BMW Active 7 series Hybrid
The ongoing Frankfurt Motor Show will showcase the different ventures the car manufacturers have been working over the past years. The German automaker BMW, together with the other auto majors such as Mercedes-Benz, Suzuki, Hyundai, will showcase its best efforts in the show.

The BMW Active Hybrid X6 and Active Hybrid 7, BMW X1, and the BMW 5 Series GT that has been empowered to woo the audience will debut in the Frankfurt Motor Show. As the name suggests, the BMW Active Hybrid X6 and Active Hybrid 7 will be eco-friendly models.

The elegantly designed hybrid cars are an epitome of their respective series. Looks apart, it is the heart of these cars that matter the most and that’s why both the cars will be powered by 4.4-litre twin turbo V8 motor. While the X6 will feature two electric motors and a 7-speed CVT transmission the 7 has a single electric motor and an 8-speed automatic transmission.

The most bizarre BMW that has been manufactured in the near past and one can name the BMW 5 Series GT without a second thought an MPV, an executive car or even an estate car, because it fits into all these categories. The car is a perfect combination of the X6, 7, and the 5 series. And the car will be available in three options namely 530d, 5351, and 550i.

Another model from BMW, BMW X1, the mini x, will also be showcased at the Frankfurt Motor Show. The X1 built based on the 3 Series foundation will be available in two options such as the one with a rear wheel drive, known as sDrive, and an all wheel drive, xDrive.

It will take another one or two years before most of the models be available to common man, but it is a true pleasure to see these cars showcased as they are a glimpse to the future of the auto industry.

With the festive season on the threshold, most of the car makers in India are increasing their production by recruiting a batch of new employees. But some of the car makers are yet to up their production scale. Many car makers are now rolling out more cars than their monthly average, expecting immense sales in the months of September and October.

But luxury car makers like BMW India and Mercedes-Benz India manufactured less cars last month compared to the same month last year. In fact, BMW's production decreased by 8 per cent to 224 units while Mercedes-Benz made almost 80 per cent less cars at just 91 units in August. Of late, we have seen that BMW has edged out Mercedes-Benz which has been ruling the luxury car segment in India. It has been revealed that Mercedes-Benz has been considering on commercial vehicle business to generate growth and also is busy renovating the E-Class, which is the company’s biggest selling model in India.

Toyota Kirloskar Motor, the Indian arm of Toyota Motor Corporation, manufactured 10.67 per cent less at just 4,831 units in August in spite of getting very good order bookings for the Fortuner. SkodaAuto India reported almost halving of production in comparison with August 2008. The most evident reason for this could be the sales of the Fabia continue to remain below expectations since its launch in January 2008. The maker of the mighty Ambassador, the Lancer, the Cedia and the Outlander in India, Hindustan Motors, produced only 716 cars which show a decline of over 2 per cent.

Moreover, General Motors with its Chevrolet brand also made almost 5 per cent less cars at 5,109 units last month. We have Mahindra Renault India, which makes the mid-size sedan Logan, has manufactured only a fraction of what it did last year because of the car's low sales. It made only 785 units in August, a decline of almost 38 per cent. But, Tata Motors showed a modest 3.41 per cent increase in its overall production of Commercial Vehicles (CVs) and passenger vehicles.

However, the overall production of vehicles, showed a healthy growth of 15.27 per cent at 11,33,839 units last month. On the sales front, the good run continued for passenger cars with domestic sales growing a healthy 25.59 per cent at 1,20,669 units.

The Indian car industry has been witnessing a boom during the festive season over the ages. Car makers generally ramp their production this time of the year to meet the demands of the customers. The Indian car market is growing steadily and in near future it will surely knock out China and emerge as the largest car market in the world.

Research has been going on a new engineering philosophy called ‘EfficientDynamics’. BMWis the pioneer to this concept. The German luxury car manufacturer has been advocating on the reduction of emissions and fuel consumption for its product development strategy.

The new ‘EfficientDynamics’ concept involves around the quest for an enhanced and athletic driving experience while lowering the fuel consumption and carbon dioxide emissions at the same time.

BMW is in the making of its new concept car called the Vision. The BMW Vision car is a 2+2 seater that runs on plug-in hybrid technology. This concept car has the performance of a BMW M-series and a decent fuel efficiency and emission management that exceeds even the current levels achieved by the latest small cars. This car can prove that its EfficientDynamics objectives are compatible with a sports car.

This extra-ordinary concept car will make its world debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show later this month. The BMW Vision is driven by a 1.5-litre three-cylinder turbo diesel engine and twin electric motors, one on each axle, powered by a lithium-polymer battery, with all three units working together under supervision from an advanced energy management system.

The fuel engine can churn out a total power output of 356bhp. But when the car is driven on battery fuel, the Vision EfficientDynamics could then be driven on all the four wheels and results in minimum power loss and harmonious transmission of power are available under all conditions.

The car can accelerate from static to 100km/h in five seconds, has an electronically limited top speed of 248km/h and still manages to achieve an astonishing 27.77km/l of fuel efficiency, and a very low overall CO2 emissions rating of 50gm/km.

Running on diesel alone, the BMW Vision EfficientDynamics has a range of about 650km and can go for another 50km on electric power alone.

At present we have no idea as when the BMW Vision car will go into production. But we promise you to keep you updated.

More news in the pipeline for BMW fans!

German luxury car maker BMW is planning to introduce two more cars in India by the end of this year. Yes, two cars, the BMW Z4 and the X1, the first Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV) in the compact class from BMW.

The BMW Z4 is a replacement of the BMW Z3 and was first produced in 2002. This car is available in two versions viz., convertible and coupe. The two-door Z4 will be available in the sDrive 30i trim.

The 3.0-L In-line-6 engine has the capacity to churn out 258 bhp which surely takes driving into the next level. The car can speed up to a top speed of 250 km/h and can accelerate 0-100 km in just 5.8 seconds.

