It is almost confirmed that General Motors will bring the Chinese car into India. And we shall receive a final picture of this once the negotiations between GM and Shanghai Automotive Industry Corp is finalized. This act of the GM makes it very obvious that the company has all its heart and soul put into rejuvenate its past glory. The company is getting ready for the towering auto competition in the company, which it foresees.

Wuling will be the other partner in this endeavor. Wuling was started eight months ago. The company is said to be in a state of dilemma currently, where it does not know what to do and what not to. Presently, the three companies are in a three-way joint venture in China. And they are under the label of SAIC-GM-Wuling Automobile Co.

The company is planning to bring beyond commercial vehicles though the partnership. The company will get to India commercial vehicles and passenger vehicles with Wuling trading mini trucks, mini vans, and even the GM Chevrolet Spark mini car.

GM is the biggest foreign automaker in China. And the company has an expected sale of about 1.4 million vehicles in the country.

General Motors has finally decided to kills off the Pontiac brand after being hit badly by the aftermaths of recession. The brand will be wiped out completely by the end of 2010. It is a part of cost cutting plan by the company which is seeking a bailout package from the U.S. government. After Pontiac, General Motors will stress on the brands like Hummer, Saab and Saturn.

The closure of these brands was on cards for a long time since General Motors has been hit by financial problems and huge debts. The closing of the brand is one of its attempts to convince the federal government about its seriousness to continue its business. This will help the company receive cash from the government and also help avoid the bankruptcy option.

Pontiac cars have been under production since 1926 and are sold in U.S., Canada, and Mexico. The first Pontiac car was powered by a 39 bhp, 3.1-litre engine. Some of the classic Pontiacs are the GTO, Firebird, Trans-Am, Fiero and the Bonneville. The Fiero is a cult figure among car enthusiasts. Many modern supercar styling is inspired by Fiero. Pontiac car have also been featured in many films and television shows.

The death of some of General Motors brands was imminent because of its redundant policies. The company follows a policy of producing and selling the same car under different brands. Due to this the Cadillac brand was on its death bed a few years ago until it was revived by some fresh models. Many of the GM trucks available under the brand name of Chevrolet, Saturn, Pontiac and Chevy cars are very similar except for some cosmetic changes.

General Motors India is also affected by the troubles faced by its parent company. While investments are still coming in, General Motors India does not sound as upbeat as it was a few years ago about taking over the Indian car market. The Indian arm of company should be careful to avoid such multi-branding of similar cars. Indian customers may not take it lightly.

New Chevrolet Cruze Cars In India

General Motors being optimistic of the Indian car market has planned to launch yet another car model this year. It is gearing up to launch the stylish Chevrolet Cruze which will replace the present model Chevrolet Optra in India.

The new car is likely to carry a 2-litre diesel engine and a 1.8-litre petrol engine that will generate 147 bhp and 138 bhp respectively. The capacious car will have large storage space, big door bins, well-designed center console, and plush seats. It will also get a unique dual cockpit.

Chevrolet Cruze is expected to compete in the premium car segment with the Honda Civic and the Toyota Corolla. Similar to Optra, it will also have a stylish exterior, high quality audio system, and climate control system. The driver cockpit will be simple and intuitive, better than those in Civic and in Corolla. The car is speculated to carry a lesser price tag than the Civic and the Corolla. Chevrolet Cruze is General Motors’ first car that will be built on the company’s new global delta platform.

It will be rolled out from General Motors’ Halol plant. The arrival of Cruze will ruffle the future of many models in the D segment as the well-networked servicing outlets of General Motors is likely to play a key role.

Eyeing the success of the Spark and the U-VA, General Motors is enthusiastic to introduce another small car priced at Rs 4 Lakh. The new car will be a global product and is expected to get 50% indigenisation component. The new small car is expected to roll out from the Talegaon plant in Gujarat by this year end.

General Motors’ business is constantly growing in India, whereas in home ground it is going through a trouble time experiencing plunging sales and financial crisis. The growing demand for small cars in India has inspired the company to bring in more small cars into the market. Hope the new small car will too carry the stylish design and attractive features like Chevy’s other small cars. It will face competition from the yet to be launched Honda Jazz, Hyundai i10, i20, Maruti Suzuki Swift, and the Skoda Fabia.
