General Motors (India) Launches New Chevrolet Cruze Sedan

General Motors (India) launched its next generation sedan, New Chevrolet Cruze in New Delhi on June 27th 2012. The new sedan has been priced between Rs13.85 and Rs15.67 lakhs (ex-showroom Delhi). GM earlier planned to introduce the 2013 Chevrolet Cruze which was unveiled in Korea into the Indian markets but shelved its plans subsequently by introducing a new improved engine with minor feature changes in the upgraded version. A complete makeover of the car is expected to be launched in India in early 2013.

Speaking on the occasion, Lowell Paddock, President and Managing Director, General Motors India commented, “The Cruze has received an overwhelming response from the consumers across India, since its launch in 2009. We expect the newest member of the Cruze family to continue to exceed the expectations of car buyers and stand out against the competition in its segment,”

The upgraded version of the Cruze features minor exterior changes and significant changes in performance with an engine which is a whole lot more efficient with a marked improvement in acceleration and stability. The freshly tweaked engine delivers better fuel efficiency, drivability and refinement. The exciting new sedan will allow a choice of seven colour shades including Atlantis Blue, Sand Drift Grey, Summit White, Velvet Red, Switch Blade Silver, Caviar Black and Diamond White.

The sedan, to be available in three variants will be powered by a new 2.0 litre diesel engine which generates a power of 166 bhp @ 3,800 rpm. Maximum torque of 380 Nm is produced at 2,000 rpm. The car accelerates from 0-100 kmph in just 9.5 seconds, touching a top speed of 220 kmph. The Z-series engine is mated either to a six-speed manual or automatic transmission system depending on the variant. GM plans to introduce two new variants in India, the Spark and Sail U-Va. The refreshed version of the Spark is slated to enter the market in the third quarter of 2012-2013. The Sail U-Va, expected to hit the Indian soil by the end of 2012, will be pitted against the Maruti Suzuki Swift. GM also plans to launch a multi purpose vehicle, Enjoy, by the end of 2012.

The new Chevrolet Cruze is equipped with keyless go and passive entry and passive start features, which allows the users to start or stop the engine with the push of a button. The sedan has a six-way power adjustable driver’s seat, steering mounted audio controls, 16’ alloy wheels and a dead pedal. The top end LTZ variants come with an electric sun roof, leather upholstery, leather wrapped steering wheel and gear knob apart from foldable and heated outside mirrors, rear parking assist, rain sensing wipers, cruise control on steering wheel, anti-glare rear view mirror and music streaming via Bluetooth. Safety features of the sedan include ABS and dual airbags amongst others.

GM has been observing no production day once every week due to weak demand. The sedan notched up global sales of 1,80,000 units during the first quarter of 2012, which is 20% higher than that in the corresponding quarter of 2012. The company hopes to perk up its sagging sales figures with its new launches along with those in the pipeline.

Chevrolet unveils Tavera Neo3 and Captiva 2.2 AT at Auto Expo in New Delhi

TAVERA_FRONT_3-4_STUDIO_HIRES_FINAL_V1
In the previous blog we had covered Chevrolet India’s Auto Expo plans and we also had mentioned that the vehicles are being displayed on Chevrolet’s stand under the three themes of Chevrolet Next, Chevrolet Technology & Innovation and Chevrolet Performance.
Under the theme Chevrolet Next, GM India is introducing a range of new models that will be launched in India in 2012 such as Chevrolet Tavera Neo3 and Chevrolet Captiva 2.2 AT. These two vehicles were unveiled at the Auto Expo today.

The Chevrolet Tavera Neo3 is the updated version of the popular Chevrolet Tavera. But this time around the engineers at GM have updated the Tavera extensively based on customer feedbacks. The result is the all-new Chevrolet Tavera Neo3, which combines the handling and comfort of a passenger car with the performance and ruggedness of an MUV. The Chevy Tavera Neo3 now features Chevrolet’s twin-port grille and a bigger Chevy bowtie logo in front and back. Larger shimmering crystal-effect clear lens headlamps with integrated indicator lamps enhance the bold and stylish front look while increasing visibility.

