Mahindra and Mahindra gladdened by the success of its Scorpio has made elaborate plans to develop a brand new SUV platform that will eventually replace its flagship SUV Scorpio. Mahindra has hit the right pedal in this step and will invest close to Rs 700 crore in this ambitious project. This SUV might be Mahindra’s attempt to go global and target the international markets such as U.S, European countries and the Middle East. Mahindra has been eying for a international product ever since the inception of its now flagship product the Mahindra Scorpio. Pawan Goenka, President, Mahindra and Mahindra was stated saying that “We are developing a new SUV platform, which will replace Scorpio. This platform will be compatible with the markets abroad and will be exported from India. We are looking at investing around Rs 600 crore-Rs 700 crore in the project.” This new SUV will be manufactured at the company’s Chakan plant in Maharashtra and will be positioned at a higher segment than the flagship Scorpio. The investment in the new SUV platform development is the part of Mahindra and Mahindra’s $ 1 billion capex plans, which includes half a billion investment on the chakan plant alone. The Chakan plant will also produce the Maxximo mini truck which was unveiled on Tuesday at the 10th Auto Expo. Mahindra Maxximo will be pitted against the Tata Ace, which is currently the market leader in its class. Mahindra has invested close to Rs 350 crore in developing the Maxximo mini truck which is powered by a2-cylinder CRDe engine. Mahindra hopes to sell 10,000-20,000 units in the light truck market in India. The company had showcased the cargo version of the Maxximo but a pick-up version on the same platform is also under development. A battery-operated version of the Mahindra Maxximo was also showcased at the Auto Expo. The company plans to introduce the compact pickups from its stable in the US market by the first quarter of 2010 and the mini trucks will be built on the Scorpio platform with a modified engine. Mahindra Renault Logan, an offspring of the joint venture between the Indian car manufacturer Mahindra and Mahindra and the French car manufacturer Renault though fetched good prospects initially for the company, has soon run into trouble and is hardly selling 500 units per month. The company started realizing that the much hyped model of theirs is not bringing them profit and that their future is at stake. They had realized this some time back but did not bother to look back to rectify the problem as they did not want to figure out the problem! But now the company is finally ready to accept it and is getting ready to revive the sagging sales of Mahindra Renault Logan. The company currently is in the lookout for more and more options to revive and boost the sales of the car. Of the many options that the company is considering are, to bring in a new model, abandon the Logan, and refresh the Logan and so on. This mid-sized sedan, which has supported the existence of the joint venture, will not be deserted by the company but instead will be given little tweaks here and there to make it a small car; in fact little tweaks will be too little to do the magic so perhaps some major ones. Mahindra and Mahindra is in talks with the Renault to see whether they can dress up Logan as a small car and thus reducing the excise duty of the car by including it in the small car sector, which piggy backs on low duty. Let us all wait for a new Logan which will be not only seen in the green paint with a yellow number plate. Labels: Mahindra-and-Mahindra, Mahindra-Renault-Logan, Renault

The growing American interest for Indian and Chinese car was a very interesting piece of news. The already proud Indian will be super proud to know about the rocketing Indian car market. And it is also true that this is the right time to venture into the American car market, but it is of course not a now or never situation and we will again get chance to prove ourselves, but it is just a matter of time before we do that. It seemed like a new era of acceptance of the Indian cars. This was the news that was celebrated by the Indian news media. And it seemed that the Indian car market, clearly knowing its strengths and weaknesses, is working towards a very bright tomorrow in the American industry, even accepting that it is not as strong as the Chinese car market, which has more indigenous cars than the Indian car market. “The