General Motors India showcased its electric car e-Spark in The Delhi Auto Show 2010. The E-Spark has been manufactured by GM India in technical collaboration with REVA, pioneers in the electric car domain. This is in line with GM India and REVA`s commitment to introduce environment friendly mobility solutions in the country. The electric version of Chevy’s small car in India, the Spark, e-Spark is GM India`s bold move into the Battery Electric Vehicle segment and will be India`s first 4-door Passenger Electric Vehicle. The e-Spark will be one of the leading platforms of GM in India in its `Drive to Green` initiative. Karl Sylm, president and managing director, GM India in the occasion of unveiling of the e-Spark said “GM’s ability to develop platforms and REVA’s capability in developing electric drive-trains and control systems will result in the consumer having a wider choice of EVs. We hope Central and State government will extend t he necessary support to develop the necessary infrastructure for electric vehicle charging and providing specific financial benefits to consumers, who make the choice to adopt an environment-friendly mode of personal transport. We look forward to the support of the Honorable Chief Minister of Delhi in our Drive to Green initiative.” The e-Spark will come equipped with remote diagnostics system that will allow Service Engineers to monitor each car remotely for vital parameters and customers can be informed in advance if the need arises. This will minimize vehicle downtime and allow for advance readiness for vehicle servicing prior to arrival at service stations. This is a path breaking initiative that has the ability to re-define how automotive companies in India working in partnership plan for future mobility solutions keeping the carbon footprints and environmental issues in mind. The e-Spark will be one of the leading platforms of GM in India in its `Drive to Green` initiative. E-Spark might be priced around 7-8 Lakhs when launched in India in about a couple of months. The sturdy American muscle car, the Chevrolet Camaro is all set to make its Indian outing. And of course not for the filming of “ Transformers” series, in which the car has starred, hold your breath, as a showcase model in the upcoming Delhi Auto Expo. General Motors has made elaborate plans to unveil this beauty at the Auto Expo to be held in Delhi next Jan. Well, here comes the rude awakening, the guys in General Motors have no intention of bringing in this model and selling it here in India like Volkswagen has done with its Beetle and Fiat with its 500, but is being brought to the Auto Expo as just a brand-building exercise for the company. The original model was initially designed by GM to compete with Ford Mustang, which had already carved a niche for itself in the swinging sixties. The Camaro became increasingly famous and has attained a cult status around the globe as one of the best looking muscle car or Pony car of the world. The car which GM is planning to exhibit in the Expo is the fifth generation Camaro went into production in March earlier this year. The Chevrolet Camaro is available in 10 exciting colours and an option of two engines, the V6-Equipped LS variant and the powerful V8-powered SS model. Other prominent available features include a wireless cell-phone link, USB port, satellite radio, and remote engine start. Its 2-door convertible model is due to arrive in the overseas market by mid-2011. Apart from the Camaro , several other models also will be showcased by GM which also includes Chevrolet Volt, Chevy Aveo CNG and electric version of the small car Spark. General Motors is also launching the hatchback, Chevrolet Beat on January 04 coinciding with the Expo. It seems like Hyundai is on a roll. One year after promising to become the leading manufacturer in fuel economy, Hyundai delivered by topping the latest U.S. Environmental Protection Agency fuel economy report. Hyundai passed all major manufacturers in Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) including traditional leaders like Honda and Toyota.
The report demonstrates the effectiveness of Hyundai's value-driven fuel-efficiency strategy, which focuses on the intelligent application of cost-effective technologies. The report also substantiates Hyundai's leadership in the race to achieve the US government-mandated 2016 CAFE standard of 35.5 miles per gallon.
"Our thoughtful application of cost-effective, fuel-efficient technologies has helped us achieve our goal of leading the industry in fuel economy ahead of schedule," said John Krafcik, president and CEO, Hyundai Motor America. He also added that Hyundai hoped to extend that leadership with the launch of our new direct injection, turbocharging and lithium-polymer hybrid technologies, all of which will be a part of the 2011 Sonata lineup launching early next year.
