Fiat may bring Sedici to India

2010-Fiat-Sedici-Performance-
Fiat India, despite having some rightly priced gorgeous cars in its portfolio, is sailing through a rough patch, thanks to the dwindling car sales. Fiat India to keep its ship afloat, has devised some plans and programmes that could be implemented very soon in the Indian market.

First things first, Fiat is contemplating to introduce a compact SUV in the Indian market. This particular move by Fiat seems smart now if everything goes right for the Italian major. It must be noted that the unexplored compact SUV market is the next destination for most of the automakers trying to hit gold. Fiat India also wants to become a player in the compact SUV segment and wants to bring in its Sedici compact SUV soon into India.

Fiat-Sedici--Front-Side-

Fiat Sedici is a product built by Suzuki Motors on the SX4 platform at its facility in Hungary. The Sedici was first showcased by Fiat in the 2006 Geneva Motor Show. The SUV was mainly conceptualized and developed for the European market. Obviously, if the Fiat Sedici makes it way to India, expect it to be tuned to suit the Indian conditions.

Fiat India currently has a hatchback Grande Punto and sedan Linea in its portfolio apart from the iconic Fiat 500. The Italian car major, in its second outing in India has tied up with Tata Motors to retail Fiat cars in India but the idea seems to going flat somewhere. Fiat India has to get its portfolio right and now desperately wants a fuel-efficient SUV in its portfolio to partially complete its line up in India.

Fiat Sedici back

This is where Fiat Sedici comes in, as it is an SUV by nature and quite fuel efficient in that. The other important but decisive factor is the price and the Sedici fits the bill to the T as it could be kept under the Rs 7 lakhs bracket.

Apart from Fiat, Premier, the erstwhile partner of Fiat India has come out with its compact SUV named Rio in collaboration with Zoyte motors of China. Mahindra & Mahindra is already working on a compact Xylo SUV, which is likely to hit the roads next year.

Fiat 1.3L Multi-Jet Reaches 4 Million Units Production Milestone

Fiat Multi-jet engines 4000000 units produced
If there is one engine that Indians love unconditionally, it has to be the Multijet engine from Fiat. The Fiat engine has been in India for a long time now. In fact, it is so popular in our country that Fiat has sold more Multijet engines in India than its cars. Fiat scores a major portion of its profits in India by selling engines. In fact, Fiat also banked in on the popularity of this engine with the ‘Fiat Diesel Drives India’ campaign.

Just look at the trend in the Indian market: almost 95 per cent of the time, you would find a Multijet engine in a diesel hatchback. Most of the popular diesel hatchbacks as well as sedans in India, such Punto, Fiat 500, Linea, Palio, Ritz, Swift, Swift DZire, Vista, Manza, and the soon-to-be-launched diesel SX4, feature the Fiat Multijet engine.

Even the Chevrolet Beat is expected to feature the revered 3-cylinder Multi-jet engine (chopped-block), to be launched later this year.

All right, we are done with the background of the engine. The Fiat Multijet engine has now clocked another big milestone. The Italian company has announced that the 4 millionth 1.3 16v Multijet engine has left the plant in Bielsko Biala, Poland, on February 4, 2011.This 4 millionth unit, fitted in a Fiat 500, has been sold to a French customer.

The Fiat Multijet engine is available in various capacities ranging from 1.3L to a much mightier 3.0L. The engine is also available in a turbocharged and a non turbocharged format. Another famous thing about the engine: in 2005, the Multijet 75 PS version was chosen as the International Engine of the Year. And considering the number of new cars coming up in the Indian market, we would not be surprised if the many more cars get their power from the Multijet engine.

Fiat Freemont to Debut at the Geneva Motor Show

fiat-freemont
We are all excited about the upcoming Geneva Motor Show, and one of the leading attractions of the show will be the Fiat Freemont that makes its debut. The car will go on sale in 2011. The Fiat Freemont is built on the base of the Dodge Journey, and is the first vehicle from the company’s partnership with the Chrysler Group. The Fiat Freemont will be manufactured in the Mexican plant of Toluca, where the Fiat 500 is produced for the US market.