two”, and we deliberately stress on this the two, Indian car brand names are Tata Motors and Mahindra &Mahindra. It seemed to be a challenging journey, but it certainly seemed like a fruitful one. Until yesterday when browsing through some questions asked by Americans, it suddenly seemed to be a very distant dream, the dream to win over the hearts of the American car buyers. Among the questions asked there were these most troubling ones - What is Tata? Is there a company called Tata? Mmmh! Well, the quick response was to answer all of them with a big yes. And the thoughts followed how it is possible that they don’t even know about the name of the biggest Indian conglomerate with different business interests under its wings. To comfort oneself, there is this answer – There are at least questions asked about Tata these days, there was a time when they did even know the name to ask such a question. Mahindra and Mahindra is in full swing to toughen its position in the competitive Indian car market. The car manufacturer is always seen with some new launches or strategies for its customers. This time the muscular car brand is in news for introducing pick-up version of the well accepted model Bolero from the SUV segment. Initially the new Bolero pick-up is launched only in Pune but very soon this new model will make its occurrence across the country pretty soon. This butch pick-up truck is christened as Bolero MaxiTruck; it will be a replacement of the MaXX MaxiTruck which is currently seen in the market. The old model will be phased out in a month as soon as the Bolero MaxiTruck hits the sales charts. The new version will be seen with the price tag of Rs 3.52 Lakh (ex-showroom, Pune). Bolero MaxiTruck is powered by a 61 bhp 2.5-litre engine with micro hybrid technology which results in higher fuel efficiency. Produced at the Kandivli plant, the model comes with the capacity of 1-tonne payload. Besides this the Mahindra and Mahindra is also planning to introduce the CNG version of the same model. After Pune, the next designation for the Bolero MaxiTruck includes Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat and West Bengal. The new model will be available across the country in 350 sales outlets. Labels: Mahindra, Mahindra-and-Mahindra, Mahindra-Bolero- MaxiTruck, New-Car-Launch, Pick-Up-Trucks

General Motors’ strategy to restructure the company by off-loading some of its struggling car brands is finally seeing the light of day. The company has managed to sell its European subsidiary Opel Motors to Magna from Canada, the military-style SUV brand Hummer has been taken over by a Chinese company and now a deal for the Saturn brand is in the making. Interestingly, GM is tapping Indian car majors like Tata Motors and Mahindra & Mahindra to consider a deal for Saturn. The grapevine in the U.S. suggests that bankers handling GM have been pushing for a possible sale to Indian car manufacturers. The small car brand Saturn is a familiar brand in the United States just like Hyundai and Maruti Suzuki in India. General Motor. It was setup by GM in 1985 to rival cost-effective Japanese car manufacturers like Toyota and Honda. Saturn’s small cars have attracted huge sales over the past decade but GM’s multi-brand strategy had prevented it from developing new models which might have led to its current sorry state. GM’s bankers favour Tata Motors as its acquisition of Daewoo, Jaguar, and Land Rover brands has brought it worldwide recognition. Mahindra too has been actively working on building a presence in the U.S. car market with its models Scorpio, Bolero, and Xylo. However, it might not be easy for Indian car manufacturers as they will have to fight off bids from Chinese buyers as well as Magna, a Canadian firm. Mahindra Xylo production is experiencing a rough ride as the deadlock between Mahindra and the laborers continues. The ongoing strike has eventually left the customers with a long waiting period for the car. Mahindra Xylo was launched in January this year, since then it had bagged more than 15,000 bookings within three months. The company had also increased the car’s production from 60 to 135 units per day seeing the huge demand for the car. Xylo proved to b e a mascot for the company which has brought good profit even in the time of economic slowdown. Similarly, car models like Maruti Suzuki Swift hatch, Swift DZire sedan, and Hyundai i20 saw good responses in the market.