Hyundai is aligning global R&D resources at its engineering centers in California, Michigan, Korea, India and Germany to develop the Blue Drive technologies needed to achieve fuel efficiency goals. Under the Hyundai Blue Drive strategy, technologies such as direct injection, turbo-charging, hybrid drive systems and a number of others will all play larger roles in powering future models to offer consumers lower emissions, enhanced performance and more miles per gallon.
Carazoo.com here gives the list of car makers who have scored high in producing fuel-efficient vehicles according to Environmental Protection Agency Fuel Economy Reports :
Group Fuel Economy (mpg) ---------------------------------- Manufacturer Overall (Cars/Trucks) -------------- --------------------- Hyundai 30.1 ------- ---- Honda 29.7 ----- ---- Volkswagen 29.6 ---------- ---- Toyota 29.4 ------ ---- Kia 28.0 --- ---- Nissan 27.2 ------ ---- BMW 26.9 --- ---- Ford 25.7 ---- ---- General Motors 24.5 -------------- ---- Chrysler 23.2 -------- ----

Scarcity of fossil fuels has left the car industry in grief. At the time when the global recession is mocking at the troubling economy, the issue of fuel deficiency around the globe is alarming the car industry of future cyclone. The fuel prices are fluctuating now and then. No one knows when the economy will get stable and so are the fuel prices. Once it regains its normal stage, the prices would definitely go high with extra burden on pockets. As a solution to this, many car manufacturers are rolling out cars that run on fuel other than conventional petrol or diesel. Manufacturer’s concern over fuel depletion has given birth to many new technologies that support the use of alternative fuels. To overcome the future trouble, the auto industry has invented alternatives like the LPG (liquefied petroleum gas), CNG (compressed natural gas), hybrid cars, electric cars, bio-fuel (ethanol, bio-diesel), hydrogen-and air-powered cars. Among these, CNG and LPG cars are getting attention due to their low running cost. Also, these cars rejoice Government’s interest as they are light on environment. Therefore to take advantage of these, car manufactures are fast developing and introducing these cars in the car market. Car manufacturers like the Maruti, Tata, and Hyundai have already released CNG and LPG version of their car models. Now, General Motors is all set to add the LPG version of Chevrolet Spark and the CNG version of Chevrolet Aveo in its car portfolio. Both these cars presently doing good business in the Indian market and the new variants will definitely increase their market share. General Motors is gradually expanding its network in the country inspite of its troubled position in the home town. With a view to capture more consumers, it has also intelligently ventured into the used car business which has a great potential in the price conscious Indian market. Not shattered by the uncertainty in global financial markets and weakening economic, General Motors is all set to make India a manufacturing hub of engines for the Asia Pacific regions. The General Motors is known for manufacturing compelling and high quality cars. Recently, its Chevrolet cars like the Spark and Aveo U-VA topped the list of Quality Cars in India unveiled by the J.D. Power Asia in their respective segments. Seeing the performance of its car models in the country, General Motors is optimistic about the Indian market. And with this perception, the company is taking various steps to strength its presence in India. It now plans to develop new and refined car engines in its R&D centre at Bangalore which will be manufactured at its Talegaon facility. The plant is expected to produce 200,000 units and the capacity can be further increased depending on domestic demand. These engines will be targeted for export to emerging car markets in the Asia Pacific and Eastern European region. To achieve the desired production capacity and meet the export target, the company also plans to hire more number of employees and workers for its R&D centre as well as manufacturing facility. About 300 employees in the Bangalore facility and 200 workers in the Talegaon facility are planned to be hired for quick and efficient design and production. Greener fuels like LPG and CNG are gradually gaining prominence in the car industry. Many car manufacturers have started implementing the use of these fuels in their respective car models. Many are still on track and heading towards a greener environment. Taking for example Hyundai that has already introduced greener fuels in its successful compact car, Hyundai Santro and a CNG version of Hyundai Accent. Moving a step further, the company also plans to launch LPG and CNG versions of its Getz. Even General Motors is persistently working to introduce green versions of all their car models. GM already has a CNG version of its Optra running successfully in cities like Mumbai, Delhi, and Vadodara where CNG is readily available. There are no plans to stop the production of the petrol and diesel versions but CNG and LPG versions will definitely be a better option in the Indian future. In line with Hyundai and General Motors, Mahindra-Renault also started dispatching the CNG versions of Logan, especially for the taxi market. In a city like Mumbai where Logan is adopted in huge numbers by a leading taxi service provider, Meru, CNG version may prove to be a blessing for both the taxi service provider and the car manufacturer. The initial additional cost of gas run vehicles and a weak network of gas-dispensing stations will prove to be a major deterrent in introducing these vehicles. But still there is nothing that can bring down the desire of these car companies to introduce greener fuels. This initiative is not only a profitable decision for them, but also for the betterment of human race. Labels: Car-Manufacturer, CNG-cars, General Motors