The top-end variant of the Chevrolet Tavera is now offered with a dual-tone body colour combination. Selective exterior color finishes are combined with contrasting gold bumpers and side trim. Loads of chrome gets its way into the new Tavera Neo3 imparting those premiums feel to the vehicle. Chevrolet’s “advancing diamond” pattern seamlessly blends side surfaces with bumpers for a stunning visual appeal.

The same design language has been carried forward to the interiors of the vehicle and this time around, the Chevy Tavera Neo3 gets a classic, harmonious interior with premium feel, thanks to the beige and dark grey combo which usually is present in the luxury vehicles. The “advancing diamond” motif continues inside through soft-feel cashmere upholstery with design inserts. Premium perforated leather upholstery along with seven captain seats is available. Dark grey elements move from the top of the instrument panel to the top of the door trim, providing a perfect wrap-around effect. The instrument cluster has Ice Blue illumination.

The new Tavera Neo3 is available with a 2.5-liter direct injection insta-torque turbocharged engine (BS3) and an all-new 2.0-liter common rail direct injection diesel engine that is BS4 emission compliant. Both of the engines operate quietly and have excellent low-end torque, making them excellent in heavy traffic, along with excellent pick up.

The Tavera Neo3 has low maintenance and running costs, with long service intervals, highly durable components and a long-life maintenance-free battery. Because of the Tavera Neo3’s high percentage of local content, replacement parts are competitively priced and readily available through Chevrolet’s nationwide distribution network.

The Chevrolet Captiva was launched in India at the 2008 Auto Expo. It has established a clear niche for itself in the premium SUV segment. GM India will soon launch the next-generation Captiva 2.2 AT. The new model includes a powerful 2.2-liter engine along with a six-speed automatic transmission. It also has a fresh new sporty and muscular exterior design and a jet-black interior. Among the new comfort and convenience amenities are cruise control; a dual-row heating, ventilation and air-conditioning system; an electric parking brake; rain-sensing wipers; and a stylish sunroof.

Alongside the Camaro Convertible, Corvette Stingray Concept, Cruze racing car and Captiva 2.2 AT, GM is also showing visitors the Chevrolet Cruze special show car and Chevrolet Beat that was the winner in the Adventure Category of the Raid de Himalaya 2011.

At the Chevrolet Next section, GM is also showing the all-new Chevrolet Sail hatchback and the Chevrolet MPV, which will be unveiled tomorrow, as well as the Chevrolet Beat Diesel, India’s most fuel-efficient car, and the Chevrolet Beat Music Edition.

Chevrolet Sells More Than 4.26 Million Vehicles Globally in 2010

Chvey Logo on Cruze
Chevrolet’s share of the global vehicle industry grew by 0.35 points in 2010, thanks to the amazing sales output that the company saw. Chevrolet sold more than 4.26 million vehicles globally in 2010, an average of one every 7.4 seconds. Boosted by its strong global performance in the first three quarters of 2010, Chevrolet sold more than 1.14 million vehicles in the fourth quarter.

In October 2010, people purchased 361,236 Chevrolet cars, crossovers and trucks worldwide, which show an increase of 16 percent on an annual basis. November got even better with sales of 368,103 units. December brought the perfect gift for Chevrolet with global sales of 416,826 units.

“Chevrolet’s dedication to compelling designs, quality, durability and great value is a winning formula that resonates with consumers around the world,” said Joel Ewanick, GM global chief marketing officer. “We will continue to listen to our customers and do our utmost to deliver what it takes to bring them into the Chevrolet family.”

Most of the sales in 2010 came from the BRIC countries of Brazil, Russia, India and China. These four countries together were responsible for about 33 percent of the brand’s sales, an increase of 2 percentage points over 2009.

In India, Chevrolet sales crossed 100,000 units for the first time. Total sales for the year reached an outstanding 110,350 vehicles, up 60 percent from the previous year. These milestones were achieved primarily because of the good consumer response to cars like Beat, Spark and Cruze.

