All new passengers cars that will roll out from the January 1st , 2009 will display mileage information. The rule declared by Indian government for all car manufacturers to tag their car models with the mileage information will be implement with the advent of new year.

Maruti Suzuki will be the first car company to imply the rule in the country. The company has already started a training programme for its 14,000 dealers across 600 sales outlets in order to implement the "Fuel Economy Consumer Information" programme.

Interestingly, Maruti Suzuki has already implemented the rule by announcing the fuel economy of its global car A Star. The data for the same is provided by the Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI). The Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI) is supposed to test cars and two-wheelers under the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturer's initiative to provide the mileage related information.

These information will also be supported with a disclaimer which states 'disclosed figure has been arrived at in test conditions and fuel values could differ due to variables such as driving habits, road and traffic conditions, fuel quality, maintenance practices, loading pattern and so on'.

This is an good step taken by the government and the car manufacturers. It is the duty of the car manufacturers to reveal the fuel economy to help the buyers make a good selection based on their need.

New Ford Fiesta Cars in India

Recession has got its hold around Ford’s throat. But still the company has the pedal to the metal. It plans to introduce the new generation of Fiesta based on the winning Mazda platform.

The new Fiesta is speculated to be seen on India roads by 2011. Eyeing the current domestic demand, the company is likely to improve the fuel efficiency of the new car compared to the present day Fiesta. Ford is much optimistic that the car with enhanced fuel economy and performance would do wonders for the company in India.

In addition, the company has taken a less expensive route to tune the old version with a sharp focus on driving pleasure. The company also has plans to localize the new car to about 80% in order to increase its appeal in India. But, unfortunately at this stage when the company is experiencing a severe financial crunch, it may not get the required funds for execution of the project.

So Ford is left with an option to reduce the percentage of localization as well as cost price of the car for the Indian market. The new agenda of execution would design and build the new Fiesta with about 25% of localization. It all depends mainly on the company’s ability to invest.

Ford has high hopes attached with the new Fiesta. If the operations are executed as per the plans and if the market situation is improved till then, Ford would also unveil a hatchback version of the current Ford Fiesta.

As the company is concerned about investment, there are less chances of 80% localization of the car. Because in order to do so, it may need about 100 million dollars, an amount which is economically not feasible.

Renault’s Sandero now gets a green signal to enter the Indian car market in 2009.

The car was supposed to be manufactured at Renault-Nissan’s new facility situated in Greenfield, Chennai. There were market speculations that even the production of the Logan was to be shifted to the facility in Chennai.

But now, after experiencing a severe backdrop, Renault plans to shift both the production to Mahindra’s facility situated in Nashik. Possibilities are there that the proposed Sandero could be built by Mahindra. The joint venture now even plans to produce Logan in the Nashik’s facility.

Sandero is a five-door hatchback with the basic features adapted from its sibling the Logan. The car is spacious, fuel efficient and light on pocket which makes its perfectly fit for the Indian market.

It is known that both the Logan sedan and the Sandero hatchback share most of the car components. Under the circumstances, producing both the cars in the same facility would make logistics easy. The joint venture may earn good profits by implementing these plans.

New Volkswagen Passat Cars in India

Volkswagen has introduced a new generation common rail diesel (CRDi) engine into its model Passat. It is speculated that the company is quietly moving away from its conventional Pump Duse (PD) engine technology to a more advanced common rail technology.

Volkswagen dealers in India have also liquidated their Passat stocks that possess the company’s traditional PD engine. The best part is that the change of engine technology has not brought any change in the car price.

The new generation CRDi has now become industry standards. And this has compelled the company to shift to the new engine technology. It is beleived that in terms of power output there is not much difference between the CRDi and the PD. Surely, there is a massive difference in terms of efficiency and performance between both the engines.

CRDi engine definitely has a winning technology behind its design, composition, structure, and performance that has supported it to gain popularity in the industry.

After experiencing a dull market for a long time, car manufacturers are now rejoicing their Christmas gift. This merriment is brought by the government who has played the role of Santa by gifting them the lowered excise duty. Yes, the 4% reduction in the central value-added tax has tremendously raised car sales.

Excitingly, the market that was down from the past few months, have witnessed a number of customers walking into the car showrooms. With this, the December car sales have rose to about 20-25%. Even the piled inventories with the manufacturers are getting cleared.

The discounts offered by car manufacturers in response to the lower excise duty had not shown any kind of excitement at an early stage. But gradually, leading car players realized that the rebates have helped improved car sales, especially in the past five days.

Cars that have experienced maximum sales are the small cars that account for about three-fourth of the total car sales in December. Car companies like the Hyundai and the Maruti Suzuki have gained maximum revenues from their pleasing small cars like the Alto and Santro. Talking about the sedans, the New Honda City has seen good demand among the consumers.

All these car manufacturers has received the gift they wanted. But, luxury car manufacturers like the Mercedes-Benz and the BMW are still in dark because of the high car finance rates. However, with the end of this calendar year, luxury car manufacturers are still hunting for better ways to boost their sales.

Wednesday, 24 December 2008

As the current calendar year is now to end after a long period of woes and despair in the car market, Indian car manufacturers are now banking on the new year to bring some fortune in the industry.

December was to see various new car launches including the Fiat Linea and Mahindra Xylo. But the meltdown in the market and Mumbai terror attack pushed the launch of Linea and Xylo. But, is that really true? Some say the key reason for pushing forward the launch date of these cars is not the fear of recession but to compile a good inventory of cars across all dealers at the exact launch date. At this stage, its difficult to judge whether the fear of falling car market or preparing to have a stockpile of cars have forced them to postpone the launch.

New Cars in India
All we can say is that both these car companies have high hopes tied to their respective car models, now to be launched in January 2009.

The recent moves taken by the government with regards to reducing fuel prices and lowering excise duty was also believed to bring some relief to car manufacturers. But, unfortunately, the government was not successful in resolving the core issue of availability of finance to car consumers. So, the worries and despair stayed.