Luxury car lovers were excited when there was news of Hummer and Cadillac coming to India by 2008. But it seems that the launch of the SUVs has been postponed. The further launch is not decided but looks like there will be a delay as the General Motors will be concentrating more on manufacturing small cars. General Motors aims at increasing the production of its popular small car the Spark. This cool looking model has clicked well especially among the younger crowd. It carries style and performance. Following Spark's success, the company will be rolling out another small car that will be cheaper than Spark. It is little disappointing for the SUV lovers who were waiting to own Hummer or Cadillac but the good thing is that the launch of these sturdy vehicles is still on… though little delayed. The Ambassador was the only car to be used as taxis, followed by small cars like the Indica. Today luxury cars like the Corolla, Benz, and Lancer are also being used to ferry government officials and local commuters who prefer luxury cars for enhanced comfort. With so many cozy cars equipped with innovative and advanced technologies, Hindustan Motors lost hopes to bring back the Ambassador on Indian roads. But today, the company has come up with fuel-efficient engines with petrol, diesel and CNG versions that meet the Bharat Stage 2 and Bharat Stage 3 emission norms. With a better fuel efficient engine, the company is sure that Ambassador will be back on Indian roads and become a good value proposition for the taxi segment. It is said that the company has made an investment of Rs. 60 Million to update the engines and is expecting to hit the sales target of 12,500 units this fiscal year. Definitely food for thought. While car companies rejoiced in the months of March and April when car sales were high, the succeeding month of May left them in tears. After April, car sales started dipping. While the car industry posted a growth of 22 percent in the month of April, the record for May was a mere 13-15 percent.
Maruti continues to lead as always followed immediately by enthusiastic Hyundai. But General Motors which has being doing well over the last couple of years has witnessed a sudden slowdown.
With input costs for car manufacturers being ever on the rise and as the world crude oil will continue to price $120 plus per barrel, the Indian car industry needs to come up with a new strategy to arrest falling car sales.

After successfully introducing itself in the Indian new car market with all its fabulous schemes and offer, the General Motors is now moving towards used car market. The big players like Maruti Suzuki, Hyundai, Honda, Toyota, Ford already have their pre-owned car outlets. These companies not only continue to offer services to new car buyers, but also for pre-owned car takers. GM would also try to generate new car sales through its old car outlets. It is also a step in the direction to capture 10 percent of Indian car market in a short duration. GM also plans to establish certified used car outlets. Simultaneously, GM continues to set up new dealerships across the country and constructing a second plant at Talegaon in Pune. It looks like GM wants to capture the whole of Indian market. The famed project of plug-in hybrid Chevrolet Volt by General Motors Corporation is progressing rapidly. The company sowed off the progress on the car to a select audience of journalist and analysts. The concept of Volt involves a 40 mile run powered by 400 pound T-shaped lithium-ion battery pack. This will be the first attempt when lithium ion batteries, now used widely in all electronic goods, will be used to run a car. It is designed to be used in any weather condition. Volt will leapfrog from the Toyota Prius hybrid design. Chevrolet Volt was supposed to participate in the 2008 Auto Expo in New Delhi. However, the car failed to make it to subsequent auto shows, across the world. The company is now planning to launch the car in 2010. Labels: Chevrolet cars, General Motors

