In a statement made in the Indian parliament, the Indian government has asked car manufacturers to contemplate on making cars specially designed for physically challenged persons. Arun Yadav, the Minister of State for Heavy Industries and Public Enterprises expressed the will of the Government that it wants the car manufacturers in India to concentrate in making at least one or two models for the physically challenged persons. This step by the Government comes as a welcome sign for people in India as the car manufacturers are being finally waken up from their deep slumber in neglecting the handicapped people. To top it all, the Government has been doling out excise duty concessions on cars and other vehicles meant for handicapped people. This tax benefits should lure the car manufacturers in India to toy with the idea of coming out with at least a couple of models designed for the physically challenged people. Some Indian carmakers were earlier providing cars with automatic transmission for physically challenged persons but had to discontinue the same as the demand for such vehicles was very less and occasional and making them available readily in the market is not practical in terms of economy. But the growing Indian car industry makes such customized cars and other vehicles on specific order to suit the disability of person. Some of car manufacturers who tune the cars according to the needs of physically challenged drivers are Hyundai with their Santro, Mahindra with their Scorpio, Maruti Suzuki on their Omni, and some of the higher end car manufacturers. The Mahindra Scorpio ‘mighty muscular’ hides a lot of surprises under its canopy. One of these is the Micro Hybrid technology that works in conjunction with its mHawk engine to make the SUV more environment-friendly. Mahindra has gone to great lengths to promote this new technology as a champion of environmental conservation by burning less fuel and producing lesser emissions. The Micro Hybrid setup is an advanced and path breaking technology. As the term “hybrid” denotes, though the Mahindra Scorpio is not exactly a hybrid, the SUV is capable of switching into standby mode at certain intervals during running to burn less fuel. The co-relation to Hybrid technology is that Hybrid engines switch between two different types of fuels or modes of operation to achieve better utilization of primary fuel. Mahindra’s Micro Hybrid technology intelligently switches the Scorpio’s engine into idle mode when not required so that fuel can be conserved. It restarts the engine when the clutch pedal is stepped on or gear is engaged back from neutral. The revolutionary technology is ideal for heavy city traffic conditions. Mahindra is confident that this novel technology saves around 5% of fuel. Lately, Mahindra has been focusing increasingly on Greener Concepts such as Bio-Diesel and Hybrid-electric technologies and has been conducting various types of research on cost-effective hybrid cars. With the new Mahindra Scorpio with Micro Hybrid technology, it has achieved compliance with the latest Bharat Stage IV emission norms in the country. Micro Hybrid is just the start of Mahindra’s “hybrid dreams” and the Scorpio is a step towards Mahindra’s adding its own hybrid cars on Indian roads.