Companies like the Toyota, Audi, BMW, and the Hyundai are ready to launch their respective car models in the coming time. Though facelifted Innova, BMW 3-Series, and Audi's A4 sedans with two new engine options are expected to come by next year, Hyundai i20 is likely to make its entry by December end.

With high hopes and aspiration, car manufacturers are actually waiting for the New Year splash. They all are aiming for elevated car sales and a better car market with the portfolio of car launches and advancements taking place in the upcoming year.

Car giant Volvo is all set to introduce the first ever crash-proof car. Sounds really interesting! Scheduled to make its debut in the Detroit Motors Show in January 2010, this car will be first of its kind in the global car market.

The car is supposed to be built with a radar and a sophisticated cruise control system that would control the distance between the corresponding car and other vehicles. The intelligent car will alert the driver by monitoring drowsiness or distraction. It will avoid imminent collision by auto-braking in situations the driver fails to react in the case of an accident. The system is designed to automatically monitor the car's speed and detect any oncoming obstacle ahead on the way. This is something incredible to believe but the pace at which technologies are advancing, something like this can be possible.

The best part of this new technology is that it would drastically reduce the rate of road fatalities that is about 100,000 per annum in India. And even more across the Indian boundaries.

The technology would be first seen in the Volvo S60. With this, car owners can have a relaxed and pleasurable drive with a strong belief that no one in the Volvo car can be inured or killed.

It's incredible to believe that still the use of steam is not restricted to cooking. Amazingly, steam is being used to propel cars. And the new land speed record car produced by the British Steam Car Challenge team proves this perception.

The fastest steam-propelled car was the Stanley Steamer with a top speed of 205 km/h introduced in 1906. Since then, this car is ruling the industry with its capability to produce unmatched speed. But, unfortunately this unchallenged era of the Stanley Steamer comes to an end now as British engineers and students of Southampton University has designed a steam powered car.

The new Steam car is technically crafted with the best technologies and expertise to deliver a top speed of 270 km/h. A steam powered car generating a record breaking speed like this is just astounding. This effort by the madcap engineers and students is also aimed at creating a buzz in the field of low-emission car technologies.

Adding to the excitement of this steam car, the team has named the car as 'Inspiration'. The name is credited to the inner hopes of the team that desire to inspire more and more people to go green. If steam can delivers a record breaking speed with lower emissions, then there are possibilities that these type of advanced green cars will take up their position in the global car market.

However, India is still new to the concept of steam engine. But, the move towards a greener approach by Indian car manufacturers may track steam as an alternative fuel in the future.

The liquidity crunch has taken a toll on major sports events including the Formula 1. Though Formula 1 is considered to be the richest sports, yet it's experiencing the pressure of economic meltdown.

One of the biggest F1 spenders, Honda, has already pulled out from the team, putting his team at auction. Honda was known to invest about millions of dollars in this sports event to keep its F1 team buzzing. But, now an immediate withdrawal by the company has triggered fear that other associated car manufacturers could withdraw before the start of the F1 season. Withdrawal by Honda has further brought down the financial position of this sport.

Honda F1 team is now sold out to F1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone with an announcement that the company won’t even supply engines. Honda's withdrawal from the sports has put the future of winning drivers Jenson Button and Reubens Barrichello in dilemm.

As a part of the cost cutting measures the old engines have been detuned to 18,000 rpm for three races next season instead of two in the current scene. Even the number of engines provided to the teams has been reduced in response to the economic meltdown. All the teams would now be provided a maximum of 20 engines, 8 for each of the two drivers and the remaining four for the testing procedure. This is amazingly almost half of what the teams used in the current season.

Possibilities are there that after Honda, other car players like BMW, Mercedes, Ferrari, Renault, and Toyota will also take a backward move to save a heavy investment required to maintain a competitive team.

The global recession has disturbed the domestic car sales in the recent months. Its true that every black cloud have a silver lining. The silver lining is brought by the export sales amid the gloomy cloud canopying the car industry. Ironically, even during this time of downturn, the overall export sales went up with an impressive percentage of 61.8 in November this year.

November experienced a export of 146,337 units compared to 90,398 units in same month last year. Passenger cars played a primary role in whooping the export figure which recorded a sale of 34,607 units in contrast of 15,464 units last year in the same period. The Korean car major Hyundai Motors witnessed a sale growth of 28,500 units from 9,898 units. Also, the Indian car leader Maruti Suzuki's sales raised from 4,382 units to 4,920 units.

Whereas, the domestic sales has been affected in a big way forcing many car manufacturers to cut down their production capacity. Most of the car manufacturers have announced discounts and schemes with their car models with a hope to boost the car sales. Though these strategies have helped them to some limit but then they are still not able to revive the sales figure. Now, they are banking on the coming New Year to bring some fortune along with a fresh new dawn.

Honda's presence is further expected to be strengthen with the launch of an entry-level sedan based on the platform of A segment. The base model of this sedan would have the same Jazz engine but the top-end variant would be powered with a 1.3-litre i-VTEC engine. Honda's new sedan is expected to attract a huge mob of consumers with its competitive pricing, technologies, mileage, and performance.

The upcoming Honda's new cars would definitely establish a new and strong competitive platform against the successfully running Indian cars like Hyundai i10, Maruti Suzuki A-Star, and Maruti Suzuki Swift Dzire as well as the upcoming Fiat Linea and Toyota Yaris sedan.

Toyota is thinking of entering the 'green belt' in India with the introduction of CNG version of Innova. Toyota's eco-friendly car Prius has been a great success in the international market registering many awards and appreciation in its credit for the 'Hi-tech' hybrid technology. It is the world's first mass production hybrid petrol-electric vehicle.

Eyeing the popularity of this green car, Toyota now plans to bring in CNG version of the Innova to further boost its eco-spirit. Toyota Innova from the MUV segment is one of the popular models in the Indian car market. Available in both petrol and diesel version, Innova flaunts with its sturdy design, comfort, safety and unmatched performance in its class. It holds the capacity to accommodate eight people and with the price ranging from Rs 7.8 Lakh to Rs 10.8 Lakh. The CNG version of Innova is expected to cost Rs 75,000-90,000 more including the warranty and installation charges.