General Motors forayed into India way back in 2003 with their Tavera MUV. Five years on and several milestones later, GM's new plans are optimistic and exciting. The Tavera MUV has appealed to the cab market as well as families. Their Aveo sedan has seen steady sales in numbers. Their small car the Spark is attracting a large number of customers. GM has set itself a target of 90,000 cars for 2008, which is 30,000 more than the target they achieved in 2007. This naturally means that they have to step on the gas, and increase their service outlets accordingly. GM plans on increasing the number from 145 to 160 service stations which will take care of fulfilling the 'Chevrolet Promise.' GM has a lot to offer in the future. Their Innova-like MPV scheduled for International markets was caught testing recently. Their small cars Aveo and Spark will be introduced in LPG formats later this year. Another small car is also on the cards, this one being smaller than the Spark in terms of size and price. GM is simultaneously working on engines displacing 1 to 1.4 litres which will find its place in its models in the near future. Low cost pickup vans and similar vehicles are also in pipeline, which indicates GM's desire to invade into commercial vehicles segment of the market as well. One big advantage of GM's cars is that they are tried, tested and accepted in International markets. If you are planning to buy any of their cars, you can do so without a second thought. The car manufacturers have now moved from big cities to sell their products. They have found out that the B and C cities have a high market which is waiting to be tapped. Car manufacturers feel that the smaller cities have a higher market for lower segment cars. However, the problem lies in arranging finances as most rural people borrow from private from moneylenders. Assessing this need, market leader Maruti Suzuki has partnered with Chennai based Shriram finances. General Motors, which is already leading in urban areas, has now set its eyes on rural areas. The company has tied up with Reliance, Tata Capital, ICICI and GMAC for special financing schemes. Labels: Car-manufacturers-in-India, General Motors, Maruti Suzuki, Reliance
The ‘Spark’-ling success of Chevrolet seems to have created new hopes for General Motors in India. The company is set to come up with a new small car exclusively for India with a cheaper than GM's current lowest priced car in India. It will be a new addition to the already crowded portfolio of Chevrolet which currently has cars for all segments like Spark to Tavera to Optra Magnum.
Surprisingly, General Motors is doing well when others are witnessing low sales performance. The company is planning two huge facilities and is now planning a small car. Nothing seems to be stopping the Generals’ growth. Labels: Chevrolet, General Motors, India, Optra Magnum, Small Car, Spark, Tavera

The recent success of the Chevrolet Spark seems to have rekindled the spirit of General Motors in India. The company is coming up with a new small car exclusively for India. But not immediately. It’s going to take some time – 2 years. They already have a decent line up of small cars like the Aveo U-VA, the SRV, and the one we just mentioned - the Spark. The car they are planning will be a refreshing new addition to this already crowded small car portfolio. Labels: Chevrolet, General Motors, launch, new car launch, small cars

You hear about the news that General Motors is launching close to 50 ethanol cars by 2012? Can anyone confirm if this is a rumor? I heard that 11 ethanol-enabled cars will be brought out this year in 2008 and 15 in 2009. I hope that GM considers their launch in India along with its international launches. Pollution levels in urban India are reaching unbearable levels – seen the news lately! Smog and heavy toxins are having a damaging effect on kids’ health. And as far as I can tell, the best solution would be to reduce carbon emissions on roads. My 10 year old son suffers from asthma and all these masks and filters for the mouth and nose don’t help much. Trucks and autos and vans are the government’s responsibility, but atleast we the people of India can do something about our bikes and cars! I support GM and any other manufacturer that will help keep the environment clean. I hope that GM launches these ethanol cars in full scale in India without looking for profit motives as a boon to the next generation. General Motors are pampering their ‘ Captiva’ in a big way. After its launch in Delhi and Kolkata, GM launched this premium SUV in Kochi (Kerala). It looks like the Captiva is picking up the Indian car market with unique styling, power, comfort, and last but not least best-in-class safety. This SUV is best suited for urban driving because of its sleek and elegant body and smooth handling. The interior flaunts classy features, smart technology, and cutting-edge design cuts. Captiva is going to be competing against the Mitsubishi Pajero, Nissan X-Trail, Endeavour, Hyundai Tucson and Honda CR-V. I can’t wait to get my hands on this beauty. I have been following its progress for some time now and will be the first in-queue to get behind the wheels and be captivated when it reaches Bangalore. Big is big! The 2008 Auto Expo saw the launch of a new SUV from Chevrolet into the Indian market. Over the past two years, SUVs have gained a lot in popularity. From Tata’s Safari to Maruti Suzuki’s Grand Vitara or from Honda’s CR-V to Mitsubishi’s Pajero, almost every car manufacturer has one or more SUV models to boast of. Even the luxury brands haven’t left anything to imagination. BMW with its X3 and X5 models, Audi with Q7, Mercedes-Benz with M-Class and Volvo with the XC90 are a few examples.