The Fiat Freemont boasts of a very muscular exterior styling and a strong front end. The suspension and steering system are now more accurate and the car will also have LED lights. It is the perfect choice for people who love speed. The Fiat Freemont brings a choice of 140 horse power and 170 horse power, with manual transmission capabilities. Later, the vehicle will also come in 4×4 versions with 170 HP 2.0 MultiJet and 276 BHP 3.6 petrol V6 engines, both with automatic transmissions.

fiat-freemont-31

Other attractive features of the Fiat Freemont are attractive fog lights, a keyless entry system, touch screen radio, Bluetooth, DVD reader and most important and unique feature is parking sensors. The SUV also comes with triple-zone climate control system, roof rails and automatic headlamps and tire pressure monitoring system.

The price of the Fiat wonder is expected to be revealed at the Geneva Motor Show. Other cars competing with it are Ford Edge, Hyundai Santa Fe and Nissan Murano. As of now, it is difficult to say whether Fiat will bring this vehicle in the Indian market or not. But considering the company does not have an SUV in its portfolio, it makes sense to bring it in India.

Audi A1 heading to India

audi_a1
Here is another Audi Blog of the day. This one certainly promises to be much better than the last. We have just come across reports suggesting Audi AG might bring in its small hulk of a car, the Audi A1, to India.

Yes, the small luxury hatchback that had created ripples last year when it was for the first time launched online. We had predicted that the car would grace Indian shores back then and it seems pretty much that the time has come.

India, though a predominant budget small car market, still has loads of space to accommodate luxury hatchbacks (read Volkswagen Beetle and Fiat 500) as well. Audi A1 just fits the luxury hatchback bill to the Tee. We assume that the car will be priced around 18-20 Lakh (excluding duties) when it comes to India. This car being small and fuel-efficient might be a hit with people who have a thing or two for status.

OK, the car does not have a legendary past as that of its competitors, but that minor thing is made up with its flawless refined German engineering. Read the next para and you should be able to decide for yourself.

Audi_A1_rear

When it comes to India, the Audi A1 will probably adorn a 121 bhp 1.4 L turbocharged fuel stratified injection (TFSI) engine that will spew out a torque of 200 Nm at 1500 rpm, which can make the A1 reach from 0 to 100 kmph in just 8.9 seconds giving a top speed of 203 kmph. Want More… well A1 will get Audi’s S-Tronic 7 speed automatic transmission as well. Satisfied? Yes…the car will be available both in petrol and diesel variants.

The luxury features that come complimentary with the A1 include i-Pod connectivity, Bluetooth, sports-style multifunction steering wheel, climate control, etc. Again going by the reports we heard, the car should be here in 2011.

Do we hear “When can we book it” already…?

Tata-Fiat’s plant crosses 2,00,000-mark

Fiat Logo
Fiat India, the Indian subsidiary of the Italian auto giant has pulled a unique feat for itself. The auto major, which produces the powertrains for Fiat and Tata cars has rolled out the 2,00,000th powertrain engine from its Rajangoan plant yesterday.

Fiat India’s plant in Ranjangaon was built to manufacture enigines for Tata and Fiat Cars as well as for exporting engines to other Fiat facilities across Europe. The plant started functioning in July 2008.

“The Tata-Fiat manufacturing facility epitomises our commitment towards bringing cutting edge technology to India. The remarkable figure of 2,00,000 engines in a short span of time is a testament to the commitment of both the partners and to the tireless efforts of the team which has worked to make this a world-class facility,” Fiat India Automobiles Vice-President (Power Train Technologies) Gurpratap Boparai said in a statement.

Fait Linea

“Fiat’s powertrain engines are powering the new generation Tata cars, additionally, the engines are also being exported to other countries, which indicate that India could really be developed as a hub for the manufacture of technologically advanced engines,” Tata Motors Vice-President- Commercial (Passenger Car Business) R Ramakrishnan said.

Fiat India Automobiles is an equal joint venture between Fiat Group Automobiles and Tata Motors Limited. Fiat India sells the Grande Punto, Linea and premium hatchback Fiat 500 in India.

No Re-Launch of Fiat 500 in India?

