Now when most of the supercar manufacturers are busy showing off their hybrid concepts at the Geneva Motor Show, Ferrari stepped forward and did what was long overdue.

Ferrari unveiled its new experimental vehicle based on the 599 GTB Fiorano, which is equipped with an advanced new hybrid powertrain. Christened as HY-KERS, the hybrid two-seater uses modified version of Ferrari's Formula One Kinetic Energy Recovery System (KERS) to recover the braking and decelerating energy in a state-of-the-art lithium-ion battery.

With an electric motor that assists the 6.0-litre V12, the hybrid KERS system provides instantaneous torque for enhanced performance and efficiency. The HY-KERS also features a dual-clutch transmission, the first time when such a gearbox has been combined to a V12-engine car.

The HY-KERS has been designed in such a way that its handling, chassis dynamics, braking abilities and performance remain unaffected by the added weight and complexity of the hybrid powertrain. While driving in the city, the car’s HY-KERS system can also function as a full-electric drivetrain, which reduces fuel consumption and emissions.

The tri-phase, high-voltage electric motor of the HY-KERS, which weighs about 40KG, is coupled to the car’s dual-clutch seven-speed F1 transmission. When braking, the electric drive unit acts as a generator, using the kinetic energy from the negative torque generated to recharge the batteries.

HY-KERS hybrid maintains the high-performance characteristics typical of all Ferraris while, at the same time, reducing CO2 emissions on the ECE + EUDC combined cycle by 35 per cent.

So here comes a 'green' one from the house of Ferrari which is world famous for its raging 'red' supercars. Never have we witnessed a green car revolution like this before from the supercar manufacturers. Other auto manufacturers who showcased their hybrid concept cars at the Geneva Motor Show are Porsche, Mini, Nissan, and Mercedes-Benz.

2011 Hyundai Sonata HybridAs people become more comfortable with the hybrid technology, global manufacturers are rushing to get it right and launch their hybrid cars. Recently Toyota launched its hybrid car, Prius, in India.

While the rest of the auto manufacturers were sweating it out with their hybrid car competition, Hyundai maintained a low profile. But now seems to be the right time for the Korean car manufacturer to join the race. Hyundai is all set to unveil its new Sonata hybrid during the upcoming New York Auto Show which is scheduled in April. Soon after this Hyundai hopes to launch its own plug-in hybrid some time in 2013.

The hybrid Sonata is equipped with a 2.4-liter engine mated to a six-speed automatic transmission coupled with a 30kW electric motor and a 1.4kWh battery pack. The battery pack will use lithium-polymer batteries rather than the NiMH batteries used by the other hybrids in its class. The polymer batteries are said to be more durable and cheaper to manufacture.

The Sonata hybrid will run on a parallel hybrid system. An electric motor and gas-burning engine will work in concert to increase fuel economy. It will be the first mass-produced vehicle to feature a lithium-ion battery under its hood.

Indian customers have still not warmed up to the concept of hybrid cars. One among the many reasons is that they are really expensive and so far the government has not done anything to bring relaxation on import duties.

Honda cars have a fan following in India but still when Honda launched its hybrid Civic in India in June 2008; it could not manage to get a warm response, mainly because of the price factor. But still, after the launch of Toyota Prius in India which is priced at around Rs 26.5 lakh and onward will give a tough competition to Hyundai’s hybrid Sonata when it is launched in India.

No words have been spilled on the pricing of the hybrid Sonata, but considering the technology, we can assume that it will cost much more than the petrol engine variant Sonata which are priced at Rs.13,84,841 and onwards in India.

It is just unimaginable how things have changed around us in a matter of a decade or less. Let’s speak here on the advent of the Electric vehicles in the Indian context. The concept for Electric Vehicles was impossible about a couple of years ago. The scene in India changed after Maini Reva, the first Indian electric car maker put up a bold face and entered the Indian market. Yes, the going was certainly tough for Reva initially, thanks to the overly priced car which was limited only to the city use. It seemed highly impractical when the car was first launched in India.

But those were the days and now these are the days. Times do change. Reva surely set up as a pioneer in safeguarding the environment with its non-polluter electric cars. Picking up the cues, even bigger and environment-conscious car makers also joined the fray in a big way after the great recession of 08-09. This was a decisive moment as the mindset of billions of people suddenly started changing in the wake of Copenhagen summit.

India almost suddenly became a hot spot for the car manufactures to try out their new electric wares and cars that spat less smoke. This year’s Auto Expo certainly will be serving as a launch pad for more and more electric vehicles to hit India. This could prove a hit provided the practicality issues are sorted out soon.

At the Auto Expo, almost all the car manufactures are showcasing their electric car portfolio. Staring from General Motors’s EV’s, Electric vehicles like that of Honda EV-N, Renault Twizy ZE and Toyota’s Prius Hybrid will be showcased. Toyota has been making this hybrid since 1997 but India will see the third generation version of Prius on the roads pretty soon which will have a 1.5 litre petrol engine mated with an electric motor and will give around 20 kilometres a litre.

GM will have the concept Chevy Volt and the Chevy Spark Electric prototype at the show. The Chevy Spark Electric will have the same look at the petrol version but the engine will be replaced by an electric motor. The electric power train will be sourced from REVA.It must be recalled that GM and Reva Electric had signed an agreement recently to develop electric cars for the Indian market. The car is expected to debut commercially this year. The Chevrolet Volt is an electric vehicle with extended-range capability. It is said to be designed to drive up to 40 miles on electricity without using gasoline or producing tail-pipe emissions.

