2011 Hyundai Sonata HybridWe in Carazoo have covered in an earlier blog that the 2011 Hyundai Sonata is making inroads to India. We had also highlighted that the 2011 Hyundai Sonata would feature petrol engine whilst it is in India. But it seems like Hyundai might offer us the Turbo diesel power plant for the same as well as it was recently launched in the New York Motor Show.
2011 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid

Lets now get to the better part of the facts and figures revolving the Turbo diesel engine that will be used in the 2011 Hyundai Sonata. This 2.0 liter DI turbocharged engine churns out a stupendous 274 bhp at 6,000 rpm and 364 Nm of torque from only 1800 Nm. Hyundai also claims that Sonata will return 9.35 kms per liter in the city and 14.45 liters in the highway.

If the diesel version of Sonata has made you dumbstruck, then you better recover from the shock as Hyundai’s hybrid version of the 2011 Sonata which features a 2.4 liter, 169 bhp 4-cylinder petrol engine and a 40-bhp lithium ion powered electric motor makes an astounding 15.73 kms/Lin the city to 16.58 in the highway.
2011 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid
As per Hyundai, its hybrid hops power delivery to gearbox and instead lets its electric motors to directly power the vehicles wheels, which the Korean automaker believes will let the new Sonata operate at higher speeds on electric power alone. This makes the Sonata Hybrid significantly different from conventional hybrids most of which rely on the gearbox to transit the electric power to the wheels.

In a twist of fate, exactly 110 years after Ferdinand Porsche developed the world’s first car with hybrid drive, a similar visionary drive has been taken up by Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG, Stuttgart to bring out the concept in production-based GT racing.

Come this Geneva Motor Show and Porsche will debut their Porsche 911 GT3 R with innovative hybrid drive, which also opens up a new chapter in the history of Porsche with more than 20,000 wins in 45 years scored by the extremely successful Porsche 911 in racing trim.

The innovative hybrid technology featured in the car has been developed especially for racing, standing out significantly in its configuration and components from conventional hybrid systems. In this case, electrical front axle drive with two electric motors developing 60 kW each supplements the 480-bhp four-litre flat-six at the rear of the 911 GT3 R Hybrid. A further significant point is that instead of the usual batteries in a hybrid road car, an electrical flywheel power generator fitted in the interior next to the driver delivers energy to the electric motors.

The flywheel generator itself is an electric motor with its rotor spinning at speeds of up to 40,000 rpm, storing energy mechanically as rotation energy. The flywheel generator is charged whenever the driver applies the brakes, with the two electric motors reversing their function on the front axle and acting themselves as generators. Then, whenever necessary, that is when accelerating out of a bend or when overtaking, the driver is able to call up extra energy from the charged flywheel generator, the flywheel being slowed down electromagnetically in the generator mode and thus supplying up to 120 kW to the two electric motors at the front from its kinetic energy. This additional power is available to the driver after each charge process for approximately 6 - 8 seconds.

Energy formerly converted – and thus wasted – into heat upon every application of the brakes, is now highly efficiently converted into additional drive power.

Depending on racing conditions, hybrid drive is used in this case not only for extra power, but also to save fuel. This again increases the efficiency and, accordingly, the performance of the 911 GT3 R Hybrid, for example by reducing the weight of the tank or making pitstops less frequent.

After its debut in Geneva the 911 GT3 R Hybrid will be tested in long-distance races on the Nürburgring. The highlight of this test programme will be the 24 Hours on the Nordschleife of Nürburgring on May 15th and 16th. The focus is not on the 911 GT3 R Hybrid winning the race, but rather serving as a spearhead in technology and a “racing laboratory” providing know-how on the subsequent use of hybrid technology in road-going sports cars.

The 911 GT3 R Hybrid is a perfect example of the Porsche Intelligent Performance philosophy, a principle to be found in every Porsche: More power on less fuel, more efficiency and lower CO2 emissions – on the track and on the road.

Ferrari 599 Hybrid technical illustrationThe Italian sports car brand with prancing horse logo, Ferrari is doing what might be the most extreme thing ever. Coming up with a hybrid, Yeah, You read that right. Ferrari is expected to reveal a hybrid version of the 599 GTB during the 2010 Geneva International Motor Show in March.

Coinciding with the same "green" strategic direction as some other notable supercar makers, fans of the Italian marque might not find this news too disappointing or at least not much of a surprise. If this is the case, then a hybrid Ferrari 599 concept would usher in a new era for the sports car manufacturer starting with the first ever prancing horse from Maranello to feature a gas/electric power train that is intended for public use.

The car’s hybrid system will combine a set of highly efficient lithium ion batteries and an electric motor mounted in the rear transaxle. This electrified prop shaft will generate its maximum torque at zero RPM, thus cutting the extremely inefficient around town fuel consumption by up to 35% which may be translated as equivalent to about 17 litres per 100km.