Chevrolet has brought in the Captiva at a time when the competition in the SUV segment is really rough. With a price tag of around Rs. 18 lakh, the Captiva is pitted against popular models such as Honda CR-V, Ford Endeavour, Hyundai Tucson, Suzuki Grand Vitara, Mitsubishi Pajero and Nissan X-TRAIL. And those are just the models already present in the market. A lot of new SUV models are being considered for launch by many manufacturers and will arrive in the country soon. Hyundai has already showcased its new SUV - the Santa Fe at the Auto Expo and Volkswagen is eager to launch the Tiguan SUV.
Though loaded with a good array of features, the Captiva is priced a little too high at Rs. 18 Lakh. It’s more expensive than many of its competitors and is priced nearly equal to the very popular CR-V and Pajero. The Tata Safari with its good list of accessories and standard features and attractive price tag of Rs. 11 Lakh has lured many SUV buyers. GM hopes that the Captiva’s captivating looks, thoughtful interiors and new generation diesel engine will see it through. Labels: Auto-Expo, Chevrolet, General Motors, New launch, SUVs
MapmyIndia has tied up with General Motors to provide its navigation system as a standard accessory on all premium Chevrolet cars in India. The PND is a perfect fit for cars and can show the way to any destination across India. It allows safe and hassle-free driving. The driver doesn’t have to worry about being lost anywhere as the car can be tracked well through satellite-linked technology. The gadget determines the car’s location through 18 major cities and 55,000 towns and villages.
The device is not just about tracking and direction finding. It also entertains with movies and music playback on a large colour touch screen. It will be available for sale as a genuine GM accessory at all 75 GM dealerships soon. Labels: Car-Accessories, Chevrolet, General Motors
General Motors is having another go at the small car segment by introducing new variants for its hatchback model ‘Spark’. Hoping to ride on the popularity of Daewoo’s Matiz, General Motors (GM) had introduced the small car ‘Spark’ in the middle of 2007. The Spark retained most of Matiz’s exterior styling but had better features and improved handling compared to the Matiz. But the much-hyped model saw very slow sales initially and didn’t entirely live up to GM’s expectations.
Now GM plans to launch newer variants of the Spark. They are concentrating on the development of a second manufacturing plant at Talegaon in Maharashtra. New variants of the Spark will be produced here and will hit the roads later this year. We hope the new variants are available in more colours and with more interior space. It is good news for the car enthusiasts that after its successful venture into the small and mid-size car segment, General Motors is planning to foray into luxury car segment with iconic Cadillac. Other luxury brands, such as Mercedes, BMW and Audi have already made it big in the Indian luxury car segment. There is no reason for GM to lag behind them. The company plans to launch Cadillac in the middle of 2008. It could be priced at about Rs 40 lakh. The local manufacturing will begin only after the car receives a good response. But for now, the company will import completely built unit (CBU) from South Africa and England, the car comes with right hand driving in these countries. GM is likely to display Cadillac CTS model at the Delhi Auto Expo 2008. Cadillac’s entry will intensify the competition in already competitive luxury car market. Your NRI uncle’s son can tantalize you no more with his latest gadgets. You probably already have better ones! As the Indian economy is booming, value gap between the US dollar and the Indian rupee is narrowing. The influx of so many foreign car brands in such a short time is nothing short of revolutionary. American and European auto majors are making a beeline for Indian shores. But it’s not restricted to just the car makers. We hear Canada’s second-largest automotive component company Linamar Corp. is exploring opportunities in India and may set up a manufacturing facility here to supply powertrains and industrial components to the local market. This $2.4-billion company is an original equipment supplier to auto biggies like General Motors and Ford. It has 37 manufacturing centres in North America, Europe and Asia. This is how brain meets business, when General Motors Corp ( GM), sets up a new Collaborative Research Lab (CRL) with the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kharagpur to carry out research in areas of electronics, controls, and software. Not just business, the new collaboration shows a bit of academic interest too. These new partners will jointly develop a new post-graduate degree in the above mentioned fields. GM has promised Rs.5 Crore for research to be done in the next five years within the new