Introducing Aston Martin Lagonda in India

When luxuriousness comes with on-road authority and when grace of the flowing sheet metal beautifies a wagon with unique design attributes which stand as a crown to the model, you know that it must be an Aston Martin. These magnificently chiseled automobiles made their debut in India back in 2011. Known as the Aston Martin Lagonda, this British car manufacturing company has a long history of producing some classy sports cars. But where do Aston Martin cars stand in Indian market? What are the strengths of the Aston Martins over other cars?

Aston Martin in IndiaAmalgamation of Power and Luxury:

All Aston Martin cars carry hefty V engines which generate huge amount of power. The V8 Vantage has the smallest engine in Aston Martin’s India portfolio which delivers an eye-popping 420 bhp of power. The beautiful beast One-77 with its pointed nose and the large haunches carries a 7.3L V12 which gives out a stupendous power of 750 bhp. The car can cross the 320 km/h mark on the speedometer and can do to 100 km/h in mere 3-4 seconds.

Aston Martin V8 VantageSo much to boast about the power and speed, but all these models of Aston Martin actually looks much beautiful to its aggressive character displayed on road. The wide, long and contoured nose, the sloping down roof-line, the large alloy wheels and some classic design uplifts using LEDs and chrome are simple words to put together an Aston Martin. But the way these qualities are mould to make one stunning car is what carves a special place for the British marque in the automobile world. And coming to the cabin, well it is much more adorable than you could expect. Apart from being exceptionally comfortable, everything from the dashboard to the buttons and switches stand a class apart compared to other high-end cars from big brands. This amazing amalgamation of power, richness and charm is what keeps the Aston Martin cars apart from other luxury cars of India.

Best Bond Cars To Hit The Screens

Ever wondered what makes James Bond, Britain’s topmost sleuth, the envy of men and the ultimate desire of all women? Well, agreed, this slick spy got has got insanely high levels of charm, savvy gadgets, sharp suits, snarky one-liners, a debonair demeanor, high-life and a license to kill and thrill. But it’s his impeccable taste in cars that makes him what he is — the much adored 007. Faster, sleeker and sexier — it surely takes more than just power to make a quintessential Bond car. Listed below are some of his favorite hot wheels that will ignite your boyhood automobile fantasies.

1964 Aston Martin DB5 – Goldfinger, GoldenEye, Thunderball, Tomorrow Never Dies and Casino Royale

Aston Martin DB5
Bond’s fixation with Aston Martin is legendary. The 1964 Aston Martin DB5 has starred in as many as five Bond movies till date and has more screen time to its credit than the sultriest looking Bond girl. From machine guns to champagne cooler to ejector seat, the custom-made 1964 Aston Martin DB5, especially fashioned for Sean Connery in ‘Goldfinger’, is enough to make you drop your jaws in wonder.

1976 Lotus Esprit Series I – The Spy Who Loved Me, For Your Eyes Only
The classic white Series I Lotus Esprit is yet another awe-inspiring Bond car that has inspired iconic cars like Lamborghini Countach and Lancia Stratos.  From generating fins to getting transformed into a submarine, the car accomplished several inconceivable feats.

1997 750iL – Tomorrow Never Dies
The luxurious 750iL was a far cry from the sportier hot wheels that Bond’s so accustomed to. It was equipped with hands-free option – remote control capability using a mobile phone. Plus, it boasted of re-inflating tires and rockets, meant for that easy getaway.

2006 Aston Martin DBS – Casino Royale, Quantum of Solace

Aston Martin
One of the most stunning looking and “lifesaving” Bond cars ever to hit the screens, the Aston Martin DBS, with its understated elegance, is a car worth dying for. One surprising thing about it was that it came with no frill and fancies. It had no special gadgets but secret compartments instead that held his deadly Walther P99, and an emergency med kit.

Ferrari appoints Shreyans Motors as Indian distributor

ferrari-logo
Well, its pretty official now. Ferrariis all set to roll in and it has zeroed in on Shreyans Motors, as the official distributors of Ferrari cars in India. Shreyans Motors, the distributors for Porsche in India have gained distributorship rights for India for Ferrari, ending months of speculation.

Though Shreyans was appointed as the official distributors for Ferrari cars way back in November 2010, they have started to take in bookings for the famed Italian stallion car brand for the past three months. It is said that Shreyans Motors will open its first Ferrari showroom in Delhi in the early days of April 2011 followed by a Mumbai showroom.

