Honda Motor Corporation on the very first day of the Delhi Auto Expo unveiled its concept small car which will be hitting the roads by early 2011 in India. This small car has been conceptualized for emerging markets like India and Thailand to begin with but may gradually be launched in the global markets. The name of the just-unveiled small car was rather unusual as Honda simply preferred to call their car as “New Small”. The design of the cars looks very modern yet contemporary with extensive usage of LED lights. Though the grill of the “New Small” resembles that of the Honda Jazz, that’s where the similarities end as this new car has a design which is out of the mill with raked C-pillar, clam-shell bonnet with a nice twinge of curves and bends along the body of the car. If the sources are to be believed, this small car will be powered by a 1.0 VTEC engine, while the 1.2 litre engine from the Jazz might also be a possibility. This car is slated to compete against the Hyundai i10, Maruti Suzuki Swift and the base version of the Hyundai i20. Also at the Honda bay was the CR-Z concept, the first sporty hybrid to sport a manual gearbox, the entire range of Indian cars, three Jazz concepts including a Mugen-tuned version and ASIMO, Honda’s humanoid robot. Honda Motor will join other global auto makers, which are keen to tap into the budget-conscious Indian customers' demand for such compact cars. In India, Honda Motor operates as Honda Siel Cars India Ltd., a joint venture with an Indian business conglomerate Siddharth Shriram Group. It has been noted that Indian car buyers are showing a preference for cars with automatic transmission. Lately, the automatic variants of cars have risen up the sales charts. Most of the cars launched over the past one and a half year come with five to six speed gear box. These cars show a good fuel efficiency, superior pick up and outstanding performance. The Hyundai i10 is one of the top-selling cars with automatic gear box. The car is selling over 1,600 automatic transmission variants per month, which is much more than the company's initial estimates. As a result, Hyundai Motors India has introduced an automatic transmission variant in its Verna sedan. In the same way, the Chevrolet Captiva also came up in the automatic variant with a four-wheel drive because of huge demand. Cars like the Honda City, Hyundai i20, Mahindra Scorpio Mitsubishi Outlander and many more are available in both manual and automatic transmission in the Indian market. While, a number of cars like the Ford Endeavour and the newly launched Toyota Fortuner are expected to be revised with an automatic transmission in future. These cars in the premium segment are currently selling in the manual transmission variant. An important reason behind brisk sales of automatic transmission is car buyers put emphasize on driving comfort. Moreover, the ‘stop-go-stop’ nature of traffic in metros has forced Indian car buyers to pick up the auto transmissions. Therefore, car buyers do not mind pitching a bit more for driving comfort, especially when it is spread over EMIs. Another point has been noted that a woman driver opts for high-end features and automatic transmission is one of them. Honda Siel Cars India has revealed that it sells the automatic transmission variants for most of its models like Civic, Accord, City and CRV. In the past, only 5 per cent of the sales belonged to the old model of Honda City with automatic transmission, but now the sales have risen to 14 per cent in the new model of the City with automatic transmission. Moreover, 51 per cent of the Honda Accord sold in India today is with automatic transmission. Luxury car makers like BMW sells all its cars in its automatic transmission. This German car maker has found out that the buyers from the creamy layer prefer only the automatic transmission variant as they believe that automatic transmission reduces the risk of wear and tear of the car in the long run even if the cars are drove by chauffeurs. It looks like car buyers in India do not want to compromise on comfort and safety even while buying small cars. While India is still a frugal country with a cap on high spending, car manufactures are seeing that top end variants are selling like hot cakes. All car manufacturers including Maruti Suzuki, Tata Motors, Honda Siel Cars and Toyota Motors are witnessing an unprecedented jump in sales of the top end variants of their products. In fact, the sales of top end variants have been so good that car manufacture are contemplating on phasing out base models altogether. Take a look at the statistics, Maruti Suzuki SX4 top end variant ZXi constitutes over 70 percent of the sales of the model. The same has been witnessed in Swift Dzire sedan where ZXi and VXi variants outsell the base LXi. The small car Alto LXi variant forms nearly 60 percent of the sales of this model. The same goes for Toyota which has many premium cars marketed in India. The top end variants of the expensive Corolla Altis and Innova are selling way beyond their initial expectation. The Innova VX was initially planned to be around 35 percent of the production of the car, but now constitutes for more than 50 percent of the sales. Much of the sales for the Corolla Altis come from the sale of its top end model 1.8 GL&V variant. Car buyers in India are no more interested in bare bones vehicles as cars. They are demanding more luxury features like anti-lock brakes, airbags, automatic climate control, engine immobilizers, alloy wheel and even special colours. This trend denotes that Indian market has grown up from its initial image and wants bigger and better cars. Bare bones cars are long sufficient to satisfy their need for a car. Honda Siel Cars India successfully organized their celebrated customer interaction programme ‘Honda Fest’ across all its 65 dealerships in India. This is the second such programme, after a similar function was held last year to mark the launch of the new Honda City. The latest Honda fest was focused on the new kid in the block Honda Jazz. Test drives on all the three variants (Base, Mode, Active) of the Jazz was available for the customers. Honda Fest, which had been organised in the third weekend of June, was a treat to the Honda customers as they could test drive all the cars in the Honda Portfolio. With entertainment being the main theme coinciding with the showcasing of the Honda Jazz, recreational programmes such as pupet show was organised for the kids. All India music, dance, quiz and painting competitions were also held during the occasion and the results of these competitions would be announced by Honda Siel Cars later in the year. Honda Siel Cars along with their dealerships sent out invitations to customers and corporate companies across the country to come and participate in the festival. Honda Motors is the only company organizing such customer interaction events, particularly around the time of every new car from their stable is launched. It is an unique initiative by the car manufacturer to increase awareness about their products among consumers. Honda has been conducting similar fests in its other markets such as Japan, Germany and Italy. Honda officials feel that such fests would encourage customers to walk in to dealerships with a positive approach. It is an initiative worth emulating by other car manufacturers in India.
