Mitsubishi ASXMitsubishi Motors Corporation (MMC) will premiere its Mitsubishi ASX all-new compact crossover from Tuesday March 2, 2010 to Sunday March 14, 2010 at the 80th Geneva International Motor Show held at the Geneva Palexpo in Switzerland.

Adapting Mitsubishi’s jet-fighter-inspired front end design, the ASX is the European-spec version of the Japan-only RVR, which goes on sale from February 2010. The ASX Compact Crossover will seat five adults and will be released across Europe in stages from late spring 2010, aimed at increasing the brand’s passenger car fleet in the region, following in the footsteps of the larger and recently redesigned Outlander mid-size crossover.

The European-spec version will be fitted with an all-new Euro 5-compliant 1,8-litre turbocharged direct-injection diesel engine, coupled with a six-speed manual transmission. Incorporating “Automatic Stop & Go” technology, this combination promises to provide high environmental efficiency. Considering the CUV's small size and presumably light weight, that combo should yield impressive results at European pumps. The Mitsubishi ASX price will be announced at a later date.

Considering the recent market globalisation concept followed by many International major car makers here in India, and the demand for luxury cars here, we might soon see the Mitsubishi ASX also reach the Indian shores.

A slew of cars with diesel engine are on the way to enter the Indian car market. Car makers such as Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Hyundai and Maruti Suzuki are planning to introduce diesel engine cars to the domestic market.

There has been a change in the outlook of Indian car buyers. The new generation of car buyers do not think of the high maintenance cost and premium pricing while considering to opt for a diesel engine car. In fact, these are the problems of yesterdays and today with technology getting superior, fuel efficient and more environment-friendly, the new generation of car buyers pick up diesel cars with no headache.

Mercedes-Benz is planning to bring in the new E-Class in diesel, while its arch-rival BMW is all set to roll out diesel models in the upcoming Delhi Auto Expo and Hyundai gearing up to launch a diesel Sonata. Then, we have India’s number one car maker Maruti Suzuki planning to launch diesel variant of the SX4. As a matter of fact, luxury car makers like BMW, Mercedes and Audi sell more diesel variants than their petrol counterparts. The Honda CR-V was ruling the SUV segment till the Toyota Fortuner was launch. The CR-V has a petrol engine while the Fortuner comes with a diesel engine.

Toyota sells more than 99 per cent of diesel variants of its cars. Toyota feels that premium car buyers need higher torque and power and that can be developed much better through advanced diesel technology.

Maruti Suzuki Swift and the DZire are selling 65 per cent diesel variants and others like Tata Motors, Mahindra & Mahindra, General Motors, Hyundai and Ford are stepping up production of the diesel models. Tata Motors’ Indica and Indigo, Mahindra’s Logan, General Motors Optra, Cruze and Hyundai’s Verna are seeing an increase in diesel model sales in the recent months.

Car makers have begun scaling up the production of diesel variants in recent months. The reason behind is a much advanced diesel technology which is forcing car manufacturers to start looking at alternative solutions. Moreover, premium car buyers travel long distances, so fuel economy plays an important role. With diesel cost being lower than petrol, the payback is quicker.

It seems that the heart of Indians does skip a beat when it comes to diesel cars. Riding on this sentiment of Indians is the German sportscar major, Porsche.

Porsche which is encouraged by the rocking response to Porsche Cayenne diesel, is all set to bring in the whole range of engine options to the Indian automobile market with a big emphasis on diesel.

With the fast growing fan base for the Porsche brand in India, Porsche plans to boost its diesel portfolio with diesel version of its Panamera sedan. It will also expand its overall portfolio of cars by launching super fast cars such as the new 911 Turbo and 911 GT3 RS by next year. On the anvil are hybrid and electric versions as well. Porsche seems to be in the right track of reading the changing moods of Indians car enthusiasts.

The flagship SUV from Porsche, Porsche Cayanne, has been well received across the world in its diesel avatar. Porsche Cayenne Diesel has also been a hot favourite of the Indian luxury SUV lovers as it is very popular in India.

And while all this happens, the company would have spread out to six different cities from two at present. But the question is whether such a wider product portfolio required from a company who sells only 150-200 cars a year. And we ask why not?
Porsche currently is facing increasing competition from Audi and Lamborghini, which only proves a point that it is sane of Porsche to bring in the whole spectrum of products.

The market for these luxury vehicles is relatively small at the moment, but in a longer run Porsche will certainly yield its benefits of bringing in the entire product portfolio.

Right now, over 70 per cent of cars sold by Porsche are SUV's and limited volumes coming from the sports car portfolio. With the new four door Porsche Panamera, the company is hoping the additional volumes kick-in.

For now, despite the downturn the company is eying 20 per cent growth this calendar year but with a bigger product portfolio, more engine options and a wider reach, it is hoping to double the growth rate in 2010.
