Honda Indycar Delta wingWe have come across many fictitious gadgets or technology much ahead of its time that is shown in movies being brought out to suit our everyday needs. For example, we have seen Bond movies which has helped the evolution of many gadgets that we see around, like that of a jet pack, GPS and so on.

Well, if you are a follower and a fan of the batman series, you might be familiar with Batman’s car Batmobile. It has this huge wing which again aides its agility and again transforms this agility into speed. This again comes straight from the aircrafts which uses these wings.

In due course of time future Formula One cars also might be using these wings called Delta Wing. Delta Wings are being seriously considered as the model for a new Indaycar Formula starting in 2012.

If we go by the reports of “The Sun”, the world’s second most important single-seater series is desperate for a unique and radical new look to reinvigorate the racing, attract new fans and win back lost supporters.

Delta Wing has the support of most Indycar teams, including the Chip Ganassi Racing squad of Britain’s reigning champion Dario Franchitti. If things just go right you might see these Delta Wings in the Formula One cars in future.

The super-streamlined car, which has enclosed wheels and no aerodynamic appendages, will be capable of topping 235mph at the Indianapolis 500. Its reduced drag and light weight means it will only need a small four-cylinder 300 horsepower engine to propel it to such speeds, making it leaner and greener than the current conventional Indycars.

Yet, safety will be enhanced as the risk of cars getting airborne through interlocking wheels will be reduced. Overtaking should be easier as racers will not be trapped by turbulence caused by the wings of the car in front.

The biggest resistance in an Indycar is the drag of the exposed wheels, Delta Wing designer Ben Bowlby said. At Indianapolis, 54 per cent of the drag is from the wheels. By fairing them there is a huge efficiency improvement and today’s car is an aerodynamic brick with a huge engine that spends its life burning fuel and components,” he opined.

“It just shows how inefficient today’s cars are – and that’s not surprising because the regulations have mandated inefficiency for decades,” he added. “If this car had 500 horsepower, it would run 270mph around Indy,” he added.

For the first time in the history of Formula One racing, a participant team has put its wares up for sale. So far, Formula One fans could flaunt their love for the game through merchandise like T-shirts, Caps, Key chains, and other kinds of apparel. Now Toyota Motors has put up a lot of high tech parts from its past racing cars for sale.

Toyota has been participating in F1 races for over three decades. The Toyota Motorsports team regularly takes part in Formula One Race, NASCAR, IndyCar, ChampCar, Sports car racing, and other car rallies.

The high tech auto parts for sales include carbon fiber wings, brakes, light alloy wheels, and several other parts. They are all marketed through a special Toyota website. The auto parts costs from Rs 13,000 to Rs 3,34,000. The parts available at the cheaper end are usually wheels, brake discs, and suspension parts at prices starting from Rs 15,000. The front and the rear wing assemblies are available at prices between Rs 54,000 to Rs 1,52,000.

Toyota is also offering complete rear wing, engine cover, and the underbody section which is virtually half the car. These are sold at prices starting from Rs 3,34,000 – currently available only on first come first serve basis.

This will be the biggest bonanza for motorsports fans across the world. No other company including Formula One staples like McLaren, Ferrari, BMW, Honda, and Mercedes have attempted this kind of campaign yet. These companies have always sobered the F1 technologies to meet the needs of production cars. Toyota has gone where no other F1 team has gone before- reaching the people through their F1 technologies.

The sale of F1 car parts comes as no surprise to many Toyota enthusiasts as Toyota recently pulled away its Fuji Speedway race track from the Japanese Grand Prix and is considering closing down all its F1 circuits completely.