Mahindra now fears the risk of losing its prospective buyers for the car to its main rival Toyota Innova if the production does not starts quickly. The Innova has a waiting period of four weeks and Xylo currently has a waiting period of four-six weeks. Xylo has its target audiences in urban and semi-urban areas who may take the delivery delays in a negative way. Mahindra is in tight spot now as it has to protect the market of its leading car model while maintaining a cordial relationship with its employees as well as customers. It’s a celebration time for Mahindra and Mahindra as three of its models are doing extremely great in the domestic market. Its flagship model the Scorpio, Bolero, and the recently launched Xylo are riding on the success lane after defeating its rivals. The company experienced momentous car sales in April and even during the period of October-December 2008. This clearly reveals the growing demand for Mahindra models in India. The below mentioned sales figure will take you to the actual picture of Mahindra’s sales. In the month of April more than 6000 Boleros were sold, Xylo saw sales of 3,509 units whereas Scorpio reported sales of 3,100 units. This figure will not make a good image unless they are compared with their competitors. Comparatively, Toyota Innova sold only 2,834 units, while Tata Sumo sold 1642 units, and Tata Safari saw demand of only 774 units. The launch of the Xylo significantly elevated the company’s market share capturing a good number of price conscious Indian car buyers. With this, Mahindra is slowing taking over its competitors in the Indian car market. Currently, the success ball is in Mahindra’s court. Let see for how long it is going to be there. Mahindra Xylo has received an overwhelming response from auto enthusiasts and car buyers across the country. The new Mahindra car is appreciated for its strong value proposition of status and luxurious comfort. In a span of only two weeks, the company has excitingly sold 1,788 cars and made a booking of over 4,000. Now the company rides the Xylo to South Africa. The versatile and spacious Xylo is expected to create a completely new platform in the South African market that is considered to be a strategic market for Mahindra’s overall globalization strategy. Suiting the taste and aspirations of South Africans car buyers, only the luxury model E8 and the base model E2 is introduced. Even the leading Mahindra Scorpio was driven to the same market. This clearly indicates that Mahindra drives all its successful models to the country. Maybe the company feels that South Africa is one of the most promising and dynamic car markets. The launch of Scorpio there was a new milestone in their successful journey and the launch of Xylo consolidates the company’s presence in the country. Though the car offers outstanding value, the question arises is it actually the right product for the South African market? The Xylo proved its credibility soon after few days of launch in India. Let’s see how much time the African market takes to ensure the same success of the car. Labels: Mahindra-and-Mahindra, Mahindra-Xylo

Mahindra & Mahindra is planning to bring ‘The Devil’ to India. Shocked? It’s not about any horror movie or a drama. ‘The Devil’ is the name of a new car model that Mahindra is planning to manufacture for the VIPs in India. Inspired by the Obamamobile (President Barack Obama's official car), the new car would be built on the lines of the presidential car. It is a good effort by Mahindra & Mahindra as there are no such cars in India even for our prime minister. The maximum security in cars for the VIPs in India is the bullet proof cars whereas the presidential Limo is fully armoured. The chassis projected with a 5-inch steel plate under the car protects in case of any kind of risky situation, for instance a bomb plantation under the car. The tyres are shred and puncture resistant, wrapped in steel rims underneath. This allows the car to travel on top speed even if the tyres are blasted. Interestingly, the cabin holds a foldaway desktop, laptop computer with wi-fi, state of the art satellite phone, and a direct line connection to the Vice president and Pentagon. The doors are 8-inch thick weighing as the cabin door of a 757 Boeing jet with armour plated. There are defence accessories like night vision cameras and pump-action shotguns. It is also armed with tear gas cannons. In case of any emergency, there are also bottles of blood. Besides all this, the Cadillac Limousine also has the ability to withstand the rocket and chemical attacks. Now this is the car which exists in practical. In India, we cannot expect any VIP car to be enhanced with all these features but yes atleast ten percent of this is necessary. Would Mahindra’s Devil possess all these safety and security features? With approaching 2009 election, car manufacturers are experiencing a sudden rise in SUV demand. As SUVs are easily driven on rough terrains and carries large number of seating capacity, they are preferred by most of the politicians for their election campaigns and rallies than a sedan or a small car. Now the car manufacturers are following the ‘ant strategy’ storing their food so that they can utilize it at the time of actual need. The car brands like Ford, Mahindra and Mahindra (M&M), and Tata Motors are storing their warehouses with SUVs