By then, another super and luxury car manufacturer, Aston Martin too would have completed the process of formally launching its brand in India with both its dealerships opening in New Delhi and Mumbai. Just recently, we had carried a blog on InterGlobe, owners of Indigo Airlines acquiring the rights to distribute the Swedish super car brand Koenigsegg in India.

Shreyans, who apart from Porsche also have a couple of other luxury and fashion brands as part of its portfolio is taking in orders for the 458 Italia, the 599 GTB as well as FF models. Since, as mentioned earlier in the blog, the Shreyans have already begun taking bookings for the car, expect these gleaming beauties to be delivered to its customers before the formal launch in April.

These Italian supercars sure would be pricey and as the rumours goes by, the 458 Italia should make the wallet lighter by Rs 2.8 – 3 crore, while the 599 could be sold for Rs 3.3-3.5 crore. India, at present has over 50 Ferrari cars, with a large number of them being the V8 powered last generation 430, a couple of 360s and a few 355s and 348s and so far only one 458 Italia. There are also a few 599s in the country, but no known existence of either the 456 or 612 Scaglietti tourers. While most of the Ferrari owners are spread across cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore and Chennai, they all depend on specialists currently to maintain their cars.

With super car brands such as Ferrari, Aston Martin, Koenigsegg gearing up for the Indian assault, the competition and the Indian car market grows hotter by the day.

IndiGo promotors to bring Koenigsegg Agera into India

koenigsegg-agera-xl-1
Gone are those days when we used drool looking at super cars and lament the non-availability of these cars here in India. However, everything is changing. Ever since Luxury car brands such as Rolls Royce, Bentley, Lamborghini, Maybach , Porsche and recently Bugatti set shop in India, most of the other global luxury brands such as Aston Martin, Ferrari, Maserati have already made elaborate plans to get a slice of the big unexploited ultra luxury car market which seems to a virgin territory at the moment.

Now, a new Luxury sports car maker also wants to make it big in India. And it’s none other than the Swedish super sports car maker Koenigsegg Automotive AB. Yes, you just read that right, Now that we have seen Bugatti coming up with their Rs 16 crore super car, the Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport , Koenigsegg does not want to left around. Koenigsegg has joined hands with Rahul Bhatia-promoted InterGlobe Enterprises to launch a range of high-end, high-performance models in India. Yes, these guys are the promoters of the low-cost carrier IndiGo under the InterGlobe Aviation banner.

Koenigsegg, known for its big engines, unfamiliar designs and styling under its own brand, will launch the Agera, which carries a sticker price of Rs 9.6-10 crore, next month in Hyderabad. How cool is that? The Agera which means “to act” in Swedish, sports a 4.7-litre aluminium V8 engine capable of producing peak power of 850 bhp, is one of the fastest production cars in the world. And now if you might be thinking what that much power transalates into, think of combined power of 18 Maruti Alto cars (800 cc). That’s the rough estimate of the power that the Agera produces.

2010-Koenigsegg-Agera-Rear-Angle-View-800x600

Speaking more about the numbers associated with the Koenigsegg Agera, the super car that has a top speed of 390 kmph plus can reach 100 kmph in 3.1 seconds. The car was unveiled for the first time at the Geneva Motor Show last year. The company plans to build just 16-29 units a year adding an exclusive image to the Agera.

As per the industry sources, the ultra luxury car segment is growing by a minimum of 25 per cent a year. Better economic growth, fuelled by substantial investments made by a number of multinational companies over the past few years, has contributed to a considerable rise in the sale of high-end cars in the country. Most luxury carmakers believe that India’s demand for exotic vehicles will be much higher than in traditional rivals such as China in the coming years. According to a senior executive at Rolls Royce, India could become its largest market in Asia if the growth momentum is maintained.

Dutch supercar maker Spyker cars to make India debut next year

spyker-c8-spyder-t-logo
India has become a preferred haven for the super cars. We have seen legendary Car-makers queuing up to bring their iconic super cars to India to feed on that small but niche market that’s opening up in recent days.

A couple of years ago, Super cars and India never went hand in hand. But the situation is fast changing as a host of super car makers like that of Mercedes Benz with their SLS-AMG, Lamborghini with Murcielago LP 670-4 SV and American Super car maker Ultimate Motors with its Shelby, Zenvo and Arash made it to India with its products.

And with the arrival of the Rs 16 crore Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport last month and 3 confirmed bookings later, those car makers who still thought India to be a land of snake charmers had to re-look their strategy for India. India has become a preferred destination for almost all the car manufacturers who have a super car in their portfolio.