Maruti Suzuki Kizashi to Come to India by 2011 January End

AMERICAN SUZUKI MOTOR KIZASHI
Well, after having to wait for like one year, we finally a see a ray of hope announcing the arrival of the Maruti Suzuki Kizashi. Rumour mill says that the sedan will be launched in the Indian market towards the last week of January 2011 (we will keep our fingers crossed till it happens). Maruti Suzuki Kizashi is the trump card that the company is counting on to compete with cars like Chevrolet Cruze, Toyota Corolla Altis and the Skoda Laura. We are all aware of the capabilities of these cars, so MSI would need to price and position this car just right.

The Maruti Suzuki Kizashi is the company’s flagship model internationally and is also the most expensive product worldwide. The Kizashi will carry the exclusivity of being the most expensive Suzuki product in India as well. The INR 10 Lakh plus segment has not really been the forte of MSI for the sole reason that this segment demands some amount of snob value, and MSI being the king of all cars small, has not been able to cut any ice with people in this category. A good example would be the Grand Vitara, which despite being a good vehicle, could not manage to shine through.

But the uphill task of luring the Indian customers might be a little easier for the Kizashi. People, who have usually stayed away from the Skoda Laura and Honda Civic, might warm up to the idea of buying the Kizashi, thanks to Maruti’s dealerships and service centres that are spread across the country.

The Maruti Suzuki Kizashi comes equipped with a 2.4 Litre petrol engine that can churn out 185 bhp of maximum power and 230 Nm of torque. Now, that’s a lot of power compared to that of Honda Civic or the Toyota Corolla. In the international market, the car is available in both manual and automatic options, but for the Indian market, Suzuki may bring the automatic transmission. The Kizashi is also available in an All Wheel Drive (AWD) variant internationally, but it is highly unlikely that this version will be launched in India.

2010_suzuki_kizashi_rear

We have learned from a reliable source that the Maruti Suzuki Kizashi will be priced lesser than the Honda Civic. This price also means that the luxury sedan would be assembled at the company’s Manesar plant in Haryana. This is one thing that the consumers would love and the competition would hate.

Chevy India to Launch Four New cars in 2011

Chevrolet Orlando
Chevrolet India upbeat with the success of its Cruze and Beat has grand plans lined up for India. Chevy India will be launching four new passenger cars in the upcoming year. Out of the four cars which Chevy plans to launch here, one is a small car, two are mid-sized cars and one SUV.

It must be noted that the GM India had inaugurated its flexi-engine plant in Talegaon where it can manufacture petrol and diesel engines on the same assembly line. We hope that the ramp up is in line with the new car models making inroads next year.

Our speculation is that the Chvey SUV would probably be the Chevrolet Orlando, while the China made Chevy sail and the new Optra could be the new sedans that Chevy is bringing in 2011. Though the hatchback version of the Chevy Sail making inroads here could well be an option, we tripped on some scoops making the rounds in the blogosphere stating Chevy was developing a smaller car that could replace the Spark, the current smallest car in Chevy India’s present line up.

Chevrolet-Sail_2011

With the Mahindra-Reva deal, the e-Spark is scrapped, and Chevrolet will just showcase its new electric car, sometime in early 2011.This will be an electric car made purely by General Motors R&D team. The Chevrolet Beat will soon be launched in LPG and diesel variants as well. The Talegaon plant will produce this new diesel engine for the Beat and this car is already in its test cycle.

Ssangyong Shows Signs of Recovery, Releases Fresh Images of Korando C

Ssangyong-Korando-C
Now that Mahindra & Mahindra has finally taken the reigns of the distressed South Korean SUV maker in its capable hands, things are moving pretty smooth for the latter. Ssangyong Motors has finally shipped its first consignment of the mid-level SUV, the Korando C from South Korea earlier this month.

Last few years, to say the least, have been anything but smooth for Ssangyong. What with the financial crunch caused by global financial crisis, and labor union strikes that made the facility look worse than a battlefield. The situation was so worse that helicopters and battalions were brought in to bring the situation under control. To top it all, the company also struggled with management restructuring, investors backing out and bankruptcy.