The future Ferrari concept will make the most of what the Scuderia has learned from the F60’s Kinetic Energy Recovery System (KERS ) that was developed throughout the 2009 Formula One season. The KERS-like brake regeneration system, start/ stop technology and electric boost will also be installed.Ferrari 599 Hybrid GTB

A hybrid 4x4 Ferrari technical illustration first appeared a few months ago and was reported to be the real thing. It seems in the absence of a sedan from the prancing horse the more family-oriented V12-powered 599 GTB would be the perfect candidate for a hybrid powertrain.

micro gas turbine Remember we had written a blog pondering if the Jaguar XJ will be first hybrid car to be fitted with turbine jets just a couple of days ago? Well, it seems that the truth is out and Jaguar XJ will be fitted with the turbines.

In a recent development Island-based micro gas turbine company, Bladon Jets has announced a partnership with Jaguar Land Rover to develop a device fitted to hybrid petrol/electric cars that charges batteries on the go.

This is a good news for us auto enthusiast in India as the Jaguar Land Rover group is now owned and controlled by Tata Motors of India and the day may not be far when Tata Motors brings this technology to India built in their cars for us to experience the feeling in the near future.

Well getting back to the story this Ultra Lightweight Range Extender (ULRE) battery charger allows a hybrid vehicle to travel further without the inconvenience of stopping to charge the vehicle's batteries. The ULRE could be a significant piece of technology in the evolution of the next generation of electric vehicles.

Bladon Jets is leading a consortium that has been awarded funding from the UK government's Technology Strategy Board to develop the ULRE. The objective of the consortium, which includes luxury car maker Jaguar Land Rover and leading electrical machine company SR Drives, is to produce the world's first commercially viable ULRE.

Backing for the project was secured in a hotly contested £15 million funding competition organised by the Technology Strategy Board to support the advancement of the mass adoption of low carbon vehicles and is a key part of its wider programme to stimulate technology-enabled innovation and to help boost UK growth and productivity.

The ULRE will incorporate a Bladon Jets' patented axial flow gas turbine engine coupled to a high speed generator utilising SR Drives' technology. Design of the ULRE's packaging for vehicle integration will be overseen by Jaguar Land Rover.

This exclusive technology if goes right in every which ways, will not only lead to the renaissance of the British automotive industry but also the global automotive scene. This could be the future of low carbon vehicle development.

Bladon Jets is a world leader in the development of micro gas turbine engines. Its patented breakthrough axial flow technology enables the production of highly efficient, small gas turbine engines that are ideally suited for use in hybrid electric vehicles. The SR Drives Group is based in Harrogate UK and comprises two operating companies which are Switched Reluctance Drives Ltd (SRDL), and SR Drives Manufacturing Ltd (SRDML).

Both companies are wholly owned subsidiaries of Emerson Electric Co of St Louis, Missouri – the world's largest manufacturer of electric motors. The Technology Strategy Board is an executive non-departmental public body established by the UK government in 2007 and sponsored by the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS). The activities of the Technology Strategy Board are jointly supported and funded by BIS and other government departments, the devolved administrations, regional development agencies and research councils.

Jaguar XJThe adage “Born from the Jets” might be the slogan of the recently saved from death Swedish Saab car company, but guess what, the above mentioned adage will be more appropriate for the British car maker Jaguar.

We have a reason for that. Jaguar has been awarded funding from the U.K government to develop a small jet turbine as a range extender for a future hybrid Jaguar luxury car.

In stating the Jaguar luxury car, we mean the newly launched 2011 Jaguar XJ full-sized luxury sedan. This car which could get an extended-range electric model in its portfolio in a couple of years might also provide a platform for the innovative jet-powered range extender.

Yes, we call this innovative as the jet-powered turbine technology though was first developed by Rover Cars which developed JET1, the first-ever jet-powered turbine car, is one of the predecessor companies of Jaguar Land Rover, now owned by India's Tata Motors. So the technology fits the Jaguar cars to the T.
Rover Cars JET 1
Rover Cars’ JET1 which is currently housed in London’s Science Museum, ran on petrol, diesel or kerosene and sped up to 88 miles per hour. This car also spawned a Le Mans racer developed with BRM Formula One that averaged more than 100 mph and topped out at 142 mph.

The cars that run on turbine technology is smaller, lighter and emits less CO2 which should be a welcome news for the green warriors. The British government awarded $1.8 million in development funds to develop the turbine-based range extender for electric vehicles to a consortium of Jaguar-Land Rover, Bladon Jets, and SR Drives. The highlights of the modern micro-turbine technology is that it saves more than 200 pounds over a petrol engine for onboard power generation to recharge an electric car’s battery pack, while slightly reducing CO2 emissions. The Bladon Jets turbine has just 5 percent of the weight and parts count of a typical four-cylinder engine.

