Wishing a very Happy Centenary to Audi!!! The Luxury car manufacturer Audi has completed 100 years in the competitive automotive world. It is among the few car manufacturers to have attained the 100 mark. The others who are in this elite club are General Motors and Ford. Audi in India is a strong player in the luxury car market of India. The cars are well known worldwide for their captivating looks and exemplary performance. Audi’s glorious history was started in 1909 by an enterprising German engineer August Horch. The company traces its origins even further back to 1899, when after having worked for few years with Carl Benz, Horch set up his own company. However, he was thrown out of his own company in 1901 by his partners. This was also the years that Horch launched his first cars. In 1902 he formed his own company but then his partners threw a legal spanner in his plans. Horch could not use his name for his new company, as it was used by his previous company. When Horch lost a legal battle to them, he learnt that the Latin translation of the name Horch (meaning listen) was Audi. Hence on July 16, 1909 he established a new company called Audi. Audi cars began it success run with the Type A model powered by a 22 bhp, 2.6L engine. Horch raced this car and gained immense success. In 1913 he created the first Audi saloon the Type C Alpine Victor. It helped Audi gain notable success in motorsports. In 1920 Audi cars were the first to use left hand drive style. Audi made limousines and saloon with high quality engineering. Audi established its dominance in the European Automobile industry during the 1920’s. In 1932, four car brands amalgamated –Audi, DKW, Horch, Wanderer and came to be called the Auto Union. The four rings in Audi Emblem represent these four companies. The company had to stop the production of passenger cars during the WWII, and resumed its business in late 1940’s. After a brief ownership by Daimler-Benz, it was sold to Volkswagen which currently owns the company. But it was Ferdinand Piech who joined them in 1974 who gave Audi its technological edge. It was because of Piech, Audi coined the corporate tagline ‘Vorsprung durch Technik’ meaning Advantage through technology. Audi brought in the technological changes in Automobiles. The Audi Type M, built in 1923, was the most expensive and luxurious car of its time. It featured four wheel brakes for the first time in an automobile. The next model Type R ‘imperator’ was the first to break the 100 horses barrier. The DKW built in 1931 for the first time featured the front wheel drive for mass produced cars. In 1963 Audi displayed the Wankel Spider engine, the first in the series production car to be driven by rotary piston engine. Audi was also the first to bring in aerodynamic changes to a car design. This helped Audi win several motorsports. Audi also pioneered the use of aluminum for car body and dropped the use of wooden car panels. Audi’s DKW was among the first to use two stroke engines for cars. In 1970’s Audi introduced Quattro engine technology with four wheel drive for the first time. This drive concept previously had only been used on trucks and off-road vehicles. The Audi Quattro technology met with worldwide success in motorsports and was eventually adopted on the entire Audi range of vehicles. It has been continuously innovating since then to improve passenger car performance, comfort, and quality. A lot of our present day car design owes its origins to Audi. Let us salute the magnificent spirit of Audi on this day- July 16, 2009. Labels: Audi-Cars, Audi-India, Audi-Quattro-Technology

After tasting success with the models diesel Dzire sedan and Swift hatchback, Maruti Suzuki wants to introduce diesel versions of its car models. It has also equipped the recently launched Ritz with a diesel engine. It is observed that the demand for diesel cars has been increased considerably in recent times. For instance, the demand for the diesel version of Maruti Suzuki Swift Dzire is relatively more than the petrol variant with waiting period of 3 to 5 months. Seeing this, Maruti plans to add more diesel cars in its credential. Taking a step towards the plan, Maruti Suzuki has raised its diesel engine capacity by 1 Lakh which will make an overall capacity of 3 Lakh by 2010. Currently, it is not been specified by the company how much the waiting period for the diesel model will be reduced with the expansion of the engine capacity. But surely this will help the company to meet the demand conveniently. Its closest rival Tata Motor’s interest in diesel variant might be another reason for concentrating on diesel cars. Though both the car brands have major share in the Indian car market, they want to retain their positions by introducing the commanding car models. Labels: Audi-Cars, Car-Manufacturer, Car-Showroom

Despite the existing recessionary affect in the car industry, Audi India being optimistic has decided to assemble 1,000 units of the A4 and the A6 in 2009. These cars would be assembled at the Aurangabad plant of Audi. Though the car industry is mourning over the pain of drowning car sales caused by economic slowdown, it is said that the luxury car segment was least hit compared to the other segments. Inspiringly, car manufacturers did not lose their spirit and continue to go ahead with their proposed plans. Audi remains stiff with its expansion plans for India and still aims high to spread its network in the country. The energy to drive out 1000 units of A4 and A6 in the uncertain market condition is fuelled by Audi’s excellent threefold growth in car sales in 2008. This is an appreciated result as Audi succeeded in achieving a decent sales volume amid downturn compared to other car brands. Looks like it is the time for Merc and BMW to tighten up their strategies! Labels: Audi-Cars, Car-Sales, Indian-car-industry

Audi R8 is scheduled for launch in November this year. The car is priced at Rs 1.3 crore in India and there are many who are waiting for the launch of this car. The car will be imported from Germany for the Indian market. The imported volume is low and so it will not go through any approval by the authorities. Audi R 8 bears a weight of around 1,560 kg and is an excellent car with a mid-engine, delivering a horsepower of 420. The car has created a benchmark in the global car industry. Audi's sports car is doing wonders throughout the world and soon going to make its debut in the Indian market. In India, there are many people who are ready to pay this big amount for the luxury, quality and superiority the car delivers. It is believed that the bookings for the car started in June 2008 and the company has almost registered 15 orders in its bag for the super luxury car. After bagging 15 orders, the company states that the imported car model is sold out for this year. Sold out! What does this means? This sounds to be strange. The car model has not yet launched but the targeted sale volume is over for this annum. Yes, that's right. Audi R8 has not yet launched but is sold in India. Currently, there are two to three Audi R8s on Indian roads that were bought through direct import. Labels: Audi-Cars, Luxury-Cars, Sports-Car

German car manufacturer Audi is presently focusing harder on India market. The company now targets to sell 1000 units in 2008. It has already sold over 300 units and reaching the new target seems to be a very conservative estimate. Audi had created a successful image since it entered India. This is evident in the fact that it has five models in its portfolio for India. The cars are hugely popular among the youth, who proudly flaunt the four rings.
As the country continues to drive the company performance upwards, the company now seems to be keen to contribute something back to it. It will launch a new A4 sedan in July this year. Labels: Audi-Cars, Car-Sales