The plan of introducing a CNG version of Innova is a right step amid growing customers demand for green cars in the country. The trend of alternative fueled cars is slowing taking prominence in India due to rising air pollution to which automobile industry contributes about 70%.

Even the CNG version of Corolla is speculated to launch in the India market. Hope these new versions will further help to improve the sales figure of the Innova which is already a market leader in its segment and the premium sedan Corolla which saw a slight dip in sales in October.

It's the first time in the history of automobile industry that an Indian brand will appear on the Ferrari. This brand is none other than the Tata Ferrari has signed a sponsorship deal with Tata Consultancy Services aimed at bucking up the impact of global recession squeezing the glamour sports.

Formula One the the richest sports, has recently experienced a hard pinch due to the credit crunch. The aftermath resulted in the immediate pull out of Honda and thereafter, Formula One decided to go for cost cutting measures.

In response, Ferrari agreed to have the stamp of TCS on the bodywork of the Ferraris, Felippe Massa and Kimi Raikkonen, active participants for the 2009 Formula One season. The deal seems to be of great significance amid F1's plan to bring a variety of changes including sporting, technical, and economical.

Tata group is not new to the F1 and Ferrari. Even in 2005, Tata had provided financial support to the winning Indian car driver, Narain Karthikeyan, when he drove for Jordan. Then again in 2006, Tata logo was embellished on the Williams F1 cars that was driven by Mark Webber and Nico Rosberg on the F1 circuits. Since then, Ferrari has enjoyed a massive benefits gained by the efforts and sponsorship of Tata.

This time too Ferrari may benefit from the support of Tata. But, then the current meltdown in the market has gripped the sports so tightly that it's difficult to say that how far Formula One will drive in the path of success.

It's good to know that Maruti is heading towards green technologies at an incredible pace. Wearing a green conscience, the company has introduced green cabs in India. Presently, these cabs will only be seen on the roads of Andhra Pradesh.

What is even more impressive is that this new initiative is started with Maruti's small car which is an epic model of Maruti as well as Indian automotive industry. Yes, the company has launched the green cabs for urban motoring on the M800 AC Duo.

Powered by dual fuels and being factory fitted, the car is definitely economical and safe compared to other taxis. But would it be successful in the Indian market, where cabs are considered to be spacious with excellent leg room, shoulder room, and cabin space for the comfort of passengers and tourists.

Though, the cabs interiors are spruced up with functional and luxurious car accessories along with the advanced GPRS (General Packet Radio Service) system linked to the call centre for monitoring car's movement. But yet, the space factor places a big question on the small yet efficient Maruti 800.

The present era of car industry requires technologies that can save every drop of fuel. Car owners look for highly fuel-efficient cars and advancements that can help them save fuel to the maximum.

Seeing the demand of fuel-efficient cars, Ford has introduced a new technology that contributes to improve vehicles mileage. It comprises an ideal gear shift indicator that works in a relatively easy fashion in association with the in-built sensors. The sensors in the gearshift detect the road gradient, car load, and the way car is being driven. Based on these detections, the gear shift indicator sends signal to the driver to inform about the ideal gear switch moment.

This indicator not only helps to cut fuel costs but also reduces carbon dioxide emissions. Offering enhanced mileage, the Ford system continuously monitors the car to optimize gear change activity. Studies and researches have revealed that swift and optimum gear movement greatly reduces fuel consumption, and the Ford’s new system works in response to the uncovered automotive secret.

Though this new system has not yet travelled to India. But, it would be fitted in Ford Fiesta ECOnetic, Mondeo ECOnetic, Ford Transit and Transit Connect TDCi diesel models. In India, it may make its debut in near future.

We all know that the wind of recession had severely hit the global car market. Big U.S car manufacturers like the General Motors, Ford, and the Chrysler were on the verge of bankruptcy and had asked for financial help. It was a big amount that these three major players in the industry required.

They applied for a 14 billion dollar bailout package. But unfortunately, after weeks of long debate and discussions, the Senate refused to provide the said amount to the struggling U.S. auto manufacturers. The General Motors and Chrysler required billion of dollars to forestall a collapse in their business while Ford desired a hefty line of credit.

Shockingly, the proposed bailout is rejected. And this has further raised the fear of a deeper economic downturn along with heavy financial crisis.

In U.S one out of ten jobs is linked to the auto sector. And any kind of hurdle on the automotive sector would have a direct impact on the job market, which would further jeopardize the persistent efforts to ease the economic recession.

With the loss experienced by the Ford, GM, and Chrysler, over ten thousands of jobs are at risk. Adding to that, further financial shocks and disruption in the global auto industry are the most aspirated challenges to overcome. Even the dollar, Asian stocks, and commodity prices have started tumbling in response to the immediate effect of the rejected bailout.

General Motors, Ford or Chrysler failure would also aggravate the market situation in India. The Indian auto industry is gradually making efforts to revive its future. But, a bankruptcy in U.S would definitely endanger the Indian car industry. This is because these car companies have a good market share in India with General Motors and Ford accelerating at a faster pace. Even the auto component industry in the country would get affected by forced production shut down of the U.S. “Big Three”.

Now, it’s time to analyze and study how the collapse of proposed bailout would influence the Indian car market and to plan strategies to overthrow the challenges in the recent times.

After experiencing bankruptcy in U.S due to economic recession, General Motors now plans to enter the used car business. The company feels that this is the time to make a new start with a fresh approach and innovative strategy.

With the current market slump, many car manufacturers are hunting for new avenues to boost car sales. For General Motors, used car business seems to be the best avenue with the current market situation.

The company plans to start its new firm with the brand name, 'Chevrolet OK', from January 15, 2009. General Motors may see a new dawn of a brighter future ahead as most of the car manufacturers including leading market players like the Maruti and Honda have rejoiced success with their used car wings. And further to that the used car market in India is growing at an accelerated pace.

Under the brand name 'Chevrolet OK', the company will only sell General Motors cars as a part of its project. It is also said that General Motors would introduce this used car biz as a pilot project and would also work on its expansion plans, if the company receives a good response in a couple of months.