But, amid this entire hullabaloo, the company managed to keep itself afloat and managed to focus on development of Korando C. And finally, the company has shipped about 450 units of Korando C from the Pyeongtaek International Port in Gyeonggi for Tarragona, Spain and Antwerp, Belgium. Ssangyong is investing high hopes on the vehicle, expecting it puts the struggling automaker back on its feet.

On this glorious occasion, Lee Yoo-il, joint manager of Ssangyong, said, “The Korando C is a model that strengthens Ssangyong’s mid and long-term lineups and is a strategic model that will contribute to stabilizing the company.”

One major turning point in the history of Ssangyong has been the buy-out by M&M. The Indian SUV manufacturer has brought in the desperately needed financial liquidity in the South Korean company. The SUVs are headed for mainly Western European countries. The automaker also plans to ship 10,000 Korando C models by the end of the year and distribute its products to global customers using its strong 1,200 dealer network around the world.

“We hope to expand our global sales based on growing product demand worldwide, especially in new emerging markets such as Russia and South America,” Ssangyong said in a press release. The automaker also noted that “exports to developed markets are expected to increase as well,” which will help Ssangyong increase its market share in the overall European sports utility vehicle industry.

ssangyong_korando-c_

The Korando C is equipped with a 2.0-liter turbo diesel engine that churns out 175bhp. Advance safety features in the SUV include ABS, EBD and Airbags to name a few.

One thing for sure is that this car will definitely make it to the Indian market by 2012. The SUV is likely to be priced a little above the Mahindra Scorpio.

History has shown that most cars that are launched on the threshold of a bankruptcy emerge as the life savers for the company. The Jaguar XF did it for Jaguar, the Cruze did it for Chevrolet, the Punto and 500 did it for Fiat. Let’s just hope the Korando C does it for Sangyong as well.

Cruze Electric Cars to Hit Streets in South Korea Next Month

chevrolet-cruz-ev-2-1280
The Chevy Cruze EV demo fleet is all set to hit the roads next month. GM will be out on this demo project in collaboration with GM Daewoo, LG Chemical and LG Electronics. Electric vehicles based on the Cruze will be out on the roads exploring market needs and gauging customer response on battery EVs in Korea.

“Although there is much more work to be done, our ability to develop this vehicle in less than a year offers a peek at the very promising plans we have for our customers in Korea and around the world,” said Mike Arcamone, GM Daewoo President and CEO.

The new GM project has been aimed at strengthening the car maker’s core vehicle electrification capabilities that include batteries, electric motors, power controls and charging. Through the project, GM will be able to extract data on how well battery electric vehicles are accepted by consumers, they could study driving patterns and charging behaviour while sharing costs and resources. The demo fleets with other partners will be tested in other urban markets too later during the year.

“This Cruze EV demonstration project reinforces GM’s commitment to being a leader in the development of electric vehicles and green technologies, building on our portfolio of hybrids and the Chevrolet Volt,” said Karl Stracke, Vice President, GM Global Vehicle Engineering. “We’ll apply the learnings from this and our other demo projects to help us deliver the world’s best vehicles for our customers.”

The Cruze EV demo fleet will contain the first compact sedan EVs hitting the road. The new cars will draw power from batteries from LG Electronics’ LG Chemical and propulsion systems (motor/inverter). There would be Chevrolet Cruzes and GM Daewoo Lacetti Premieres roaming on the streets of South Korea this October. As of now, GM markets the cars under the local brand in South Korea.

“Expanding the domestic electric vehicle market carries significant meaning for collaboration between GM Daewoo and LG Chemical,” said Bahn-suk Kim, Vice Chairman and CEO of LG Chemical. “Over the past two years, we have forged a strong partnership with GM, and now we look forward to doing the same with GM Daewoo in our home country.”

