Indian culture inspires Car designers
With Automobile Industry booming in India, Car designing course is getting popular with the youngster. Young designers are coming up with innovative designs. Now Indian culture is inspiring them. It is “the Sidi Saiyed ki Jali”, an well know mosque in Ahmedabad that inspired a NID (National Institute of Design) student to design a luxury car symbolising the monument. Another theme they took from Indian culture is “Navras”. These outstanding designs have given them the opportunity to pursue their internship in the renowned automobile design house, Pininfarina of Italy. They also won 'Luxury Car For India' competition hosted by designers associated with manufacturers like Ferrari, Ford, GM, Jaguar and Fiat. Well, with these achievements the car designing seems to be another upcoming career option in India. If this trend continues, days are not far when we will see cars with contemporary designs rolling Indian roads. Labels: Car designing, indian automobile Industry

Small cars to be cheaper

Tic...Tic time for REVA and Nano
This time both Tata Nano and Maini REVA is going to have a tough time. Well known clock makers Ajanta group is planning to manufacture an electric car which will be cost lesser than Nano. The electric car by Ajanta Group is expected to cost Rs 85,000. They are already manufacturing electric scooters and bikes under ‘Oreva' brand. As a part of R&D for the small car project, the company has already imported eight electric cars of different brands. At present it is Maini REVA that rules the Indian roads. Sounds great! Tough competition among car manufacturer in small car segment. Looks like India will soon be seen with more eco-friendly cars. With the growing number of eco-friendly cars, buyers will have more option to choose from small car segment. Beside this, these cars will help to reduce air pollution.

Counterfeits galore at 1,500 crore
As counterfeits have a free hand to market their products despite efforts by manufacturers to maintain the difference, it is imperative that government steps in to stop this. The government, so far, has shown a laidback attitude. As the number of companies entering India increases, the government also needs to take quick action on this. If India does not act fast, the problem could get compounded beyond repair. It may reach the scale of China’s piracy in electronic and auto parts. The individual car part buyers are in no stage to contain the menace, as most counterfeit parts look more original than OEM products themselves. Moreover, it is not possible by the companies to monitor every nook and corner of the country. Hence, it rests on the government to enact tough laws and implement them. In a recent study by National Council of Applied Economic Research stated that counterfeit auto parts form a shocking 37 percent of the total component market in India. The Counterfeits of OEM parts of all car manufacturers in India ranging from Maruti Suzuki to Mercedes-Benz are available in the market. The market size of counterfeits is valued at Rs 1,500 crore. This issue not only affects the original products but can also prove fatal to the car owners. Labels: counterfeit auto parts, indian automobile Industry

BMW aims to sell 2000 cars in 2008
BMW has been riding high on its success in India since its entry about a year ago. After reaching a sales figure of nearly a thousand cars last year, it’s now aiming at twice the figure for 2008. They have already taken steps in this direction by increasing production capacity at their Chennai plant and are currently looking to source components locally. The BMW 3 Series and 5 Series models produced at the Chennai plant have been immensely popular with the Indian public. BMW’s strong sales encouraged it to introduce more of its car models to the Indian market such as the popular M Series and the customizable and completely imported 7 Series. BMW has also been tempted into considering the launch of the famous premium hatchback MINI Cooper. The MINI Cooper, however, is not on the list of BMW’s priorities at the moment.
Before BMW’s arrival, German rival Mercedes-Benz took up nearly 50% of India’s fast growing luxury car market. Over the past 14 months, BMW has successfully stolen some of that market away. The top selling model for BMW in India has been the 3 Series which competes with the Mercedes-Benz C-Class. The popular Mercedes-Benz E-Class sees competition from BMW in the form of the 5 Series model.
Excellent aftersales service and great customer relationship have been selling points for BMW. The successful setup and operation of the Chennai plant for local production of the 3 Series and 5 Series cars has been critical to BMW’s success. Labels: BMW, Car sales, Mercedes-Benz