There are a few drawbacks which come imbibed with this technology as it is not so good for direct drive. As Chrysler learned a decade later, when it released 56 prototypes of its elegant Chrysler Turbine coupe for real-world tests by roughly 200 drivers, turbine technology proved too inefficient and expensive for production-car use.

Chrysler's test cars suffered from throttle lag, lack of low-end torque, very high exhaust temperatures, and mediocre fuel economy (17 mpg) from their 97-kilowatt (130-horsepower) turbine engines, which powered the car through a standard automatic transmission.

Bladon Jets micro turbine
Turbines also aren't particularly suited to the rapid acceleration cycles of varied driving. Using a turbine as a steady-speed source to generate electric power, on the other hand, lets it operate most efficiently and at close to its maximum output.

Scanned image of Honda-CR-ZThe show-stopper of the Tokyo Motor Show, the Honda CR-Z is poised to become the first hybrid car to come with a 6-speed manual transmission.

The CR-Z has come into limelight as it is going to have significantly better performance compared to its cousin, the fuel-economic Honda Insight.

Recently, the specification brochure of the 2011 Honda CR-Z has been revealed. The CR-Z will carry 1.5-liter i-VETEC 4-cylinder engine mated either to a 6-speed manual or CVT gearbox. The engine will churn out a power of 112 bhp at 6,000 rpm and a humble 14 bhp from its electric motor. The engine will also create a torque 145 Nm at 4,800 rpm with the Integrated Motor Assist (IMA) system boosting that by another torque of 77 Nm at 1,000 rpm. The CR-Z will be able to net a relatively uninspiring 0 to 100 km/h time of 9.7 seconds.

The dimensions haven't changed much from the "concept car" we saw at the Tokyo Motor Show earlier this year, with a 160.6-inch overall length, 68.5-inch width, 54.9-inch height and a wheelbase that spans 95.9 inches.

Since efficiency is the name of the game, the CR-Z will benefit from LED daytime running lights and turn signal indicators in the mirrors, along with three driving modes – Eco, Normal and Sport – each controllable from a dash mounted switch and with a different color surrounding the gauges based on the mode.

The car will be introduced in the Honda’s local market of Japan in 2010 February and will be brought to North America by the third quarter of 2010. The CR-Z will be priced between $19,000 to $25,000.

General Motors have long recovered from bankruptcy and rearing to show the world its grit in car manufacturing. The proposed launch of the electric vehicle, like none before, is a very good example of this above statement.

Brushing aside the fact that seeing is believing and taking into consideration the past glory of the company one could believe that the assured car from GM, Chevrolet Volt, will be seen in the roads by 2010, as per the promise.

The car has many peculiarities and it is expected to mark a strong comeback by General Motors. The Volt being an electric car and is also an eco-friendly car. By 2010 or 2011, it is expected that the demand for electric cars will increase and General Motors, as it looks, believes in this prophecy.

The Volt is a hybrid car that runs on lithium-ion batteries, the best to start with to begin the list of specialties. The car, like other electric cars, need not be taken to a station for charging their batteries.

The batteries could be charged through electric power or gasoline engine, at the comfort of your home of office or where ever you are, because it just needs a 120-240V AC electrical outlet. It certainly looks like General Motors has bounced back in the big league once more.

The Chevy Volt is powered by a 150 hp electric motor and a 1.4 liter 4 cylinder engine, and with the fully charged batteries of the Volt one can commute around 40 miles.

With more than a handful of hybrid cars and more to be launched by 2011, it could be a tough sailing for the Volt.

With the growing awareness of environment-friendly and fuel-efficient vehicles, Maruti Suzuki plans to introduce a range of hybrid cars in the Indian car market. The range of hybrids will include electric cars and compressed natural gas variants of some of its existing car models.

The car manufacturer has started working on its ambitious plan but it will take about three to four years for implementation. The CNG variants may roll out somewhere in 2010 or 2011 but the launch of electric cars will take longer.

Addition of CNG kit to the cars will make them costlier but even then the desire to introduce such variants is soaring. The key reason is that most of the car buyers across the country today are preferably buying cars that offer them low running cost and better mileage. And most of them are ready to pay an extra cost for better fuel efficiency and reduced emission.

Maruti also plans to introduce the fuel cell technology and is presently conducting research and development on its mid-sized Maruti Suzuki SX4. The car manufacturer is testing its successful sedan for introducing the hybrid technology that is likely to have a mix of fuel cells and high-pressure hydrogen. But this is nothing that you should get excited about as yet there is no confirmation whether the hybrid SX4 will enter India or not. But sooner or later the hybrid version of the SX4 is sure to roll out on Indian roads.

