Mahindra and Mahindra, one of the leading Indian auto companies is on a high after winning five auto awards. Mahindra Xylo, India’s first “sedanPlus” vehicle scored a hatrick with three awards from the automotive media. The awards that Mahindra Xylo bagged is the MUV of the Year from NDTV Profit Car and Bike awards, UV (Utility Vehicle) of the Year from CNBC TV 18 Overdrive awards and MPV of the Year from Zigwheels Car and Bike awards. The recently launched Mahindra Duro Power Scooter was declared the Scooter of the Year by NDTV Profit Car and Bike Awards. Mahindra’s Micro Hybrid technology also proved a winner when it received the Auto Bild India Golden Steering Wheel for Technology of the Year for its path-breaking FuelSmart system imbibed in the Micro Hybrid Technology. Mahindra and Mahindra have certainly come out of their utility car builder image it started with, many decades ago and has become a world class car maker in the world. Mahindra and Mahindra has tied up with French based auto maker Renault to produce the Mahindra Renault Logan. Mahindra have also come up with a plan to develop a brand new SUV platform that will eventually replace its flagship SUV Scorpio in the years to come. Mahindra recently launched the Mahindra Navistar trucks at the just culminated Auto Expo 2010 held in New Delhi to foray into the Indian and world trucking scene. The people mover from Mahindra and Mahindra, Xylo, was a huge hit, clocking heavy bookings soon after its launch. Now the guys at Mahindra and Mahindra have brought out a new variant of the popular Mahindra Xylo called the Mahindra Xylo D2 MDi. This variant has everything carried forward from the older model, be it the features that made the Xylo unique or the humongous interior space that competed for a slot with the current market leader, Toyota Innova. This new engine of the Xylo D2, MDi CRDe engine promises much more fuel efficiency, reduced emissions, lower maintenance cost and spare parts cost. Though the original Mahindra Xylo offers a four cylinder turbocharged diesel engine that churns out 112 bhp, the Mahindra Xylo D2 sports 2.5 litre MDi CRDe engine that generates 95bhp and 215Nm of Torque and compiles the current BS III emission norms. Mahindra Xylo D2 is married to a 5-speed manual transmission and claims fuel efficiency of 13kmpl. This conveys one thing that the D2 certainly will be adequate on good roads and in cities and fleet owners surely will make a dash for this variant as they do not care about the power and torque of the vehicle. This move of Mahindra has kept us wondering if the about the earlier promised Xylo mHawk engine will ever come to the Indian market. The Mahindra Xylo D2 MDi will be available in three colours, gold shimmer, mist silver and fiery black. Mahindra Xylo D2 is priced at Rs 630000 lakhs (ex-showroom, Delhi). The Xylo D2 will be on display at the Mahindra pavilion at the Auto Expo 2010. Labels: Mahindra and Mahindra, Mahindra-Xylo, Mahindra-Xylo-D2, Toyota-Innova

Tata Nano is one permanent fixture in Carazoo.com for a long time now. This little wonder car has been around in the portal for many reasons and continues to be doing what it does best. Earning rave reviews. The world’s cheapest car has won one of the most significant awards of the country – Indian Car of the Year aka ICOTY. ICOTY and IMOTY (Indian Motorcycle of the Year) awards are the awards that are unbiased and exhaustive evaluation of all the new cars and motorcycles launched in the calendar year of 2009 in India. Although Tata Nano was a contender for this award amongst other heavy weights like were the Chevrolet Cruze, Honda Jazz, Fiat Linea, Fiat Grande Punto, Maruti Suzuki Ritz, Mahindra Xylo, Skoda Superb, Tata Indigo Manza, and Toyota Fortuner, Tata Nano emerged victorious in the end garnering 63 points. The Managing Director of Tata Motors, Mr. P.M. Telang, received the award from the Vice Chairman & Managing Director of JK Tyre Industries Ltd., Dr. R. P. Singhania, at a ceremony in New Delhi. Kawasaki Ninja 250R won the IMOTY award with 53 points. A 11-member expert jury members of the 2010 ICOTY included Yogendra Pratap and Vikrant Singh of Auto Bild India, Gautam Sen and Bob Rupani of Auto India, Bijoy Kumar Y and Srinivas Krishnan of Business Standard Motoring, Aspi Bhathena of Car India, Sirish Chandran and Bertand D’souza of Overdrive and Vardhan Kondvikar and Girish Karkera of Top Gear India. All these jury members evaluate and test cars as part of their journalistic work and are known for their analytic skills and professional competence. Once a year they come together to vote for the ICOTY. To qualify for the 2009 awards, only all-new cars and motorcycles, whatever the country of their origin, that went on sale in showrooms across the country before December 1, 2009 were considered. Existing cars and motorcycles that have had mere cosmetic facelifts or small mechanical tweaks do not qualify for consideration. The jury members judged the cars and motorcycles on various parameters such as price, fuel efficiency, design, comfort, safety, maneuverability, performance, functionality, environmental responsibility and driver/rider satisfaction among others. In addition, technical innovation and value for money were particularly important factors while deciding on the winner. The selection of the winner is carried out by a simple voting system with each jury member having twenty-five points to allot to at least four cars/bikes. They can give a maximum of 10 points to any one of them. A very fair and transparent system makes the ICOTY and IMOTY amongst the most credible and coveted car and motorcycle awards in India. Mahindra Xylo production is experiencing a rough ride as the deadlock between Mahindra and the laborers continues. The ongoing strike has eventually left the customers with a long waiting period for the car. Mahindra Xylo was launched in January this year, since then it had bagged more than 15,000 bookings within three months. The company had also increased the car’s production from 60 to 135 units per day seeing the huge demand for the car. Xylo proved to b e a mascot for the company which has brought good profit even in the time of economic slowdown. Similarly, car models like Maruti Suzuki Swift hatch, Swift DZire sedan, and Hyundai i20 saw good responses in the market.
Mahindra now fears the risk of losing its prospective buyers for the car to its main rival Toyota Innova if the production does not starts quickly. The Innova has a waiting period of four weeks and Xylo currently has a waiting period of four-six weeks. Xylo has its target audiences in urban and semi-urban areas who may take the delivery delays in a negative way. Mahindra is in tight spot now as it has to protect the market of its leading car model while maintaining a cordial relationship with its employees as well as customers. Mahindra Xylo has received an overwhelming response from auto enthusiasts and car buyers across the country. The new Mahindra car is appreciated for its strong value proposition of status and luxurious comfort. In a span of only two weeks, the company has excitingly sold 1,788 cars and made a booking of over 4,000. Now the company rides the Xylo to South Africa. The versatile and spacious Xylo is expected to create a completely new platform in the South African market that is considered to be a strategic market for Mahindra’s overall globalization strategy. Suiting the taste and aspirations of South Africans car buyers, only the luxury model E8 and the base model E2 is introduced. Even the leading Mahindra Scorpio was driven to the same market. This clearly indicates that Mahindra drives all its successful models to the country. Maybe the company feels that South Africa is one of the most promising and dynamic car markets. The launch of Scorpio there was a new milestone in their successful journey and the launch of Xylo consolidates the company’s presence in the country. Though the car offers outstanding value, the question arises is it actually the right product for the South African market? The Xylo proved its credibility soon after few days of launch in India. Let’s see how much time the African market takes to ensure the same success of the car. Labels: Mahindra-and-Mahindra, Mahindra-Xylo
