Already India is host to luxury car brands like BMW, Audi, Volvo and others, who have a market worth few thousands. Many luxury car manufacturers are moving their bases to cheaper markets to cut down costs, which will eventually lower the cost of their cars to suit local conditions. Luxury cars are witnessing an unprecedented growth in these countries. These markets may become more important than their existing markets. It is not the rich countries like US, France, Germany and UK which will be the driving forces for luxury cars anymore. The demand is getting flat in several European countries. According to a report in Daimler, manufacturer of Mercedes-Benz, the markets of India, China and Russia will be driving the auto market in 2008. The trend may also extend in the next decade. Mini, BMW’s luxury small car was scheduled to launch in 2009. The BMW venture in small luxury cars segment is now delayed due to certain reasons and rescheduled for 2010. BMW cars are successfully rolling in Indian roads. But the company feels 2009 is not the right time to launch the Mini. May be the company has thought of some other strategy for its introduction in Indian market. But this is a good news for the German car manufacturer, Volkswagen who is planning to launch the Beetle this year. The Beetle will cost Rs15 lakh to Rs 20 lakh almost same as BMW Mini which will cost Rs 20 lakh. Being uncertain about the Mini’s success in India, the company has announced to sell the car only in Mumbai and Delhi. Labels: BMW-Cars, luxury cars

Everyone knows that luxury cars, apart from being luxurious, come with large and powerful engines that give low mileage. Luxury car manufacturers take pride in their powerful gas guzzlers and talk loudly about their cars’ power and performance. Mercedes-Benz wants to shift from that notion. It is soon to unveil the first hybrid car to use lithium ion batteries as a power source. They are calling the car ‘S400 Blue Hybrid’. It will come with a 3.5-litre V6 petrol engine that will be accompanied by a 15 KW electric motor. No more re-fuelling your luxury car. It’s expected to come some time is 2009. Most cars in the Indian car market today are front wheel drive. The reason for this is that the front wheel setup is simpler and cheaper to build compared to the rear wheel drive. The construction of rear wheel drive is slightly more complex. Also, front wheel drive cars are more popular in India because they are lighter (meaning that they give more mileage) and they perform well in slippery surfaces (meaning that they are better suited for Indian roads and for the rainy season). All these factors have killed the rear wheel drive cars in India which actually give better acceleration, better braking, and a better feel of driving. Rear wheel cars are more zippy and fun to drive. Comparatively Front wheel drive is slightly boring. The rear wheel drive concept is now limited only to a few MUVs, commercial vehicles and expensive luxury cars like Mercedes-Benz, BMW and Audi.
