Big B unveils DC Design’s ‘budget supercar’ Avanti at the 2012 Auto Expo

Indian Supercar anyone? That’s exactly what came out from the DC design this Auto Expo. The sleek looking car named Avanti was unveiled at the 11th Auto Expo by none other than Bollywood celebrity Amitabh Bachchan yesterday. For those drooling over the prospects of owning this car, yes, it is so very possible. All you have to do is shell out Rs 30 lakh and the Indian DC Avanti Supercar is all yours.

DC Design is India’s reputed design firm noted for their concept cars and prototypes and is headed by Dilip Chhabria. Going back to the DC Avanti, the supercar is named after the Studbaker Avanti that appeared in Tintin comics. The Avanti also competes for the title of being the most affordable supercar in the planet.

DC Avanti sports a Ford Ecoboost turbocharged 4-cylinder engine pumping out 265bhp and 270 Ib-ft torque for now. But later the car would get a 400 bhp turbo V6 Honda engine under the hood. Now with that kinda power, the car might be a supercar material. The Avanti weighs around 1560 kgs but that does not make the car go any slower than the other supercars available around. The numbers speak for the car and with just 6 seconds to reach the hundred mark, this car is certainly quick. Did we also mention that Avanti can reach a top speed of more than 250 kmph but is limited electronically. The engine is paired with a 6-speed dual clutch transmission system. The car rides on 19” alloys. The engine and its ancillaries are all Euro 4 & 5 compliant. It could also be taken further to the incoming Euro 6 legislation with a slight change in the engine mapping characteristics.

The car apart from being the world’s cheapest supercar also holds another rare distinction to itself. The car is the first car from DC Design to be mass produced. Yes, you read it right, Mass produced and the production will start by 2013. The final assembly would be done at DC Design’s all new production facility coming up at Talegaon near Pune.

DC Avanti AB DC unveiling

During the unveiling ceremony of DC Avanti, Mr Dilip Chhabria said, “We are extremely ecstatic to present the DC Avanti today and it is a manifestation of not just the burgeoning interest in high end sports cars but also as a calling card for our own capabilities which have now progressed from mere styling in the early days to full prototyping and bespoke one-off manufacturing. Every country which has written its name in the pantheon of automobile manufacturing has invariably distinguished itself with sports cars by its own nationals and I thought that India rightly needs to be in this exclusive club.”

He also added “We intend to produce 300 units of the Avanti in 2013-2014 and if all goes well we could ramp up production to go into four figures per annum. Till now DC Design was noted for its design and customization but then we added complete engineering and prototyping to our roster of services and working for the world’s biggest names helped us understand and add to our expertise”. He further stated, “The Avanti is an ongoing culmination of all that we have learnt and we intend to give a sports car to a select new emerging breed of car buyers who value good taste without compromising on performance and who don’t need to spend a fortune on making the adrenaline flow”.

The DC Avanti will feature a light weight but very strong space frame chassis using a mix of square, rectangular and round sections to get the best strength and rigidity across the dynamic spectrum. Since this is a supercar, we can expect the suspension to be good as well. Agile, quick and ultra-responsive, the Avanti promises performance and visual erotica at a cost to quality proposition that will be second to none. Hydraulically assisted rack and pinion steering gear will be standard fitment. The Avanti will be equipped with many safety features like ABS (anti-lock braking system), SRS air bag technology.

The Avanti’s low slung silhouette is pure excitement with a combination of pleasingly complex concave and convex surfaces to deliver great form. Avanti will be available at the DC dealerships across five metros in India (Delhi, Mumbai, Pune, Chennai and Hyderabad). An additional four outlets would also be opened in the course of 2012. Bookings will open soon, immediately after Auto Expo 2012, on a first-come-first-served-basis with deliveries scheduled from the last quarter of calendar 2013. Have you booked your Avanti already?

Ford brings global EcoBoost powertrain technology to India

Today When Ford India unveiled the EcoSport compact SUV for the first time, it also did bring in just more than the car. The American car major also brought the famed EcoBoost powertrain technology to India.

Ford India is bringing in its global EcoBoost powertrain technology to India for the first time in the form of its newest and smallest-ever EcoBoost engine. With only three cylinders and 1.0 litre of displacement, the latest EcoBoost engine will provide fuel-efficient power for the all-new Ford EcoSport. Despite its small capacity and proportions, the engine delivers power and performance that will shame a traditional 1.6-litre petrol engine while emitting less than 140g/km CO2. It will have 120 PS of power and 170 NM of torque and will be mated to a five-speed manual transmission, giving the Ford EcoSport a footprint that is small enough for urban driving yet robust enough for a trip out of the city.

The new 1.0-litre is the latest addition to Ford’s global family of EcoBoost engines, which currently range in capacity from 1.6 to 3.5 litres. Downsized EcoBoost engines feature turbocharging, direct injection and other technologies and replace larger engines with no loss of performance and with lower fuel consumption. Ultimately, this all-new engine will be made available in Ford models in China, Europe, North America and other regions.

“The capable EcoSport is a perfect showcase for the advanced small-displacement petrol engine, demonstrating the strength and breadth of Ford’s development and engineering capabilities,” said Joe Bakaj, vice president, Global Powertrain Engineering. He also stated that the 1.0-litre EcoBoost delivers great low-speed responsiveness, power, torque and smoothness. To produce an engine with such impressive performance and fuel economy clearly reflects our commitment to be class-leading in fuel economy around the world.

