Fiat India plans to launch its first compressed natural gas (CNG-run car for the domestic market in the April-June quarter of 2010. Though Fiat India has been tight lipped on the models it plans to come out with CNG, we are quite sure that Fiat Grande Punto is being seriously considered for the role and Punto would have a fuel mix comprising of CNG and petrol. CNG is ultimately going to be a fuel for most commercial applications, Fiat officials opine, explaining the rationale behind the move. Though Fiat has LPG models in its kitty, they clearly stand by CNG as it is a less expensive fuel option of the duo and the better fuel of the two. This clearly sends across the message that Fiat is not lagging behind when it comes to vehicles running on more viable fuel options. FIAL is a 50:50 joint venture between Fiat Group Automobiles SpA and Tata Motors. Incorporated in 1997, the company has its production unit located in Ranjangaon in Pune, Maharashtra. The unit has a capacity of two lakh cars, three lakh engines and an equivalent number of parts and accessories. Apart from Fiat cars, the facility will produce Tata passenger and next generation cars with an investment exceeding 650 million euro. Apart from this, Fiat India also seems to busy in developing a India-Specific small car in Turin, Italy, that would be positioned between the A and the B segment and will be launched in 2011. The one reason why not many CNG cars are available in the Indian car market is that there aren’t many fuel stations in the country where CNG is available. Customer-friendly car makers of the country who generally think about the likes and comforts of their customers will abandon the thought of making CNG variants optional to the customers as they don’t want their customers to wander around for filling their fuel or even get stuck without enough fuel. The car customers of the country favours the launch of cars fitted with CNG, as it is more durable and comes with a guarantee from the company, rather than the ones that is fitted outside, which will not have any guarantee from the car maker. Toyota is launching a new variant of its successful model Corolla Altis, a CNG variant. The new model is expected to hit the Indian roads at the right time, in the next month, during the festival season. The Altis Corolla CNG will have tank capacity of 14kg and Sequential Injection system, along with its own ECU, which gives the car supreme economy by not sacrificing on performance. With only a single competent in the segment, Chevrolet Optra CNG, the Toyota Corolla Altis will have a smooth sale in the Indian car market. Corolla Altis is the second model from Toyota, after Innova, which comes in a CNG version. It feels like Toyota knows the way out from the situation in the country where there is a lack of CNG stations, and it is simply more and more CNG versions of cars, which will force the launch of more CNG station due to the increase in demand. You don't have to sport that 'Did I just see that' look on your face when you see a premium sedan car running on cheaper gas fuels like CNG and LPG, because that is what would be happening henceforth. These low cost fuels, forte of the compact cars like M800, Chevrolet Spark and Hyundai Santro, soon would be used by the premium sedan cars like Toyota Corolla, Maruti SX4, Skoda Octavia and Chevrolet Aveo. It is said that these fuels slash running cost by half. It is expected that Skoda Auto, which has already launched the CNG versions of Octavia in Spain and other European markets is likely to introduce the same in India soon. Skoda calls it the Greenline technology as it uses 10 percent less fuel than other traditional 1.9 TDI models. It has been learnt that Toyota Kirloskar Motors, the Indian subsidiary of the world’s premier auto manufacturer Toyota Motors, is testing Corolla for the CNG version. Also General Motors is planning on bringing out the CNG version of its sedan Chevrolet Aveo. These auto manufacturers were amazed to see sales of Hyundai Accent CNG zooming past its petrol sibling. It has helped revive the model which was on the brink of extinction in India. Sales have picked up in cities where CNG is available, such as in Delhi, Mumbai, and Ahmedabad. Apart from this, car manufacturers are also worried that sales of mid-size cars have declined drastically. They expect car sales to climb up with the cheaper fuel versions. Besides focusing on CNG and LPG versions, they have also been following up on alternative fuels too. Besides, the central government has stressed on the need of hybrid for eco-friendly for transportation during the Common Wealth Games in Ne Delhi in 2011.
