New Honda Accord Cars in India

If you are an ardent lover of Honda Cars then it’s time for you to save your pockets. Honda is soon going to raise the prices of its entire range of cars in India by Rs 30,000 to 3,54,000.

Though it’s tough to accept the price hike at this stage as recessionary pressure is not completely relieved. But the manufacturers have no other options left with them. In the past 8 months Indian rupee has depreciated by over 16% and the Japanese Yen has strengthened by 10.5%. Currency fluctuations have driven Honda to increase car prices. And this is mainly because it has tremendously increased the cost of import. For some time the manufacturer did absorbed the impact but how long?

No car manufacturer can carry on absorbing the impact of high input cost as well as high import cost anymore. And so is Honda.

Honda CR-V is an imported car model whose price has been increased by Rs 3, 54,000. The prices of Honda City has been increased in the range of Rs 30, 000 to Rs 35, 000 and Civic has been raised by Rs 50, 000 to Rs 60, 000. Even the Honda Accord will now be costlier by Rs 1, 00, 000. The price of CR-V, Civic and City will be effective from April 1, 2009 whereas Honda Accord will bear the revised price tag from March 16, 2009.

New Hyundai Santa Fe Cars in India

It was disclosed earlier that Hyundai was to roll out its Santa Fe in India in 2008. But may be the impact of recession pushed back the launch plan. And now when the market is gradually making attempts to recover, Hyundai is all set to brighten the Indian SUV segment with its strong and powerful SUV Santa Fe.

Successfully running in the international markets, the rugged SUV Santa Fe seems to borrow its style and design from coupe and promises to quench the thirst of a buyer for sportiness as well as style. It will possess the ground clearance and power of a SUV but the visual appeal of a stylish coupe.

The imposing exterior highlighted by slanting headlamps, flowing waistline, and chrome lined radiator grille is sure to make a distinctive presence in the Indian roads. Contradictory to the fact that the Santa Fe will come with a standard CRDi engine, it will now be launched with two variants that include the 2.7-litre petrol with a power output of 190 bhp and 2.2-litre diesel engine with a power delivery of 151 bhp.

There were speculations that the Santa Fe will roll out on Indian roads with a price tag of around Rs 8 Lakh. But no ways! This powerful SUV is pitted against the market leader Honda CR-V and is packed with host of luxurious, versatile, and futuristic technologies. It will be priced above the CR-V at around Rs 23 Lakh.

Apart from the Honda CR-V, Hyundai Santa Fe will also compete with the Chevrolet Captiva and the Ford Endeavour in the Indian car market. But it’s difficult to say how far the proposed Hyundai car will be successful in overpowering the Indian SUV segment with such a high price tag. But it is yet to know whether the features and the technologies in the SUV are worth the price. The year 2009 will portray a true picture of its market success once the Santa Fe is launched.

All those who wished that Honda CR-V had diesel variants can see their dream come true soon. Honda is planning to bring in a diesel variants for the modern SUV. The petrol version has already set a high standard for quality. However, the key factor will be pricing. If Honda plans to keep the prices, it will naturally cut costs on interior comforts. The diesel variants could come without automatic transmission and CD changers.

The CR-V is facing stiff competition from Chevrolet Captiva. Honda would also not like to upset its customers with a high priced diesel variant as Captiva already has an affordable diesel variant below the CR-V price range.

It remains to be seen whether the two will compete neck to neck or one will beat the other in technology and competition.

Did Ford need Fusion at all? I think no. Fusion has been moving slowly in sales clearly giving a signal to its manufacturers. Though it may have been a fast mover in Europe, but the car has not made any significant impact on the crossover SUV in Indian car market. Look at the recently launched Honda CRV. It has sold several numbers across several cities. The demand for the SUV is just dropping in like leaves from a tree in autumn.

Fusion only has an impressive interior and its off-road tyres, but nothing more. Its performance of 68 bhp seems too little. Its heavy body mass dose not give the push you want from a Ford car. The unimaginative designing is also of no help. The petrol and diesel variants are good on road performances but slow while moving of the shelf.

Ford would have done well if it had stuck on to sedans Fiesta and Ikon and the really impressive SUV Endeavor. Fusion, just not fit into the portfolio.

Is India still stuck in old world? The cars sold in India still carry the age old designs. Interestingly, they are still selling in large numbers despite being put in history books in mature western countries. Look at the line up of cars, sold as premium cars in India like Hyundai Accent, Octavia, Ford Ikon and Mitsubishi Lancer. Moreover, Indians are forced to pay fancy sums for these outdated cars.

The only new models which can be called contemporary are Hyundai i10, Volkswagen Passat, Maruti A-Star and Honda CR-V. Car manufacturers are taking marketing old cars as new in this country. Will the car buyer be forced to be stuck in time wrap?