The BMW Z4 has almost done with the official registration process and other formalities in India before the grand launch that should happen anytime by Diwali this year.

The latest SUV from BMW, the X1 is expected in another six months. The X1 is the smallest in the Sports Activity Vehicles (SAVs) segment. It is placed as an alternative to BMW’s best seller 3-Series.

The X1 should carry a price tag between Rs 29-32 Lakh. Currently BMW sells its BMW X6 which also is a Sports Activity Vehicle in India.

The BMW X1 will be available in two engine options in India. The X1 xdrive1.8d engine will churn out a horsepower of 143 bhp while the X1 xdrive1.8i engine will give around 140 bhp. Though the X1 is an AWD, it is tuned for road-biased driving and is not much fun for off-road driving.

New Mercedes-Benz E-Class Car
Mercedes-Benz has slipped down from the competition as the going for the brand in India seems tough with BMW already surpassing it as a new market leader in its class.

The growing sales of BMW have really put this luxury carmaker into deep thought of how to stand on par with it. Mercedes-Benz has been showing a decline in sales for the past few months while the sales of BMW is shooting high and has a whole range of new cars that will be launched by the company in the next few months.

Currently in the number two position, Mercedes-Benz has high hopes set on its upcoming model, W1212 also aptly called as the new E-class which is a ninth generation car. Having had launched a new M-class model in the country this year; the E-Class model is expected to hit the Indian roads by the end of September this year and will share its looks with its predecessor W1210.

Both the diesel and petrol variant of the car will be available, but the diesel variant will follow the petrol variant only by the end of the year. And the company really needs to speed up on this as the diesel variants are gaining more popularity than the petrol engine cars.

The petrol version of the car will be powered by 3.5 liter 24valve V6 direct injection gas engine delivering a power of 292 bhp. And the diesel version of the car will have a 320CDi engine.

As of now, neither the price nor any other specifications of the car is available.

New Mini CarThe Mini will be celebrating its fiftieth birthday tomorrow.

The iconic car has been the witness of a world hit by oil scarcity, problems faced by car industry and many more. It has seen a series of ownership changes. In spite of all the happenings, the Mini still stands upright to tell us the unfortunate tale of its original maker British Leyland.

The company first got nationalized and then privatized and then got demerged, was sold again and before it went bust finally.

In 1968 the Labour government engineered the merger of British Motor Corporation with Leyland and was nationalized in 1975. In the 1980s, Jaguar dominated the stock market and the rest of British Leyland had been sold to British Aerospace which was resold to BMW in 1994. BMW sold the company to the Phoenix Four and MG Rover and the company broke in the subsequent year.

The Mini is a front-wheel drive car with sideways-mounted engine, small wheels and external hinges. It was launched as the Austin Seven in 1959. It was sold as the Morris Mini-Minor, adapting the marque of its decade-old Morris Minor. After a decade it officially became the Mini.

The Mini personified the Swinging Sixties. It has the credit of winning three Monte Carlo rallies and was a favourite among the popstars. The Mini itself became a film star in The Italian Job.

While the Mini was shining, the British motor industry faded. The Mini carried a price tag of £500 without heaters, mirrors, sun-visors or radios. In those days, British cars had wind-up handles and the Mini still had sliding panes, where as most of the foreign cars had electric windows.

The Mini has won many awards over the years. The most notable ones are the "Car of the Century" by the Autocar magazine in 1995, "Number One Classic Car of All Time" by Classic & Sports Car magazine in 1996 and "European Car of the Century" in a worldwide Internet poll run by the prestigious Global Automotive Elections Foundation in 1999. The Mini managed second place, behind the Model T Ford, for "Global Car of the Century" in that same poll.

Around 5.39 million units of the Mini were sold over forty years making it Britain's most popular car. The last old Mini was manufactured in October 2000. But there are still thousands of these cars on the road, with the remaining pre-1980s versions being firmly established as collectors' items.

BMW ActiveHybrid X6
The 2010 BMW ActiveHybrid X6 is bundled with technologies. Read on to unfold the features of the new, technology driven car that has it all to boost the future outlook on cars.

The difference between the conventional BMW X6 and the ActiveHybrid X6 is that the ActiveHybrid car will have the twin advantage of the X6 concept and two-mode hybrid version. The new BMW drivetrain integrates power inventor, batteries and electronic system into the transmission.

Being already familiar with the ActiveHybrid X7, it is time to get used to the new member in the family, ActiveHybrid X6. The production of the car has already begun and it will be showcased in the coming month at the Frankfurt Motor Show alongside the ActiveHybrid X7.

BMW was rendered help from General Motors and Daimler Chrysler that co-developed the two-mode hybrid system. The transmission of this hybrid system is based on the ECVT electrical continuously variable transmission and the two modes, one for low and the other for high speeds also has fixed transmission ratio.

Apart from the technicalities, the ActiveHybrid X6 can be distinguished from the regular X6 as light blue paint scheme, unique badging and the 21” wheels gives it a different and distinct face.

The Active Hybrid X6 holds the credit of the world's first Sports Activity Coupe which offers a full hybrid drive. A nickel-metal hydrid (NiMH) battery pack provides energy for the electric motors of ActiveHybrid X6. While in the electricity only mode, the ActiveHybrid X6 can run up to a speed of 60km/h.

All of this with an improved fuel efficiency of upto 20% compared to the other non-hybrid cars.

New Jaguar XKR Cars in IndiaLuxury carmaker BMW is hovering on to revive the 3-Series, the company’s biggest-selling model. The new 3-Series is expected to make its appearance at the 2011 Paris motor show.

The reintroduction of the 3-Series car was speculated as a result of the ongoing eco-friendly buzz. The new car will deliver excellent aerodynamics, with a drag coefficient of only Cd figure 0.24.