Tata Motors in the meanwhile is not lagging behind and we are anticipating that Tata showcases an electric/hybrid version of its Nano and also an electric version of its Indica, which has been in development in Norway. Tata had bought Norway-based electric vehicle maker Miljo Grenland/Innovasjon in 2008.

The Norwegian firm will manufacture super polymer lithium ion batteries and electric vehicles based on Tata Motors’ range of products as well as conduct research and development in allied technologies. Tata Motors will soon roll out its Rs 160 crore electric car project in Norway and later scale it up for other Scandinavian markets. The Indica Vista EV has been designed and developed by Tata Motors' UK subsidiary, Tata Motors European Technical Centre.

India’s largest car maker Maruti Suzuki is displaying its hybrid Maruti SX4 sedan amongst other concept cars at the Auto Expo 2010. The company is working on clean fuel technologies as part of a public-private partnership ahead of the Commonwealth Games, 2010.

Reva, which is India’s first electric car, showed off its NXR and NXG range of small EVs at the Frankfurt Auto Show last year. Though these cars will not be showcased at the Auto Expo, the India launch is expected soon.

Hyundai too has joined the EV bandwagon and will be showcasing an i10 EV at the Auto Expo. The launch though will be at a later date.

Mahindra is not falling behind of the schedule and has a couple of EVs which is all set to be unveiled at the show.

Let’s hope that the Indian public gives thumbs up for electric vehicles and hybrids in this Auto Expo 2010.

Hybrid Cars soon to hit IndiaThe high price of the environmental-friendly cars won’t stop you from buying one anymore.

Yes, you will not be worried any more about the cost of the environmental friendly cars. But you will soon decide to buy them at any cost as the cost of environmental-friendly cars in India henceforth will be very low. And this is real good news to rejoice for those who wants to buy an environmental-friendly cars in India.

The Indian government is finally considering the wishes of the Indian car makers and car lovers, and they want to reduce the import duty on hybrid vehicles so that global automakers can introduce vehicles running on alternative fuels and power train technologies in India.

A proposal would be soon presented to the Finance Ministry by Mr. Vilasrao Deshmukh, Minister for Heavy Industries and Public Enterprises. And this suggestion would be about how it should be done and by how much. It is really interesting to see how the government is also now aware of the need of eco-friendly vehicles.

The high import duty of the country has restricted the auto makers introduce more cars. But now there is going to be a new way out and more and more cars will be introduced in India. And it is time for that eco-conscious bunch of people to rejoice. The Indian car industry has been waiting for reduction of duties for environment-friendly vehicles.

Toyota’s Prius which runs mainly on an electric engine supplemented by a petrol engine is one such car that is expected to be launched soon. Other hybrid cars in overseas include Honda Insight, Civic Hybrid, Ford’s Fusion Hybrid, and the Chevrolet Volt.

This is a good piece of information for us and especially for the environmentalists. We see a bright future for hybrid cars in India.

The first reason is hybrid cars are going to cost less! Isn’t that great?

The Indian Government on Monday announced a proposed lower the import duty on car. Moreover, the Indian Government wants to encourage the use of environment-friendly vehicles and thus should lower import duty. Therefore, the prices of hybrid cars will certainly come down.

The Minister for Heavy Industries and Public Enterprises, Mr. Vilasrao Deshmukh, said that he has to convey this to the finance ministry. Hence, things like ‘how it should be done and how much’ are still on the process. The Minister feels that some concession is needed to be offered on hybrid models to encourage the adoption of eco-friendly vehicles.

At present, full hybrid technology is offered only by foreign automakers, but many of them are reluctant to bring in their vehicles as over 100 per cent import duty makes their prices prohibitive and difficult for a mass-scale adoption. We can cite Honda’s bad experience which had launched a hybrid version of its Civic sedan in India with near-double cost of the car (against a regular India-made petrol model). Honda suffered a poor demand for the hybrid version and this compelled the company to give a discount of as much as Rs 8 Lakh to clear the stocks.

Moreover, the Ministry of Environment and Forests announced to revise national ambient air quality standards. The revision came after 15 years and is in line with the latest advancement in technology and research and is at par with global best practices.

Although the standards are tighter now there is still an urgent need for controlling the increasing numbers and dieselization of car fleets. Diesel vehicles are known to be bigger polluters as they emit higher smoke, particles and Nitrogen Oxide (NOx).

In Delhi over 1000 new cars or personal vehicles hit the road every day. According to Society for Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM, market share of diesel cars is expected to be 50 percent of total car sales by 2010.

At this point, we can say that hybrid cars are coming to the rescue of the environment with their zero emission technology to keep the planet greener.Furthermore, all cars will carry fuel efficiency tags from 2011. This is another good news for the GenX who have a sense of duty towards Mother Earth.

The government has finally given the final touches to a notification setting fuel efficiency standards for the automobile sector. The norms will come into force in 2011 and the energy efficiency tags will be certified by the Bureau of Energy Efficiency.

At present, automakers voluntarily disclose fuel efficiency at the point of purchase, but the disclosure is optional. Once the notification is in place, revealing efficiency details will become mandatory.

All these steps taken by the Indian Government show a green light to hybrid cars coming to India!

The latest fad in the automotive world is green cars. These green cars are either the hybrid cars or the electric cars. The Frankfurt Motor Show was the centre of attraction for automobile fans who support the 'green cause'. Many car makers showcased their eco-friendly cars in an attempt to save the Earth.

But how environmental friendly are these cars?

You will be surprised to know the latest findings on electric cars. A new report by the European lobby group Transport & Environment says that electric cars could increase carbon emissions, could "speed climate change" and may not reduce oil dependency.

This is quite shocking, right?