The LG Chemical 31-kWh battery in the Cruze EV delivers a 201 bhp output. Battery packs usually occupy trunk space, but the electric Cruze’s battery pack has been mounted on the underbody giving the car the same trunk space as conventional vehicles with gasoline engines.

GM and LG Chemical analysis and early tests done earlier indicate that the demo vehicles could deliver a 160-km range on specific test schedules. However, the fleet will be closely monitored to find out the real-world range vehicles of that size can deliver. The electric cars will be capable of accelerating from a standstill to a hundred kmph in just about 8.2 seconds and they will hopefully demonstrate peak speeds of 165 kmph.

chevrolet-cruze-ev-1-1280

Getting to the charging, on a standard household 220-volt outlet, the electric version of the Chevy Cruze will fully recharge in about 8 to 10 hours. However, the demo fleet will test the Quick Charge application that’s gonna reduce charge time considerably.

GM has been working with LG Chemical since 2008 which is the exclusive battery cell supplier for the Chevy Volt electric vehicle with extended range. The Chevrolet Volt will enter the U.S. market later this year.

Nissan Micra Global Sales Hit the Jackpot

2010_nissan_micra
So what if Maruti Suzuki sold like more than 20,000 units of the newly launched Alto K10. Competition is lurking in every possible nook and corner and the company’s falling market shares testify the existence of competition that has been there for some time now, and competition that is rather new on the block.

Talking about new competition in the hatchback segment, Ford has already proved its credentials to the big shots in the segment. Another car manufacturer which is rather new at this game is Nissan Motors. Nissan has managed to sell 54000 units of its small car, Micra, in the global market. These sakes include bookings from Thailand, India and hometown Japan.

Nissan Motors had first launched the Micra in Thailand earlier this year. A couple of months later, the compact car made its debut in the Indian market and since then has become one of the preferred cars of consumers in India. The Nissan Micra is expected to be launched in Europe in November. The Micra is sold in other countries as the March. In Thailand market, the company received 26,000 bookings for the car.

In India, too, the car has enjoyed a fantastic start. In the month of August, the car received phenomenal sales of 1,000 units, despite the fact that Nissan has a thin dealership network in the country at present. Nissan is expected to launch the sedan and MPV version of the Micra soon. And the Japanese company aims to touch sales mark a million units by 2013 from all the 3 models.

Micra has brought good fortune for the company and Nissan has reacted well. Nissan added another shift at its Chennai plant as the exports of the Micra will begin soon. Buoyed by this success, Akihisa Suzuki, Global Chief Marketing Manager of Nissan Motors said, “We want to reach one million units by 2013, for the three models based on the new platform V.”

Nissan Micra sports a new styling concept and with all the features that it has packed along, the car sure seems to be a good buy. Features like keyless entry, start stop button which is available on Micra, are generally available on D segment sedans like the Chevrolet Cruze. And if you thought we were bragging about the top end variant, the basic model of the Micra is loaded with useful features too, but Indian consumers have shown an inclination towards the top-end model that comes with the aforementioned features.

Nissan Micra has also received the ‘Most Environmental friendly Car of the Year’ award in Thailand. This combination of value, features, and responsibility makes it one car too hot to resist.

Chevrolet to Launch the New Aveo Hatchback

New-Chevrolet-Aveo
The upcoming Paris Motor Show would become a battleground as car manufacturers get ready with their latest offerings. While Volvo will be showcasing two new engines offered in the all-new Volvo S60 saloon and V60, General Motors is ready with its Chevrolet Cruze hatchback, and the new production ready Aveo hatchback.

Yes, you read it right. Earlier during the Detroit Motor Show in January, we saw the concept version of the Aveo, and now the car maker is ready with the production version of the car, and we can feast our eyes during the upcoming show. And the good news is that much of the features and design elements from the concept version have been carried over into production version.

Much like the Chevrolet Cruze hatchback, the Aveo looks phenomenal too. At the front, the Aveo gets twin headlamps and Chevrolet’s new signature split front grille, the ones that we have earlier seen in the Beat and the Cruze sedan. The fog lamps that we saw in the concept Aveo is not carried over. Some of the features that have been carried over from the show car include the rear handles being hidden in the C-pillars like the Beat and the rising shoulder line, along with a sharply creased bonnet.