The 2011 3-Series will come with turbocharged three-cylinder engine in petrol and diesel options and will deliver 150bhp. The petrol version will be cheaper compared to the diesel as it does not have the need for emissions kit demanded by a Euro 6-compliant diesel engine.

A remarkable 40 per cent of overall air resistance of the 3-Series will come from the shape and size of the car. And BWM has to meditate on the remaining 60 per cent.
BMW’s will retain its customary front-engined with rear-drive design. BMW has also to render on the lightweight three-cylinder engines which will demand very specific suspension settings.

The 2016 BMW 3-Series are anticipated to be the first BMW to be fitted with a new type of heating system. This version is expected to trap heat from the exhaust system. Moreover, a heat store is a possibility.

BMW is expected to fit the new 3-Series with its new eight-speed automatic transmission, instead of the 6-speed automatic transmission.

It’s just a week since BMW officially bade farewell to the Formula 1 circuit, and now the rumour mill is working overtime with the reports that it would the Mercedes-Benz backed McLaren F1 team which is next in line to say adios to F1.

This has been inferred as a result of the ongoing global economic recession and the conflicts encompassing Formula One.

Mercedes Benz is yet to confirm its engagement with F1. Honda quit the F1 racing track citing economic recession last year in December followed by BMW last month.

Recently, the automakers have questioned the relevance and benefits of competing in F1. Perhaps if relevance is what Mercedes is looking for, it may go back to sports car racing which is increasingly embracing alternative drive trains, particularly in the American Le Mans Series.

Mercedes Benz owns 40 per cent of the McLaren team and supplies engines to both McLaren and Brawn. If Mercedes does decide to pull out, it is not clear how that would affect McLaren.

McLaren was an F1 stalwart long before Mercedes came on board and could conceivably continue, perhaps using engines from Cosworth. Interestingly, the withdrawal of automakers could take F1 back to the 1970s when most of the teams were independent and aside from Ferrari and Renault most used Cosworth DFV V8 engines.

McLaren-Mercedes won several constructors’ world titles over the past years and three drivers’ crowns from Mika Hakkinen (1998, 1999) and Lewis Hamilton (2008).

BMW M6 Coupe in India
How many cars is it possible for any body to own? Three? Five? Seven? Alright, you want the guessing number to be dragged a bit more? Ok, How about Ten? Ok, a pretty realistic number, But if we say there is a bloke who has taken the delivery of his 135th BMW? Yes, the man actually did that.

This 73 year “young” German who goes with the name Herr Hammerschmidt has bought 135 cars in his lifetime. Call this heights of loyalty to the brand (or craziness), as all the 135 cars bought by this man are from the German luxury car maker, BMW. Yes, this guy bought only BMWs. The 135th BMW he picked up was a brand new BMW M6 Coupe.

The Munich based Herr Hammerschmidt, started his love affair with cars at the early age of 12, when he used to drive the car while his father worked on the pedals. He bought his first car, a BMW 1800ti in 1963 and there was no looking back for him who has brought at an average 3 BMWs a year.

Hammerchmidt’s has had variety of BMW luxury cars such as 25 M-series cars, 29 Alpinas and 80 other standard coupes and sedans. He almost spent his entire life’s earnings on this passion of his.

So far we do not have details of which BWM car he liked the most or why did he stick to BMW and not go for other brand of cars, and also how did he mange to raise that much money to keep buying new cars. But we know ‘he did it’. He continues to do it in style even at the age of 73.

German car manufacturers
like the BMW, Mercedes Benz and Audi are already setting new records in India in luxury car ownership. There is no dearth of vintage car collectors in India and the world. But a passion like the one seen in Hammerschmmidt is unprecedented!

Car colours
are not just a style statement anymore. The colour of a car is as important as the other features of the car. It is the colour of the car which reflects the personality of the car owner.

To emphasise this point, we had to throw in a few examples here to this blog. It would be ideal for us to settle down for examples of idols that the Indian revere. Sharukh “King”Khan drives a bright red Pajero, while the lovely Juhi Chawla loves her grey-coloured Range Rover. Sanjay Dutt’s favourite colour is black and that shows in the fleet of cars he owns. Big B roams in a white Range Rover while his bahu, silver Mercedes Benz. Hrithik Roshan flaunts his golden beige Merc.

Cricketers such as Yuvraj Singh jaunts in a blue BMW while Dhoni owns a metallic grey Hummer.

A prominent colour like red connotes danger. So, people who drive a red car are considered to be hyperactive and fast in everything, be it driving, speaking or thinking – dangerous, in other words. Moreover, those who ride black and dark blue cars are considered to be aggressive and black cars are presumed to be more accident-prone.

It is said that car insurance companies ask for greater premium from car owners who own shocking red, shining black and dark blue cars. They believe that cars of these colours are more susceptible to accidents during night and hence have a higher claim rate. Some insurance companies have even started charging more for metallic colours.

Compare yourself with the paint on your car. Green car owners are mean and tend to be hysteric. Those who own blue vehicle bears calm and composed mind but the ones with flashy blue have a fearless mind. Silver symbolises style and endurance, while white a peaceful mind. A golden car reveals its owner’s sophistication and confidence. A red colour car owner is full of zest and energy. That’s why the Gen X goes for a reckless red!

BMW 7-series
is the ultimate statement in luxury. The BMW new diesel version 740d is set come to India in September. The new BMW 740d is set to be the most technologically advanced 7-series luxury car ever. The new BMW luxury car will be powered by a 3.0Litre twin turbocharged engine that produces a healthy 306 bhp and 600 Nm of torque.

Using this powerful engine, the 740d will be able to go from 0-100 km/h in 6.3 seconds. This luxury car will be electronically limited to a top speed of 248 km/h. For all those people who would like to own a BMW 7-series, the 740d is certainly a proposition to look out for. It not only comes with a clean diesel technology but also has an impressive fuel economy of 17.38 km/l on the highway. This fuel economy is also seen in the best of the small cars in India.