Fiat 500 in India
Till yesterday, speculation was rife that Fiat India was looking at re-launching its iconic 500 luxury hatchback in the Indian market. However, there was no official word then. We now have something concrete. The truth is out. A Fiat spokesperson has firmly denied any plans of the company re-launching the Fiat 500.

Fiat’s official spokesperson said, “Fiat 500 has helped us tremendously in our overall branding exercise because of significant road presence of the vehicle in India. We have sold around 68 units of this model. Having said that, it is not at all true that we are relaunching this model. We may, however, roll out high-blitz marketing exercise to promote 500 heavily.”

The 500 though was launched way back in 2008, only 68 units was sold till date. That seems to be quite a pathetic figure. Yes Fiat, we agree it’s time to roll a high-blitz marketing campaign. The Cinquecento, which is popularly known as the Fiat 500, comes to India as a fully imported model. The high price seems to be the main culprit for the low sales. The two-door compact lifestyle car costs around Rs. 15 lakh (ex-showroom).

The Fiat 500 comes in 11 peppy colours. What’s special about this model is that it agrees to suffer major modifications too in order to suit the customer’s tastes and needs. The car draws power from a 1.3 litre CRDi multi-jet engine. Yes, it’s the same motor that powers the Punto, the Maruti Swift and Tata Indica Vista in India.

The other day, we heard that Fiat was aiming to hit the market with some new variants of the Fiat 500 and will allow customisation to get an advantage in the market. Thanks to Fiat, which promptly responded to the media reports, we now know that it was all false. The car was announced globally on May 5, 2006 and the first images were presented on March 20, 2007. It was launched officially on July 4, 2007 and there were around 250,000 attendees to witness the event.

Now that we know that Fiat may initiate an aggressive marketing campaign, we are beginning to wonder if it’s really gonna work. Fiat needs to simply bring down the price of the car. An auto fanatic says, “Cars like Fiat 500 are hatchback cars, will fall under the luxury hatchback segment and would carry a price tag of around Rs. 15-20 Lakh, which will make it prohibitively expensive.

Moreover the market for such cars has not been developed in the country yet. The market for such models is very niche and the Indian consumers are always looking for cheaper cars. Having said that, those have bought 500 are the ones who have already driven it in the overseas markets or already had it when they were abroad.” Well said, Mr. Auto Fanatic.

The new generation Fiat 500 which we see on the Indian roads is a city car which Fiat builds in Tychy, Poland. This new car is badged in different markets as the 500, Nuova 500 or Cinquecento. The car possesses a classic compact design and luxurious interiors with no compromise in terms of performance. What more does the Indian car market demand? Just make the price tag a little lighter, Fiat, and you will notice how things changing in your favour.

Fiat’s Twinair – The Two-Cylinder Magic

Fiat-500-Twinair-engine
Today, let’s focus on Fiat’s petite two-cylinder marvel that comes with a lot of promises. In an India ruled by traffic and pollution, this engine can work wonders. Fiat is also known for its lowest average CO2 emissions across its range in Europe. So, time to get a few more details.

The current Fiat 500 uses the four-cylinder configuration. But its ancestors, at least the lower-end variants, used a two cylinder engine. And similar is the case with our Tata Nano which uses a 636 cc two pot. These days, we also see the hatchback makers shifting from four to three cylinders for their offerings in India. With the cylinder reduction, there seem to be more pluses and fewer minuses. So far, NVH levels seem to be the only major concern.

Fiat, however, has gone a step ahead and chopped off the third cylinder too to end up with a new mini engine. We know, you must be thinking about power and acceleration loss now. Never mind. The 900cc two-cylinder motor delivers 64, 84 and 104 bhp depending on the state of tune and that’s even better than VW’s 105-bhp 1.2 TSI and Nissan’s 97-bhp Supercharged 1.2.

Fiat’s entire small car range will possibly carry this twin air engine shortly. Up to 30 per cent less fuel consumption and 30 per cent less CO2 emissions is a promise. The tiny engine features Fiat’s famed multi air technology that uses electro-hydraulic valve actuators thereby doing away with a conventional throttle valve. So, there’s no pumping loss and efficiency is improved by another 10 per cent.