The Transport & Environment lobby says that though electric and plug-in hybrid cars can help reduce CO2 emissions and oil consumption, but they do not play any role to solve the climate change problem.

Electric cars do not produce tailpipe emissions, but they are only as clean as their electricity supply. If the electricity used is derived from coal, then these electric cars cannot be termed as clean, eco-friendly cars.

Moreover, the electricity supply will have to be cleaned up by adding renewables to the power grid and the cars "must be more energy-efficient than state-of-the-art conventional vehicles on a 'tank to wheel' basis" in order to realize significant environmental benefits.

It is a trend that is seen not only among the car makers, but it is now seen in almost all of the economic and business sectors. If you are a car savvy, then there is little chance that you do not know about the eco-friendly innovations in the motor world. And to know about the current likings of the customers, you would need to just glance through the ongoing motor show, the Tokyo Motor Show.

But it also appears to be that the electric cars are winning over the hybrid cars. And the reason is very clear. The electric cars manifest the eco-friendly movement much better than the hybrid cars and so the car world is now more inclined towards them. And it is very much evident in the Tokyo Motor Show that began yesterday.

There is a great love for the super-skinny electric car from Nissan and the Toyota electric concept car FT-EV II. The electric car Leaf from Nissan will be displayed for the first time at this show, the car will be launched in 2010.

The high significance for electric cars is because of that the hybrid cars are heavier, much complicated than an electric car and runs on petrol. And it is no wonder that the zero emission electric cars with rechargeable batteries will in no time march towards the number one position pushing the hybrid cars behind.

It doesn’t mean that the hybrid cars are not inviting any attention. The Honda CR-Z concept car debuts at the show and the crowd seems to have got completely enchanted at this sportier second version of CR-Z. It is truly a delightful sight to see how the car world is evolving.

Toyota PriusToyota Kirloskar Motors (TKM) has secured its hold in the Indian car market. The Fortuner proved to be fortunate for the Japanese car maker. Now Toyota has more to offer to India. The world’s number one car maker will not stop with just offering petrol and diesel powered variants in the country.

Toyota is planning to bring in the fuel efficient Prius to India. This hybrid car is presently the most fuel economic car of the world.
As a result, Toyota is busy these days conducting feasibility studies for its hybrid car Prius in India.

In fact, the Toyota Prius was unveiled to the general public at the 18th International Engineering and Technology Fair (IETF) in Bangalore in year. The aim of this display was to assess the mass reaction.

Toyota Motors might decide to bring the Prius in Complete Built Unit (CBU) to India. But this could prove to be very costly. Moreover, the Indian government does not offer any duty slashes for imported hybrid vehicles.

Toyota must have noticed that the Honda Civic Hybridhad no customers when its price tag was around Rs. 20-25 Lakh. When the price was brought down by 8 lakh rupees, the consignment was sold in just a matter of days.

That leaves Toyota with just one feasible option – Completely Knocked Down (CKD) kits.

The Prius has to be priced competitively to attract customers in India.

Pulling itself slowly out of the economic slowdown and its after effects, the American market has a new American dream. In fact they are thinking along the safest way for a better tomorrow.

According to a recent survey conducted in America, American car buyers, in a shift in thought, have plans for a greener tomorrow. It seems that they do not want to make yet another mistake about for which they will regret sometime in the future.

It is of course planning well for a better tomorrow and the car buyers are just reflecting the trend of the days by choosing to buy hybrid cars. Yes, Hybrid Cars certainly seems to be the mantra of the new era, but what else could be done to bring back the ailing nature?

A car buyer need not sacrifice on anything to buy a hybrid car, very soon, the all-knowing car manufacturers will be bundling the car market with hybrid cars with high tech options. But it is true that the car buyers have to wait a little longer before this happens and so a customer who is looking to buy a car in the next few months or perhaps years if stubborn about a hybrid car should settle for the ones that are available in the market currently.

In India too, the hybrid car market is booming. And the only electric car manufacturer of the country Maini Reva is planning to launch its two new models NXR and NXG. It is possible that Indians will also ape the western car market, but for a good cause this time.

Embracing the hybrid cars there are still many thoughts which lingers in the minds of the car buyer which disturbs them deeply. The disturbing factors of reliability, mileage, and the pricing are just a few of them. But the future of the Hybrid cars seems to be robust and this should be what the car manufacturers should be striving for.

Frankfurt Motor show or the International Motor Show (IAA) held at Frankfurt in September of every year draws car enthusiasts and car manufacturers at the same breath.

This year’s IAA is abuzz with the news of Hybrid and electric vehicles taking centre stage in the show. Every major and minor car manufacturers have lined up a slew of these hybrid and electric cars just for the event to paint the automotive world in the colours of Blue and Green.

Making a world debut in the 'Blue Drive Zone' is the Hyundai ix-Metro, a new crossover hybrid with CO2 emissions of just 80g/km. The ix-Metro is powered by an inline three-cylinder petrol engine displacing just one-litre. Direct injection, dual CVVT and turbo-charging are all combined with a six-speed dual clutch transmission to make for a highly potent compact package.

Hyundai will also be unveiling the HND-4 'Blue-Will' plug-in hybrid, which promises 40 miles of all-electric range with its parallel hybrid architecture which combines a 1.6-liter four-cylinder gas engine with direct-injection technology to charge a set of lithium-polymer batteries, which in turn provides power to an electric motor to drive the front wheels.

Kia is also showing their latest hybrid offering. Among the models unveiled will be the 2010 Sorento diesel hybrid - powered by a twin-turbocharged 1.6-liter four-cylinder diesel engine mated to an electric motor to provide 161 horsepower. The all-new five- or seven-seater Kia Sorento SUV is longer and lower, with sleeker styling and better aerodynamics.

