Auto markers are really behind the Indian wallet. This time, it’s not their latest automobiles that they are introducing to India; they are all geared up to lure Indian customers with their merchandise.

Ford Motor Company is planning to sprinkle its best selling perfume in the India market. And this is just the start of a merchandising drive by the legendary American carmaker. It also has its line of apparels, toys and car accessories in the pipeline.

Iconic Harley-Davidson Motor Company is going to foray in the Indian automotive world by the end of 2009. Apart from its bikes, the company will launch its range of merchandise. The cult motorcycle manufacturer offers jackets, coffee mugs, lighters, boots, pillow covers and in some cases even Spider Man tees for kids. Nearly 15-20 per cent of its revenue comes from its merchandise.

It’s just not the global auto manufacturers who are working on a merchandising plan. Our desi auto makers are also in the race. Bajaj Auto, which is all set to launch a low-cost car with Nissan-Renault, is working on its merchandising strategy. Soon, we will see Bajaj Auto’s merchandise line in their showrooms. Next to jump on the merchandise bandwagon is none other than Royal Enfield, the Indian equivalent of Harley-Davidson.

Ferrari already sells its merchandise in India. Its products include perfume, toys, watch among many others. We also have merchandise from car giants like Porsche, Lamborghini and Jaguar.

In a recent study on tyres, it has been found out that tyre that uses trees as its raw materials for its production can perform better to save on fuel and energy and cost less. So it is apprehended that in future, almost all the car tyres will be made from trees: one of the first basic changes to come around in a long time.

Researchers at Oregon State University in US found the potential of microcrystalline cellulose to partially replace silica as reinforcing filler in the manufacture of rubber tyres. Microcrystalline cellulose is a product that can be derived from almost any type of plant fibers.

The study also suggested that this approach can decrease the energy required to produce a tyre, reduce costs and better resist heat buildup. A product of this kind will have comparable traction on cold or wet pavement, be just as strong, and provide even higher fuel efficiency than traditional tyres in hot weather.

Cellulose fiber has been used for some time as reinforcement in some types of rubber and automotive parts and accessories such as belts, hoses and insulation; but never in tyres, where the preferred fillers are carbon black and silica. Carbon black, however, is made from increasingly expensive oil, and the processing of silica is energy-intensive. Both products are very dense and reduce the fuel efficiency of a car.

In this study, the researchers replaced up to about 12 per scent of the silica used in conventional tyre manufacture. This decreased the amount of energy needed to compound the rubber composite, improved the heat resistance of the product and retained tensile strength.

More research is needed to confirm the long-term durability of tyres made with partial replacement of silica.

It's good to know that Maruti is heading towards green technologies at an incredible pace. Wearing a green conscience, the company has introduced green cabs in India. Presently, these cabs will only be seen on the roads of Andhra Pradesh.

What is even more impressive is that this new initiative is started with Maruti's small car which is an epic model of Maruti as well as Indian automotive industry. Yes, the company has launched the green cabs for urban motoring on the M800 AC Duo.

Powered by dual fuels and being factory fitted, the car is definitely economical and safe compared to other taxis. But would it be successful in the Indian market, where cabs are considered to be spacious with excellent leg room, shoulder room, and cabin space for the comfort of passengers and tourists.

Though, the cabs interiors are spruced up with functional and luxurious car accessories along with the advanced GPRS (General Packet Radio Service) system linked to the call centre for monitoring car's movement. But yet, the space factor places a big question on the small yet efficient Maruti 800.

Police rounded up a gang of 15 people involved in making fake cars in Rome, Italy. They were involved in making fake blood red Ferrari cars with counterfeit parts and few original parts. They sold the cars at a fraction to the cost of the original. Change the name of the car and country and you can find that it is a very Indian-type crime news.

Many garages are known to make cars with some fake and some original parts. They also make fake papers that look real. But if they are selling it at really low prices, one can be sure that it is a car without the manufacturers stamp. When we drive in cars, our complete safety depends on the manufacturing of the car. A glitch in the brakes or engine could prove disastrous to users.

People looking for cheap used cars must make sure that the cars are certified by authorized dealers or workshops.

