Mahindra and Mahindra achieved another milestone on Saturday when it inaugurated its Rs 5,000-crore new manufacturing plant in the industrial hub at Chakan. This plant, supposedly, will enable the company to produce its entire range of automobile products under one roof.
This facility, which is spread over a span of 700 acres, will have an initial capacity of three lakh units and will manufacture M&M products including the 0.75-tonne Maxximo, the 49-tonne Mahindra Navistar truck and the sports utility vehicle (SUV) range that it plans to launch in the US market.
"The plant has been envisioned as the hub of innovation and technology for the Mahindra Group, with several new products, including our new SUV and pick-up line rolling out from here," Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M) President (Automotive Sector) Pawan Goenka said in a statement.
Goenka also mentioned that the Chakan facility incorporates flexible features, which will allow the company to respond rapidly to changing customer needs.
With a capacity of three lakh units, the first phase of the construction of the plant, has consumed an initial investment of about Rs 2500 crore. The second phase will further increase the investment to Rs 5,000 crore.
The plant was inaugurated in the presence of Maharashtra Chief Minister Ashok Chavan and M&M Vice Chairman and MD Anand Mahindra.
Recently M&M had announced that it was planning to launch at least nine new vehicles by March 2011 and the inauguration of this plant goes on to prove their commitment.
In the beginning, Mahindra and Mahindra will manufacture the entire range of medium and heavy commercial vehicles from the joint venture with Navistar ranging from 25-49 tonne tippers and trucks. It will also manufacture other models if the increase in demand required the company to do so.
Now, let’s talk about something that Mahindra and Mahindra should really be applauded for. We are talking about the eco-friendly initiatives that the M&M Chakan plant has taken. The Chakan plant comes fully equipped with numerous eco-friendly features. Solar energy and waste heat from the oven exhaust are used to reduce the consumption of LPG and electricity in the paint shop. This leads to reduction of 3,500 tonnes of carbon dioxide annually at full volume.
This initiative from M&M will set an example for many auto manufacturers. Labels: Chakan Plant, Chakan Plant Inauguration, Mahindra and Mahindra, Mahindra Chakan, Pawan Goenka