foreseeing the demand of these vehicles in the forthcoming elections in the country. The Mahindra Scorpio, Ford Endeavour, and the Tata Safari are favourite among the politicians. Earlier, the Tata Sumo and the Toyota Qualis served the Indian politicians a lot during the election campaigns and rallies but now as they are discontinued, other SUVs from different brands have taken over their positions. It seems the elections excitement is not just among the politicians but also among the car manufactures who see this as an opportunity to make profit. Signs of growing popularity of green cars in the car industry are slowly getting prominent. And the only reason behind this is the rising mass concern on global warming. You would be shocked to know that vehicular pollution contributes about 70% to the total air pollution. Therefore, there is an immediate requirement of more environment friendly cars across the world. Earlier, car manufacturers and car owners were completely dependent on gasoline. But now, with the advent of new technologies, the dependency on conventional fuel has been reduced. No wonder why car manufacturers are heading towards the production of electric and hybrid cars. The Reva Maini and the Honda Civic Hybrid being the first electric car and hybrid car, respectively, in the country have gathered overwhelming response from Indian consumers. The success of these cars has inspired other car manufacturers to introduce green cars in the Indian car market. Presently, many car manufacturers are developing their future green cars. Mahindra after flavouring the success of Scorpio hybrid is now planning to gift more green cars to the Indian market. This time its green profile includes both electric and hybrid cars. The company has recently launched the scintillating Mahindra Xylo with the punch line ‘the era of sedans is over’. Truly, this MUV will give complex to sedans with its design and performance that are a blend of MUV and sedan. It seems Mahindra is in the process to overtake its rivals as it has also announced to launch 10 new car models in the coming time. Labels: Hybrid-Car, Indian-car-industry, Mahindra-and-Mahindra

After relishing the success of Mahindra Scorpio in India, Mahindra now plans to take its SUV overseas to the U.S. car market. In India, Scorpio is one of the highest selling sports utility vehicles. Since the car made its first launch, it has continuously been revamped and modified to meet the changing needs and demands of the Indian car buyers. The recently introduced micro-hybrid technology and the automatic version of the Scorpio have increased the value of the car in the market. The SUV is also in compliance to the U.S. emission and safety norms. With such a compatibility and high demand in the market, the company is sure that it will do wonders in the international market as well. American roads are already filled with a number of commercial vehicles from Mahindra. But now the company desires to roll out Scorpio on the same roads. It’s just awaiting a green signal from the homologation department in U.S. And if Mahindra gets a positive response, then it would be the first car manufacturer to roll out a passenger car in world's largest auto market. Car manufactures are not restricting themselves from introducing new cars in the car market despite of being badly affected by the slowdown. They are rather banking upon new car launches to propel their car sales figure towards positive scale. Around 50 new car models are likely to hit the market in 2009. Many car manufactures believes that new cars with upgraded features and fresh look will help to infuse the zeal among car buyers to own these cars. With this view in mind, car manufactures are planning to launch more new cars in the market. Experts also think that new cars launches will aid to smoke away the prevailing depression in the industry triggered by global recession. Recently, the new models like the Fiat Linea, Mahindra Xylo and the all-new Sonata Transform had made their grand entry in the car market. Now Mahindra is ready with its plans to roll out a portfolio of 10 new car models in the Indian car market. The count not only includes passenger cars but also commercial vehicles and low tonnage vehicles (LTV). All the cars are to be built on a specified platform designed on the basis of size, strength, and body construction. The company has also revealed its interest to launch a new SUV by 2010. Following this would be three to four car models designed and manufactured on the same platform. A couple of models are expected to be designed on that Xylo platform as well. Hope these proposed new cars be able to ignite a spark of revolution with their modern designs and features fulfilling the high-end need of the changing generation. Mahindra & Mahindra unveils the Thar concept in the Bologna Motor Show held in December 2008. In the Thar concept, Scorpio's CRDe engine along with a 4*4 BorgWarner is used. The company is mulling to launch this concept based car in the European market. Excitingly, it is designed on the platform of the Mahindra Classic and based on the Scorpio's powertrain. Fitting Scorpio's engine in a car like this clearly reflects the reliability and dependability of the Scorpio that is successfully running on Indian roads. Earlier there were queries whether such a concept would do well in the