New BMW 7 Series Cars in India

Apart from its existing merits, BMW wants to offer the 740d consumers more features for the car. It can be customized to suit individual tastes to reflect the owners’ style. A host of options ranging form 19 inch alloy wheel to interior gadgets are available to choosy customers. The BMW 7-series is a super luxury car with opulence dripping from its exterior to the indulgent interiors. It is a car few can afford in India, but more people like it for its driving wizardry.

BMW has already launched four new models this year including the seductive Z4 roadster. The new 7-series model will only add to its charm and definitely a drool worthy car.

Wednesday, 24 June 2009

Come this June 28th, Tata Motors' high profile acquisition, Jaguar and Land Rover, would thread the Indian roads.

Tata Motors had acquired the iconic British luxury car brands of Jaguar and Land Rover from Ford Motors in 2008. Both the brands will first hit the shores of Mumbai followed by cities like Ludhiana and Bangalore.

Though there is no confirmed news on the models associated with the premium car brands entering the Indian market, speculations are rife that two models from Jaguar, XF and XKR and three models from the Land Rover stable Discovery 3, Range Rover and Range Rover Sport might brave Indian roads.

India is seen as a lucrative market for super luxury brands like Rolls Royce, BMW, Audi, Porsche, Lamborghini, Maybach and Bentley in recent years. The demand for these luxury brands are high in the Indian market and importing of these cars clearly supports the aforesaid statement.

The JLR showrooms will be not only seen in metros but also smaller cities. Available as an completely built unit, the price tags of these models are still kept in wraps.

Monday, 8 June 2009

Ever since their arrival to the Indian car market, German luxury car manufacturers have locked horns with each other to grab a share of the lucrative market. This time, BMW has gone one up in the battle of titans by beating Mercedes-Benz in sales. BMW sold 466 cars compared to Mercedes’ 371 in the month of May.

Despite economic recession and slowdown in the auto industry, the market has remained profitable for luxury car manufacturers which have posted handsome sales figures over the past few months. BMW’s surging success can be attributed to lacklustre performance of Mercedes-Benz when it comes to new car launches. Though the latter has introduced renewed and refreshed versions of its top selling car models, no new models have been brought in over the last six months. Compare that with BMW’s four new model launches this year the innovative X6 sports activity coupe, Z4 roadster, and the very expensive upgraded 7 Series.

Mercedes-Benz also failed to effectively combat BMW’s innovative marketing strategies like zero percent schemes, loyalty programs, and exchange programs.

Though Audi’s car sales aren’t far behind in the race to conquer the Indian car market, BMW and Mercedes-Benz are almost head to head. BMW started off in the lead at the start of the year but then lost out to Mercedes-Benz in subsequent months. After the brief lull, BMW has taken the lead again with astounding sales last month.

Formula 1’s second race which was held in Malaysia got victory to the Brawn GP with the Jenson Button taking away the first position. The victory is commendable as despite the stormy and unpredictable shower, the car which never raced in rain before had taken every for surprise. The second position was taken by Nick Heidfeld of BMW where Timo Glockas of Toyota came in the third position. However, Rubens Barrichello of Brawn GP came in the fifth position.

Due to the impulsive weather, the car race had to come to an end with only completing 31 laps. The last time I remember when rain hit the race was in 2002 during Australian grand prix. As the race had to stop at the 31st lap, the winner was awarded only half the points than actual. With new regulation he race has to complete at least 75 percent for the participants to get complete point which is also why, one or two of the participant’s total point reflect a .5.

Hope in the next race which will be held in China on 19th of April would complete all its laps with out any hindrance from the nature.

There is competition in every segment and we can clearly see the rift between the two luxury car manufacturers from Germany. The two giants of luxury cars, Mercedes-Benz and BMW, are competing very closely to be top in the Indian car industry. Merc, one of the oldest players in the Indian car market is slowly loosing its number one position to its rival BMW. BMW in the first two months of 2009 recorded higher sales than Mercedes. This is said to be the result of the attractive discounts offered by BMW to push the sales.

The company stroke a heavy discount on the older version of 3-series with the launch of the new version. Earlier Mercedes was the only luxury car manufacturer to assemble its models locally in India and this offered a competitive price to Indians compared to other luxury models. But now with BMW and Audi who have also started the local production the competition level for Merc went very high.

In order to strengthen their position in the Indian car market, the luxury car manufacturers are launching new models and introducing expansion plans. When BMW launched the all new 3-series and 7-series, Merc did not lag behind and introduced the super luxury famed AMG range of cars and also the new M class from the SUV segment.

The competition between the car manufacturers is nothing new. It is a part and parcel of life. Every one wants to be the best and are willing to can go to any extend to prove their worth. The competition would be still tougher as Mercedes will fight to retain it number one position in the Indian car market.

Alpina designs a new car based on the powerful BMW to offer world class comfort and thrilling experience to car enthusiasts. It will be a clever buy with the convenience of a saloon and performance of a sports car.

Alpine is an automobile manufacturer based in Ostallgäu district of Bavaria, Germany and is known for selling their own cars that are designed based on BMW cars. This time Alpina took the twin-turbo diesel engine from the BMW 123d and rejuvenated it to produce more horsepower. This was to make the car faster than the original BMW car. If you are an adventurous and fast driver then you’ll definitely enjoy the top speed of 245 km/h with the ability to propel from 0 to 100 km/h in just 6.9 seconds.

The faster Alpina BMW not only makes a power statement with the refined diesel engine but also boasts about cosmetic changes on the exterior as well as in the interior. Some of the most attractive and significant cosmetic changes include stylish alloy wheels, instrumentation with blue dials, leather sports steering wheel, and the Alpina emblem sparkling on the steering wheel.

Alpina’s roller coaster BMW looks even more tempting with the front and rear spoilers along with signature twin exhaust pipes that indicate its added potential.

