It was an auto expo of a different kind in New Delhi recently. It was the 1st carnival of vintage cars, bikes, memorabilia, and auto accessories. Hordes of vintage car lovers rushed to the event called ‘Autojumble’.

Exotic vintage cars belonging to erstwhile rajas and maharajas of Awadh, Gwalior, Jaipur, Udaipur and various other places were on exhibit. There was a fine display of automotive fine arts, sports and games for children. There was even a funny competition called “guess the component” where both children and adults participated with great enthusiasm. A group played live music using auto parts as instruments.

It seems like the bugs came swarming into the streets of Bangalore on January 20, 2008. The sight was a beauty to behold. The Volkswagen Beetle car rally was the main attraction. The ‘Herbie’ car rally was the first of its kind in the country.

Fifteen vintage Beetle cars went across the busy roads of the city like a royal procession decked up in bright, newly painted colors carrying the Volkswagen flag on their front. Beetle reminds me of a lost world charm. I was overjoyed on seeing the rally in Bangalore. It came as a surprise when 15 cars rolled beside my 800 on MG road. They looked more majestic and elegant than any other small car I have set my eyes on.

I hope this car rally has inspired many more car lovers to participate in such vintage car rallies.

It’s was a time when people looked-back and rejoined the old glory at an Auto Expo where new wheel machines were making a huge entry into the Indian car market. The Heritage Motoring Club of India (HMCI) displayed the largest collection of vintage and classic cars at the Auto Expo this Tuesday in New Delhi. They called it the “The Auto Expo Classic Parade”.

HMCI drove down at least 100 vintage and classic cars and over 59 such motorbikes on the 1st day of the Expo. The Union Youth Affairs and Sports Minister flagged-off the display.

Passion for cars has been carried over from the days of the Maharajas. Unlike today, there were no traffic jams in their time and size of the car was never an issue. There was unbounded freedom to modify cars.

In 1912, the Maharaja of Nabha in Punjab owned a Rolls Royce which he had transformed to look like a swan. The metal bird looked amazing with a Gabriel horn that had eight organ pipes and a keyboard. It also had two levers - one opened the beak of the swan and the other sent hot water from the radiator into the swan’s nostril to make a hissing sound. Such passion for creativity with cars is very rare these days.

The unique idea was not only a huge success in India but also shined in England. Though this crowd puller was eventually banned from the streets as it caused traffic snarls, it still remains in the hearts of car lovers.

We as an ancient civilization have a very rich history. But I never knew about Indian carhistory. Being a car-manufacturing hub and a large market in Asia, India does have an automobile history of its own. Here first car rolled out in 1898. Yet we never had a car museum.
Now New Delhiwill be the first to have one. It will showcase 100-year of Indian automobile history. The museum will be spread in an area of 10,000 sq yard. This museum is a brainchild of a group of vintage motoring enthusiasts. The Union Government along with prominent car makers has also chipped in with its contribution. Heritage Motoring Club of India is spearheading the project. Even a few corporate houses are learned to have nodded for sponsoring the museum.