market or not. But Mahindra declares that retro vehicles like the Thar have established their own niche in the European market. However, in India, the car market will take some time to accept this concept. But, with the powerful engine packed with innovation, Mahindra can definitely drive the Thar to the Indian car market. Deeply affected by the impact of global recession, the Ford is planning to sell its unit Volvo car Corp. The company is set to dispose of its assets to cope up with the challenges brought by the slowdown in the global markets. Volvo being a big brand in itself has received tremendous response from bidders in the international market. Earlier, it was reported that the Mahindra & Mahindra is bidding for Volvo, which is now clearly denied by the company stating the news as a mere speculation. Media reports unveiled that the Ford is in talks with the Cerberus Capital and Texas Pacific Group to have a joint bid for its Volvo brand. Ford claims this move as an essential survival strategy in the falling car market. Along with Ford, the General Motors Corp. and Chrysler LLC are seeking for multi-billion-dollar US government bailout as they are suffering from a severe downturn in the domestic market due to recession. Though Mahindra was also looking for the acquisitions to cope up with these turbulent times. But then the company is now looking out for better measures and strategies. To build up its brand reputation in the international market, Mahindra has plans to introduce its popular SUV in the US car market in the upcoming year. Labels: Ford, Mahindra-and-Mahindra, Volvo-Car

Mahindra Xylo from the house of Mahindra & Mahindra was supposed to make its debut in the Indian car market in December. The excitement that surrounds this car is infinite as it is expected to rival the successful Toyota Innova. The car is designed with perfection in everything including style, power, performance, and fuel-efficiency. Creatively crafted with sturdy and tested exteriors, the car will ensure a safe ride. In addition, the interiors are adorned with special features that add comfort and ease to driving. Sadly, this upcoming car is further delayed to January 2009. It was almost ready to beat the top-selling SUVs in India in December. But, the recent Mumbai terror attack has forced the company to postpone the launch date of this car. Now, the company has decided to unveil the beauty and technical excellence of Mahindra Xylo in January 13, 2009 at a national function. The bookings for this car will start from January 14, 2009. It’s depressing to know that the recent terror attack in Mumbai, India’s financial capital, has added to the woes of car manufacturers. Mumbai, at present is experiencing a wave of dismay, fear, and anger. People are down in sentiments in wake of terror attack. Seeing the current scenario, the car manufacturers are compelled to postpone their new car launches. Mahindra & Mahindra and Fiat are the first ones to defer their car launches. These two car companies are Mumbai-based and have seen the devastated affects the terror has brought to the city. They are not ready to push customers for car sales at this stage when there is upheaval in Mumbai coupled with slowdown in the car market. Both the companies had plans to launch their car models, Fiat Linea and Mahindra Xylo, in December this year. But now, the launches have been delayed and are speculated to make their debut in January 2009. Both the launches are significant for the respective companies as these are considered to set new benchmarks in the Indian market. So, they want a fresh and cheerful environment at the time of launch. Labels: Car-Manufacturers, Mahindra-and-Mahindra, New-Car-Launch

Gone are the days for SUVs when they were highly appreciated and liked by Indian consumers. But rising inflation and high fuel prices have now put an end to the production of SUVs. Car manufacturers across the country especially the ones like Mahindra & Mahindra who are mainly into the production of SUVs are facing a tough time. These huge cars are numbered as high fuel guzzlers and have a bad eco-image. This has reduced the sale of Mahindra Scorpio, Toyota Innova, Maruti Gypsy and other cars in segment. With a keen desire to fight the battle and raise the market for SUVs, car manufacturers are now hunting for better and reliable alternatives that can drive the sale of these cars. The Mercedes, BMW, Audi and the Porsche are also planning to enter the SUV segment and produce compact cars in the segment with the combination of off-road qualities and luxury comforts. Long back Mahindra & Mahindra notified that it would be rolling out the Mahindra Ingenio in 2006 and there were lots of reports and information related to it but sadly it remained as news because the car is not yet launched. This model hails from the MUV (Multi-utility vehicle) class like the Toyota Innova, Qualis, the Tata Sumo Grande and the Chevrolet Tavera. Now we heard that the model is undergoing several tests and is expected on Indian roads very soon. But how long this launch will take is still a mystery. The same is repeated with Toyota’s Fortuner which was supposed be launched but is still on hold. Hope the car manufacturer prepare well for the launch before announcing and later disappearing with it. Labels: Car-manufacturers-in-India, Mahindra-and-Mahindra, MUVs
