The Ambassador was the only car to be used as taxis, followed by small cars like the Indica. Today luxury cars like the Corolla, Benz, and Lancer are also being used to ferry government officials and local commuters who prefer luxury cars for enhanced comfort.

With so many cozy cars equipped with innovative and advanced technologies, Hindustan Motors lost hopes to bring back the Ambassador on Indian roads. But today, the company has come up with fuel-efficient engines with petrol, diesel and CNG versions that meet the Bharat Stage 2 and Bharat Stage 3 emission norms. With a better fuel efficient engine, the company is sure that Ambassador will be back on Indian roads and become a good value proposition for the taxi segment.

It is said that the company has made an investment of Rs. 60 Million to update the engines and is expecting to hit the sales target of 12,500 units this fiscal year. Definitely food for thought.

The good old Ambassador car from Hindustan Motors is slowly moving out of government patronage. It was like the ‘Bhishma Pitamah’ of the car industry. It was always there when younger and newer car models kept hitting the roads and it hung around for a very long time.

Over the years it came to symbolize bureaucracy. The government has now decided to replace the fuel guzzling ambassadors with the more stylish and fuel efficient Ford Ikon Flair. This comes after a recent approval for the Hyundai Accent. The golden age of the Ambassador is finally at an end.

It's time for celebration! Ambassador, from Hindustan Motors (HM) celebrates its golden jubilee. This oldie, who ruled the Indian roads for 50 long years, is the oldest automobile brand in India. Born in 1957 in Uttarpara in Kolkata, Ambassador was originally based on 1948 Morris Oxford and later on Land master.

Amby, as it commonly known, was sold 15,000 units per month. This was the only Indian-made vehicle that could be upgraded to a bullet-proof version. With the new generation car, Amby has lost its place in the auto market but it still a carries charm. Some of the central and state governments, as well as the tourism sector are still among its most loyal customers.

HM plans to Pamper Amby with a new limited edition model called the ‘The Golden Amby’ with new ceremonial color, upholstery, and fittings, but it will retain its bulky lines, along with the legendary “bench seat” at the front. HM will also introduce a new model every year that will run on either LPG, CNG, Petrol, or Diesel; and to add a little spice it will be also enhanced with sunroof.

So many new generation cars have come and vanished but Amby still retains its position in everyones heart. Truly said ‘Old is Gold’ and Amby will always be India’s favourite.

It was shocking to note that the Hindustan Motors, one of the most well known automobile houses in India, has been fined for selling a defective Mitsubishi Lancer car.

The state consumer commission has asked the company to pay the car owner Rs. 11.75 Lakh along with the refund amount within a month or the vehicle should be replaced. The commission noted that the engine, which is the heart of the car, had a manufacturing defect and rejected the company’s appeal that no other defects were found on the car.

On reading the article on the website, as a car owner myself, I suddenly felt vulnerable to car maker’s mercy. It is not always that we check the car completely when purchasing a car, and take the manufacturer and dealers word as truth. In this case the manufacturer would have earned golden points if the defective car was replaced immediately with a new one. But Indian auto makers still want to take a consumer for a ride.

For every petitioner like Ravinder Pal Singh, there are thousands who cannot fight the big auto companies and would rather choose the easiest way out. With the economy going at the current rate, thousands of cars will roll out of manufacturer sites every year and it would be nice if they gave immediate remedies to consumer woes. But, I think this is asking for too much.
