The ongoing Detroit Auto Show has been graced by many new cars and concepts.

The big story at this year's Detroit show is undoubtedly the new Ford Focus which will hit showrooms next year. The 2010 Fiesta has been a crowd puller too. Ford also showcased the Mustang, strong crossovers, trucks and a fine range of Lincolns.

General Motors launched the Cadillacs and the Chevrolet Aveo.

The Chrysler Group stage was cold as its cars will not come for more than a year and it doesn't want to give his rivals any clues. It displayed the Lancia Delta concept.

Apart from the Detroit Three car companies, it seemed like other car makers are busy exhibiting their electric or hybrid cars, which are the latest trend in the automotive world. Audi showed the scaled-down e-Tron with mid-engined, 2.0-litre turbo petrol power.

BMW displayed the electric 1-Series. Volkswagen showed the coupe concept which is no more than the next Jetta with the back doors sealed up, but its hybrid powertrain is for real. Honda launched the CR-Z hybrid sports coupe.

Others interesting car displays are the Nissan Leaf, Renault Fluence ZE, Tesla Model S and all the other high-profile pioneering electric sedans 'for the masses'.

India and China being the booming Indian car markets despite recession are attracting many big car companies from the world. Both the countries are fairly active in foreign markets with their cost effective and efficient car models.

The recently held Shanghai Auto Show in China witnessed the presence of major car brands like General Motors and Chrysler but surprisingly Indian car manufacturers were missing from the show.

The absence of big Indian players like Tata Motors and Mahindra & Mahindra was felt by many. This was especially noticeable as Tata Motors recently launched world’s cheapest car ‘Nano’ was displayed in almost all the international Auto shows. It also against their policies of going beyond Indian shores for new market. Mahindra has entered African and South American markets. Tata Motors is available in more than 10 international markets. When the Indian car manufacturers are interested in western markets then the question remains why they stay away from China? Is it because Indian car manufacturers are apprehensive about China? Or they are obstructed by stringent entry rules of the motor show?

Indian car manufacturers deny the accusation of being afraid of the competition from the Chinese market. They blame the strict entry barrier for being absent from the Shanghai Auto Show. They further express that regulations for investment and branding are very difficult to follow in China. There is very little scope for car manufacturers who enter in a small way to expand their operations in the country. But Indian car manufacturers are still positive about attending the show sometime in near future.

It seems there is no end to Nano troubles. Since the time Tata Motors has showcased the world’s cheapest car in the Auto Show, the project is facing some or the other hurdle on its way to Indian roads.

After facing continuous obstacles on its path including the long series of violence at Singur plant, Tata Motors was happy when the company shifted the Nano project to Sanand in Gujarat.

But Nano’s misfortune has followed Tata from West Bengal to Gujarat. Even here the company is facing a tough time to prove the ownership of the allotted land. The Gujarat High Court has asked the state government to produce documents of land acquisition that is allotted to Tata for the Nano project.

Sadly, the state government did not have any documents that proved that the land was owned by Tata. The court also ordered Tata to give compensation to the farmers of the Khoda village adequately according to the market price of the land.

With this, it has now become difficult to say, how many obstacles Nano still has to overcome.

I was waiting to take part in the Auto Expo, but I missed the opportunity two years back. I enjoyed the recently concluded Auto Expo at New Delhi in Jan. Most people are hardly interest in the auto industry and usually do not bother about the auto expo and other auto-related events, but this time I was thunder-struck to find even a common person talking about the Expo even before the Expo started. Most of the newspapers, TV channels, and car portals started churning out stories on the Expo and gave a wide coverage of the event.

Why so much hype? Simple - the 1-lakh car, Nano. Nano walked away with all the honors when it was introduced at the Expo gearing people to go out of their way to come and see this small wonder in Delhi. I was proud to be a part of such a memorable event.

I am going to take part in the 78th Geneva Auto Show in March and just heard that Tata is going to display the Nano there as well. This will be Tata’s 11th year of participation in the Geneva Auto Show. Nano was born in India and will make its first International debut at this event.

Only BMW, Ferrari, Audi, Bentley, Mercedes-Benz, and other global players have been the highlight at Geneva, but this time Nano will leave these foreign car manufacturers gawking at its achievement!

The Nano made a big debut at the Delhi Auto Show. The talks of Nano even reached the ears of Detroit. Detroit is currently holding the biggest auto fair in North America, and Tata’s cheap car is again the centre of attention.

Despite a Chinese SUV that debuted at the show at Detroit at generated a lot of interest, the Nano initiated a discussion among car lovers and media across the state. A section of the international media went further to say that the car held centre stage at the Detroit show and it was not even on display.

Nice to see a desi car ruling the car industry and media across the globe surpassing the green angst.

Heard about the recently unveiled concept cars in the New York Auto Show in April? Global automakers presented concept vehicles and a few were good enough to win the green signal at first sight. The Chevy Beat from GM was one of these winning vehicles. GM has hinted that Beat might be produced for the retail market. This concept car is considered as the next small car from GM to launch in India.

In the show, GM showcased three mini concepts; Beat got the highest public support for its production idea of bringing to the market a right-sized car with a right-sized ecological footprint at the right time. This hot hatch is expected to sport a four-cylinder engine in India.

GM has a pretty good demand in the Indian market. However, the Chevy Beat has to win its place and compete with its hatchback siblings - the Aveo U-VA and Spark. We may just see the back of one of these models soon or maybe GM is feeling hatch lucky in India.

Tata’s concept car - the Elegante sedan was unveiled at the 2007 Geneva Auto Show. The design-sophisticated Elegante is larger than the Tata Indigo sedan. It may come with an Inline-4 cylinder transverse petrol or diesel engine, or even a powerful V-6 engine.

Tata Motors, India's largest automobile company, is the only Indian automobile company to participate in the Geneva Auto Show regularly for the last 10 years. It was in the 1998 Geneva Auto Show that Tata unveiled the Tata Indica, which turned out to be quiet a success on Indian roads.

The diesel version of the new luxury sedan would come with a common rail direct injection turbo diesel engine with variable valve timing and capabilities to comply with Euro V emission norms. It will meet all European safety, crash-worthiness, and emission standards. The Tata Elegante features include a satellite navigation system, cruise control, integrated Bluetooth compatibility, heated mirrors, rain sensor, and front and rear parking sensors. Tata will also incorporate several of the design cues of Elegante in the forthcoming generation of Indica and Indigo cars.