Jaguar and Land Rover launch is far away
Much has been written about acquisition of luxury brands Jaguar and Land Rover by Tata motors. People, who are obsessed with super luxury cars, may be waiting eagerly to put their fingers across for these luxury brands in India. But, they will have to wait for at least five years to drive home Jaguar and Land Rover in India. So much so hype has created on JLR deal that many had thought Tata will introduce these brands in India may be within one or two years. In fact, Tata has no plans to launch these luxury brands in India for the next five to six years as it is now only concentrating to revamp these brands and roll out in USA and other western countries first. Tata might think of launching these cars in India after success of these cars in other countries. For Tata, success of these brands in other countries has become very crucial to strengthen its position in overseas mark Labels: Jaguar and Land Rover launch, Tata Motors
New look for Kolkata roads
The old face of Kolkata (Calcutta) was symbolized by the intellectuals and man-pulled rickshaws. But now the modern face of Kolkata will have BMW cars beside the intellectuals. After different capitals like Delhi (country), Mumbai, (financial), Bangalore (Silicon Valley) and Chennai (cinemas) have got their own BWM outlets, it is now time for communist’s stronghold Kolkata to make way for a luxury car outlet. BMW has opened an exclusive showroom for its cars. It will sell all the models available in India like the 3, 5, 6, 7 series, the X series and M3 coupe. The cars can also be serviced here. BMW will cater to all its clients in eastern India through Kolkata. The BMW cars will be in stark contrast against the cycle rickshaws and trams. It will be exciting to have leisurely pace of Kolkata while the roads ruffled by speeding BMW in near future.

Electric cars get subsidy in Delhi
After asking the 15-year old cars to undergo a thorough health check–up and asking those who fail the test to retire, The Delhi government has now gone soft on battery operated vehicles. In India the only commercial battery operated car is Bangalore based Reva Maini’s electric cars. The car cost Rs 3.5 lakh in the rest of the country, but will cost merely Rs 2.5 lakh. As much as Rs 1 lakh will be reduced in the total take home price. The state government is giving subsidies of 30 percent. This will really help Delhi to become one of the cleanest cities and also a good news for buyers who want to buy these cars. The thick emission fog will give way for sunlight and birds may chirp on trees. The cost of this bright future will be Rs 35 crore per year for the government. And now don’t think that God’s divine message was received by all the government officials. The proposal was placed in front of Delhi government, by the environment ministry, ahead of the 2010 Commonwealth games. Delhi government is waiving of VAT, road and registration charges to make battery operated cars more attractive than its petrol and diesel run cousins. Well with this price reduction on green cars, people will opt for electric cars rather than going for diesel or petrol small cars. Labels: eco-friendly cars, Electric Cars

GM has exciting prospects for India
General Motors forayed into India way back in 2003 with their Tavera MUV. Five years on and several milestones later, GM's new plans are optimistic and exciting. The Tavera MUV has appealed to the cab market as well as families. Their Aveo sedan has seen steady sales in numbers. Their small car the Spark is attracting a large number of customers. GM has set itself a target of 90,000 cars for 2008, which is 30,000 more than the target they achieved in 2007. This naturally means that they have to step on the gas, and increase their service outlets accordingly. GM plans on increasing the number from 145 to 160 service stations which will take care of fulfilling the 'Chevrolet Promise.' GM has a lot to offer in the future. Their Innova-like MPV scheduled for International markets was caught testing recently. Their small cars Aveo and Spark will be introduced in LPG formats later this year. Another small car is also on the cards, this one being smaller than the Spark in terms of size and price. GM is simultaneously working on engines displacing 1 to 1.4 litres which will find its place in its models in the near future. Low cost pickup vans and similar vehicles are also in pipeline, which indicates GM's desire to invade into commercial vehicles segment of the market as well. One big advantage of GM's cars is that they are tried, tested and accepted in International markets. If you are planning to buy any of their cars, you can do so without a second thought. Steel price rise puts pressure on car makers
The rising steel prices have put a lot of pressure on car manufacturers to raise car prices. The cost of steel has increased by 3.5 percent. The prices have risen despite of efforts by the union government and steel manufacturers. The added cost of steel will increase inputs cost which will have a cascading effect on the entire cost of the car. Mahindra Renault has already increased prices of Logan, and Tata has upped prices on its entire range of commercial vehicles. So far, the small car segment remains untouched by the hike in steel prices. Maruti Suzuki and Hyundai have postponed their decision to hike prices of cars. Tata has decided to weather the crisis and has retained the same prices for its passenger cars. However, the rising inputs cost could force the car manufacturers to crack and increase prices on their products. So all those who have been waiting to get a new car, now is the time to have one. No rivals for Tata Nano
The Tata Nano rival may miss its initial launch date by a few months. The two-wheeler major Bajaj Auto moved into four wheeler auto with Bajaj Lite. Developed by Bajaj engineers, it is expecting to give a tough competition to Tata’s dream car the Nano, which is claimed to be the world’s cheapest car. The company had planned to launch the car with French car manufacturer Renault. But the project seems to be facing delays since the time it was unveiled at the 9th auto expo, 2008. With limited number of Tata Nano hitting the market for a couple of years, Bajaj Lite would have helped balance the demand for ultra low cost car. Compact sedan segment gets competitive
With in a span of six months, the entry level car segment has become the most competitive segment. Interestingly, all these cars are under the 4 meter length and quality for a lesser excise duty than regular sedans. First Tata Motors launched Indigo CS, and recently Maruti released the Swift DZire in March. Toyota has also jumped the fray and has announced a small sedan to compete against the two big players. While Suzuki tampered with existing car Swift, Toyota will bring with the Japanese experience of small cars. It has partnership with Daihatsu Motors, a leading manufacturer of small cars in Japan. The company is also appreciated for meeting international standards for car comfort. So when you can get all conveniences and comforts in smaller sedans, why go for larger cars at all? JLR could put Tata in elite club
Tata Motors has done something that no car manufactures have ever done before in India. With the Jaguar takeover, Tata has given a new turning point to the Indian Automobile Industry. According to a section of UK press, Tata could now compete with the Mercedes, BMW, Audi and Nissan, the ultimate luxury statements, if it increases production of Jaguar and Land Rover. The marketing would not be difficult as Jaguar and Land Rover are strong brands of style statement in UK, US and other developed economies. If the company decided to go for aggressive marketing and hike production volumes, then it would surely catapult Tata to the elite club easily. But still we have to wait to see if other Indian company would go for such a strategy.