Kia will also debut a mild-hybrid version of the Kia Cee'd hybrid – the company's top-selling model in Europe. The vehicle will pair a 1.6-liter four cylinder gas engine running to a hybrid power-train.

While no stranger to hybrid technology, Toyota will be showcasing three new hybrids at the Frankfurt Show including the Lexus LF-Ch, a 5-door hatch back with Hybrid Synergy Drive technology. Few details have been released on this model but more information is expected at the Show. Also from Toyota is the Toyota Auris Hybrid already proven popular in Europe with 400,000 units sold since its launch in 2007.

Not to be left out, given its iconic hybrid status, the Toyota Prius Plug-in Hybrid Concept will also be making an appearance in advance of its fleet testing scheduled for early 2010.

Indian electric car manufacturers REVA are ready to launch two new fully electric models the REVA NXG a 4-seat family hatch-back and the REVA NXR, a sporty 2-seater. The 4-seat NXR hatch back will run on Lithium ion batteries that can attain a maximum speed of 104kmph and covers a range of 160 kms when fully charged.

Hyundai will also be unveiling the Hyundai i10 Electric, a production-ready zero emissions vehicle. Powered by a 49kW motor and a 16kWh battery, the i10 Electric promises a driving range of 100 miles and top speed of over 80 mph.

The mass of hybrids and electric vehicles due to be unveiled at Frankfurt clearly conveys the current mind-set of the auto-industry, with a strong emphasis on lower emissions. Even Porsche are jumping on the green bandwagon with the announcement of a hybrid version of the Cayenne due in 2010.

We just can’t wait to see the 63rd International Motor Show (IAA) unravel itself on 17th and will run until the 27th of September in Frankfurt.

For Hyundai Motors, it seems like filling the void. The void of entry into electric cars segment. We have of late seen or heard most of the car makers, if not all, join the electric car manufacturing band wagon. Hyundai it looks as if, a strong believer in the adage ‘Make hay while sunshine’.

Hyundai Korea has just done the much speculated thing. After a quick heart transplant in its existing and popular small car i10, the guys in Hyundai have brought out the new Electric Vehicle (EV). This creation will most certainly star in the Frankfurt Motor Show later this month. We hear that the guys in Hyundai Motors have been slogging day in and day out on this project.

Hyundai i10, a small car and a hatch back will be positioned as an example of electric urban or city vehicle. It is said that the Hyundai i10 EV comes with a 66 bhp electric motor powered by a 16 kwh lithium-ion battery. The battery cells are provided by LG Chem. Driving range is 145 kilometers and top speed is 133 kph. 0 to 60 time is a rather leisurely 15 seconds. Hyundai also has added an intrinsic liquid thermal management system in the battery which makes the car charge upto 85 per cent in 15-minutes flat at 413 V. How cool is that?

But Hyundai has borrowed a leaf from GM Volt’s story and is leasing a low volume fleet in Korea in 2010 to understand the psyche of the people and probably would go into global production in 2012. Hyundai says that the battery cost would be above the sky limit for anybody to own at the moment forcing Hyundai will offer these vehicles as lease-only for the foreseeable future. In fact, the price of the pack is greater than the cost of an entire conventional gas-powered i10.

Now for the price update you’ll have been eagerly looking in this blog for. Ladies and Gentlemen, Hyundai i10 EV’s 16 kwh battery pack itself costs, Hold our breath, 10,000 euro. Ok, allow us to translate this complicated currency with our own. It roughly could read something like Rs. 7,00,000. Alright that might sound affordable to you, but we are being polite in reminding you it is just the cost of the battery pack and the whole car could actually cost a bomb.

But since, Hyundai has had at least the courtesy of admitting the battery pack cost of their Electric Vehicle, we also think that GM Volt’s battery cost also should be hovering around in that price range since they also use the same supplier ‘s cells and also have the intrinsic temperature management system.

Ah Guys, We also would like to add something else before we forget. This car though a hybrid in itself, the energy consumption is awesome. Hyundai i10 returns with a mind-blowing mileage of 7.8 miles per kwh. The Volt achieves 5 miles per kwh. Way to go Hyundai. It seems like Koreans can teach a lesson or two in conserving that precious energy.

For us Indians, we should be glad that we have Hyundai’s i10 doing rounds here in India. So we know that it surely would be in Indian shores sometime soon after the global production of the EV kicks off. We also are staunch believers in the adage ‘Better late than never’.

Suzuki Motor Corporation seems to very busy days. The reason behind this is that the Japanese car maker is developing a hybrid version of the newly-launched Kizashi.

The Suzuki Kizashi made its first global public debut on 30th July’09 in the U.S. The mid-size sedan is available with a 2.4-Liter 4-cylinder engine with a 6-speed manual transmission and front-wheel-drive as a standard feature. The sedan also has an option of automatic transmission and all-wheel-drive.

The Suzuki Kizashi can be best described as a sedan that can offer “Japanese quality with European flair.”

The more fuel efficient hybrid version of the Kizashi is added to the lineup in the future. This is an earnest move of the world’s ninth largest car maker to compete with the Koreans in the car market with an entry-level hybrid sedan.

Right now we have no news about the hybrid technology involved in the new version of the Kizashi, but we promise you to keep you in the loop with more news about this car.
The 2010 Suzuki Kizashi sedan will be available in the showrooms by Christmas in the U.S.

This handsome sedan will come on the Indian stage by 2010 and is believed to be priced at around Rs.10 Lakhs. The hybrid Kizashi sedan should be introduced in two years.

