Most of the time, the whole excitement of driving a new car is lost as the design traits of the car make you feel you are a 'misfit' for you new car. But this feeling is now going to be in history books soon because your dream machine will now be designed for you only!
You will soon be entitled to have legroom and the headroom as well as seat specifications as per your needs. Bearing this in mind, Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI) has started a study to come up with India-specific anthropometric data (information resulting from scientific study of measurements of the human body) for the country's driving population. The project started in May 2009 and will be completed by September 2010.
According to ARAI, the present settings in the automobiles are not suitable for Indians even as leg space, headroom, view of bonnet from seat doesn't match Indian sizes.
The end result of this data will determine dimensions for height of the seat, legroom, headroom, foot room and pedal size, and can be pivotal in reducing fatigue and enhancing efficiency. Interestingly, such a data was never made available for India before.
The manufacturers in India presently do not have a set standard and hence these specifications are done on judgement or on customer feedback.
This is one of the fundamental data generation works taken up by Passive Safety Lab (PSL) of ARAI and is funded by the Ministry of Heavy Industries. Under this project, 5,000 Indian car buyers in the age group of 18 and 60 years are taken whose physical attributes will be measured and dimensions drawn. The anthropometric data includes height, weight and key physical specifications of users, which are further analysed to develop a standard.
In fact, ARAI has already taken 600 measurements from western India and have installed a scanning machine in Gurgaon for gathering measurements from northern region. The measurements will be taken from five zones in the country including north, south, west, east and central zones. Once the data is collected, a statistical analysis will be done with the help of the statistics department of the University of Pune.
Such data will facilitate car manufacturing companies to further optimise their designs to suit local anthropometry, making driving more comfortable for the local population. The data will help various government bodies involved in formulating regulations to base their standards from practical data. Besides benefiting the Indian automobile industry, the measurements will come in hand in numerous other applications namely, apparel industry, textiles, shoe makers, helmet manufacturers among others. Car trend in India has undergone drastic changes. Earlier people were only looking for various options and convenient car features before planning to buy a new car. However, today owning a car has become a status symbol and people not only look for cars with style, rich features and comfort but now they want more and more… Moreover, the latest car craze is having an attractive and unique registration numbers. The fashion of auctioning premium vehicle registration numbers is becoming popular in India. People are ready to flow out the money just to get the fancy car registration numbers. Recently, the Punjab state transport held an auction of a unique series of car registration numbers and it got an incredible response and large sum of revenue too. Some of the interesting registration numbers sold with high price tags: 0001 number sold for Rs 70,000, 0002 went for Rs 80,000 and 0005 made up with for Rs 55,000. The number that earned the maximum price to the transport department was the PB-11-AK-47, that carried an attractive price tag of Rs. 2.68 lakh and this heavily priced registration number was sold to a farmer from Ropar, as the number AK-47 attracted him. Looks like, this farmer friend is very much fascinated with weapons. But is it necessary or worth spending so much on a registration number? Any ways… every individual carries some desire and this is one of its kinds! Labels: Car Craze, Car Registration, Car trend, Car-features

With the increasing number of car accidents, the demand for advanced safety features is increasing. Currently, many innovative features have come up in the car industry to ensure both the driver and car safety. Technologies like airbags, anti-lock brakes, electronic sensors, crash testing, adaptive headlights, tyre pressure monitoring, rearview camera, and adaptive cruise control have reduced the number of road accidents. Inspite of so many futuristic technologies, everyday the top headlines of the newspaper dictates one or more number of fatalities due to car accidents. Why are the numbers not reduced? What’s the use of safety technologies if these are not successful in preventing accidents? Many similar questions are still unanswered. Some say this is because of reckless driving but is that true? Nothing can be commented on reckless driving but what if the accident occurs due to fatigue and drowsiness. Some cases have been heard where the crashes occurs just because the driver is beset by fatigue or some kind of drowsiness. Some drivers, who feel that fatigue is setting in, stop their cars and others who don’t realize it drive on towards a crash. In such cases, what a driver should do? Whether we may think over it or not but the German luxury car manufacturer, Mercedes-Benz has given a deep thought to it. To combat the issue of drowsiness while driving, Mercedes is working on the lifesaving technological feature, termed as Attention Assist. This innovative safety technology is a simple driver support system which will monitor the linear and lateral motion of the car with respect to the steering inputs and brake pressure. Attention Assist will alert the driver at different levels of fatigue and drowsiness. In case of a risk, this feature will display a warning message, "Attention Assist. Break!” on the instrument panel. This message will be immediately followed by a warning sound that will compel the driver to stop the car and take a rest. This innovative safety feature is on its way and is expected to enter the industry by 2009. Labels: Car-features, Car-Safety, Car-Technology

If you thought that plastic was only for the interior of a car, think again. In the future, almost all of the car could be made of plastic except the really essential components like the engine. That would probably have to remain in metal casings. Car manufacturers have been experimenting with polycarbonates and carbon fibre. Not only are these materials lightweight, they also have strength and durability. In fact, the Hyundai QarmaQ car model is believed to have been made using recycled PET bottles. The car boasts of 30 new features all made from plastic. It looks more stylish than ever before. Labels: Car-features, Hyundai