BMW is experimenting rocket science in cars to go with the advancing modern age of science and technology. What we would see five years down the line is clearly portrayed by the car manufacturer that has joined hands with the NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration) to use their technology in order to boost fuel efficiency and lower harmful greenhouse emissions.

The theory that NASA uses to send their rockets to space involves the use of thermoelectric generators that transform thermal energy into electricity. BMW desires to bring the same concept to earth and use the thermoelectric generators in its range of luxury cars. When these generators will be equipped in cars, the transformed electrical energy will be used to charge the batteries of the hybrid or electric cars. This will tremendously help improve fuel efficiency and drastically reduce level of emissions.

Presently, the skilled engineers of BMW are experimenting on the use of this technology at the company’s high-tech experimental lab in Palo Alto, California. The company is expecting to introduce the rocket science in their cars in the next five to six years. It is believed that a BMW sedan will experience about 13% reduction in fuel consumption with the car running on rocket science.

The generators powering the space rockets are very expensive. And so BMW is also trying to introduce better strategies to pass on least price increase to the buyers so that the technology can be commercially viable. BMW feels that in the next 20 years the NASA technology is sure to take over other alternative fuels.

The harsh financial meltdown, surging fuel prices, and the distressing market condition have not able to put back car manufactures’ plan to introduce the fuel guzzling premium SUVs into the Indian car market. Instead there is plethora of SUVs awaiting debut in the country.

Surprisingly, when the global recession has tremendously spreading melancholies across the globe dragging many big car companies towards bankruptcy, biggies like Audi, Porsche, General Motors, Toyota, Nissan, BMW, and Mercedes Benz are all set to bring SUV fever with their breathtaking premium SUVs in India.

Interestingly, at a time of falling car sales SUVs saw a positive growth in sales graph. The SUV segment also witnessed entry of new enthralling car models and variants like Tata Xenon, new variant of Safari Dicor, and Innova CNG.

Big, bold, and beautiful cars are the latest trend in the car industry. Premium SUVs with cutting-edge technology, stylish exterior and interior satisfying the needs are getting more popular among the Indian customers.

The long list of SUVs from different manufacturers waiting for launch proves their demand in the market. The Toyota Fortuner, Mercedes-Benz GL-Class, Audi's Q7, redesigned BMW X5, Audi Q5, upgraded Volvo XC90, and the Range Rover are some of the top awaiting launch in India.

Concept cars give people a chance to see personification of atypical and unique ideas on wheels. It provides car designers a lucrative opportunity to let their imaginations run wild. And that's what is truly reflected in the BMW’s GINA concept.

BMW’s GINA Light Visionary concept car presents an entirely different idea from what was actually used till date in concept cars. In this concept, BMW car designer has not used steel, aluminium or carbon fibre but a cloth to structure the car. Polyurethane-coated Lycra that is elastic, durable and water resistant is coated over an aluminium frame controlled by electric and hydraulic actuators.

Even more exciting is the fact that the exterior shape of the car can be altered to suit individual desire and taste. The textile fabric is elegantly and tautly placed over a movable metal frame based on the Z8 chassis. It carries the powerful 4.4-litre V8 engine along with a 6-speed automatic transmission. It has four panels-the front hood, two sides and the rear deck. The interior of the car is impressive with flexible steering wheel, headrest rises, and gauges. Isn't that amazing? A car structured using seamless fabric is nothing but an outlandish result of an expanded and highly creative mind.

A shape-shifting car! Think if the car goes to production. Practically speaking it is not possible but with future technologies production of such a car may be possible. Then everyone will have a unique, lighter, safer, and more energy-efficient car.

BMW and Mercedes-Benz are competing with each other to conquer the Indian car market.

Though both the car manufacturers hold the same position and brand image in the country, Mercedes-Benz has outshined BMW in terms of car sales. Surprisingly, the sales figure of Mercedes-Benz saw a positive growth even in the time of financial meltdown in 2008.

All Mercedes cars including the E-Class, C-Class, SLK-Class, and the recently launched high-performance AMG cars have winning characteristics that has taken the brand name to the top position.

Comparatively, even the new BMW cars like the 3-Series and 7-Series have set new benchmarks in the industry. Then why the sales figure of Mercedes is high? Is it the brand name or the competitive bar posed by performance, luxury, fuel efficiency, and ride quality making the rivalry more strong?

BMW also has no clue for the reason of low sales report. But still the company aims to climb higher and take over its biggest rival Mercedes-Benz. BMW is gradually expanding its roots on the Indian soil to plant the seed of success in the country. After the launch of new 3-Series and 7-Series, BMW has even planned a slew of launches in near future which include the models Z4 and X6. It is also.

It seems that the competition between the two car giants is aggressively building and it is yet to see who will dominate the promising Indian car industry in future.

The man behind the seducing style of every BMW car has put his hands off from the brand. Yes, Christopher Bangle BMW’s Head of Design department who have served the company for 17 years imparting his ideas and innovative concepts on BMW cars will no more work with the brand.

Most of the BMW cars that we see today on roads are developed and designed under
Christopher's leadership. Christopher's image and popularity in the car industry became promising in 2002 when he created the redesigned BMW 7 Series with the raised, bustle-like trunk lid. This creative design was christened as “Bangle Bustle” to keep the designer's name intact with the design. Many cues have been pioneered by him and some of them have been imitated by other car manufacturers as well.

All BMW marvels including BMW 3, 5, 7 Series, BMW Z3, Z4, X5, Z8, X3, the new BMW 6 Series, the BMW X6 and the BMW 1 Series are designed by him with creative, imaginary and innovative power. He has also sprinkled his magic on the new MINI and Rolls-Royce models. With a special aptitude for dedicatedly working with his teams, this great car designer has always made in-routes to a bright, prosperous, and ambitious future whilst maintaining the BMW’s brand identity. He has also been bestowed with a dozen patents for his high-end technical applications and innovative designs.

