Here is another breakthrough in the field of science and technology. India’s first Tri-fuel hybrid car was launched in the capital recently. What’s more, to add to the news, the car has been developed by the students of a Mechanical Automation Branch of Amity School of Engineering and Technology (ASET). It’s their hard work and dedication that made this launch successful.

This mesmerizing beauty runs on Petrol, LPG, and electricity. It serves the purpose of being economical as well as pollution free. The team of 10 students prepared the car with a budget of Rs 2.5 lakh. It can run at a maximum speed of 60 km/h using its internal combustion engine and 42 km/h using its batteries.

A little slow we agree but the mileage balances it out. It has been tested successfully for more than 400 kms on Delhi roads to encounter city conditions. You can drive this small miracle for 35-40 miles on one-litre of petrol while on batteries it can run 80-90 kms on a single charge. This eco-friendly, zero emission, and low maintenance car is just what the Indian roads want. Maybe a manufacturer will pick up the design and have it ready for mass market sale soon.

After we’ve seen the ever more crowded Indian market’s new launches, here’s the time to see another attempt from Nissan Motor Co. to export Indian-built low cost cars. The autos are likely to enter with a price tag lesser than $5000 in the US. Sometimes you just have to say WOW. And that was my first reaction when I thought of comparing the high cost cars and the new attempt from Nissan. These low-cost cars are said to launch in the US by 2010.

Measuring the scope of low-cost cars in the US, Nissan is planning to set a joint venture with Bajaj Auto Ltd, the second-biggest motorcycle maker in India. Nissan is good at meeting their expectations in almost all the countries they have entered till date. The Chief Executive Officer, Carlos Ghosn said that this would be a major impact on the US car market - the worlds biggest.

The problem is that the vehicles that are going to be exported from India have to be further modified to meet US safety and emissions standards. We just have to wait and watch for the outcome, because if this works then we will have the same cars sold here in India and no one can say no to a safer car!

Honda Motors are holding serious talks with the Indian government to establish rules for hybrid vehicles to be sold in India. Honda is interested in gasoline-electric hybrid cars that meet great expectations of mileage.

India is currently one of major auto markets, but it has no definite set of rules and regulations when it comes to hybrid vehicles. If the Indian authorities give the green signal, Honda will introduce its Civic hybrid, which is selling like hot-cakes in North America, Europe, and Japan. Once the talks are over, Honda will decide on when to launch hybrid cars in India.

Because Indians are most concerned about the price and fuel economy, hybrid cars will be an answer to all our prayers and I bet the environment will be pretty happy too! Hybrid cars give 80% better mileage, without compromising on performance, compared to conventional gasoline cars. Emission is also comparatively low.

Subsidies for hybrid cars are a must as they cost more than the usual petrol and diesel cars. Honda is trying to work on this front. Once Honda gets permit to launch their hybrid vehicle, all other manufacturers will think of doing so. The more hybrid vehicles run in India the lesser the pollution.

Hindustan Motors India with Mitsubishi recently unveiled Cedia Select that uses dual fuel - petrol and ALPG (Auto Liquid Petroleum Gas). This dual fueled Cedia is low on emission and is high on performance. Highly developed microprocessor organized technology helps the vehicle to give good mileage on both the fuels without negotiating on performance.

This new variant is fitted with “sequent” technology to manage the fuel economy when the vehicle is running on LPG. The Cedia Select is capable of covering 1000 kms with a full tank of 50 liter petrol and 48 liter LPG.

Dual-fueled Cedia Select comes with loads of striking features including airbags, ABS with electronic brake distribution (EBD), CD/MP3 player, wood and metal-trimmed interiors, windshield antennae, and alloy wheels. All these are made available for just rupees 8.60 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi).

This is the best vehicle to choose to save our environment without compromising on fuel economy and performance. The dual fuel system in the new Cedia comes as a factory fitted equipment. The emission is relatively low while using both types of fuel. Hope other companies follow this example and that the various states in India soon accept and adapt to this technology in vehicles.
