Jaguar XJThe adage “Born from the Jets” might be the slogan of the recently saved from death Swedish Saab car company, but guess what, the above mentioned adage will be more appropriate for the British car maker Jaguar.

We have a reason for that. Jaguar has been awarded funding from the U.K government to develop a small jet turbine as a range extender for a future hybrid Jaguar luxury car.

In stating the Jaguar luxury car, we mean the newly launched 2011 Jaguar XJ full-sized luxury sedan. This car which could get an extended-range electric model in its portfolio in a couple of years might also provide a platform for the innovative jet-powered range extender.

Yes, we call this innovative as the jet-powered turbine technology though was first developed by Rover Cars which developed JET1, the first-ever jet-powered turbine car, is one of the predecessor companies of Jaguar Land Rover, now owned by India's Tata Motors. So the technology fits the Jaguar cars to the T.
Rover Cars JET 1
Rover Cars’ JET1 which is currently housed in London’s Science Museum, ran on petrol, diesel or kerosene and sped up to 88 miles per hour. This car also spawned a Le Mans racer developed with BRM Formula One that averaged more than 100 mph and topped out at 142 mph.

The cars that run on turbine technology is smaller, lighter and emits less CO2 which should be a welcome news for the green warriors. The British government awarded $1.8 million in development funds to develop the turbine-based range extender for electric vehicles to a consortium of Jaguar-Land Rover, Bladon Jets, and SR Drives. The highlights of the modern micro-turbine technology is that it saves more than 200 pounds over a petrol engine for onboard power generation to recharge an electric car’s battery pack, while slightly reducing CO2 emissions. The Bladon Jets turbine has just 5 percent of the weight and parts count of a typical four-cylinder engine.

There are a few drawbacks which come imbibed with this technology as it is not so good for direct drive. As Chrysler learned a decade later, when it released 56 prototypes of its elegant Chrysler Turbine coupe for real-world tests by roughly 200 drivers, turbine technology proved too inefficient and expensive for production-car use.

Chrysler's test cars suffered from throttle lag, lack of low-end torque, very high exhaust temperatures, and mediocre fuel economy (17 mpg) from their 97-kilowatt (130-horsepower) turbine engines, which powered the car through a standard automatic transmission.

Bladon Jets micro turbine
Turbines also aren't particularly suited to the rapid acceleration cycles of varied driving. Using a turbine as a steady-speed source to generate electric power, on the other hand, lets it operate most efficiently and at close to its maximum output.

It is understandable what would be the thought that would go through your mind when you read this blog. You would be obviously eager to know about the launch of the Suzuki Kizashi in India.

Well Suzuki has announced the U.S. pricing for its popular sedan, Kizashi sedan. The car will be available in store in the United States starting from next month. The Kizashi will have a price tag starting at Rs 9 lakh. And this is a tempting price for a car that would stand against models such as the Honda Accord and Toyota Camry.

The Suzuki Kizashi meets the NHTSA's 2014 safety standards. It will be available in various spec levels, with top-end models being priced at Rs 10.50-11.50 lakh. Standard features of the Kizashi include eight airbags, ABS, dual-zone climate control system, EPS stability control, 9-speaker audio system with steering wheel mounted controls, pushbutton keyless start, and projector beam headlamps.

The sedan will be available in both the versions of all-wheel-drive and front-wheel-drive. And the latter will have a continuously variable transmission (CVT). Kizashi will also be available in a high-performance GTS model that will have a six-speed manual or performance-tuned CVT with steering wheel paddle shifters. The optional features of the car will include leather upholstery, automatic rain sensing wipers power-adjustable seats, and automatic headlamps and rear proximity sensors.

Maruti Suzuki will display Kizashi at the Auto Expo in Delhi, which will be held in January next year. The Kizashi is expected hit Indian roads India by mid-2010. But in India, it might be 20% more expensive than it is in the U.S.

Fiat Linea

Fiat’s stylish sedan Fiat Linea has long suffered from underpowered engines since its inception here in India. Fiat Linea currently runs on a 1.3L diesel and 1.4L petrol that lacks the punch.

The owners of the car certainly feel that they haven’t got their share of power for their money with the Linea. The guys in Fiat finally have taken the complaints and grumblings quite seriously and are all set to launch a series of powerful engines by next year in the upcoming 2010 Delhi Auto Expo.

Fiat’s sedan Linea and hatchback Grande Punto is of much importance to the Fiat India’s Indian presence as these two models have given tremendous sales figures. Now Fiat India would not want to give their customers a great car with underpowered engines, which takes the josh out of motoring and dwindles the size of their coffers due to poor sales.

Fiat India therefore might as well showcase powerful 1.6L or the 1.9L diesel engines for the gracious Linea. If launched in India, the 1.9L diesel engine will come with two configurations that might be 8 valves and 16 valves. These two engines would have four different power outputs that would generate 100PS, 120PS, 130PS and 150PS.

Libya is known for large petroleum reserves, but now Libya will be famous for cars. This is not a normal car; this is a ‘rocket car’.

The legendary Libyan leader Muammar al-Gaddafi has designed a ‘rocket car’. This amazing ‘rocket car’ has been designed to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the 1969 coup that brought him to power. Muammar al-Gaddafi with his comrades led a bloodless coup against King Idris I on 1 September 1969.

The prototype of the ‘rocket car’ is called the Libyan Rocket. It is an ultra-safe car as sleek as a rocket. The sedan is 17 feet long and more than 6 feet wide. The sedan is powered by a 3-liter V-6 gasoline engine.