lab, which will be co-managed by GM's Indian Science Lab and IIT Kharagpur. The country’s leading business daily quoted Bharati this morning. “The aim in setting up the lab is to carry out research projects of exploratory nature and to create necessary infrastructure and curriculum for master and Phd programmes as a means of bolstering development of talent required to address future challenges of the industry,” said Prakash Bharati, Director, GM's India Science Lab. As said in the previous blog, General Motors is finally getting on the right track. Committed, optimistic, and competitive in India. It seems as though the judges of JD Power Asia Pacific gave a quick inspiration to GM. The archetype swing in Indian automotive is about to happen. General Motors has opened the first car design studio in India. This week’s episode focuses totally on GM. This first car design studio has a capacity to employ 70 peoples by the end of this year. Also the main focus of GM will be on small car designing. Anyway, GM has caught my interest especially because of its commitment to small car manufacturing in India. It looks like it is deep into the importance of small cars and adding this new studio in Bangalore, General Motors now has a total of 11 such studios across the world. I am sure many of you are now waiting to hear about the product contributions from the Bangalore design studio. Speculations say by 2012 we can expect some hot little GM vehicles from Bangalore. This is surely a creative way to get people interested in Chevy designs. GM India touched its highest sales statistics yet, in India. Since General Motors introduced its vehicles to India, this is the first time the firm has enjoyed a profit with such high margins. General Motors cruises ahead of its competitors with the extremely affordable Chevy Spark and the value-for-money Aveo UV-A. GM has sold more than two times the units it sold last year in the same period. General Motors India for the first time beat Ford Motors India in the market share. With the festive season on in India, GM has cut down the price of Spark by over rupees 50,000/-, which is also one of the reasons for the auto major to enjoy boosting sales. Because the offer is available only for a limited period, no wonder people are rushing to GM dealers spread all over the country. If General Motors consider extending the offer for another few days there is no doubt that our pavements will be full of GM brands. People often think they are safer in an SUV than a Sedan or a hatchback. If you ask me I'll say that the Hummer is the safest and coolest SUV around. Agree? Sunil Shetty’s choice and a definite yes from all Indians who want a muscular and aggressive car that laughs at looks and speaks with performance! The Hummer is a South African SUV known for its ‘goes anywhere’ nature. It has a Vortec 3.7L engine that is astounding and makes off-roads simpler. Indian potholed roads will feel like butter on toast from inside this powerful animal. Hummer is on its way to India. General Motors recently announced that the Hummer H3 will launch in India sometime next year. However, GM is a little worried about the market possibilities. The general feeling is that the super premium brand vehicle will represent a niche market in India, but the current Indian market psychology leans towards small cars like the Chevy Spark. I say - come on GM, take a chance! We may wait for a while to get behind the wheels of a Hummer, but if you wait too long there are companies that will take your slice of the proverbial Indian auto market pie and the Hummer will be left high and dry! Let’s hope for a new growth in Track car productions in India in the coming years. Caparo the company known for the T1 track car is developing a new small car for India. The UK based Caparo’s ‘city car’ would be licensed for production to other manufacturers in the local market in India. As global auto makers like Toyota, Honda, and General Motors have announced plans to launch a compact car in India; we can hope that one of these MNCs will franchise Caparo's city car for production in the Indian local market. Learning from manufacturers like Renault, Volkswagen, Volvo, and Fiat, Caparo too sees the value in an Indian foray with a partner to rationalize investments and get a head start for production, sales, & service. Caparo is in talks with multiple potential automakers for a possible alliance in India. The car that is under development in Caparo’s Chennai factory will find a new space in the heart of the hard core car racing enthusiasts. This T1 racing car is a high performance two-seater designed with the style and function that resembles a Formula One race car. T1 offers a lightweight body and chassis made out of advanced composite materials. The T1 will be showcased in India in Auto Expo 2008. Let’s wait till the show to experience the craftsmanship of Caparo.