After most of the car manufacturers has reduced their car prices to pass the benefits of excise cut to their car customers, German car manufacturers are now following the suit.

Audi and Volkswagen have also announced a cut in their car prices in response to the lowered excise duty rates. Excitingly, the prices of the Audi and Volkswagen car models are reduced by up to Rs 2.79 Lakh and Rs 80,859, respectively.

You would be happy to know that the price of the Audi A8, A6 and the A4 is reduced by Rs 2.79 Lakh, Rs 1.51 Lakh and Rs 1.21 Lakh, while Audi's SUV, Q7 is now cheaper by Rs 1.85 Lakh.

Likewise, the Volkswagen has slashed the price of its sedan Jetta in the range of Rs 46,086 and Rs 57,814 and Passat in the range of Rs 75,674 and Rs 80,859 across India.

Government has made a right move by lowering the taxes to arrest the economic downturn whilst giving a new opportunity to the car manufacturers to raise their sales graph.

In this time of credit crisis, falling car sales, and slow economy, car manufacturers have no other option than to cut down their productions.

It’s depressing to know that the leading car manufacturers across the country are now switching over to lower production capacities in response to the declining consumers demand. Car manufacturers like the Toyota, Honda, and the Tata Motors have been forced to revise their sales target due to falling car sales.

These manufacturers already have a piled car stock with them. And to ease the impact of recession, they are trying various offers and schemes on car consumers to bring them back to the showrooms. But all attempts are going in vain. The unstable and unpredictable Indian car market has placed a big question mark on the consumers as well as the manufacturers.

The Toyota has cut its production by about 30% after posting a fall of 48.55% car sales in November. In continuation, the Tata Motors has also announced a cut in their production to go well with the squeezing car demand in the market. Honda is also under the influence of major slump and defers its expansion plan while cutting down production at its Greater Noida plant situated near Delhi.

With such an imbalance in the car market, it’s difficult to judge what the future holds. Car manufacturers are also waiting for the New Year dawn with high hopes that the market situation may improve. If the efforts to ease the impact of recession be successful, these manufacturers would again increase the production capacities in line with the increasing demands.

The small car Maruti Suzuki 800 has made an eminent presence in India. A glimpse back to the Indian automotive history reminds us of the wintry December of 1983, when the first M800 was rolled out on Indian roads from Maruti's factory in Gurgaon. A small car that can happily be tagged as as cultural icon or a social symbol, has accelerated through class and economic barriers to imprint its name on the pages of automotive history.

Today, virtually 90% of the global car manufacturers are plying their cars in the Indian market. But yet, Maruti holds its own significance marking many milestone in India's automotive history.

Proudly, the company completes 25 years of its journey in the country in December 14, 2008. What is truly impressive in this long and successful journey is that till date the total production of 800 is 27,36,046 cars, of which 1,92,914 units accounts for exports.

The Maruti 800 had experienced two generations of its production, one that made its debut in 1983 and ran till 1997. Then, the present day 800 was introduced with a single overhead camshaft engine.

So, today if you revel in the joys of the muscular SX4, scintillating Swift Dzire, the fastest moving Swift, and the technological excellence of A-Star, you know it all made its start from the tiny 800 in 1983. You would be astonished to know that even Maruti owes all its success to its hatchback, the M800.

With so many car manufacturers announcing price cut on their car models, the Indian car market is now on a toss. At one end car companies are reducing their car prices and on the other end speculations of increase in car prices by January 2009 are high in air.

Indian car manufacturers including the Maruti, Honda, Hyundai, General Motors, and the Hindustan Motors have announced a cut in their respective car models in response to the excise cut benefits announced by the government. All these players including the German car manufacturers, Audi and Volkswagen, aim to pass the complete benefits to their customers. According to them, this may boost the falling car sales further accelerating the slow moving car market.

But, then there are confirm news and few speculations that states that many of the car models will become costlier by January 2009. Some Indian states are planning to increase their local taxes which would eventually increase the price of all car models in those corresponding states. Talking about Honda and General Motors, they have already announced that they are increasing the prices across the entire portfolio of their car models. Even Maruti is speculated to increase the car prices of its car by January next year.

With this, the car market is placed on a toss with an imbalance in the expected market performance. If the speculations of price hike are true, the short-term price cut in December this year would not put any major impact on the position of the present day car market. And if speculations are just to gain back the waning car buyers, car sales may boost to some extent without actually reviving the fortune of the Indian car industry.

Car manufacturers definitely have to hunt for a fresh approach and innovative strategies to bring back the lost status and position of the Indian car market.

Tata Motors has already shifted its dream Nano project from West Bengal to Gujarat after experiencing the aftermaths of land issues in Singur. In Sanand, near Ahmedabad, the company has started pre-construction work with an investment of about Rs 2,000 Crore.

In Gujarat, Nano is also set to be displayed at the upcoming Vibrant Gujarat Global Investors' Summit 2009 (VGGIS) where a large number of domestic as well as global investors are expected to mark their presence. The decision to showcase the car in the summit may be in response to the lost significance of the world's cheapest car.

Yes, the Rs 1 Lakh car was the talk of the industry when Tata announced the concept. Even when the car was displayed in the Delhi Auto Expo for the first time, it was appreciated by many car enthusiasts. But, gradually as the car launch date is continually delaying, Nano is loosing its charm among car consumers. All the consumers who were desperately waiting to buy the car are now moving away from the Nano and fixing their car buying decision on some other car model.

Tata may have thought that showcasing the car once again on a huge platform may bring back its lost customers attention and ensures them that the world's cheapest car will roll with a bang on Indian roads.

Potential car buyers in the country are rejoicing the recent price cuts announced by the car companies in response to the reduced taxes. But, there are speculations that this celebration will get over by January 2009 as most of the car manufacturers are set to raise their car prices to about 2 to 3% in January. This will then neutralize the benefits of excise cuts and bring back the car market to its original position.

Though the move is taken with a view to improve the profit margins. There are speculations that almost 31 car models in the Indian car industry will experience a lift in their prices. Major car companies like Maruti, Honda, General Motors, and Toyota feel that now it is difficult for them to hold the current price levels of their car models due to increase in the input cost of production with prices of steel and aluminium soaring high.