BMW ActiveHybrid X6
The 2010 BMW ActiveHybrid X6 is bundled with technologies. Read on to unfold the features of the new, technology driven car that has it all to boost the future outlook on cars.

The difference between the conventional BMW X6 and the ActiveHybrid X6 is that the ActiveHybrid car will have the twin advantage of the X6 concept and two-mode hybrid version. The new BMW drivetrain integrates power inventor, batteries and electronic system into the transmission.

Being already familiar with the ActiveHybrid X7, it is time to get used to the new member in the family, ActiveHybrid X6. The production of the car has already begun and it will be showcased in the coming month at the Frankfurt Motor Show alongside the ActiveHybrid X7.

BMW was rendered help from General Motors and Daimler Chrysler that co-developed the two-mode hybrid system. The transmission of this hybrid system is based on the ECVT electrical continuously variable transmission and the two modes, one for low and the other for high speeds also has fixed transmission ratio.

Apart from the technicalities, the ActiveHybrid X6 can be distinguished from the regular X6 as light blue paint scheme, unique badging and the 21” wheels gives it a different and distinct face.

The Active Hybrid X6 holds the credit of the world's first Sports Activity Coupe which offers a full hybrid drive. A nickel-metal hydrid (NiMH) battery pack provides energy for the electric motors of ActiveHybrid X6. While in the electricity only mode, the ActiveHybrid X6 can run up to a speed of 60km/h.

All of this with an improved fuel efficiency of upto 20% compared to the other non-hybrid cars.

Toyota Yaris has often proved its worth to Toyota as a successful compact car. Yaris is available in three variants viz. a three-door hatchback, a five- door hatchback and the sedan. Now, Toyota is considering rolling out a hybrid version of the Yaris compact car, the Yaris Hybrid.

It is revealed that Toyota is likely to use the current engine and platform offered on the Yaris. The Yaris Hybrid will feature a more cost competitive and fuel-efficient hybrid system than that of the Toyota Prius, which topped the fuel economy cars list this year.

The Japanese car giant Toyota Motor Corporation seems to be busy with the introduction of new models of hybrid cars. We have witnessed the launch of the hybrid Camry and Corolla Hybrid in Thailand.

The Toyota Yaris Hybrid is perceived as the best suitable small car from Toyota’s mill. The Yaris will undergo a small change in order to be a hybrid car. The small alteration is the addition of the hybrid system to the existing fuel powered Yaris. The new hybrid will run on either gas or battery. A plug in version of the Toyota Yaris is also anticipated.

The Yaris Hybrid will be unleashed in the Japanese market in 2011 and subsequently the rest of the world will welcome the hybrid car.

The conventional Toyota Yaris in the forms of small car and sedan will be available in India very soon.

The Honda Insight and Toyota Prius come from different car manufacturers all together, but they still come from the same country and that probably is the single matching gene in their design DNA.

They are so much identical in design but Honda probably felt a little offended on this allegation made by design critics and is now in a strict denial mode. Honda says that the design of Honda Insight is much of an accidental design and the Insight looking more like Toyota Prius is just coincidence.

Though the blame of copying the Prius design for Honda’s Insight weighs heavy on Honda, both the cars were introduced along the same time, early this year. And Toyota Prius, in particular, is doing a good job, selling more units than the Honda Insight. The Toyota Prius has been the topper in its category in the sales chart in Japan for the past three months. Honda Insight is not far behind, but there is a considerable difference in the numbers.

Honda Insight had its presence in the car market from 1999 to 2006, but it is the revamped Insight, which is first car to be built based on the Integrated Motor Assist.

Both Insight and Prius are hybrid cars and have been performing well in the market. There are more and more car lovers opting for these eco-friendly cars, which switch between an electric motor and a gas engine, for the concern of a pollution free tomorrow.

Both the companies make dynamic cars but uses different technology and designing techniques. The Honda has a completely different designing approach from Toyota called the “design DNA.” But these dissimilarities apart the onlookers feel both the car look alike.

New Bentley Continental GT Cars in India

Bentley, after the fiftieth birthday celebration of its legendary 6.75-liter V-8, is all charged up to roll out its first car ever to run on bio-fuel. Bentley calls it the Continental Supersports, which will mark the first phase in an initiative planned to spread technology across its entire lineup by 2012.

Bentley’s aim is to reduce carbon emissions of its overall fleet by 15 percent and its advanced powertrain technology will help cut fuel usage by up to 40 per.

The Continental Supersports will mark the use of the first FlexFuel technology in a Bentley car to which the company believes that bioethanol fuels will become a sustainable and ethical alternative to fossil fuels in the future. From well to wheel, the Continental Supersports offers a net reduction of harmful CO2 emissions by 70 percent.

The German car honcho has termed its new Continental Supersports coupe as the company’s “fastest, most powerful car ever.” The Green car will come with a twin-turbocharged 6.0-liter W12 engine that puts out 621 bhp and can reach a top speed of 328.3 kmph.

The new Bentley Continental coupe will look like the “regular” Continental GT, but the Supersports Continental will get a new fascia, some funky wheels and a first-class interior. Bentley gave the Continental Supersports vertical vents for improved air flow to the superchargers’ intercoolers. The vents on the bonnet also help with air flow by removing hot air from the W12’s engine bay. The car will flaunt smoked headlamps that impart an aggressive look.

The uniquely shaped oval exhaust outlets and smoked taillight lenses further accentuate the look of the coupe. The 8 mm deck lid spoiler gives a sportier look and added stability at high speeds. Bentley tries to emphasize the importance of its Continental Supersports by offering the car in exclusive new color and materials never before seen on a Bentley.