There are more car-makers such as the fabled Aston Martin and Ferrari trying to make a cut in the Indian market. Latest in the list of inbound super cars is Netherlands based Spyker. Yes, the very Spyker F1 team which Dr. Mallya brought a couple of years back and named it Force India. This Dutch car-maker has already shortlisted potential partners to import its vehicles and two dealerships are expected to come in New Delhi and Mumbai. The company plans to launch the Spyker product in India in 2011 as soon all the arrangements are finalized.

2009-Spyker-C8-Aileron-car-picture

Spyker though has not shared the possible price tags of the models, we can just imagine how much these hand crafted body panels and hand built cars could cost. No? If we take the C8 Spyder Aileron, this car is priced at 2,20,000 pounds in London which roughly translates into Rs 1.6 crores here but we have deliberately excluded the duty it would attract here in India. Other models in Spyker’s portfolio include LM85, C12 Zagato and D8 Peking-to-Paris.

Ferrari in Fast Forward Mode to India: Coming in January 2011

Magic India Discovery
It is not the first of April, and neither is Ferrari President and Chairman, Mr Luca Cordero di Montezemolo any compulsive liar. So when he said that the Italian company would start its business in India by January 2011, rest assured that there are no jokes involved. The announcement was made during the ongoing Paris Motor Show.

Mr Montezemolo said, “Despite the crisis, we’ll close the year better than last year, close to record levels in terms of economic results. We’ll open in India in January 2011.” Currently the Italian super car manufacturer caters to 57 countries worldwide and India will soon become its 58th in January 2011.

He also added that the company was doing exceptionally well in China. Ferrari’s China sales jumped 20 percent in the first half. Ferrari, the maker of the $228,000 California supercar, with a little assistance from rising demand in the emerging markets, will increase profit by more than 10 percent this year.

“We will close the year better than last year, with double-digit growth rate in earnings”, Montezemolo said.

Earlier Ferrari had said that it would open exclusive dealerships in India this year itself, but somehow things got a little delayed. Ferrari has already indicated that, when it enter the great Indian car market, it will involve Tata in some way, owing to the relationship the Italian carmaker shares with both Tata Motors and Fiat (which holds 85% stake in Ferrari) in India. So it is kind of obvious that Ferrari would likely tie up with Tata Motors or a sub-division of the Tata Group to distribute its cars in the country.

The first Ferrari dealerships are likely to open in Delhi or Mumbai, owing to the super high demand for luxury cars in these cities. And guess what, the first cars to hit the may be the California and 458 models. However, the cars will attract a 110% import duty; hence expect the price to be no less than Rs. 2 crore.

Apart from Ferrari, there are a lot of other sports car makers that are gearing up for their Indian innings. These include Bugatti and Aston Martin, which is readying up two showrooms in Delhi and Mumbai. The booming Indian economy and an increasingly rich population are finally getting the attention of the luxury car companies to set up shop here.

According to experts, the Indian and Chinese automobile markets will provide ample scope for premium carmakers to expand their business. In China, Ferrari has already tasted success, with a sales growth of 20% in the first quarter. We are sure that the Indian crowd won’t disappoint the sports car makers.

Aston Martin Cars to Hit Indian Roads

2009-Aston-Martin-V8-Vantage
Well, one of the most famous movie heroes who gets to have it all is James Bond. Be it the latest gadgets, the best vacations, the most exotic women, and not to mention the slickest of speed machines, Bond lays his hands on them all. And when we are talking about Bond, a detailed mention of the very British Aston Martin becomes totally irresistible.

Aston Martin was one of the many cars that repeatedly made its appearance through many of the James Bond flicks. And now, the iconic car is all set to arrive in India this year. The Richie Richs of India, who have so far been treated with Lamborghinis and Rolls Royce, would definitely change their loyalties for the A. Martin priced at around Rs 3 crore.

The British car manufacturer is supposedly all geared up to launch its vehicles in India, and has tied up with Infinity Cars to open its first showroom in Mumbai. Sources close to the development have revealed that Aston Martin has already signed an agreement with the Mumbai-based Infinity Cars, which is also a dealer of luxurious BMW cars. Infinity Cars has been appointed as the company’s exclusive distributor for the Indian market.

Infinity will open the booking process for Aston Martin from next week. The cars are likely to be delivered in the next 5-6 months,” a source said. Initially, Aston Martin will launch four models, V8 Vantage, DB9, Rapide and DBS, in the Indian market, and even the ex-showroom prices have been finalised, the source added.