All these car companies are planning to increase the prices of their respective car models in the range of Rs 6000 and Rs 58,000. But, we wonder whether this is true or not. There are possibilities that the car manufacturers have announced the proposed price hike just to threat and awaken the waning car consumers so that they can clear their inventories.

With a thought that cars would become costlier in January, many car consumers may purchase cars this December. And this in turn will help the car companies to have good sales in December.

Media reports unveiled that the Ford is in talks with the Cerberus Capital and Texas Pacific Group to have a joint bid for its Volvo brand.

Ford claims this move as an essential survival strategy in the falling car market. Along with Ford, the General Motors Corp. and Chrysler LLC are seeking for multi-billion-dollar US government bailout as they are suffering from a severe downturn in the domestic market due to recession.

Though Mahindra was also looking for the acquisitions to cope up with these turbulent times. But then the company is now looking out for better measures and strategies. To build up its brand reputation in the international market, Mahindra has plans to introduce its popular SUV in the US car market in the upcoming year.

Modern technologies have contributed immensely in shaping and providing a new face to the car industry. With plethora of innovations making its way into the industry, 'Key2SafeDriving' is one more addition in the list.

'Key2SafeDriving' is an innovative car key that prevents the use of mobile phones while driving. The technology is introduced by researchers at the University of Utah and is completely based on the principle of Bluetooth technology. This system includes a device that encloses a car key and is connected through Bluetooth or radio-frequency. This technology then sends a signal to the driver's mobile when the ignition key is switched on. Amazingly, the mobile phone automatically turns to driving mode as soon as the signal is received. When in the driving mode, the phone displays a stop sign on the mobile screen.

This is a great car technology for teenagers as they cannot use their mobiles for calling or even sending text messages to anyone when behind the wheels which is a major reason of car accidents. But they can contact emergency numbers pre-approved by their parents in case of a car breakdown.

Key2SafeDriving would definitely bring in a new wave of revolution to the car industry by cutting down the number of road deaths caused due to mobile phone distraction.

Though the car prices have been recently reduced by car manufactures in response to the excise cut, the prices may likely to hike up again with the increase in local state taxes of few Indian states.

After a long time of falling car sales and dropping economy, Indian car manufacturers are rejoicing the reduction in excise duty announced by the government. But, the industry’s fortune may again start dwindling.

New Cars in India

States like Delhi, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, and Rajasthan are expected to increase their local-level taxes which would definitely bring down the benefits of the lower excise rates. These states are following the trend started by Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Kerala, Maharashra, Tamil Nadu, and Karnataka. The latter have already increased their state taxes and the former are in the process to levy new local taxes. This would unfortunately increase the car prices.

Car consumers who were celebrating the cut in car prices just a few days back are now feeling the pinch. The pinch is even harder and painful because the state taxes are to be levied on the ex-showroom price of the car models. If it was on the ex-factory prices, these customers may have still enjoyed the benefits of excise cut.

Now, it has become difficult to say whether the car market will bloom this December or not. Potential consumers have also felt a harder pinch because the price cut announced in response to the excise cut was lower than the price increased due to the higher state taxes.

December may still prove to be a prosperous month for the car market because the increased taxes are still to be announced. Maybe, till then, potential car buyers can make up their minds to decide on their choice. Customers may take advantage of the reduced car prices now and make quick bookings. But that’s only for a short period.

At this stage when the car market is struggling with the tight credit crunch, waning customers, and slowing economy, car manufacturers are wondering how to retain buyers.

Winning new car customers during this tough period is a very big challenge but at this point of time car manufacturers should focus more on their already existing customer base.

Bain & Co., a U.S-based Company, has recently surveyed thousands of customers in U.S to study their experiences with regards to the ownership, service, and brand loyalty. Excitingly, the company found out that the best way to convert customers to fans is to provide exceptional after-sales services.

Especially in this turbulent time, if manufacturers give excellent and quality services to their existing car customers, they will serve as promoters. Brand loyalty pays on a long run. For example, if a car buyer buys a car today and if he/she gets good service till the entire ownership of the vehicle, the owner will definitely appreciate and admire the brand. This appreciation will further transfer to words of praises and then it will form a promotion channel. So, next time if any of the known relative of this particular owner decides to buy a new car, he or she will definitely put the brand’s name ahead with top most priority. This will also help manufacturers to reinforce their relationships with the customers.

So, today when the market is not doing well, it’s the right time for car manufacturers to move ahead and retain their existing customers with pride and joy.

It’s shocking to know that Honda has quit the Formula One. The key factors contributing to this decision taken by Honda is the downturn in the global auto markets, deepening credit crisis, and unexpected contraction of the global economies.

Honda bought the team in the year 2000 in association with its partner British American Racing (BAR). It was soon recognized as Honda F1. But, now it is speculated that the new team head, Ross Brawn, is looking ahead to contact Ferrari for supplying new engines to the F1 racing cars. If this happens, Ferrari will be back into the sports with a big bang.

This was a tough and galling decision taken by Fukui, the CEO of Honda. Fukui is known to be a true racer who always wanted to do extremely well in Formula One. It is believed that in the last season the company surprisingly participated without any sponsors, proudly fulfilling its commitment to motoring with a green ecological theme.

Some still wonder whether the decision to withdraw immediately was taken because of the lack of sponsors or is it really because of the slowdown in the markets. Some even say that the withdrawal may be because Honda has only celebrated one fortuitous win in past eight years in this sport. This one win was not enough for Honda to feel proud of the team.

Critics also views the surprise pull out of Honda from Formula One as a blow to the team that could affect this glamour sport in many way.

The past couple of months have proved to be a curse for the global car market. The global recession had hit the industry so badly that it has affecting the economy.

In November, the U.S car market experienced a decline of about 37% which is shockingly believed to be the steepest fall in the past 26 years. For about 26 years, U.S market has rejoiced a joyful ride. But now, even the big car manufacturers like General Motors, Ford, and Chrysler have reported over 40% decline in their car sales.