After leaving such a strong impact on BMW, Christopher Bangle decides to move out and take a new and aesthetic route into future. Now the post is handed over to Adrian van Hooydonk who shares Christopher's fascination for design, technology, innovation, and tradition.

Hope Adrian van Hooydonk also imprints same success story for himself as well as the company carrying the legacy of Christopher Bangle.

New BMW 7 Series cars in India

BMW is well known for incorporating innovative and advanced technologies in its cars. This is again proved by BMW with the introduction of the latest ‘Pedestrian Recognition System’ in the recently launched BMW 7-Series model. This system is first of its kind in the car industry which ensures an impeccable safety of the car users as well as the pedestrians.

This amazing system uses FLIR (Forward Looking Infrared) technology which alarms the driver of obstacles by identifying any human body shapes like torso, head, arms, and moving limbs. The HUD system fitted inside the car scans the road up to 300 meters and alerts the driver of oncoming obstruction on the way of the car.

Interestingly, a passive infrared scanner identifies heat signals by humans which precisely spot pedestrians present even at far away distances. This new technology combines iDrive display console that visualizes the road ahead and the Night Vision system highlights which senses pedestrian's shape and heat sources present in the path of the car.

Additionally, the HUD system notifies of any object that appears to be in the lane of the car and signals the driver by flashing an indicator in the instrument panel.

The most surprising thing about this system is that it’s much cheaper than its earlier versions and thus does not add any extra cost in the manufacturing of the BMW 7-Series.

Till date we have witnessed the advent of various new car technologies in the Indian car market. Now it’s time to welcome world's first networking system between your car and the service centre. Performance Motors Ltd., an authorized BMW distributor, has introduces its innovative technology called BMW TeleServices in the car market.

Interestingly, this technology utilizes wireless communication between a BMW car and the BMW service centre. There is a continuous transmission of service-related information between the two. Almost 70 control units in the car monitor all crucial elements and ensure proper and smooth running of the car. If in case, the control unit detects any fault, a toll free call to the service centre is automatically initiated without any intervention of the driver.

Further for the convenience of car owners and to reduce servicing time, customer care executives from the BMW service centre call car owners to fix service appointment and discuss about all the repairs required. Whether it’s an accident, an emergency breakdown, or a fixed appointment, you don’t need to remember the service appointments or worry about inconvenience at the roadside in case of a breakdown because with the new BMW TeleServices, your car will automatically do these jobs.

All BMW lovers can have the opportunity to use this interesting innovation in the recently launched all-new BMW 7-Series.

We all have heard of the saying 'Born with the Silver Spoon'. This phrase is used for a person who is born rich and have everything required to spend a luxurious life. This expression perfectly fits for the son of popular soccer player David Beckham.

David Beckham being a passionate car lover has gifted his elder son Brooklyn, a ultra-small Porsche sports car worth Rs 3.5 million. This customized small single-seater car is handcrafted and powered by the diesel engine. This expensive little toy car is just used for joyride in the backyard of David's mansion.

Such an expensive toy can be afforded only by high society people. In India the trend of gifting expensive cars by the renowned personalities is quite common these days. Very soon the expensive toys will be seen in India and the days are not far when we will see kids going to nursery in their mini Merc or BMW!

BMW ratchets up the trend of introducing new cars in the Indian car market. The company has high plans to launch a variety of new cars along with the model-line extensions.

Some of the great deliveries by the BMW are to be seen in the upcoming X6 and revamped 5-Series. The company is gradually widening its range and strengthening its credentials in India. After introducing the 3-Series, 5-Series, and the 7-Series, the even numerals in between like the 2-Series, 4-Series, and the 6-Series are also expected to be a part of the BMW portfolio soon. An expansion of Z-Series along with extension of X3 is also expected from the BMW’s stable.

The next generation 5-Series is speculated to be introduced by 2010 with a completely new chassis, a double wishbone front suspension, and a light-hybrid technology. Additionally, the X6 hybrid would be rolled out with a completely new concept. But this new concept is expected to be overpowered by the company’s own X3 that is to be introduced with new dimensions, pleasing interiors, and intelligent engine technology.

The BMW is also working on the concept of 1-Series based on the platform of roadster and the Z4 based on Mercedes-Benz SLK-Class. The new image of the A8 is known to be revived in the form of a four door coupe designed and built on the lines of the Porsche Panamera and the Aston Martin Rapide.

With so many new cars in BMW’s stable, there is much to expect in terms of design, engineering, excellence, and elegance.

The liquidity crunch has taken a toll on major sports events including the Formula 1. Though Formula 1 is considered to be the richest sports, yet it's experiencing the pressure of economic meltdown.

One of the biggest F1 spenders, Honda, has already pulled out from the team, putting his team at auction. Honda was known to invest about millions of dollars in this sports event to keep its F1 team buzzing. But, now an immediate withdrawal by the company has triggered fear that other associated car manufacturers could withdraw before the start of the F1 season. Withdrawal by Honda has further brought down the financial position of this sport.

Honda F1 team is now sold out to F1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone with an announcement that the company won’t even supply engines. Honda's withdrawal from the sports has put the future of winning drivers Jenson Button and Reubens Barrichello in dilemm.

As a part of the cost cutting measures the old engines have been detuned to 18,000 rpm for three races next season instead of two in the current scene. Even the number of engines provided to the teams has been reduced in response to the economic meltdown. All the teams would now be provided a maximum of 20 engines, 8 for each of the two drivers and the remaining four for the testing procedure. This is amazingly almost half of what the teams used in the current season.

Possibilities are there that after Honda, other car players like BMW, Mercedes, Ferrari, Renault, and Toyota will also take a backward move to save a heavy investment required to maintain a competitive team.

