This year’s Geneva International Motor Show at Geneva Palexpo marks the beginning of spring in Europe with a host of innovations and new car models scintillating the pavilion. The auto show was started in 1905 and since then it’s held every year during March in Geneva. The first and significant auto show of Europea will display about 120 new car models this year that are speculated to make their debut in the global market in a couple of years. The most striking part of this year edition is the green theme that will display a host of ecological and economical models. Infact most of the car manufacturers are set to introduce their unique green concepts to woo reluctant car buyers. It’s amazing to know that it’s the first time in the history of Geneva Motor Show that the show has turned one of its seven exhibition hall just to showcase the eco-friendly cars. Fiat, Renault, and Volkswagen are placing smaller and more economical petrol and diesel engines under the bonnet of their striking car models. General Motors that is presently undergoing a tough crisis is also set to display the electric version of the Ampera sedan. And a new car manufacturer Tesla will unveil an all-electric sports car that can run from 0 – 100 km/h in 4 seconds. Even Bentley has entered green revolution with 461kW and 12 cylinders engineered car driven by both biofuel and petrol. With this exhilarating show round the corner, all car manufacturers are expecting a reverse gear in plunging sales, lay-offs, and plant closures. With the growing demand of green cars, most car manufacturers are trying to trim their engine displacement and bringing in eco-friendly variants. Luxury car manufacturer rarely go for technology change. They assume that changing from petrol to fuel efficient technology will result in loss of power. They are afraid of loosing the tag of powerful engine car.
But that myth seems to have been broken by luxury car maker leader Mercedes. Mercedes-Benz has come up with two new CNG sedans in India. The variant will more fuel efficient than the Maruti Suzuki 800 which runs on petrol.
All luxury car manufacturers should go for this as more car buyers are opting for fuel efficient cars. The alternative fuel will change the image of Luxury cars for forever. Labels: CNG cars, eco-friendly cars, luxury cars, Maruti Suzuki, Mercedes-Benz

Hyundai has always stood for innovative technologies and customer friendly policies. It has been in the forefront of several customer friendly campaigns, while releasing cars with better fuel efficiency. It has now gone a step ahead and tried to integrate alternative fuel technology in its passenger cars following other car manufacturer like Maruti, Tata and Ford. The company will be launching LPG variants of Santro and Accent in August this year. It is also likely to launch a green variant of the award winning i10 car. With the success of green model i30 in Australia, the company is now planning to introduce similar cars in India. It will be available with alternative fuel variant next year. The cars would meet the Euro V emission standards. The company has made huge investment in development of eco-friendly cars. The LPG variants may just be the first step in this direction. Though this concept is also slowing catching up in India, according to statistics from the International Association for Natural Gas Vehicles, India is the 5th largest producer of green vehicles in the world. With the use of these types of cars, air pollution could be minimised. These cars also decreases the running cost of the vehicle. Labels: eco-friendly cars, Hybrid eco-friendly cars, LPG cars

After asking the 15-year old cars to undergo a thorough health check–up and asking those who fail the test to retire, The Delhi government has now gone soft on battery operated vehicles. In India the only commercial battery operated car is Bangalore based Reva Maini’s electric cars. The car cost Rs 3.5 lakh in the rest of the country, but will cost merely Rs 2.5 lakh. As much as Rs 1 lakh will be reduced in the total take home price. The state government is giving subsidies of 30 percent. This will really help Delhi to become one of the cleanest cities and also a good news for buyers who want to buy these cars. The thick emission fog will give way for sunlight and birds may chirp on trees. The cost of this bright future will be Rs 35 crore per year for the government. And now don’t think that God’s divine message was received by all the government officials. The proposal was placed in front of Delhi government, by the environment ministry, ahead of the 2010 Commonwealth games. Delhi government is waiving of VAT, road and registration charges to make battery operated cars more attractive than its petrol and diesel run cousins. Well with this price reduction on green cars, people will opt for electric cars rather than going for diesel or petrol small cars. Labels: eco-friendly cars, Electric Cars

Honda has always been known to be an environment-friendly car manufacturer. With a whole range of hybrids and eco-cars, it is a model car maker. While the Indian government is thinking of making 10 percent ethanol (E10) blends with petrol mandatory to hold in every petrol bunk in India by October, Honda has announced it will come out with its E20 cars by December 2008 if this is the case. The Honda manufacturer stands as a favourite for many in India. Many car manufacturers are struggling to bring in hybrids and many luxury car owners want to stick to petrol guzzling engines, but a little help and nudge from the Indian government will go a long way in the acceptance of Hybrid machines on Indian roads. The Prime Minister of India recently told the planning commission to work on a policy that helps cutting fuel emissions in our country. Global warming has already knocked us a blow in the face of a Tsunami. The melting glaciers in the Himalayan mountain range and rising temperatures are also serious matters of concern. Putting together all these issues, the Indian government seems to be working on a policy to build better transport systems in bigger cities, but the questions I am dying to ask the honourable PM is: Why make a policy without enough infrastructure to support such a plan? Where are the LPG or CNG gas stations in India except one or two cities? Why is the government making it difficult for eco-friendly cars to come to India?
Imported cars are flooding to India and growing as fast as the Indian population. Such policies fall flat without government support to back it up.
