Electric cars have received poor response from Indians. India’s own Reva has been the most successful venture among electric cars in the world. Bangalore-based Reva Electric Car Company is seen to vroom only in a few cities in India. It was only recently that the decks were cleared for Reva cars to hit the national capital Delhi. For a country like India, this is too little. Electric cars continue to post poor sales and receive very little encouragement from the Government. But UK has already taken a liking to this car. There are over 1000 cars running only in London. The British authorities have already granted special rights to the Reva car and cut down taxes. They also provide concessions like free parking with free electricity supply for re-charging. These proactive steps from the UK government encourage fuel efficient cars like the Reva to become popular among lawyers, doctors, architects, corporate executives, and various others. One peek at India reveals that the government is spending several crores on promoting and encouraging highly polluting cars and added to this, we have no stringent norms on emission levels. Makes me wonder if there is some high level of politics going on in the Government that we as people of India are not aware of! It seems like most car manufacturers are finding it difficult to develop a workable electric car. They are trying to develop electric cars that will be more powerful and cost effective. As the car makers are struggling with the new technologies, the electric cars themselves are getting upgraded everyday. Bangalore based Maini Reva has already proved that electric cars are workable. They can be easily motorable in urban cities. Now more and more car companies are joining the race to develop electric cars as it is the cheapest option. General Motors is likely to launch the high profile electric car Volt in a year’s time. With increasing green house effect and air pollution, car manufacturers profess emission free cars may become a reality in near future. Labels: Electric Cars, Maini Reva

This time both Tata Nano and Maini REVA is going to have a tough time. Well known clock makers Ajanta group is planning to manufacture an electric car which will be cost lesser than Nano. The electric car by Ajanta Group is expected to cost Rs 85,000. They are already manufacturing electric scooters and bikes under ‘Oreva' brand. As a part of R&D for the small car project, the company has already imported eight electric cars of different brands. At present it is Maini REVA that rules the Indian roads. Sounds great! Tough competition among car manufacturer in small car segment. Looks like India will soon be seen with more eco-friendly cars. With the growing number of eco-friendly cars, buyers will have more option to choose from small car segment. Beside this, these cars will help to reduce air pollution.

The ultra-cheap car Tata Nano will be facing another rival very soon. Ajanta - the well know clock makers are planning to roll out an electric car that may cost just around Rs.85, 000. This is definitely far cheaper to the Nano. This electric car will also be challenging the Maini REVA which is the only electric car in the Indian car market. The details of the new car from Ajanta are not yet revealed. We’ll have to wait a little to learn more. Labels: Electric Car, Maini Reva, new car launch, Tata, tata nano

It is good news that the excise duty has been reduced vastly on small cars. The government should have scrapped excise duty completely on electric car. Electric cars would have received a huge push in sales, if the prices dropped. The concept of electric car has been popular in India since Maini Revai was launched. The car is also credited to be the highest selling electric car in the world. Though people are interested in pollution control by opting it, most car buyers have shunned it and going for petrol and diesel cars since it is priced heavily. The another electric and environmentally-friendly car Bavina is set to launch this year and many other companies are in different stages of developing electric cars, a little reduction of price or abolition of excise duty on electric cars would surely encourage buyers to drive home electric cars. The Maini Revai was, till now, the only electric car in India. A team of aspiring engineers at IIT Mumbai have developed a prototype for a futuristic electric car and are calling it the ‘e-on’. Compared to Revai’s top speed of 80 km/h, the prototype is far slower and can reach a maximum of just 30 km/h. Also, the new car can seat only 2 compared to Revai’s capacity of 4 passengers. On full charge, the e-on can travel upto 50 kms. Like Revai, the e-on has an electric front wheel drive configuration and will not require petrol or diesel to run. E-on is fully controlled by a joystick much like playing a computer game. A small push of the lever can accelerate the car and a small pull can decelerate it. Looks like driving is going to be child’s play soon! Labels: Electric Car, Maini Reva, Prototype

Earlier it was car manufacturers who announced an increase in price and now the government announces a hike in fuel prices at the start of the coming year. This, when the news of Tata’s new super-mileage small car was just sinking in. The reason for this increase in fuel prices is said to be a result of huge losses incurred by public sector oil firms here. Whatever the reason, it’s finally the common man who takes the brunt of it all. As usual, the price hike has been labeled a ‘moderate’ increase. What does the future hold for the auto world? Well! With fuel prices pushing upward at this rate, we’re sure the day of bullock carts and bicycles are just a few pages away in the calendar. We are glad Honda’s bringing a hybrid car to India. Seeing the tiny Maini Reva ply our roads cheers us up even more. Labels: Civic Hybrid, Maini Reva, Prices

Do you know about REVA' s cousin in London? I am talking about the new G-Wiz electric car in UK by GoingGreen is both the cheapest and the greenest car available. Now, for the first time, commuters and city drivers can not only afford to go green, but will also save a lot of money. G-WHIZ is manufactured in India (Bangalore) by Maini REVA. Launched last summer in the London, the G-WHIZ is totally emission-free, making it by far the greenest car on the road. Ideal for city commuting and frequent short trips. The G-WHIZ which has four seats (room for two adults plus two small children) is perfect for school runs, shopping, outing etc. It has the option of dual motors, DC version, capable of 40 miles per hour and with in a single charge and AC version delivers a range of up to 48 miles per charge, a top speed of 50 mph. Lately, automobile manufacturers are concentrating more on introducing eco-friendly cars. Making use of natural fuels like ethanol, compressed gas, natural gas, and bio-diesel leaves the environment free of contamination. These natural fuels can also save us from importing petroleum products. The success of eco-friendly cars in foreign countries has made prominent car manufacturers think of launching more such models in India. The environment friendly car launched by General Motors in California is known as Hy-wire and looks more like a child’s car, but performs really well. The main aspect of so called hybrid cars is retaining and preserving nature. The usage of these fuels also make the efficiency of the engine last longer, because it does not leave any residue in the carburetor, which bothers many car owners. These environment-friendly fuels enable the vehicle to run smoothly and with considerable power. India’s first eco-friendly car, Maini Reva, has long back hit the Indian roads. Though it is seen very rarely on the roads, it really saves the environment and the pocket. This is an electric passenger car, which makes use of a battery and leaves the atmosphere free of pollutants like carbon-di-oxide and smoke. This peppy car moves skillfully on city roads. However, on the flip side, its performance and speed drops considerably on roads with ditches and potholes. Reva with all its standard equipments turns out quiet expensive. It can afford to seat only two comfortably with the rear space much suited to fill shopping bags. The manufacturers seem to have concentrated more on saving the environment and not much on its reliability. The Reva leaves a lot to be desired. Seeing the growth of Reva on Indian roads, Toyota Motors is planning to launch their version of the eco-friendly car 'Prius'. Hybrid eco-friendly cars are selling like hot-cakes all over the globe and the sales statistics are expected to rise further if the Indian automobile sector can also be captured. Compared to the facilities offered, these cars are pricey. These cars use a battery to move on and, when completely charged, it can travel for 60 kilometers. However, once the car is bought, it is extremely economical. It is best suited as a second car that helps you move around within city limits. Labels: Hybrid eco-friendly cars, Maini Reva, Toyota