Car designing is an art that involves creativity and imaginations. No car can be designed without adding spice of creativity and innovation into it. Believing this fact many car designers and design students from across the world participated in the ‘Stile Italiano Giovani 2008' design competition.

It was tough for the jury to decide the best among the participants. But then a decision was required to be taken. Adriano Stellino won the first prize for designing the highly innovative Porsche 917 concept.

Following the success, Louis Gonzales Camino won the second prize for designing the stunning and thrilling sports car, Lamborghini Lidia. It’s exciting to know that the term 'La Lidia' has a strong and age old connection with the heritage of Lamborghini. It simply means the art of bullfighting was sourced to be an inspiration for this concept.

Then there was a high-performance electric sports car, Trioba 2+1 designed by Shashwath Bolar. This great designer won the third prize.

Other award winners include Kristina Magnitskaya and Carlo Alberto Cauchi who had grasped breath of the audience with their extraordinary, imaginative, and elegant concept.

Kristina Magnitskaya is a 25 year old Russian girl who holds the magical power of translating her creativity to paper through interesting graphic skills. She designed the OSMI concept that clearly reflects the widespread presence of females in the future of automotive design.

The other award winner, Carlo Alberto Cauchi, made all efforts and attempts to roll out an innovative concept with soft Italian styling in the BMW Sinus. You would be amazed to know that he is only a 23 year old designer who was influenced by the BMW logo and inspired by a more conservative Bavarian image.

The scion of Mysore Royal Family, Srikanta Datta Wadiyar, has a deep obsession about cars and it is wonderful to know that he owns15 luxury cars.

This big count is surprising but is true. Even more amazing is the fact that he registers all his cars with a registration number 1953, the year he was born.

Among a fleet of 15 luxury cars in his collection, he owns five BMW and one Mercedes-Benz. This clearly reflects his passion for BMW cars. It is bound that the passers by will stop in reverence each time when one car from the fleet is zipped on Mysore roads.

There are few among us who used to feel that high-end luxury cars would have a comparatively lower demand in India due to its very expensive price tag but looks like the trend is changing. The luxury car passion of Wadiyar is a proven example for the growing demand of premium cars in India.

Once again, the car industry has proved its connection with a sports event! BMW and Mercedes have plans to roll out a number of luxurious limousines on Delhi roads by 2010. Delhities, don’t jump with joy, these top-notch limousines are not for you, for tourists.

Almost 150 cars are to be rolled out in the form of taxis. The launch is aimed at providing world class travel experience to tourists from across the world during the Common wealth Games. With these high-end cars, the government of India desires to greet visitors with a brand new fleet of cars.

Can you guess how much the government is investing to roll out these cars? Nearly about Rs 200 crore!

Recently, Honda also showed its interest in Indian sports by gifting Honda Accord to the winner of the game.

What do you think? Is this a branding move by car manufacturers? Or an initiative made by the government? Whatever it is, this move has proved the deep association of car industry and sports industry in the country.

Wake up car importers!

It’s time for car importers to open their eyes and see the expected price hike for imported cars.

Yes, the prices for imported cars are expected to rise due to the weakening of rupee against dollar. At this stage of downturn, car exporters are rejoicing the market but reality is that the importers will have a tough time.

We just wonder how severely this will affect the foreign car manufacturers like Mercedes, BMW, Nissan, Volvo, and Porsche, who are importing their cars to India as Completely Built Units or CBUs. Even Honda CR-V would be affected by weakening of the rupee.

This will definitely increase the prices of imported cars. All the luxury car manufacturers are trying hard to cushion the impact on Indian car customers but till how long?

Earlier the company had plans to drive in its beautiful car Mini to India but the plan to roll out X6 has pushed back the launch of Mini. In a couple of years, BMW is also considering to bring its hybrid car model to the Indian market.

Why do you think? Will the new SUV from BMW stable be able to record a success in India?

Gone are the days for SUVs when they were highly appreciated and liked by Indian consumers. But rising inflation and high fuel prices have now put an end to the production of SUVs. Car manufacturers across the country especially the ones like Mahindra & Mahindra who are mainly into the production of SUVs are facing a tough time.

These huge cars are numbered as high fuel guzzlers and have a bad eco-image. This has reduced the sale of Mahindra Scorpio, Toyota Innova, Maruti Gypsy and other cars in segment.

With a keen desire to fight the battle and raise the market for SUVs, car manufacturers are now hunting for better and reliable alternatives that can drive the sale of these cars. The Mercedes, BMW, Audi and the Porsche are also planning to enter the SUV segment and produce compact cars in the segment with the combination of off-road qualities and luxury comforts.

Will the past days come back for SUVs?

Nattering away with mobile phone behind the wheels has become a fashion these days.

Certain things are really out of thought and understanding. Why do people have long chat on mobile while driving?

Many people have a misconception that they are above all and follow their rules and regulation. Trust, it’s only a misconception. Infact it’s not even a fallacy but attitude.

The driving laws, road regulations and traffic rules are the same for all sections of people. Whether a person is driving a luxurious BMW or a simple Maruti 800, laws, rules and regulations applies to all. But this thing doesn’t fit in the mind of affluent people driving top-end cars.

Most of the times people driving Porsche, BMW or Mercedes-Benz are found nattering away with a mobile handset held to their ears. These are those people who are not bothered about the rules, safety measures and any other regulations. They are only concern about the high-end luxury car they are driving and the attitude they behold.

This attitude and the feeling of being at the top lead to various car accidents and even fatalities. This is because the use of mobile phone while driving reduces driver’s concentration, perception and alertness.

Recent advancements in technology have made it possible for the driver to make safer calls behind the wheels. But still that’s only for urgency. Alertness and concentration is utmost important while driving, hence, Mobile and Driving can never go together?

It is really shocking to know that a successful car like Mercedes E Class is under threat after the launch of a comparative BMW 5 series.

