Hyundai LogoHyundai Motor India, India’s second largest car maker on Monday achieved significant milestone when the cumulative exports of the car company crossed the 10 lakh mark.

HW Park, managing director & CEO, HMIL said, “Reaching the 10 lakh export car landmark is not only a significant milestone but also a matter of great pride for the Hyundai family as it showcases the global success story that Hyundai as a brand enjoys.” He also flagged off the one millionth car from the Chennai Port Trust in Chennai.

HMIL began exporting cars in 1999 when it shipped a batch of 20 Santro’s to Nepal and it reached the first milestone of exporting 100,000 cars in four years and ten months in October, 2004. In October, 2005 it exported its 200,000th car followed by its 300,000th car and 400,000th car in October, 2006 and August, 2007 respectively. By exporting the 500,000th car in March, 2008, HMIL had become the fastest Indian passenger car manufacturer to achieve this milestone. In a little over a decade since Hyundai has been present in India it has become the leading exporter of passenger cars with a market share of 66% of the total exports of passenger cars from India making it a significant contributor to the Indian automobile industry.

The company has also started exporting cars to Australia and is the only manufacturer to do so in such a short span of a decade presence.

Currently, Hyundai Motor India is exporting four of its popular models namely - Santro, i10, i20 and Accent to 110 countries. In 2009, in spite of a global slowdown, Hyundai Motor India’s exports grew by 10.7%. In 2010 Hyundai plans to add 10 new markets with Australia being the latest entrant to the list. The first shipment to Australia is of 500 units of the i20 and the total i20 export to Australia is expected to be in the region of 15,000 per annum.

In 2008, Hyundai witnessed the fastest exports of five lakh cars from India to various destinations including UK, HMIL Vice-President (Sales and Marketing) Arvind Saxena said. Terming it as a "significant milestone", State Industries Secretary Rajeev Ranjan said, “It is no small achievement. This has been done in a record time". "In 2008, they have exported five lakh cars but this year they have doubled it. It is a significant milestone” he said.

Lauding Hyundai's feat, Chennai Port Trust Chairman Subhash Kumar said two multilevel car parkings have been planned in the Port. Urging the Union government to continue the fiscal stimulus package, Saxena said exports may come down if it was withdrawn. "If the stimulus package is withdrawn, then the exports may come down. We have been emphasising the need for extending it", he said adding the demand came down 7.5 per cent in countries like Russia due to the global meltdown.

Hyundai Motor India Ltd. (HMIL) has said that it is confident of adding 10 new markets to its export map in 2010. Currently, HMIL cars are sent to 110 countries.

Hyundai i10 EV

Hyundai Motors is following in the Tata Motors footsteps at least for the moment. Hyundai on Wednesday has announced that it will consider bringing in its electric vehicles into the Indian market as Hyundai is all set to capture the gradually increasing market for these cars.

Hyundai Motor India which is a 100 per cent subsidiary of the Korean giant, showcased its electric version of its small car i10 at the ongoing 10th Auto Expo in New Delhi.

Speaking to the reporters after unveiling the electric version of the popular Indian small car, Arvind Saxena, Director of Marketing and Sales for Hyundai Motor India Ltd expressed hope that the the new found interest in electric vehicles would present Hyundai with a huge opportunity to bring in electric vehicles technology to the Indian market in the near future.

Though he denied giving any time-frame as to when the electric cars will be introduced in India, but we speculate that Hyundai also might study the feasibility of the Indian markets to bring in the electric cars here.

It should be noted that the i10 electric was unveiled at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September last year and the company plans to produce the car in limited numbers for the South Korean market from this year. Hyundai i10 Electric is a zero-emission vehicle that reconciles motoring with the environmental aspirations of customers looking for a vehicle with the best possible ecological footprint."

Previously, in 2007, Hyundai had launched the Hyundai i10 with internal combustion engine in 2007.At present; HMIL is the country's largest car exporter and the second largest car manufacturer with a line up of alternate fuel technology in vehicles like the CNG and LPG versions of its small car Hyundai Santro. This would be followed with its sedan Accent and small car Hyundai i10.

Currently, only Reva produces electric cars for the Indian market but recently Tata Motors also announced its plans to bring in the Tata Indica Vista electric in collaboration with a Norwegian company to ply it here in India after studying the feasibility.

Hyundai Motor India's pavilion displayed its futuristic technology in the form of concept vehicles to highlight the superior and advanced technology that the company has pioneered. The company also showcased the sports variant of its luxury sedan Genesis at the auto show.

In a statement made in the Indian parliament, the Indian government has asked car manufacturers to contemplate on making cars specially designed for physically challenged persons.

Arun Yadav, the Minister of State for Heavy Industries and Public Enterprises expressed the will of the Government that it wants the car manufacturers in India to concentrate in making at least one or two models for the physically challenged persons. This step by the Government comes as a welcome sign for people in India as the car manufacturers are being finally waken up from their deep slumber in neglecting the handicapped people.

To top it all, the Government has been doling out excise duty concessions on cars and other vehicles meant for handicapped people. This tax benefits should lure the car manufacturers in India to toy with the idea of coming out with at least a couple of models designed for the physically challenged people.