The trucking scene in India certainly seems to have changed a lot as the global biggies starting plying in the Indian truck market since the new millennium. Hitching a ride on this trend is Mahindra and Mahindra, once a hard core utility jeep maker who has entered the now lucrative truck manufacturing business in India to move the new emerging India ahead. Mahindra Navistar Automotives Ltd. (MNAL), the commercial vehicle joint venture between Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd. (M&M) and Navistar Inc. of USA has unveiled the MN 49 and MN 40 trucks for the Indian market at the 10th Auto Expo held in New Delhi. In 2005, Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd. and International Truck and Engine Corporation, the operating company of Navistar, entered into a JV to manufacture light, medium and heavy commercial vehicles for India as well as export markets. The joint venture is in the process of addressing every segment of the commercial vehicle market from 3.5 tonne GVW to 49 tonne GVW with variants of passenger transport, cargo and specialized load applications. Mahindra Navistar aims to expand its product line over the next two years to emerge as a full range commercial vehicle player. With this JV, a new chapter has been written in the Indian trucking scenario. Mahindra Navistar’s MN 49 and MN 40 trucks, the 25 tonne and 31 tonne trucks respectively have been designed, developed and tested for Indian roads and usage conditions and are capable of negotiating the toughest terrain. These trucks are made for India and made in India by utilizing the world renowned trucking expertise of Navistar Inc of over 175 years. These trucks, MN 49 and MN 40 have been developed keeping the unique requirements of the Indian market in mind. They incorporate Navistar’s MaxxForce® engine which has proven itself across the world for its power and fuel efficiency. Their spacious and ergonomic design coupled with a better power to weight ratio and a high load carrying capacity makes them ideal for quick delivery of goods. Mahindra Navistar trucks are powered by the world renowned MaxxForce® 7.2 litre CRDI engine which is also the most modern engine in its class in terms of product configuration as well as components technology for the HCV segment in India. With the 4-valve per cylinder technology, the engine has been designed for better performance, higher power, better fuel efficiency and stricter adherence to emission standards. The transmission of these mammoth trucks consists of 9 forward syncromesh gears and 1 reverse. Mahindra Navistar trucks are equipped with tilt and telescopic power steering which make driving these beasts a breeze, while the GPS vehicle tracking system allows you to keep abreast of the truck’s progress along its route. Both the MN 49 and MN 40 trucks have been rigorously tested and meet stringent international safety standards. The spacious and ergonomically designed cabin with various sleeper options also makes them suitable for continuous long hauls. The Mahindra Navistar range of medium and heavy commercial vehicles is being manufactured at M&M's new Greenfield Plant at Chakan, near Pune. The plant, which spans over 700 acres, has been set up with investments of over Rs. 4,000 crore and will produce other M&M products as well. Mahindra Navistar has put in place an extensive sales and service network to cater to its customers. In addition to the existing network of dealers, MNAL is adding 50 new dealers across the country. Besides this, MNAL will also draw on the vast pool of M&M auto and tractor channel partners to use as an extended network for servicing customers’ needs. The people mover from Mahindra and Mahindra, Xylo, was a huge hit, clocking heavy bookings soon after its launch. Now the guys at Mahindra and Mahindra have brought out a new variant of the popular Mahindra Xylo called the Mahindra Xylo D2 MDi. This variant has everything carried forward from the older model, be it the features that made the Xylo unique or the humongous interior space that competed for a slot with the current market leader, Toyota Innova. This new engine of the Xylo D2, MDi CRDe engine promises much more fuel efficiency, reduced emissions, lower maintenance cost and spare parts cost. Though the original Mahindra Xylo offers a four cylinder turbocharged diesel engine that churns out 112 bhp, the Mahindra Xylo D2 sports 2.5 litre MDi CRDe engine that generates 95bhp and 215Nm of Torque and compiles the current BS III emission norms. Mahindra Xylo D2 is married to a 5-speed manual transmission and claims fuel efficiency of 13kmpl. This conveys one thing that the D2 certainly will be adequate on good roads and in cities and fleet owners surely will make a dash for this variant as they do not care about the power and torque of the vehicle. This move of Mahindra has kept us wondering if the about the earlier promised Xylo mHawk engine will ever come to the Indian market. The Mahindra Xylo D2 MDi will be available in three colours, gold shimmer, mist silver and fiery black. Mahindra Xylo D2 is priced at Rs 630000 lakhs (ex-showroom, Delhi). The Xylo D2 will be on display at the Mahindra pavilion at the Auto Expo 2010. Labels: Mahindra and Mahindra, Mahindra-Xylo, Mahindra-Xylo-D2, Toyota-Innova