E class series from Mercedes-Benz is the car that comes to mind most vibrantly, a car that has established a niche in the luxury car segment. Many of the premium car owners own this car because of the embodied luxuries, comfort and classy design. It is a car that adds status to life and now it has come under threat. Is this really true or just a rumour?

The E Class cars have a good sales report in the Indian car market. The latest versions of this car are even more interesting and appealing as they are personified with Bi-Xenon headlamps in the exterior coupled with a 3-way Memory package.

Inspite of having a good reputation in the market, BMW's highly potent 5-series beats Mercedes E Class. The 5 series is a car loaded with dynamic design, elegant style, enhanced comfort and standard safety features. Infact, these are the cornerstones upon which the car enjoys the bliss of success. BMW’s car gives a sheer driving pleasure.

Don’t you think that E Class also gives awesome driving experience? If features and comfort level of both the cars are similar, then why there is such a tough competition? Why is Mercedes-Benz under threat?

Concept cars are the fruits of innovative imaginations. When you let your imaginations run wild, you can come up with outlandish results.

Concept cars also follow the same rule of letting your imaginations run wild. This gives a good opportunity to car designers to show their exclusive, strange and innovative car designs. These cars are notorious and are rarely seen on roads. The hidden concept comprises of dreams, future vision and prototypes. These are mainly displayed at Auto Shows to get a viewpoint of the consumers.

Display of such kind of cars helps the car designers and car manufacturers to get consumer’s perspective about the car design. If you explore the global car industry, you’ll find a number of concept cars that are holding dreamy visions about the automotive future. Whether you talk about the BMW shape-shifting car covered with fabric or about the Toyota i-Real concept, they are just amazing and worth appreciation.

Unfortunately, there are no such concept cars in India. It’s difficult to answer why. Are we not creative? Don’t we have the skills to produce something that is extra-ordinary? Why not give a try?

Even you can open the veil of imaginations and produce a concept car that is eccentric, unusual and appealing.

Hybrid cars are in! The German luxury car maker, BMW has announced its plan to introduce the hybrid cars in India by next two years. Though, currently only one hybrid car (Honda Civic) is ruling the Indian roads, the car is expected to get its siblings very soon.

The hybrid car from BMW will also make its international debut at the same time. The company’s sale target has been raised even in this course of inflation. The increasing sale target during this tough time is really appreciated. The reason is very simple! BMW produces luxury cars that are exclusively designed and manufactured for the premium customers, who are not at all affected by the increasing fuel price or interest rate. Moreover, they don’t have to depend on car loans for the payment.

With such an impression of the BMW cars, we are sure that the upcoming hybrids will also create a benchmark in India as well as global car industry.

Already India is host to luxury car brands like BMW, Audi, Volvo and others, who have a market worth few thousands. Many luxury car manufacturers are moving their bases to cheaper markets to cut down costs, which will eventually lower the cost of their cars to suit local conditions. Luxury cars are witnessing an unprecedented growth in these countries. These markets may become more important than their existing markets.

It is not the rich countries like US, France, Germany and UK which will be the driving forces for luxury cars anymore. The demand is getting flat in several European countries. According to a report in Daimler, manufacturer of Mercedes-Benz, the markets of India, China and Russia will be driving the auto market in 2008. The trend may also extend in the next decade.

BMW has been riding high on its success in India since its entry about a year ago. After reaching a sales figure of nearly a thousand cars last year, it’s now aiming at twice the figure for 2008. They have already taken steps in this direction by increasing production capacity at their Chennai plant and are currently looking to source components locally. The BMW 3 Series and 5 Series models produced at the Chennai plant have been immensely popular with the Indian public.

BMW’s strong sales encouraged it to introduce more of its car models to the Indian market such as the popular M Series and the customizable and completely imported 7 Series. BMW has also been tempted into considering the launch of the famous premium hatchback MINI Cooper. The MINI Cooper, however, is not on the list of BMW’s priorities at the moment.

Before BMW’s arrival, German rival Mercedes-Benz took up nearly 50% of India’s fast growing luxury car market. Over the past 14 months, BMW has successfully stolen some of that market away. The top selling model for BMW in India has been the 3 Series which competes with the Mercedes-Benz C-Class. The popular Mercedes-Benz E-Class sees competition from BMW in the form of the 5 Series model.

Excellent aftersales service and great customer relationship have been selling points for BMW. The successful setup and operation of the Chennai plant for local production of the 3 Series and 5 Series cars has been critical to BMW’s success.

The old face of Kolkata (Calcutta) was symbolized by the intellectuals and man-pulled rickshaws. But now the modern face of Kolkata will have BMW cars beside the intellectuals. After different capitals like Delhi (country), Mumbai, (financial), Bangalore (Silicon Valley) and Chennai (cinemas) have got their own BWM outlets, it is now time for communist’s stronghold Kolkata to make way for a luxury car outlet.

BMW has opened an exclusive showroom for its cars. It will sell all the models available in India like the 3, 5, 6, 7 series, the X series and M3 coupe. The cars can also be serviced here. BMW will cater to all its clients in eastern India through Kolkata.

The BMW cars will be in stark contrast against the cycle rickshaws and trams. It will be exciting to have leisurely pace of Kolkata while the roads ruffled by speeding BMW in near future.

Mini, BMW’s luxury small car was scheduled to launch in 2009. The BMW venture in small luxury cars segment is now delayed due to certain reasons and rescheduled for 2010. BMW cars are successfully rolling in Indian roads. But the company feels 2009 is not the right time to launch the Mini.

May be the company has thought of some other strategy for its introduction in Indian market. But this is a good news for the German car manufacturer, Volkswagen who is planning to launch the Beetle this year. The Beetle will cost Rs15 lakh to Rs 20 lakh almost same as BMW Mini which will cost Rs 20 lakh. Being uncertain about the Mini’s success in India, the company has announced to sell the car only in Mumbai and Delhi.