Get into any modern luxury car and the first thing that catches the eye is the array of buttons on the dash. Even the steering wheel gets paddle shifters and audio controls. Added to this, there are cars with a GPS facility and an LCD screen.

Get into any Merc or BMW and be amazed by the number of functions being packed into the small space. It will require the genius of a race car driver or a professional mechanic to actually understand the functions of all the buttons. A person will need to study the car manual for over a week to understand the various technological marvels that a luxury car comes with.

Only the cockpit alone of a luxury car like the Audi A8, BMW 7 Series, and Mercedes S-Class could cost up to $20,000 to $30,000 (Rs. 8 to 12 Lakh). The question, however, is why so many gadgets when most of these luxury cars are driven by chauffeurs? Wouldn’t it be better to concentrate more on the rear seat comforts of a luxury car? Maybe luxury car makers should concentrate more on rear comfort and less on cockpit confusion!

I never knew that you can convert a car part into a musical instrument. Don’t be amazed, I recently came across news that Ford is exploring with innovative ideas as a part of promotion and that is why they converted the part of the new Ford Focus into musical instruments. Two creative designers from the US were the brains behind this mechanical musical instrument.

They created musical instrument like Door Harp, Clutch Guitar, and Fender Bass using car accessories. The ad campaign will hit viewers by performing a stage show using this unique instrument. Isn’t it a fabulous way of promotion? Can we expect Indian car makers to come up with this kind of promotion? I doubt. Maybe not this much but Indian car makers can definitely come up with creative ideas. I hope they try.

The value of stolen vehicles crossed the Rs 1,000 Crore mark in 2007 according to a study made by the National Crime Records Bureau based in Delhi and passenger cars formed a major chunk of it. It was alarming to note that cars that come fitted with high-end audio equipment and expensive accessories score pathetically low on security.

In the Indian car market, only premium & luxury cars come fitted with the latest anti-theft devices and the lesser cars are more prone to theft. These anti-theft devices should be made mandatory for all cars. Maruti was the first Indian company to offer the iCATs (Intelligent Computerized Anti-Theft System) as an option on all its models.

Other car manufacturers should take a cue from Maruti and give away anti-theft devices with all their cars instead of leaving the option open to the car buyer. As there are nearly 30 launches lined up for the upcoming auto expo, it would be best if all small car manufacturers took note of this. The government should make it mandatory for all cars to be equipped with anti-theft mechanisms.

Alloy wheels, which are usually festooned to give a rich look, today is just one of the types of car accessory that rules the road. In the beginning alloy wheels were designed keeping in mind racing cars, because they tend to decrease unsprung mass so that the suspension can respond quicker to the surface of the road, keeping the car steadier. They come with different tints that without any doubt increase a car's grandeur. Flattered by cars owned by celebrities, modern folk get them introduced in their own cars in order for their vehicle to stand out in a crowd. Alloy wheels are available in the market in a variety of different designs to suit the structure and outlook of almost any modern-designed car.

Some of the higher end models in India, such as the Maruti SX4, come with alloy wheels as a standard feature. Alloy Wheels conduct heat efficiently than the usual steel wheels, dispelling heat from the brakes competently and thus reducing the chances of brake failure in a crisis situation.

Replacing standard steel wheels with alloy wheels is known as "Aftermarket Wheels". Usually a part of an alloy wheel is steel combined with aluminium, magnesium, or other light-weight metals. There are many companies including "Aura" and "Neo" that exclusively market alloy wheels in India and the major foreign brands include Hijoin, League, and SM. Silver, gold, and hyper-crome finish wheels are in great demand in today's market.

Though not standard on many economy cars, because of the heavy pricing, alloy wheels are the most sought-after accessory. These eye-catching wheels start from Rupees 10,000 in the Indian market. Alloy wheels compared to the ordinary steel wheels are much lighter, more attractive and enhance the car price during a resale. The darker side is that they are expensive, hard to process, and prone to corrosion if the shielding coat comes off.

Now, decked in your car, these accessories need some extra care to look fresh and new. Alloy wheels require a certain deal of wheel maintenance, because they are usually prone to rust and dust and should be washed regularly with mild soap water to keep it free from soil and rust to retain their bright and gleaming stance.