It looks like Renault is having a very tough time ahead. Its joint venture with Mahindra and Mahindra seems to be heading nowhere. And now when both the companies have realized that the joint venture is not bringing them any treasure to fill up their coffers, they have finally decided to talk it out. It is still not known what will be the final decision of both the companies. But of the many issues that the companies are facing right now, the most important is the unsuccessful tenure of Logan, the only car that is launched of the joint venture between the two companies. It does not look like the Renault will walk away from the partnership or the Indian car market. And the very obvious reason is that the Renault still wants to have its fingers dipped in the Indian car market pie, which is the most happening car market of the world at the moment. In a joint venture between the two companies, 51 per cent of the stake is held by Mahindra and Mahindra while the rest of 49 per cent is being held by French car maker Renault. The companies will be discussing on whether it is feasible to launch a new car at this time and what should be the future plans to remain in the business. We desperately hope against hope that both the companies sort it out in a cordial way and will not think of a break up. Renault’s ultra-low cost car plan also seems to be affected by the perplexity that is happening between the two companies. Bajaj, its partner in producing the ultra-low cost car, seems to be not happy with the proposal of partnering only with Renault, leaving aside Mahindra & Mahindra. Bajaj already had brand issues with Renault. And the company is not comfortable in joining hands with Renault, which is already in turmoil. Well as the companies are still in discussion, let us all keep our fingers crossed for an intelligent decision from the companies. The Scorpio fans who are waiting to buy, then this the right time as the car manufacturer is offering a ‘big’ cash discount of Rs 34,000-70,000 on its Scorpio. Very recently the M&M launched the all new Scorpio Mighty Muscular with attractive exterior and interior. But what made the Mahindra’s to offer such a huge cut in price? To start with is the commodity price which has come down compared to the prices in December. With manufacturing of Xylo, an MPV the company also learned the art of saving money with out compromising on quality. And these reasons helped them to take the decision of bringing down the Scorpio prices. The aforesaid reason could be the true but there are also other reasons that completely support the price slash. Like, with the launch of the new Mighty Muscular Scorpio, the company wants to finish the old stocks of Scorpio so that the new version will start its sale with full swing. Whatever be the reason, all that matters is that the buyers are at the gaining end. So the don’t waste your time thinking. If you think, the Scorpio is worth your choice, then go ahead a make a good deal. Labels: Car-Manufacturers, Mahindra and Mahindra, Mahindra Scorpio, Scorpio Discount, SUV

Mahindra’s Xylo is all set to heat up this winter. The car seems to be one of the most ambitious projects of Mahindra & Mahindra after the successful model Mahindra Scorpio. Xylo is positioned between the Scorpio and Bolero and is expected to coup Toyota Innova the coming season. Innova is one of the most successful MPVs running on Indian roads. Since the car has made its entry in the Indian car market, it has headed its segment. But now, the proposed Mahindra Xylo is ready to give a strong competition to the Innova. The new MPV was earlier christened as Ingenio and is created keeping in mind the lifestyle and luxury aspirations of its valued customers. It is expected to reflect a blend of technology, style, and performance. Speculated to be priced around Rs 7 Lakh, the new MPV will be rolled out from Mahindra’s new plant situated at Nashik near Pune. Now, the time has come for Innova to fight a tough competition. Well, we have to wait to see who wins the race. Labels: Indian-car-market, Mahindra and Mahindra, Mahindra-Xylo

Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M), a leading SUV manufacturer, lays its eyes on fuel-efficient petrol technology to drive its new range of cars in the global market. The company plans to strap this new generation petrol engines on its new global SUV christened as next-generation Scorpio and on other upcoming cars globally. M&M feels that a complete transformation to diesel engine has no hidden wonders. There are markets like Middle-East and the US, which are driven by petrol powertrains and also offer immense advantages on such engines. With this, the company aims to create a perfect balance between performance and fuel-efficiency with its new petrol technology. Mahindra Scorpio Automatic is a live example of the perfect balance created by the company. The only difference is that in this new SUV, the company has created a balance in a diesel engine. But now it plans to move ahead with petrol SUV segment. With its eye on petrol technology, will M&M replace the mHawk diesel engine with its new powertrain? Or will it roll out a petrol counterpart? Mahindra & Mahindra and Renault currently hold a share of 51:49 in the partnership. This partnership was signed between both the companies for manufacturing and retailing their most leading car, the Logan. But now, with the increasing pressures and challenges, the joint venture desires to extend their retailing partnership to sell Renault’s future cars. Mahindra has no recent plans to introduce more cars to India. That’s the reason why the company is willing to extend the partnership with Renault to market the upcoming Renault’s car. Mahindra is keen to make the Mahindra-Renault centre as the distribution network to sell Renault’s new cars. The new cars are expected to be launched from Chennai in the next two years. The negotiated partnership between the two companies will be used to sell those cars under the brand of Mahindra-Renault Ltd. Will Renault agree to the partnership? Will Renault share its success of the proposed cars with Mahindra? Any guesses? Labels: cars-India, Mahindra and Mahindra, Mahindra-Renault, New-Cars