This situation in U.S has severely affected the Indian car market with domestic sales plunging to about 19.38% in November 2008. Like U.S, India also had lived a splendid time with a continuous boom in the domestic car sales in past 8 years.

The glorious years are now over but the car manufacturers are still optimistic with hopes and aspiration. They are offering discounts and schemes as part of Christmas and New Year celebration with the expectation of growth in their car sales. Car manufacturers are looking forward with positive perceptions that the month of December will pour some blessings in the car market and put an end to the slowdown as well as this year.

Almost all car manufacturers have cut down their car prices to bring back their waning customers to the showrooms. The consumer’s response after the announcement of heavy discount on Honda Civic Hybrid and Ford Fiesta are the live examples to showcase that car discounts may boost the car sales. Both the cars have experienced good sales in a small period of time.

Further to that, the Indian Government has lowered the excise duty by 4%. This has given one more opportunity to the car industry for improving their sales numbers. Most of the car companies have reduced the prices of their entire fleet of cars to pass the benefit of lowed taxes to their customers. This means that the total discount in overall price of the car is double-digit with more expectations of car sales to zoom this December.

Technologies and innovations are ruling every sector including the car industry. Today, cars are no more only a means of transportation. Car consumers have put in high aspirations and demands from car manufacturers. They want cars that are equipped with more technically advanced and modern features.

Car telematics is a blend of computer technology and wireless communication that works in association with electronic sensors. The key objective of telematics is to connect cars to mobile networks. These play an integral role to improve communication between a driver and a car with regards to roadside assistance and remote diagnostics. Telematics also help car drivers to perform functions like exchanging mails, downloading digital audio and video files, accessing Internet, and searching a perfect route to a desired destination. These applications further help to improve safety and comfort level while driving.

The U.S was the first market to adopt telematics in car. Following the U.S market, even European and Indian markets have started adopting this technology to introduce improved standards in the car. In India, the worth of telematics can be seen in high-end luxury cars like that of Mercedes-Benz and BMW. Even Volkswagen, Volvo, and Mahindra have introduced electronic sensors in few of their car models.

Car telematics is though a new word in the car industry but a significant one as all the latest technologies including the Driver Information System in New Logan, Brake Assist in Mercedes-Benz cars, or the GPS (Global Positioning System) in quite a few of the cars in India, all are works on the principle of telematics. Indian car manufacturers are still in search of better car-telematics to improve the movement of car on roads to ensure improved safety and better driving experience.

India’s tiny and cute Reva is now set to ride to Israel.

The little Indian-made electric car powered by eight battery units is a big hit in the Indian car market. It was first introduced in May 2001 after around seven tedious years of research and development. The fact that it runs only on electricity does not hamper its popularity, rather it is the little heart of many car buyers across the globe. This small car ensures a safe drive with tubular steel construction and a large crush zone.

After initial success on the home ground, the Reva was taken outside Indian boundaries to places like London, Barcelona, Madrid, Oslo, and Athens.

In London, this car has experienced good success as the municipal corporation there has granted special benefits to Reva owners. Additionally, Reva owners in London enjoy the benefit of specifically earmarked and equipped parking spaces, waived congestion fees, and the permission to drive in lanes allocated for public transportation.

Now, after rejoicing success in various car markets, Maini REVAi is driving to the Israeli car market. It is believed that the Indo-Israeli business consulting firm BDO-I2I has received permission and the franchise to import the car from India.

Driver information system is one of the recent technologies introduced in the car market. It is a refined form of communication channel between the car and the driver.

This new system is found with an amazing appeal in the New Logan and Audi cars. It is fitted in the instrument cluster and displays all critical information required by a car driver. It provides information on the current operating status, average speed of the car, amount of fuel-consumed, distance travelled after the last refueling, and the distance the car can travel with the remaining amount of fuel.

DIS is a live example of union of the consumer electronics industry with the automotive industry. With this many other operations like Bluetooth connectivity, web servers, gaming systems, mobile connection, and GPS (global positioning systems) also enhances the driving pleasures. Customers now demand for such technologies as these contributes to a hassle free driving.

Many car manufacturers are also on their way to adopt the DIS and add value to the driving power of their respective car models.

It’s depressing to know that the recent terror attack in Mumbai, India’s financial capital, has added to the woes of car manufacturers.

Mumbai, at present is experiencing a wave of dismay, fear, and anger. People are down in sentiments in wake of terror attack. Seeing the current scenario, the car manufacturers are compelled to postpone their new car launches.

Mahindra & Mahindra and Fiat are the first ones to defer their car launches. These two car companies are Mumbai-based and have seen the devastated affects the terror has brought to the city. They are not ready to push customers for car sales at this stage when there is upheaval in Mumbai coupled with slowdown in the car market.

Both the companies had plans to launch their car models, Fiat Linea and Mahindra Xylo, in December this year. But now, the launches have been delayed and are speculated to make their debut in January 2009.

Both the launches are significant for the respective companies as these are considered to set new benchmarks in the Indian market. So, they want a fresh and cheerful environment at the time of launch.

It is impossible to dream of a city without cars. But there is one city in India which has given birth to an environmental friendly concept of ‘Car Free City’.

Don’t get amazed, it’s true and interesting to know that Fazilka, a small town located near the India-Pakistan border in Punjab has become the first ever city to follow the ‘Car Free City’ concept in the country. The concept implies the centre of city market to be ‘Car Free Zone’. Four wheelers and heavy motors are restricted to this zone during the day for 12 hours making the life of the pedestrians and the cyclist easy.

The credit goes to the newly elected Municipal Council President of this town, Anil Sethi for implementing this green concept. The local residents of the town also have equal contribution in supporting and promoting the concept. This unique concept was presented at the Fazilka Heritage Festival last year by Graduates Welfare Association Fazilka (GWAF). A detailed study of the project revealed that a car free city would have great impact on the social life of the people. It will not only check the pollution level of atmosphere but also the number of car accidents thereby ensuring better health and safety of the residents.

Truly, a non-motorized city like Fazilka is a heaven on Earth without any hustle and bustle of the monotonous city life where only fresh air blows spreading peace and prosperity.