2010-Aston-Martin-Rapide

“While V8 and DB9 will come for Rs 1.35 crore and Rs 1.9 crore, Rapide and DBS will be offered for Rs 2.3 crore and Rs 2.8 crore. Above this, customers have to pay for the insurance and registration charges,” sources said.

Aston Martin was established in 1914 by Lionel Martin and Robert Bamford. The sports car manufacturer was a part of the US car giant Ford from 1994 to 2007.

In 2007, a joint venture company, headed by David Richards and co-owned by Investment Dar and Adeem Investment of Kuwait and English businessman John Sinders, acquired Aston Martin from Ford for 479 million pounds.

An Aston Martin spokesperson, when asked about its India plans, said: “Aston Martin is currently in discussion with potential dealers in India.” Infinity Cars director Lalit Choudary said: “It is not the right time and pre-mature as we are still finalising the prices and what models to bring in… The picture will be clear in a month’s time”.

Most of the big players in the luxury sports car market, including Lamborghini, Rolls Royce, have all tasted success in the Indian market. So, it is quite sensible of Aston Martin to finally set foot in the Indian market.

Geely Buys Volvo. Too Much, Too Soon?

logo-geely-dalam
And finally, the deal is finalised. In March Geely agreed to buy Volvo from Ford Motors, and after a little haggling with European Commission, Europe’s top antitrust watchdog, Volvo finally belongs to Geely. In a deal worth $1.5 billion, Geely Holding Group has successfully completed the acquisition of the Swedish brand, Volvo. This is not only an unusually big deal for a private Chinese company, but also the biggest foreign auto acquisition for China.

But big challenges lie ahead for the ambitious Chinese car maker. Volvo is a global brand, whereas Geely hardly enjoys any kind of recognition in the international market. Industry analysts are already predicting a gloomy future for Geely, saying that integrating the corporate culture of two companies, which are poles apart, would be a tough task for the Chinese company.

Geely has announced that it paid $1.3 billion in cash plus a $200 million note — less than the $1.8 billion price that was initially announced in March due to changes in pension obligations and working capital.

“This famous Swedish premium brand will remain true to its core values of safety, quality, environmental care and modern Scandinavian design,” said Geely founder and chairman Li Shufu in a statement.

Beijing has been egging on Chinese companies to expand internationally, taking advantage of the global crises to acquire assets at much lower prices. Till date, the biggest acquisitions have been by government companies in the energy and mining industries.

Zhang Xin, industry analyst for Guotai Junan Securities in Beijing, says that Geely would face a long struggle in reviving the loss-making Volvo. “Why would a company suddenly make money by simply replacing a boss?” Zhang said. “I don’t hold high expectations for Geely. They still have a long way to go.” Li also mentioned that, under the Chinese ownership, Volvo will gain a new foothold in the U.S. and European markets and expand in China and other emerging markets.

Geely is expected to cough up a grand sum, up to $900 million, if it wants to return Volvo to profitability. Volvo’s has been facing a lot of problems mainly due to high research and development costs, while producing very few vehicles compared to competitors like Daimler AG and BMW AG.

Geely has revealed that Volvo will keep its headquarters and manufacturing presence in Sweden and Belgium and its board will have autonomy to execute its strategic plans.

Volvo Logo

The privately owned Geely has built a business in the Chinese market by selling cars, motorcycles and scooters with little government support. The deal would catapult Geely in the main league of big players in China, which is the world’s biggest auto market.

Ford bit more than it could swallow when it acquired Volvo in 1999 for $6.45 billion. And since then, it has been looking to unload the extra baggage to raise cash and focus on its two remaining core brands.

In similar circumstances, Ford sold its Jaguar and Land Rover brands to India’s Tata Motors Ltd. in June 2008 for $1.7 billion, and it sold Aston Martin to a private equity group in 2007 for $931 million. Ford also plans to stop producing its Mercury brand by the end of this year.

Bookings Open for the Aston Martin V8 Vantage N420?

Aston Martin Vantage V8 N420
#420 will be replacing #400. Do you hear that? We are here referring to the Aston Martin N400 and N420. Yes, the Aston Martin V8 Vantage N420 has been launched. It is a new motorsport-inspired hardcore special edition of its V8 Vantage. Interested in knowing more? Read on.