The Continental Supersports will be displayed at the Geneva Motor Show in August and will be available in the showrooms by October.

Hyundai, the Korean car giant has been on the headlines of late. Hyundai Motors has hit the jackpot again by unveiling its first hybrid car in its domestic market of South Korea. Christened as the Elantra LPI, this hybrid will use liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) and a set of lithium-ion polymer batteries.

The Elantra LPI will run 17.8 Km/L of LPG and will emit an amazing 99 grams of carbon dioxide per kilometer. Hyundai announced that the set of lithium-ion polymer batteries weigh 35% less than current nickel-metal hydride cells used in the Toyota’s Prius, and the Honda’s Insight.

Moreover, these batteries are 40% smaller and are likely to last 1.5 times longer than nickel-metal hydride batteries. These batteries generate less heat and are more resilient to shock than other types of lithium-ion batteries. The batteries don't have to conform to a set shape as the polymer resembles a gel. This is Hyundai’s solution to the bulkiness of batteries on hybrids, which has been a concern for years.

Hyundai joining the hybrid party with the Elantra LPI, is a stepping stone for world’s fifth carmaker. The launching of Hyundai’s hybrid coincides with new hybrids from Honda and Toyota.

The first hybrid electric model, largely based on the existing Elantra, makes Hyundai the first carmaker on the planet to offer lithium-ion polymer batteries commercially.

Hyundai has received strong interest for the new hybrid car from Australia, India, Italy and France, which have liquefied-petroleum-gas infrastructures.

New Porsche Cayenne Cars in India
Ok everybody, green is in. Now we didn’t vouch on that. It is being endorsed by the big guys. You see! And when it is Porsche who is endorsing green, we better sit back and believe it.

Porsche, The celebrated sports car maker has bit the newest green car fad. It seems like being fuel guzzlers is not a matter of pride anymore. Ferrari has already announced that it will be bringing a hybrid sports car. A similar announcement has been made by Lamborghini too. So how could Porsche, another European sports car manufacturer be left behind in the race for green technology?

Porsche has announced that it is working on launching a hybrid variant for its best selling SUV Cayenne. Did you hear that? A green Cayenne on its way to put a sock in the rattling mouths of the eco workers. The launch is expected to happen next year. At the same time, the newly launched four seater sedan Panamera too will be getting a hybrid sibling in the near future. As per the industry grapevine, Porsche is planning to develop a new engine that will deliver a fuel economy of 11 km/l on the Cayenne. This is an advancement of 25 percent of the current fuel efficiency of 6 km/l in city and 8.9 km/l on the highway.

Since it has a reputation to maintain, Porsche engineers are working on a hybrid system that is better than what the world has seen so far. So far the biggest market for hybrid cars has been contained to United States, Europe and Japan. Other countries have a lot of catching up to do in terms of developing green technologies which will pave way for co-existence of environment and modern engineering.

Porsche Cayenne is already available in India as an imported model. It is available in five variants in India including sporty GTS and Turbo versions. It is available with a price tag of Rs 56 lakh upwards in the country. If India is to get the hybrid model it has wait for some more time. (Tell us something new eh!)

As the country has always been received technologies long time after the world has tested it. There are a few exceptions to it. Hybrids have never been received with open arms by the Indian consumers as they have other options to like the CNG and LPG variants. It will take some aggressive marketing to push the Porsche hybrid Cayenne in the Indian car market.

The Mahindra Scorpio ‘mighty muscular’ hides a lot of surprises under its canopy. One of these is the Micro Hybrid technology that works in conjunction with its mHawk engine to make the SUV more environment-friendly. Mahindra has gone to great lengths to promote this new technology as a champion of environmental conservation by burning less fuel and producing lesser emissions.

The Micro Hybrid setup is an advanced and path breaking technology. As the term “hybrid” denotes, though the Mahindra Scorpio is not exactly a hybrid, the SUV is capable of switching into standby mode at certain intervals during running to burn less fuel. The co-relation to Hybrid technology is that Hybrid engines switch between two different types of fuels or modes of operation to achieve better utilization of primary fuel.

Mahindra’s Micro Hybrid technology intelligently switches the Scorpio’s engine into idle mode when not required so that fuel can be conserved. It restarts the engine when the clutch pedal is stepped on or gear is engaged back from neutral. The revolutionary technology is ideal for heavy city traffic conditions. Mahindra is confident that this novel technology saves around 5% of fuel.

Lately, Mahindra has been focusing increasingly on Greener Concepts such as Bio-Diesel and Hybrid-electric technologies and has been conducting various types of research on cost-effective hybrid cars. With the new Mahindra Scorpio with Micro Hybrid technology, it has achieved compliance with the latest Bharat Stage IV emission norms in the country. Micro Hybrid is just the start of Mahindra’s “hybrid dreams” and the Scorpio is a step towards Mahindra’s adding its own hybrid cars on Indian roads.

It was only recently that we had blogged on an ultra cheap car Pico that was developed by engineering students at M S Ramaiah Institute of Technology in Bangalore. This time, it’s students from Sapathagiri College of Engineering in Bangalore who have created a hybrid car as a part of their final year academic project.

This set of creative heads has put together an automotive wonder that is a special type of hybrid car as it runs on two engines. The car is powered by an old Sipani Montana 850cc engine that has been modified to deliver extremely low fuel consumption. Besides this, the car runs on LPG as well as petrol.

Creating this hybrid marvel was not an easy job for this as there were no available sponsors and every penny required was put in by them on their own. Car parts were sourced from garages across the city and this was the easy part. It took them a while to obtain the engines for the car.