The ‘Car Free City’ concept in Fazilka may also motivate other city of the country to go green. But it is difficult to say whether this type of eco-friendly concept would be adopted by other towns too.

It seems there is no end to Nano troubles. Since the time Tata Motors has showcased the world’s cheapest car in the Auto Show, the project is facing some or the other hurdle on its way to Indian roads.

After facing continuous obstacles on its path including the long series of violence at Singur plant, Tata Motors was happy when the company shifted the Nano project to Sanand in Gujarat.

But Nano’s misfortune has followed Tata from West Bengal to Gujarat. Even here the company is facing a tough time to prove the ownership of the allotted land. The Gujarat High Court has asked the state government to produce documents of land acquisition that is allotted to Tata for the Nano project.

Sadly, the state government did not have any documents that proved that the land was owned by Tata. The court also ordered Tata to give compensation to the farmers of the Khoda village adequately according to the market price of the land.

With this, it has now become difficult to say, how many obstacles Nano still has to overcome.

Car designing is an art that involves creativity and imaginations. No car can be designed without adding spice of creativity and innovation into it. Believing this fact many car designers and design students from across the world participated in the ‘Stile Italiano Giovani 2008' design competition.

It was tough for the jury to decide the best among the participants. But then a decision was required to be taken. Adriano Stellino won the first prize for designing the highly innovative Porsche 917 concept.

Following the success, Louis Gonzales Camino won the second prize for designing the stunning and thrilling sports car, Lamborghini Lidia. It’s exciting to know that the term 'La Lidia' has a strong and age old connection with the heritage of Lamborghini. It simply means the art of bullfighting was sourced to be an inspiration for this concept.

Then there was a high-performance electric sports car, Trioba 2+1 designed by Shashwath Bolar. This great designer won the third prize.

Other award winners include Kristina Magnitskaya and Carlo Alberto Cauchi who had grasped breath of the audience with their extraordinary, imaginative, and elegant concept.

Kristina Magnitskaya is a 25 year old Russian girl who holds the magical power of translating her creativity to paper through interesting graphic skills. She designed the OSMI concept that clearly reflects the widespread presence of females in the future of automotive design.

The other award winner, Carlo Alberto Cauchi, made all efforts and attempts to roll out an innovative concept with soft Italian styling in the BMW Sinus. You would be amazed to know that he is only a 23 year old designer who was influenced by the BMW logo and inspired by a more conservative Bavarian image.

Greener fuels like LPG and CNG are gradually gaining prominence in the car industry. Many car manufacturers have started implementing the use of these fuels in their respective car models. Many are still on track and heading towards a greener environment.

Taking for example Hyundai that has already introduced greener fuels in its successful compact car, Hyundai Santro and a CNG version of Hyundai Accent. Moving a step further, the company also plans to launch LPG and CNG versions of its Getz.

Even General Motors is persistently working to introduce green versions of all their car models. GM already has a CNG version of its Optra running successfully in cities like Mumbai, Delhi, and Vadodara where CNG is readily available. There are no plans to stop the production of the petrol and diesel versions but CNG and LPG versions will definitely be a better option in the Indian future.

In line with Hyundai and General Motors, Mahindra-Renault also started dispatching the CNG versions of Logan, especially for the taxi market. In a city like Mumbai where Logan is adopted in huge numbers by a leading taxi service provider, Meru, CNG version may prove to be a blessing for both the taxi service provider and the car manufacturer.

The initial additional cost of gas run vehicles and a weak network of gas-dispensing stations will prove to be a major deterrent in introducing these vehicles. But still there is nothing that can bring down the desire of these car companies to introduce greener fuels.

This initiative is not only a profitable decision for them, but also for the betterment of human race.

Mercedes-Benz celebrates the 20000th production of its car in India. Mercedes made its entry in the Indian car market in 1995 and since then the company is heading with leaps and bounds. The first car the company rolled out in March 1995 was the dazzling Mercedes-Benz E-Class. Amazingly, the 20000th car rolled out from the company’s plant in Pune on April 9, 2008 was again an E-Class. It’s just a coincidence which has now become a reason to celebrate.

To add to the celebration, Mercedes rolled out the 20000th E-Class with an Iridium Silver exterior and a Black leather interior. Furthermore, the E-Class is personified with an additional badge, ‘20000’, that gives a distinctive look to the glittering and path-breaking E-Class.

Another reason that adds to the merriment of rolling out 20000th Indian Mercedes from the production lines is the sales of 10000th E-Class till date in India.

This achievement by Mercedes validates its commitment to thrive and prosper even through turbulent times.

The new Honda CR-Z is believed to be the coolest car in the future. It’s a concept wrapped with futuristic styling, hybrid technology, and advanced interiors. It draws its inspiration from the need to deliver dynamic performance in an efficient manner. The CR-Z stands for "Compact Renaissance Zero,” a cute expression that defines renaissance in compact car design. This means that the car will be unveiled with an idea of reviving the designs of compact cars in the global car industry.

Still in the concept stage, this beautiful car is expected to hit the European market in 2009 and in rest of world in the following year. It will be available with a host of green technologies without any compromise on performance and style.

Designed to be revolutionary and energetic, the CR-Z rolls around two keywords, hi-tech and sport. The interiors of the car give a sporty appeal along with the feel of airy spaciousness and blissful driving experience. Other design details including the LED headlights, jaunty fin-shaped sub-lights, and large 19-inch wheels ensure dynamic driving performance.

No fixed dates have been revealed for introducing this clean, fast, light, and impressive hybrid in India. But whenever it rolls out, it will definitely set a niche in the Indian car industry.

Maruti is planning to rename its proposed small car Splash as Ritz. This car falls into the B+ car segment and is adorned with a host of advanced technologies along with futuristic interiors.

The company has not officially announced the change of name. We feel that even the thought of re-christening must be ushered with the thought of bringing some changes in the car. Yes, there are modifications, not only in name but also in the interiors.

The re-named Splash, Ritz, will be priced between Rs 4.5 Lakh to Rs 5.5 Lakh with brilliant styling and modern interiors. The car will be available in 1.2L petrol and 1.3L multi-jet diesel engine.