The Libyan Rocket is also fitted with airbags, collapsible bumpers and an unspecified ‘electronic defense system’. The sedan can travel hundreds of kilometres on a flat tire.

This feature is incorporated as a safety and emergency feature that come be useful while driving through the vast deserts of Libya. Another safety feature installed in this car is a device to cut off the fuel supply to the engine to avoid fire in case of accident.

Muammar al-Gaddafi was in discussion with Tesco TS SpA, an automotive design company based in Turin, about the Libyan Rocket’s styling and asked the Italian car design company for an original car using Libyan materials including marble, leather and fabric.
The car was unveiled earlier this week in Tripoli at the end of an African Union summit.

The construction of the production unit to manufacture this car will begin next month in Tripoli. Gaddafi selected the name 'rocket' to send a message that Libya uses such devices for peaceful ends.

New Mahindra Xylo Cars In India

A lot of criticism has been heaped on Mahindra and Mahindra for its sedan killer campaign. Many sedan owners have voiced their anger over Mahindra campaign to market the Xylo. The car owners said that they would never chuck their elegantly designed sedans for the robust and rugged appearing vehicle.

But Mahindra defended itself saying that Xylo campaign was rightly designed to highlight the merits of the vehicle. The Xylo is a multi purpose vehicle (MPV) that combines the qualities of a sedan and a utility vehicle. Xylo promises more space with seven or eight seat options and facilities for flatbeds, foldable dining trays, and parking sensors. The extended wheelbase also ensures more cargo space. A sedan will never be able to offer so many facilities.

It is also noted that Xylo is shown in an urban setting unlike other SUVs by Mahindra which highlighted their off-road capabilities. The sedan killer strategy was aimed at urban car buyers, who normally go for mid-size cars to gain more space and comfort. An MPV can add more dimensions to the space sought by the sedan buyers.

Mahindra Xylo has been able to plug four of the six aspirations (identified in a study TNS India) of a car buyer. They are status, control, security, comfort, potency, and liberation. And the Xylo advertisement is based on this report. The advertisement highlights the four important aspects of influence-space, comfort, status, and potency. Mahindra tries to reach the young and zestful consumers who want to get enough from a car rather than only a means for travel.

Renault’s Sandero now gets a green signal to enter the Indian car market in 2009.

The car was supposed to be manufactured at Renault-Nissan’s new facility situated in Greenfield, Chennai. But due to the current downturn in the car market, both Renault and Nissan are not keen to start any new venture in the new facility. There were market speculations that even the production of the Logan was to be shifted to the facility in Chennai.

But now, after experiencing a severe backdrop, Renault plans to shift both the production to Mahindra’s facility situated in Nashik. Possibilities are there that the proposed Sandero could be built by Mahindra. The joint venture now even plans to produce Logan in the Nashik’s facility.

Sandero is a five-door hatchback with the basic features adapted from its sibling the Logan. The car is spacious, fuel efficient and light on pocket which makes its perfectly fit for the Indian market.

It is known that both the Logan sedan and the Sandero hatchback share most of the car components. Under the circumstances, producing both the cars in the same facility would make logistics easy. The joint venture may earn good profits by implementing these plans.

It’s incredible to believe how a car can reveal the inner personality. But that’s true.

Just look at your car once and then peep inside your heart. You’ll find some similarities there itself. It a universal fact that whatever you say, do and choose in life directly or indirectly reflects your traits or characteristics. Because it’s the choice that matters and choice comes from the inner core of your being.

Similar is the case with cars. Whatever car you choose reveals your true personality. Every choice that you make to buy your car, the model, type, or colour of the car, can tell everything about you. Your likes, dislikes, and your traits can be revealed. There may be examples where the choice may not dictate the actual traits of your personality but then there may be some factors that may have fluctuated your choice and aspirations in terms of buying a car. There may be exceptions too.

It’s only a way to test or verify whether your car reveals the inner you or not. Choice of a sports car says that you are an adventurous person and choice of a sedan tells that you are a well-balanced person.

Do you have a red colour car? Are you an energetic person? If not, then the car does not actually match your personality. Buy black and people will think that you always fly above with supremacy and the choice of white makes you an extrovert person.

Furthermore, there are many small and minute things that tell what kind of person you are. Its all upto you, how you take it as!

Thursday, 16 October 2008

In the last 10 years there have been numerous cars rolled out by virtually every company. In addition, many of these cars have been radically carrying new designs, and in fact, what used to be at one point in time the so called 'Concept Cars' are now reality and owned by many commoners. And in the Indian context, we are now seeing global cars being launched. Thanks to Globalization. While many of you agree to the above comment, you might have also noticed off late, these designs are becoming more evolutionary than revolutionary like the snooping bonnet, front grills, headlights, etc. However, the most noticeable one is the 'A' Pillar design. You can pretty much pick any kind of vehicle, be it a Sedan, Hatchback, SUV, MUV you will notice the Quarter glass on the front door.

While, from a design perspective, this might be inevitable as the 'A' Pillar is designed to be aerodynamic, unfortunately, this necessitates for a quarter glass. Designers are trying their best to make it look appealing. Maruti Suzuki SX4 has one of the worst), but the most important part to be looked into is does this design pose safety concerns? In fact, yes, the quarter glass can significantly impede visibility to the drivers, especially at the crossroads or intersections. Designers have to serious look always of making ‘A’ Pillar aerodynamic but at the same time, get away with the quarter glass. Is anyone reading this? Can we see some revolutionary design covering this aspect?