Ford Fusion fails, where CRV scores
Did Ford need Fusion at all? I think no. Fusion has been moving slowly in sales clearly giving a signal to its manufacturers. Though it may have been a fast mover in Europe, but the car has not made any significant impact on the crossover SUV in Indian car market. Look at the recently launched Honda CRV. It has sold several numbers across several cities. The demand for the SUV is just dropping in like leaves from a tree in autumn. Fusion only has an impressive interior and its off-road tyres, but nothing more. Its performance of 68 bhp seems too little. Its heavy body mass dose not give the push you want from a Ford car. The unimaginative designing is also of no help. The petrol and diesel variants are good on road performances but slow while moving of the shelf. Discrepancies in Car prices
Are car manufacturers selling us Indian cars at prices higher than that they are sold in Western countries. But most car manufacturers would say that they are holier than thou! Look at this – Skoda is selling Laura which puffs out 200 bhp power for European markets. But, the same car come with half power -100 bhp, is sold in India. And the price is same! Don’t you think that car manufacturer’s should lower down the prices and fix it according to the performance! Look at Skoda’s performance. It does not feature in any premium car manufacturer list in Europe, but in India it is doing roaring business. It shows that car manufacturers still think Indians car buyers can be convinced to buy anything they give. Labels: car manufacturers, Car prices in India, Indian cars

Mumbai observes ‘No Honking Day’
Honking one’s car is considered rude in many countries but it’s a must do thing in India. It’s an extension of saying “get out of my way.” Car driving in India is so chaotic that one cannot even get a tiny piece of road to pass by without honking. Adding salt to the wound are daring pedestrians and cyclists who cross the car’s path just when drivers are speeding across the roads. Honking is an integral part of driving in India. It doesn’t matter if you are in front of a school or a hospital. “Honking your cars has become necessary”, say respondents to a survey of Television Channel that was covering the ‘No Honking day’ observed in Mumbai on April 7th. As many as 15 lakh people participated in the campaign to quietly protest against this new menace. Labels: Car driving, indian roads, Mumbai

Renault will revamp Logan to Beat Competition in India
Renault made its debut by launching Logan in India through a joint venture with Mahindra a few years ago. After it’s entry into India, Logan has somehow managed to give good competition to its rivals in mid-size segment but it failed to impress and attract more customers as expected by Renault. Now, Logan is being revamped and presented with new style.
It’s not so impressive performance and heavy price tags have forced many customers to opt for other cars than Logan. When people are going crazy for small cars in countries like India, it will be really challenging task for car manufacturers to increase the sale of mid-size sedans like Logan. So, Renault has determined to revamp and add some more frills to Logan. It will launch revamped version of Logan in next few months to take on its competitors mainly Maruti Swift Dzire. Let’s hope Renault will achieve success this time. Labels: Auto market competition, Car sales, Logan, Mahindra, Maruti Dzire, midsize cars, Renault, small cars