The group is looking forward to seeing their pet project being produced commercially but currently it has to undergo a few more changes to come out as a complete car. This is a good example of how young auto engineers are coming up with new and innovative concepts that have the potential to revolutionize the current global car manufacturing scene.

‘Going green’ is the new mantra in car industry amidst rising environmental pollution and fuel prices. Many car manufacturers are joining the ‘green revolution’ to attract environment conscious car buyers.

India’s car giant Maruti Suzuki is planning to launch electric cars and compressed natural gas (CNG) variants of its three or four car models. The CNG variants of its car models is likely to arrive by 2010 or 201.

Currently, the company is studying the possibility of the electric cars and developing the technology for India. In a venture with U.S. based General Motors, Suzuki has already developed a fuel cell technology which is presently being tested in the Hybrid SX4 in Japan. The engine is offered with a mixture of fuel cell and high-pressure hydrogen.

Besides this, the company has also tested the hybrid technology on WagonR for the Japanese market. Whether the hybrid version of WagonR will be seen on the Indian roads is still unknown. The company has already launched the LPG (liquefied petroleum gas) variants of the Maruti 800 and Wagon R.

Hyundai charges in with its innovative plug-in hybrid concept cars eyeing the increasing demand of fuel-efficient and zero emission vehicles. One such eco-engineered concept is ‘Blue-Will’ which is composed of bio-degradable materials that are light on environment.

The imaginations and expertise of Hyundai’s designers and engineers have transcended all boundaries of design, quality, materials, and technology. And this is clearly reflected from the usage of recycled PET soft drink bottles, bio-plastics, and plans extracts in the car designing.

You will be amazed to know that Hyundai has used recycled PET soft drink bottles to make headlamp bezels, bio-plastics to make other adornments, and materials made from plant extracts to make the interior as well as the engine area eco-friendly.

Another aspect of the car that radiates elegance and fuel senses is the design flexibility of the Blue-Will found on the panoramic roof. This roof is integrated with solar panel cells that transform solar energy to electric energy and is further used to generate power for the batteries.

Now the question arises what will drive this bio-degradable car? Gladly, even the engine is eco-friendly with an all-aluminum gasoline direct injected 1.6-litre and a 100kw electric motor.

Hyundai’s Blue-Will is a complete eco-friendly concept that meets every expectation of a car buyer. The new plug-in hybrid concept is amazing and authentic as any other Hyundai car.

New Honda Civic Hybrid Cars in India

All those who are planning to buy the Honda Civic Hybrid will have to experience a longer waiting period as Honda has decided to hide the car beyond showrooms. It may sound shocking to many but this is the fact that the car will now be available only as a direct import through the company.

Now customers have to place an order directly to the company if they desire to buy the car and have to wait for 3-4 months to actually drive home the Honda Civic Hybrid.

Honda Civic Hybrid being India's first hybrid car has created a big bang in the industry at the time of its launch in June 2008. The car runs on both petrol and battery giving a fuel economy of 21 km/L. Though the car gets the fame and attention for being first of its kind in the Indian car industry it fails to achieve good sales until an amazing discount of Rs 8 Lakh was announced. The reason behind this is the attached heavy price tag of Rs 21.5 Lakh with the car including a 104% import duty. Moreover, it did not receive any government’s support.

Very few people around the country were eager to pay such a high price and out of 300 cars only 65 were sold off in five months. But after the car price was slashed, the remaining pilled stock was cleared in just 10 days reflecting the actual cause of its unsuccessful ride on the Indian roads.

Experiencing all these Honda has now decided to stop retailing its hybrid car through its dealerships. Well, this may depress few of the prospective Civic Hybrid buyers but not much as they can still own the car with a few days of waiting period.

Scarcity of fossil fuels has left the car industry in grief. At the time when the global recession is mocking at the troubling economy, the issue of fuel deficiency around the globe is alarming the car industry of future cyclone.

The fuel prices are fluctuating now and then. No one knows when the economy will get stable and so are the fuel prices. Once it regains its normal stage, the prices would definitely go high with extra burden on pockets.

As a solution to this, many car manufacturers are rolling out cars that run on fuel other than conventional petrol or diesel. Manufacturer’s concern over fuel depletion has given birth to many new technologies that support the use of alternative fuels. To overcome the future trouble, the auto industry has invented alternatives like the LPG (liquefied petroleum gas), CNG (compressed natural gas), hybrid cars, electric cars, bio-fuel (ethanol, bio-diesel), hydrogen-and air-powered cars.

Among these, CNG and LPG cars are getting attention due to their low running cost. Also, these cars rejoice Government’s interest as they are light on environment. Therefore to take advantage of these, car manufactures are fast developing and introducing these cars in the car market. Car manufacturers like the Maruti, Tata, and Hyundai have already released CNG and LPG version of their car models.

Now, General Motors is all set to add the LPG version of Chevrolet Spark and the CNG version of Chevrolet Aveo in its car portfolio. Both these cars presently doing good business in the Indian market and the new variants will definitely increase their market share.

General Motors is gradually expanding its network in the country inspite of its troubled position in the home town. With a view to capture more consumers, it has also intelligently ventured into the used car business which has a great potential in the price conscious Indian market.

Since its debut, Tata Nano, is always in the news for its iconic character. The car is yet to be commercially launched and rumours of its different avatars have been echoing for a long time.

Tata has amazed everyone with its innovative technology used in the Nano that has made the car enjoy the tag of world's cheapest car. Again the company has taken a step ahead of other car manufacturers with its plan to introduce a hybrid version of the Nano.