Maruti Suzuki is also evaluating possibilities of introducing electric cars in India. The key challenges that the manufacturer is facing are mileage per charge and price of the car. The company is conducting research to offer longer range of driving with the introduction of electric cars. And when it comes to price Maruti is always known to produce low-cost cars in huge volume.

Though for Maruti it’s a long way to go the company aims to achieve success while maintaining its number one position in the Indian car market.

Current challenges in the car industry due to growing mobility requirements, stringent emission norms, and declining crude oil are gradually making the green cars a focus of public attention. Thankfully, major advancements and innovations have given birth to fuel-efficient engines, hybrid cars, and battery-electric drive systems and options of alternative fuels like CNG, LPG, Hydrogen and biofuels. These can be an answer to future needs to sustain mobility.

The fascinating BlueZERO concept is a trio of green concepts designed by Mercedes-Benz with an aim to overcome challenges and meet new market needs. It displays three unique and interesting concept cars. The sandwich floor design used in these cars makes them even more attractive and inspiring.

Sandwich design is a unique and impressive architecture that sandwiches the drivetrain partly in front and partly underneath the passenger compartment in a sloping position. This is done to ensure improved safety, better packaging, and optimized usage of space.

Interestingly, the first concept of the trio houses a liquid-cooled high-voltage lithium-ion battery that powers an electric motor linked to the front wheels. This powerful battery runs to about 200km in a single charge and can reach a top speed of 150 km/h without expelling any amount carbon dioxide.

The second concept accommodates a new generation fuel cell which generates a peak power output of 121 bhp in association with the hydrogen tank and a high voltage battery. The most interesting part of the concept is that during slow speed manoeuvres energy is used exclusively from the battery and while accelerating, the energy is drawn from both the battery and the fuel cell.

The final concept holds a conventional 67 bhp turbo-charged petrol engine as well as a petrol tank. This works as a hybrid car that provides a maximum range of 600km on a tank full of petrol. With the battery power, the car can run up to 100 km in one charge.

With unique architecture, engine technologies, and efficient drive systems, the Mercedes-Benz BlueZERO concept is speculated to become the future of mobility which will definitely reshape the car industry.

New Mahindra Scorpio Car in India

Signs of growing popularity of green cars in the car industry are slowly getting prominent.
And the only reason behind this is the rising mass concern on global warming.

You would be shocked to know that vehicular pollution contributes about 70% to the total air pollution. Therefore, there is an immediate requirement of more environment friendly cars across the world.

Earlier, car manufacturers and car owners were completely dependent on gasoline. But now, with the advent of new technologies, the dependency on conventional fuel has been reduced. No wonder why car manufacturers are heading towards the production of electric and hybrid cars. The Reva Maini and the Honda Civic Hybrid being the first electric car and hybrid car, respectively, in the country have gathered overwhelming response from Indian consumers.

The success of these cars has inspired other car manufacturers to introduce green cars in the Indian car market. Presently, many car manufacturers are developing their future green cars.

Mahindra after flavouring the success of Scorpio hybrid is now planning to gift more green cars to the Indian market. This time its green profile includes both electric and hybrid cars.

The company has recently launched the scintillating Mahindra Xylo with the punch line ‘the era of sedans is over’. Truly, this MUV will give complex to sedans with its design and performance that are a blend of MUV and sedan.

It seems Mahindra is in the process to overtake its rivals as it has also announced to launch 10 new car models in the coming time.

Honda Seil India, rejoices the high sales of its hybrid car.

It’s astonishing to know that Honda Civic Hybrid is making a big bang during the time of inflation. But that’s a fact that since the time Honda Civic Hybrid made its debut in the country, it has sold over 50 cars in the domestic car market. This means that in a span of three months, the car has reached unexpected heights.

Most of the hybrid car customers are those who are environment friendly and are willing to maintain the ecological balance. This desire of the customers made them move towards the car but then, all are satisfied, happy and well travelled with their hybrid cars.

However, the encouraging sale of the most expensive sedan has given Honda a strong reason to smile and maintain its initial upward sales target.

Hybrid cars are in! The German luxury car maker, BMW has announced its plan to introduce the hybrid cars in India by next two years. Though, currently only one hybrid car (Honda Civic) is ruling the Indian roads, the car is expected to get its siblings very soon.

The hybrid car from BMW will also make its international debut at the same time. The company’s sale target has been raised even in this course of inflation. The increasing sale target during this tough time is really appreciated. The reason is very simple! BMW produces luxury cars that are exclusively designed and manufactured for the premium customers, who are not at all affected by the increasing fuel price or interest rate. Moreover, they don’t have to depend on car loans for the payment.

With such an impression of the BMW cars, we are sure that the upcoming hybrids will also create a benchmark in India as well as global car industry.