Volkswagen made its foray into Indian market after launching luxury sedan Passat and luxury SUV Touareg later on. Realizing the growth of small car segment, it announced to launch two small cars. Volkswagen will launch Polo first in next two years. It will be priced around 5 to 6 lakhs. Many other global car manufacturers are also waiting to launch their small cars. A Car Cheaper Than Spark
Is General Motors creating its own segment of customers for its cars? It could be the fact, as the company now plans to launch a small car cheaper than its now popular car Spark. The existing small car already comes with a 1.0 liter engine and price tag of Rs 3.23 lakh. If the company plans to go for smaller engine displacement this would certainly land them in between Maruti-800 or with the 624 cc Tata Nano. It is likely that the car will set off new wave of revolution of small cars as Maruti-800 is aging fast. With the new launch, having a lower price band, there will be tough competition in the 600cc to 800 cc car segment. It will be interesting to see if the consumer will be able to lap it up. Maybe you can own one car for each year and enjoy them all. Labels: competitions, Maruti 800, new car launch, new cars, small cars, Spark

When younger generation is going crazy for cars across the world, younger Canadians have taken the world by storm discarding cars in their daily routine life. Free car care clinics by Hyundai
Now-a-days, car manufacturers are not only giving thrust to push up sale of their small cars or luxury cars, but also taking much care of their customers even after sale. DZire flares up desire among car buyers
Maruti DZire is already desired by thousands of buyers in India. It was launched on March 26, and the company has reported that it has already sold over 5,000 units in this financial year. Maruti’s impressive sales record seems to be going over the graph. After the lone rider SX4 helped the company top the mid-size cars category, DZire seems to be helping sales phenomenally. The small car segment has also posted an impressive growth. With such a popular line up of cars, it is time that Maruti enhanced it with some global cars. Has time stood still for buyers?
Is India still stuck in old world? The cars sold in India still carry the age old designs. Interestingly, they are still selling in large numbers despite being put in history books in mature western countries. Look at the line up of cars, sold as premium cars in India like Hyundai Accent, Octavia, Ford Ikon and Mitsubishi Lancer. Moreover, Indians are forced to pay fancy sums for these outdated cars. The only new models which can be called contemporary are Hyundai i10, Volkswagen Passat, Maruti A-Star and Honda CR-V. Car manufacturers are taking marketing old cars as new in this country. Pay-per-usage insurance
With the new Insurance premiums rate, it’s good news for both mass of people who use cars occasionally and those who use more than one car. The Insurance Company has planed to introduce pay-per use model of coverage for cars which is already in use in Europe. The new concept works with the help of GPRS system which tracks the car and the rates are charged accordingly. The users will have to pay much lesser charges compare to what they pay presently. The charge will depend on the number of usage, thus reduce the burden on users. In India, this will be helpful for cities like Mumbai and Bangalore where people don’t use cars including small cars, SUVs, sedans and luxury cars much due to traffic problem. Hope it would suit a lot of small users and reduce premiums. Labels: auto insurance, Cars in India, luxury cars, new concept premium rate, Sedans, small cars, SUVs
Scrap excise duty on electric cars
It is good news that the excise duty has been reduced vastly on small cars. The government should have scrapped excise duty completely on electric car. Electric cars would have received a huge push in sales, if the prices dropped. The concept of electric car has been popular in India since Maini Revai was launched. The car is also credited to be the highest selling electric car in the world. Though people are interested in pollution control by opting it, most car buyers have shunned it and going for petrol and diesel cars since it is priced heavily. The another electric and environmentally-friendly car Bavina is set to launch this year and many other companies are in different stages of developing electric cars, a little reduction of price or abolition of excise duty on electric cars would surely encourage buyers to drive home electric cars. Mitsubishi wants more
Has India become a decisive factor in Mitsubishi’s business strategy? It does looks like that if you see at the new products planned for India. The Japanese company is planning to introduce the i–MiEV, an electric car and the very stylish SUV Outlander next year in India. It seems that the company does not want to rest on its laurels gained in past. The company is already selling Lancer, Cedia, Monetro and Pajero. The company is now eyeing luxury SUV segment by launching Outlander and is also planning to introduce the first international brand electric car in India. The company has re-defined luxury cars in India. It can do the same in future. 60% of cars don’t meet fuel efficiency specifications
If the new government norm on fuel efficiency is introduced, 60% of the Indian cars including small cars, SUVs, and luxury cars being sold in showrooms will never see Indian roads. As per new standards, most of these cars consume a lot of fuel and are pretty low on mileage. It’s high time that these fancy sets of wheels got fancy numbers for fuel economy. Only 40% of the car models today qualify. None of the SUVs meet the new fuel efficiency norms and aren’t suitable to off-roading anywhere in India. If enforced, the new norm will bring the current car bonanza to an abrupt end. To discourage low fuel efficiency cars, the US government has levied a gas guzzler tax on such models. Though not exactly same, this is something on similar lines from the Indian government. We don’t know when the new norm will be enforced but this news should get all car manufacturers working feverishly on newer engines and technologies.