It’s really depressing to know that a leading car manufacturer is now forced to borrow funds from public.

This initiative is taken by Tata Motors to fulfill its ongoing requirements including the funding of Jaguar and Land Rover deal. Today, we actually realize how hard the impact of recession is on the Indian car market. Till date, we heard about General Motors and Ford pleading for survival. But, today, the situation has become so worst that a car manufacturer like Tata is bound to take fund from public and raise capital. The drip in car sales in November also reflects the current crisis in the car industry.

It’s the first time since 1995 that Tata is borrowing from the public of up to Rs 2,700 to raise capital. But, even then the company offers benefits to the public by offering an 11% annual interest for a period of up to three years, 10% interest for one year on a minimum public deposit of Rs 20,000 and 10.5% for two years.

So, at one hand where Tata will raise its fund, on the other hand public will enjoy the high interest rates on the amount they deposit with the company.

There are speculations that a London-based car customization firm, Alchemy, is promoting its business by wrapping car roofs with 24-carat gold.

After the Gold Porsche and the diamond covered Mercedes-Benz, the trend of wrapping car exteriors with gold is heading ahead. But, we doubt whether car consumers will invest heavily in such a kind of customization. We wonder whether a gold plated car roof will lure customers or not.

Alchemy also excels in embedding gemstones in the gold panel. The company is demanding a high price for covering the cars with gold. Its may be exciting with a wonderful aesthetic appeal but not sure whether people would invest a high amount here or not. And even if they would, this era of downturn does not seem to be a right time for investing so much for just the exterior look.

These days’ car buyers are more specific about fuel-efficiency and performance. They are concern about the styling and visual appeal but not something like a gold plated car roof, at least not at this particular time.

As everyone is awaiting the launch of world’s cheapest car, the Tata Nano, various facts are being revealed about the car.

When the car was first unveiled at the January 2008 Auto Expo, Ratan Tata promised to deliver the car at the price tag of Rs 1 Lakh, so that it could fit in the pockets and aspirations of common people. Unfortunately, as the year proceeded, inflation and soaring prices of raw materials hit the car market which obviously increased the cost of production. Still, the Chairman of Tata Motors lives up to the commitment.

But now, as the launch is being delayed, it’s difficult to say whether Tata will be able to maintain the same price tag. Some commentators even have a say that the car is not priced low, it’s priced correctly.

They feel that the age of high priced cars is on the verge of extinction except the high-end luxury cars. The Nano will also reflect a true picture of a car that is well-designed with perfection if logistics and operations are efficient and progressive.

With the price tag Nano offers, a new revolution is about to happen, a revolution that will place Tata Motors (an Indian name) on the global automotive map. Expectations from the Nano are sky high and Tata is on heels to fulfill them.

The Nano is expected to challenge not only new car but also the used-car market. Despite this, Maruti Suzuki is not at all worried as it expects a growth of 30 percent on its True Value (used car showroom).

However, it is not necessary that the Nano will influence the used-car market because every buyer sets some different criteria before selecting a car. For instance, a buyer, who is looking for a mid-size car clubbed with luxury for an affordable price, will choose a car from the respective segment.

This is one of the reasons which depicts that Nano will not affect other segment. One Lakh car is definitely a great concept but all amenities can not be accommodated in this price. So, one who wants more with low price will go for the used-car market.

Maruti Suzuki recently rolled out the ‘A-star’, which was speculated to rival the Nano but with the delay of Nano’s launch, it is enjoying its space in the market. Moreover, it’s worth mentioning that the A-star will continue to grab prominence till the commercial launch of small cars like Nano and Hyundai i20.

New Audi TT Coupe Cars in India

Punjab is always known for its culture and colourful traditional customs. The state now seems to be the 'hot' market for cars and it is the luxury segment that is scoring high compare to other class. In the present time, when the car industry is facing hurdles due to global recession, it is enjoying good car sales in Punjab.

The demand and sales of premium cars has seen a good growth in Punjab. Yes it's true, and the recent launch of all-new Ford Ikon in Chandigarh also proves the aforesaid. The people of Punjab have a great passion and love for cars. They are the true fans of the latest technology, car features, and all elements that are present in luxury cars.

Interestingly, this state is gradually turning into a luxury car hub with the increasing number of luxury car brands like BMW, Skoda, Audi, and Mercedes-Benz. Looks like the present global crisis has not affected Punjab, as buyers are still investing money to purchase their dream cars. The mode of payment is also a factor that has not affected the prospective buyers in the state. Most of them make solid payment without depending on any financial schemes.

Punjab has given a new vision to the car manufacturers amid the slowdown eventually boosting their confidence and compelling big players to target the state for new car launches.

But only one state cannot bring a change to the huge car industry. The growth and boom can only happen with the development and expansion of the sector in the entire nation as whole.

The car manufacturers are working on different strategies to strengthen their position in India. Now they are trying to win Indian hearts by manufacturing ‘Made in India' cars as buyers are inclined to Indian made products driven by their love for the nation.

Some of the car majors like General Motors, Maruti Suzuki (MSIL), and Volkswagen have already laid stone for this new 'Truly Indian’ project. These cars would be developed almost completely in the country, utilizing the technical expertise and skills of creative Indian engineers. The cars will be exclusively built keeping in mind the Indian road conditions and the buyers taste.

General Motors is expected to introduce ‘Indian car’ by next year. The Indian car leader Maruti Suzuki is working on full swing for the production of India-built car and also plans to hire more engineers further to facilitate the manufacturing process. Though Maruti Suzuki A-star is the fruit of Indian technical expertise and designs, we cannot call it completely India made, as a lot of Japanese technologies are used to develop the vehicle.

Hyundai i10, which has bagged many awards and critics’ appreciation both in India as well as abroad, is also completely manufactured in India. Also, in the lineup is the Volkswagen’s 'Indian Car', which is currently under the development stage.

‘Made in India’ cars would probably be the next latest trend in the Indian car industry. This will further strengthen the position of Indian car industry globally. But hope the design, quality, and the price are also taken care.