It’s nothing like the 2007 Aston Martin model, the N400 aged too fast and that’s why the N420 has been introduced. The new Aston Martin V8 Vantage owes its existence to the Nurburging 24 Hours as it the car has been sculpted to commemorate the Aston Martin’s achievements in the race. The Vantage N420 carries a 4.7-litre V8 motor that pumps out 420 bhp. That seems to be quite the same as the earlier model. However, the difference between the two is that the new model is 27 kg lighter than the outgoing N400. One can also notice plenty of changes in the car’s exterior styling. The interiors of the car have been upgraged, while the suspension and exhaust system has had the magic touch too.

On the outside, the new Aston Martin V8 Vantage N420 flaunts a carbonfibre front splitter, side strakes and diffuser. The all-new 10-spoke gloss black alloy wheels dazzle while the car is in motion and is a real treat to the eyes. The finishing touch to the exteriors is given by the black mesh vents and a Graphitic finish to the tailpipes.

Aston-Martin-Vantage-N420-and-N24-picture

The interiors of the V8 Vantage N420 get touches of Iridium everywhere. This ‘Iridium’ package encompasses plenty of graphite instruments. The steering wheel gets a leather or Alcantara finish. The seats, made of carbonfibre, are light and extremely comfortable. They feature the ‘Race Track’ stitching that was made popular by the V12 Vantage.

Advanced features like Bluetooth connectivity, cruise control and Park Distance control come as standard in this luxurious machine. The N420 is also fitted with the Sports Pack as standard. It usually comes optional. This Sports Pack includes revised spring, dampers and anti-roll bars. A new sports exhaust system with a louder exhaust note also comes standard.

Aston Martin celebrates its racing heritage with this car in the true sense. The celebration is colourful with new colours working their magic on the masterpiece. The new car’s colours include Rose Yellow, Kermit Green and Elwood Blue aprt from the existing colour shades. The new car is available in both roadster and coupe versions and will cost from £96,995. Those interested in having their hands on this one needn’t wait too long. We hear that bookings open later this month. The first deliveries, however, are scheduled for the end of next month.

The Garia Luxury Golf Car Explored

garia_lsv_golf_cart
Every other day, we have at least a few lines written about green cars. This green mantra is growing in significance every day with the increase in pollution levels in the surroundings. Today too, we will still continue with the green talk, but with a little difference. Golf cars seem to have grabbed our attention of the day. Don’t you think golf cars can become the new standard for convenient and green transportation?

The smaller electric vehicles seem to be superb means of transportation, at least for the short trips. And, with an estimated market share of over 70 per cent by 2012 these cars will prove a point. They’ll make sure they are here to stay. These little electrical monsters more popular as NEVs (neighbourhood electric vehicles) or LSVs (low speed vehicles) are here to stay.

The latest LSV most discussed about is The Garia Luxury Golf Car. Ever heard of it? This car is manufactured at the same factory that builds the Porsche Boxster and Cayman. The luxury golf car boasts of a host of impressive features. Who wouldn’t when so much is packed in such little space? The Garia seems to carry some of the best features from some of the best cars.

Built to the highest standards of the automotive industry, The Garia features a Formula 1 inspired front suspension, a drive train built by an Italian company that also produces Ducati gearboxes, and aluminium profiles made by the same company that supplies aluminium profiles to Aston Martin, Jaguar and Volvo. We told you, this is an all-in-one exotic machine!

Perhaps a month or so and we will see the new luxury golf car. The Garia LSV is safe enough. Strapped inside is street legal safety equipment like seatbelts and side mirrors. It is also equipped with a hydraulic brake system. The Garia is small and cute. Don’t you think this can be the ideal vehicle for city transport? And, with tax-based incentives in many countries and an increasing number of states and countries that allow LSVs to be operated on roads with speed limits of 50km/h or less, don’t you think these can be a part of future transportation. Oh wait! LSVs no longer belong to the future market, they are the market.

garia

“The Garia LSV is ideal for shorter trips and recreational purposes and it is possible to drive directly from your home to, for example, the golf course. This is something many people will appreciate, and it makes The Garia LSV a unique product” says Anders Lynge, Creative Director of Garia A/S and designer of The Garia. Oh yes, the rich can flaunt their greenliness too while letting everyone know that they are going to the golf course for some recreation.

It’s is worthy to be mentioned that vehicles traditionally designed for recreational purposes are increasingly being used for non-recreational purposes. This is a very good sign though. There just a very narrow line between a golf car and an NEV/LSV. Research predicts that the number of privately owned vehicles (mainly golf cars or modified golf cars) in the U.S. will increase from 98,000 in 2006 to 118,000 units by 2012. So, we can expect India to at least begin taking the green route.
