something more interesting and it does not talk about boring sales numbers. Word has it that Tata Motors is planning to launch the diesel version of the Tata Nano in September 2011. This news seems to be pretty reliable as it comes from the vendors associated with the Tata Nan. As we all know that the Nano banks heavily on its tiny price tag, and the diesel variant of the car, with its price range of Rs. 1.8 – 2.2 lakh, would maintain that too.

Most likely, the engine for the Nano would be in the 600cc-700 cc range like the current petrol (623 cc). The Tata Nano diesel, if launched with a sub 1 liter engine, will be the smallest and cheapest diesel car in the Indian market. And people who are really agitated with the ever increasing petrol prices would kill to purchase a diesel car this cheap.

Sources reveal that while Honeywell has developed the world’s smallest turbo system for the Nano diesel, the smallest common rail direct injection (CRDi) system will be fitted by Bosch.

Bosch, which is major automotive components manufacturer based out of Germany, had earlier revealed that it has developed a special diesel engine in partnership with Tata Motors for the small car. We all know that a decade ago Tata Motors started the trend of small size diesel engines with its 1.2 litre Tata Indica. And we have seen the success that Maruti Suzuki achieved with the 1.3 litre Multijet diesel engine from Fiat featured in the Maruti Suzuki Swift, Ritz and Swift Dzire.

Maruti’s strongest line up of cars consist of the Alto, the world’s largest selling small car (2010), Wagon R and Eeco, but none of these models have a diesel variant. With the launch of the diesel Nano with an engine capacity below 1000 cc, Tata Motors will be writing another success story after Indica.

Open sales of Tata Nano extended across India

tata-nano-car
It seems like the December 2010 sales of the Tata Nano has instilled new hope in its makers as they are now gearing to sell the World’s cheapest car throughout India. After the sales of the Nano had skidded southwards in the month of November 2010, Tata brought out all the tricks in the book to try and sell the Nano. The trick of the marketing division of Tata Motors seems to have worked out as they have come out with an impressive result in December 2010.

However, to capitalise on the trend of growing car sales, Tata Motors on Monday announced open sales of the Tata Nano in all the remaining states of India. The car was thus far freely available in 12 states. Customers across the country, who are desirous of driving home a Tata Nano but had not booked the car during 2009, will now be able to purchase a Tata Nano from the company’s 874 sales outlets in India.

As mentioned earlier Tata Motors’ Marketing division is doing overtime and has come out with innovative ways to sell the Nano. Tata Nano now comes with a 4-year / 60,000-km (whichever is earlier) manufacturer’s warranty, at no extra cost. In addition, customers have the option to avail of a comprehensive maintenance contract at only Rs. 99 per month. This contract will help take care of running maintenance of the car.

Tata Motors Finance (TMF), which provides finance for all Tata Motors vehicles, has launched a special Tata Nano finance scheme, under which a customer can get up to 90% loan with select documents in just 48 hours. Besides, Tata Motors has tied up with 28 banks and NBFCs to offer customers loans for purchasing the Tata Nano at attractive rates of interest.

The queries of small car’s saftey concern have also been answered. The company claims that in a recent Customer satisfaction studies conducted on the current Tata Nano owners indicate that over 80% are satisfied or very satisfied with the car, because of it being small yet spacious, its performance, maneuverability, durability, mileage and safety. Some owners have taken their Tata Nanos on countrywide trips or to altitudes like Khardungla, the world’s highest motorable road.

Besides its dealership showrooms, the company is setting up Special Nano Access Points for customers in the hinterlands to experience, test-drive or test-ride the car.

Lets hope to see more Tata Nanos zooming past us in the coming days.