The new Aveo is wider and longer than the car it is replacing. The company has not released any interior pictures of the production car, but it is rumoured to include a Beat-like motorcycle-inspired instrument cluster, a wrap-around fascia and blue backlighting for the centre console. And just to take the competition a bit higher, USB and Bluetooth connectivity are standard in this car.

Chevrolet says that the Aveo’s chassis has been tuned specifically for European customers, while also claiming that the car will be comfortable as well as responsive. The hatchback will be available in two petrol and a diesel engine options. While Petrol engines include an 85bhp 1.2 and a 99bhp 1.4, there would be 1.3 diesel unit featuring the stop-start function. Chevrolet will bring in a six-speed automatic transmission as an option on the 1.4 petrol engine, manual options include five- or six-speed depending on the engine choices. The new Aveo comes equipped with Electronic Power Steering and ABS brakes as standard along with Electronic Stability Control.

General Motors has not given a hint as to when the car could possibly be launched in India, but it is expected to arrive here somewhere in mid 2011. And when it does, it will compete with the likes of Volkswagen Polo, Honda Jazz and i20 amongst others.

The company will reveal the final price and detailed technical specifications of the new Aveo at the Paris Auto Show that starts on October 02, 2010.

And the National Safety Award Goes to…

Genaral Motor_IndiaCan it be the Tata Nano? The car has passed all the tormenting safety tests more than once, but we all know that the recent fire incident has put it back in the hot seat. The matter is still under investigation. This award, however, is not for the safest car; it’s for the safest plant. Guess who won the award! It was GM India last year, and if you’re thinking of GM winning it once again, you are absolutely right.

Thanks to GM’s Halol plant, General Motors India has won itself the esteemed National Safety Award in the Motor Vehicles category for the second year in a row. The plant has received the recognition it deserves for its best safety systems pertaining to two critical areas. The Halol plant has been considered safest in the industry under the categories of Lowest Average Frequency Rate and Highest Man-Hours for Accident Free Year.

Directorate General of the Factory Advice Service & Labour Institute (DGFASLI), the country’s premier institution for safety, with the support of Ministry of Labour & Employment, Government of India, bestows this award. It was GM India’s turn for the second time in a row.

Commenting on this, Mr P Balendran, Vice-President, General Motors India said, “The award demonstrates General Motors’ commitment to safety and security measures at its plants. We have maintained a continued focus on encouraging accident prevention and implementing safety procedures across all our processes and management.

This award is very significant, as it comes against stiff competition from automobile manufacturers in India. Winning this award for the second year in a row reiterates our commitment to the high safety and security standards and we will continue raising the bar for safety in all our operations.”

Back in 1965, the Government of India had introduced the National Safety Awards in order to recognize, reward and motivate phenomenal safety performance on the part of industrial establishments. The second motive was to support accident prevention and safety promotion programmes.

This year, there was stiff competition. However, it was GM India that managed to grab the award endorsed by Directorate of Industrial Safety & Health for the automobiles category. This award seems to be adding a feather in the auto maker’s cap. It’s celebration time for GM India which is celebrating seven years of a successful journey in the Indian car industry. GM’s Talegaon plant in Maharashtra is celebrating its two-year presence.

The Talegaon plant has a capacity of 145,000 while the Halol plant has a net installed capacity of 85,000 units in 3 shifts. Earlier, GM was operating in a single shift at the Halol plant. It then started a second shift and plans to have a third one. GM India president and managing director Karl Slym calls the Halol plant flexible and feels it is capable of manufacturing all the models of GM India. GM currently sells the Aveo, Aveo U-VA, Beat, Captiva, Cruze, Optra Magnum, Optra SRV, Spark and Tavera under the Chevrolet brand in India.

Of the company’s last year’s production, less than 40,000 units were produced at Talegaon and the rest at Halol. A total of around 70,000 units were sold. Talegaon currently produces only Spark.