Some Indian carmakers were earlier providing cars with automatic transmission for physically challenged persons but had to discontinue the same as the demand for such vehicles was very less and occasional and making them available readily in the market is not practical in terms of economy.

But the growing Indian car industry makes such customized cars and other vehicles on specific order to suit the disability of person.

Some of car manufacturers who tune the cars according to the needs of physically challenged drivers are Hyundai with their Santro, Mahindra with their Scorpio, Maruti Suzuki on their Omni, and some of the higher end car manufacturers.

Santro is all set to get a new variant by the end of this year. Though the specifications of the new variant are not yet disclosed, it is speculated to get subtle changes in the design while the engine and the price tag is expected to remain same.

The car is also available in CNG and LPG versions introduced in 2007 and 2008, respectively.

With a price tag ranging from Rs 2.6 Lakh to Rs 3 Lakh (ex-showroom Delhi), the car offers unmatched performance, striking interior and exterior designs, and impressive fuel efficiency. It is also ranked by the J.D. Power Asia as one of the dependable cars in India. It is one of the favourite compact cars of Indian buyers. Shah Rukh Khan will be using Hyundai Tucson for himself and his entourage accompanying him in South Africa. The car will be for his exclusive use during his stay in South Africa.

Hyundai Santro is a bestselling model from the company’s product line up in South Africa. The Indian subsidiary of the company which manufactures the Santro and the i10 exported around 10,000 models to the South African markets.

Mr. Khan has been the brand ambassador of Hyundai Motors since the company entered India with its flagship model, the Santro. King Khan also created a record by becoming the only brand ambassador to have a longest association with a company. In today’s world of glamour and show, top companies invest colossal amount to hire well-know face for promotional activities. In India, most of the business houses appoint popular Bollywood actors and cricketers as their brand ambassadors for advertising.

The trend of celebrities endorsing products started in United States and this gradually made a move to India. Following the same custom, many car manufacturers today have appointed famous celebrities as their brand ambassadors. We have a live example of Hyundai's brand ambassador, Shahrukh Khan.

If you go down the memory lane, you will recollect that the Hyundai Santro was not so successful in the market initially. After Shahrukh was brought into picture for promoting Hyundai's ‘Sunshine Car’, it suddenly took the sales speed in the market. Since then, there was no looking back for the car. Now it is considered as one of the best compact cars in India. It won’t be wise to say that it only became successful on the words of its ambassador but then this definitely adds a reason to ponder.

Moving in line with Hyundai, Ford also introduces a new brand ambassador for its leading SUV, the Ford Endeavour. A SUV that symbolizes style, power, success, and performance need to have an ambassador who embodies these key attributes. All these special Endeavour characteristics were found in a proud customer and renowned Indian celebrity Sunil Shetty.

With Sunil Shetty as a new role model for the car, the company expects still higher sales with a key desire to beat recession and win over other SUVs on Indian roads.

Hyundai’s ‘Sunshine Car’ Santro which experienced slow sales for sometime is now slowly gearing up to capture the car market again. The car witnessed a slow ride after the launch of its own sibling ‘Hyundai i10’ which has grasped the market with its performance, style, and reliability.

Though the car is outshined by Hyundai i10 for some duration, it received very good sales last year with overall sales number of 2.3 Lakh units. The company is also expecting same sales figure this year.

Interestingly, in December when ‘i10’ was available with discount scheme, Santro too reported impressive sales. Hyundai car dealers revealed that though the ‘i10’ is more in demand due to its stylish look and superior Kappa engine, the Santro is also liked by many customers because of its spacious interior and better fuel efficiency.

Santro occupied number one position for being most dependable and reliable compact car in the Vehicle Dependability Study conducted by J.D. Power Asia Pacific in 2008 which also reflects its prominence in the market.

India’s family car Santro is also available in CNG and LPG versions which add a reason for its popularity among buyers. Sales figure of 7,500-8,000 units a month in 2008 against about 10,000 units of the i10 also supports the fact that Santro is still alive in the mind of car buyers’ despite the presence of modern and technologically advanced new cars.

In the present scenario, older car models are proving their real worth during the worst ever slowdown in the car market.

Among a long list of popular Indian cars, Santro, Indica and Accent are believed to be real time winners. Despite of the fact that the new generation siblings are introduced in the market, these old models are contributing a good percentage of car sales in the market.

Hyundai Santro, a car ranked top by J.D Power Asia, has been a great time success even though the next generation hatchback Hyundai i10 is already in the market. It is one of the hot time favourite in compact car segment.

Along with Santro, the old Toyota Corolla and Honda City have also been successful in overcoming the sluggish car market. All these cars not only have successfully held their position but have also generated incremental numbers in Motown.

To bank on more numbers in the Indian car industry, car manufacturers are fighting hard to design and manufacture advanced and high-end cars. Some of the launches are siblings of the old car models and some are completely new for the market.

Inspite of the fact that many new cars are rolling out on Indian roads older car models have coup the nightmare.