If Tata's plans go well, the Nano could soon be seen with Bosch's micro-hybrid technology which is believed to reduce fuel consumption and emissions by about 5 to 10 percent. The micro-hybrid technology is also known as 'stop-start system' in which the hybrid set up automatically turns off the car’s engine while it's not in use. This little but powerful technology will join diesel and all-electric variants of the Nano.

The cost of Micro hybrid technology will be much lower than the full hybrid system. Though the exact price of the Nano Hybrid is not yet known, it's expected to cost Rs 4,000 to 6,000 more than the parent model.

Toyota was very excited about the launch of its highly successful hybrid car, Toyota Prius Hybrid.

Prius Hybrid is a leading hybrid car across the globe and is adorned with superior technology, lower emission levels and excellent fuel efficiency. This hybrid car if launched would be a tough competitor of Honda’s only hybrid car in India, the outstanding Honda Civic Hybrid.

But, at present, the company has revised its plan to introduce Prius Hybrid in India. The company may have been decided to push back the launch date seeing the recent discount on Honda Civic Hybrid. A hybrid available at Rs 13.6 Lakh can easily beat a hybrid priced at Rs 22 Lakh.

Well, Toyota has made a right move by postponing the launch date. The company is also not satisfied with the infrastructure and duty structure. Now, the wait goes longer for another hybrid car in India.

Hyundai i20
So many cars have rolled out on Indian road this year that it has become difficult to count the numbers. Since the beginning of this year, many cars have been launched. Now, Hyundai is eager to introduce out its small car, the i20.

It is believed that i20 will be an expansion of Hyundai Getz. The company planned to manufacture this car after the great winning success of its recent car model i10. The Getz has not been able to lure customers because of the unsatisfactory looks but i10 has won awards and accolades. The company thereby produces a modification of Getz that would be loaded with classy interiors similar to i10.

Getz in terms of leg space is huge with comfortable seating. Just wonder if the car is expanded what would be the area of leg room and size of the rear seat. With the launch of Hyundai i20, the company has tied high hopes, aspirations and expectations.

Will the hopes get fulfilled? Will i20 succeed in holding the expectations? No one can answer until the car actually makes the public appearance.

Hybrid cars from an Indian manufacturer for US roads! Sound great. Soon after the launch of Honda Civic Hybrid, all leading companies are planning to launch hybrid in India. But Mahindra has high plans to launch a diesel-hybrid variant of its Scorpio SUV for US. The company has high expectations from this variant and is expecting to launch it by 2010 in the US market.

It’s nothing to wonder. The diesel hybrid version will be introduced in US market and manufactured in India. If India is planning to import a car to US then think how fuel efficient the car will be? The US has the toughest emission norms and safety guidelines. India importing cars to America is skeptical. But that’s the truth.

To give a believing view to this fact, the company is investing million of dollars in developing a center 100 miles from Mumbai. The center will be dedicated to the production of diesels, hybrids and diesel hybrids.

Will Mahindra be successful to deliver a safe and reliable diesel-hybrid SUV?

Global warning is at its peak and India is still far away to combat with the situation. Major air pollution is created by automobile exhausts which can be minimized by the use of green cars. Hybrid cars are good alternative for diesel or petrol vehicle. But these cars are seeking government’s attention.

The customs duty and the tax imposed on them are really high. It is the high time for the government to take necessary steps to encourage auto makers for the local production of hybrid cars.

India has only one hybrid car ‘Civic Hybrid’ recently launched by Honda Motors. The number will definitely increase if the government drives some policy in favour of these cars. It can cut down the customs duty on such cars which will encourage the car manufacturer to roll out these cars or permit imports at a lower duty for those auto companies who assure to manufacture hybrid cars for a specified period of time.

Racing and Racing! Where will the road end? Earlier, Indian car manufacturers were racing for the cheapest cars and now speeding for hybrids. After the launch of Honda Civic Hybrid, Tata Motors and Mahindra & Mahindra have also made a high jump on the hybrid bandwagon.

Tata and Mahindra are with head and heart involved in producing exclusive hybrid cars using indigenous technology at a very low tax burden. It is believed that these homegrown hybrids will come at a comparatively low cost price.

Tata Motors is planning to launch a hybrid of petrol and diesel in its flagship model Indica. The improved version of electric technology will be also seen in a range of Indica and Indigo cars. Simultaneously, Mahindra is working on innovative technology of blending electronics, battery, powerdrive and software to produce a completely new range of hybrid cars.

All these cars of Tata and Mahindra are expected to roll out in the next three years – So get ready to wear the green conscience.

Honda Motors has launched its first hybrid car in India. This launch was inspired by the increasing environmental pollution. Honda did not accept diesel for its line up models but have accepted the advanced green technology.

The company has spent a large sum of money on this innovative technology but is the expenditure a worth? Will Honda get the returns? Will Indian buyers go for hybrids? These questions are swaying in and out of people’s minds because ours is a developing country and commercially India is not yet prepared for such high-technology cars.

Running the car on electricity means more power for charging but do we have continuous supply of electricity in the cities. Do we have smooth roads to run the car? Do we have charging facilities at petrol stations? Do we have enough spare parts for these hybrids? Is government ready to relief tax on such cars? The answer to all is No.

Apart from that, the car price is also a concern. With a cost price of Rs 21.5 lakh, only affluent class can afford to buy this car but unfortunately these people are more attracted to class, status and elegance. Nobody can compare the elegance of BMW with Honda Civic sedan, a completely different connotation. The cost price has outraged the advantage of green.

It will take time for all Indians to wear a green conscience.