Developed at Ford’s Dunton Technical Centre in the U.K., this direct-injected EcoBoost engine features a new compact, high performance turbocharger design. The extremely fast response of the turbocharger and its ability to reach nearly 250,000 rpm results in virtually no turbo lag and peak torque of 170 Nm from 1,300-4,500 rpm.

The all-new EcoBoost engine also features an exhaust manifold cast into the cylinder head, which lowers the temperature of the exhaust gases and in turn enables the engine to run with the optimum fuel-to-air ratio across a wider rev band. An advanced “split cooling” system reduces fuel consumption by warming the engine more quickly and – unique to the 1.0 engine – cast iron has been selected for the block, reducing the amount of energy needed for warm-up by up to 50 percent compared with aluminium.

Intelligent ancillaries such as a variable air-conditioning compressor and oil pump also reduce demand on the engine – improving economy and emissions – while special coatings for engine components and intricate development of engine geometry result in minimal frictional losses.
Like its larger-capacity siblings, the 1.0-litre EcoBoost engine will use twin independent variable camshaft timing (Ti-VCT) to further improve performance and economy. Ford has also employed an all-new camshaft actuator to speed up response times without sacrificing durability.

The EcoBoost engine is undoubtedly smooth and refined as emphasis has been given on the development of an engine which is smooth yet gives a refined performance. Engine refinement is improved thanks to an innovative design that immerses the two main engine drive belts in oil – resulting in quieter and more efficient running but with the durability of a chain. Careful attention has also been paid to mitigating the natural vibrations of the three-cylinder design.

Rather than employ the traditional method of adding energy-draining balancer shafts, Ford engineers have deliberately “unbalanced” the flywheel and pulley to offset the engine configuration. Ford believes these innovations combined with optimised engine mounts will deliver a truly refined performance feel perfected during 720,000 kilometres of tests – including 360,000 kilometres of durability trials and 10,000 kilometres of environmental testing.

“Fitted with a long list of innovative technologies, the 1.0-litre EcoBoost is one of the most technically advanced and efficient engines Ford has ever designed and produced,” said Bakaj. “This new engine demonstrates Ford’s laser focus on improving fuel economy without compromising performance. It will be an engine that not only surprises and delights our customers but also offers them great value in the lower cost of ownership.”

Ford unveils EcoSport SUV in India

Ford EcoSport Unveil
Ford India just unveiled its EcoSport SUV in India and we did stream the proceedings live as we had earlier stated. The Ford EcoSport marks the entry of the second product from the Global One Ford product line out of the slated 8 models. The first from the One Ford product line up was the Ford Fiesta.

Ford Motor Corporation following the new “Kinetic Design Language” has also extended the design language towards the Ford EcoSport too. The design the EcoSport wears is also called the tear drop design which again is an extension of the Kinetic design philosophy. The EcoSport features an inverted trapezoidal grille that gives a strong and proud look. The design itself imparts a visually premium feel reflecting customer aspirations.

Though the Ford Ecosport classifies in to the SUV category, it is best described as Compact Utility Vehicle (CUV) because of its diminutive size, a far cry from the regular SUV’s size. The CUV will be showcased at the 2012 Delhi Auto Expo.

The Ford EcoSport CUV will feature the famed 1.0liter EcoBoost petrol engine, a diesel option of the same is on the works and will soon see the light of the day. Ford EcoSport SUV is essentially based on the B-Platform, the very same platform which the all-new Ford Fiesta Sedan is based on. As we had mentioned earlier, the Ford EcoSport will be powered by a 1.0 litre EcoBoost petrol engine, which also features turbocharging, direct injection and variable valve timing technology which translates as both powerful and fuel efficient. The green brigade also can heave a sigh of relief as the emissions emitting from this engine is quite low. You will read more on the Ford EcoBoost engine in our other blog.

Though we have not got the dimensions figures of the Ford EcoSport yet, but we presume that the CUV will certainly be well within 4 meters in length and will qualify for a tax rebate that Indian government has already set aside. This also means that the Ford EcoSport will be well within everyone’s reach. Again, if we look at the broader picture, Ford with its EcoSport will fleece other car makers of their livelihood and could also become a mass volume player.
The Ford EcoSport was launched in the presence of Alan Mullaly, Ford’s global CEO. He was here when the Figo was launched at the same venue couple of years ago. His presence can only mean one thing…Ford EcoSport is the next Figo in the making…

Ford EcoSport features a fresh design which is unboxy, friendly and contemporary. The EcoSport, Ford claims, is an urban SUV which is “Ready to work and Ready to play”. Top Ford executives who were at the launch also did say that the Ford EcoSport was “Right sized and Right Shaped”. The design of the Ford EcoSport makes it look macho and gives the driver a commanding view. The Ford EcoSport can boast of an imposing stance which emphasizes ruggedness and yet indicates a sleek in profile look.

During the launch, the Ford executives also touched base on many other points. Amongst the interesting ones were that Ford India, when it inaugurates its Sanand plant, will create 5000 new jobs in the process. They also mentioned that the Ford was committed to come out with innovative cars for the small car markets that are more aspirational. The products, be it engines of cars that will be produced in India’s Sanand or Chennai plant, will reach not only India but beyond. Ford India aspires to produce 4,44,000 cars annually by 2014 in India. With the rate Ford India is catching u with other major players, we just hope that Ford India reaches that goal.

The Ford EcoSport is making its global debut tomorrow morning during the Auto Expo. Stay tuned to We promise to bring in lots more …