Several big car brands are being off-loaded by American car manufacturers. Ford recently handed over the iconic brands Jaguar and Land Rover to Tata Motors. Car manufacturing biggies such as Ford and General Motors have a large number of popular brands under their wing. In the ever changing global market of cars, these large car corporations have found it difficult to sustain a vast spread of car brands and models and have resorted to unloading a few of those that have been pulling them down. General Motors has decided to sell off the popular ‘Hummer’ brand. In the glory days, Hummer has rolled out several bad boy SUVs across the world. These mean machines have been quite popular with the US army and have seen a lot of action in battle. They have even starred in quite a few hollywood war movies.
General Motors is putting the Hummer up for sale. Both Tata Motors and Mahindra & Mahindra, who were front runners for the Jaguar and Land Rover dealer, have shown interest. Labels: Hummer, Mahindra and Mahindra, Tata Motors

After Maruti Sizuki and Honda, it is now the Mahindra and Mahindra to raise car prices. The prices of raw materials such as steel, aluminum, rubber have seen a sharp rise of 25-30 percent since January 2008. This has added pressure to the already squeezed car sector which has been witnessing decreased new car sales. Mahindra sources its materials from Indian vendors which were deeply hit. It will bring the new prices into effect from May 19. All the serious off-roads and potential Scorpio buyers who were planning to buy these cars can go for it now. I have been quite fascinated with Mahindra’s vehicles, because I am using Scorpio for the past two years. I have no complaints so far about its mileage, engine, and performance. I am planning to buy another of Mahindra’s cars – a new multi-utility vehicle called Ingenio. It was supposed to launch in Feb or March this year, but when I went to get some details about the Ingenio, I was told by the dealer that M&M has postponed the launch by a few months. I guess Mahindra and Renault are waiting to make Ingenio a grand success in India after it failed to receive a good response to the Logan. I heard that these guys are restyling its interior and exterior and adding more comfort and safety features. Can’t wait to get my hands on this one! “Mahindra Global Designing Company” sounds weird but it’s true. Mahindra & Mahindra Motors, a company which started off making tractors heralding the Indian green revolution is now diverging into automotive design. It seems M&M has set its eyes on becoming a global auto design centre. It is set to acquire GR-Grafica Ricerca Design Srl, an Italian auto designing, body engineering and feasibility company. GR’s 60-strong design team is highly experienced in the area of automotive design. After acquisition, the new subsidiary will be called “Mahindra Graphic Research and Design”. Through this acquisition, M&M will get a strong foothold in the European car manufacturing business. The deal is expected to be wrapped by the end of January. Considering the latest progress of Indian Companies in the auto world, the next best selling world car might come from India. Labels: Car-Designs, Mahindra and Mahindra

Tata Motors seems to be winning the race for the acquisition of Jaguar and Land Rover car brands. The prospective deal will be another feather in Tata’s cap after it acquired British steel major Corus in early 2007. Although compatriot Mahindra and Mahindra is also trying to woo the British icons, Tata motors has emerged the preferred bidder for Jaguar and Land Rover companies which are finding it difficult to cope with the increased competition from Asian car brands. As the owner of the brands Ford Motors is planning to concentrate on its North American operations it wants to off-load Jaguar and Land Rover. The third bidder, a private equity firm One Equity Partners, is not a serious contender. Anyway, Indians have the reason to smile as the brands look likely to come to India, either through Tata or through Mahindra. Both the companies have immensely contributed to the progress of Indian industries. Tata is taking India to the territories Indians dared not venture. As for Mahindra, its tractors and pickup trucks have carved a niche in international market. Labels: Ford Motor, Jaguar and Land Rover, Mahindra and Mahindra, Tata Motor