BMW cars too feature a similar technology called VANOS. Making it just perfect for the crowded Indian roads, the engine comes standard with a Start-Stop system. Lesser cylinders mean lower friction among engines. A ‘soft’ turbocharger ensures virtually no turbo lag and you get instant boost. The response is stronger and delivering 100 Nm at 1900 rpm. This engine competes with Fiat’s 1.4L petrol and produces 25 per cent more torque.

Half the number of cylinders means half the number of parts which implies that maintenance too is minimal. The Twinair’s long-life spark plugs and hydraulic tappets give it an added strip of reliability. The engine is 23 per cent shorter than a conventional 4-cylinder engine which also makes it a space saver. Fiat’s two-cylinder motor has a balancer shaft to abolish the first order vibration common in two-cylinder engines. The turbocharged Twinair is also 7 kg lighter than Fiat’s 1.2L non-turbo FIRE (Fully Integrated Robotised Engine) and 13 kg lighter than the 1.4 FIRE. The 1.2 and 1.4 are the same engines found in the Grande Punto.

Fiat-Twinair-engine-1

Autocar says, the road test proved that the engine is relaxed and offers similar performance to the 1.4-litre 84-bhp version of Fiat 500. It can hit a maximum speed of 174 km/h and can accelerate to 100 kmph in just 11 seconds. The engine is believed to deliver 25 kmpl. In due course, Fiat will be making 400,000 of these engines a year at their Polish manufacturing plant.

For a country obsessed with mileage and cost, here’s the price! The Fiat 500 with Twin air currently costs £1400 (Rs 1,00,000) more than the 1.4L four-cylinder version. Pretty expensive, ah? However, two cylinders mean two lesser spark plugs, there’s lesser friction, lower maintenance costs, reduced weight and a greener environment. Fiat, however, will have to sufficiently localise and prove this engine in India to establish their superiority. We hope to see the Twinair in Fiat’s Rs. 2.5 Lakh car that will debut in 2012.

Fiat India Small Car to Take on Alto

fiat-logoAsk any Indian to name a car that has proved to be just perfect for India. With a smile, you may get answers like the Maruti 800 and the Ambassador. Iconic cars like these are slowly vanishing. Not to worry, we have new cars coming in. It’s time for a change and many car makers are now bringing in made-for-India cars. Interestingly, even Fiat India is gearing up to make a splash of its own in the country’s promising small car market by launching an India-specific car. Hyundai did it two years ago with the i10, and Ford followed by introducing the Figo exclusively for India, and now, Fiat will follow.

Fiat’s new car will make an entry in 2012. If you’re thinking the car is going to look like the Uno, let’s clarify that the new small car will not bear any resemblance to the company’s Uno model. Fiat India says that it will be an all-new car, nothing to do with any of its other models. It will be an entry-level model, priced aggressively, much below Fiat’s premium hatchback, Punto.

The Fiat small car will be pitted against the Alto and will come strapped with a one-litre engine. It will be an India-specific car, made in India, made for India, keeping in mind India’s unique terrain and temperatures. Fiat India’s R&D team has been working extremely hard to carve a car that will meet consumer needs in the best manner.

The new car will hopefully increase Fiat India’s market share from the current 1.5 per cent. The company hopes to roll out 40,000 cars in India this year. The car maker is aware of the tough competition and knows that the small car market in India is blazing. It is this competition that has led car makers to Indianize their offerings. As for Fiat, it currently offers the 500, Grande Punto, Linea and Palio Stile in India. But right now, India’s entry level car space is what excites the car maker the most.

The new car launch will certainly help the auto maker increase sales. However, auto experts feel it’s time for Fiat India to expand its service network too. Fiat will have to make sure that low-cost spares are readily available anywhere in the nation. The company has already sorted out the distribution problem with the tie up with Tata Motors, but will have to spread its authorized workshops to enhance efficient after sales service, a critical aspect in India. Experts also feel that the company will have to localize the product better than its competition.

The gossip about Fiat re-launching its Uno model sometime later this year was in the air some time back. However, due to declining sales, Fiat will have to put the car’s production on hold. Fiat also feels that the Uno brand has become rather generic in nature and the car maker is figuring out a new brand name for the car.
