What you say about used cars? How will it be if you buy a used Mitsubishi Lancer or a used Ford Icon and alter it with sporty designs? Will it look sporty if you put a nice spoiler on the rear of your car and cut short the ground clearance? Go Vroooom. The Indian youth needs more designs rather than the usual black or white or red. It’s time to get your dream cars in India’s used car market at an affordable price. The global auto majors are looking for potential buyers of their vehicles in India’s used car market. India’s used car market has had a lone voyager in Maruti and its TrueValue program. Now, Honda’s Auto Terrace, Toyota You Trust brand, Hyundai’s Hyundai Advantage, and Ford’s Ford Assured used car programs have entered the Indian car market. Statistics say that the used-car market counts for one million units across India. This industry is expected to grow bigger faster than in past years. Here is the current scenario of the pre-owned cars industry in India. Toyota’s You Trust venture is all set to roll out at leading dealerships across the country by October end 2007. Honda is ready with their new team trained to focus only on its used-car program called Auto Terrace. The company’s used-car program is currently running in a small way and is expected to be a success soon. Ford Assurance and Hyundai Advantage programs are also doing competitively well in the industry. Last, but definitely not the least, our car guru Maruti is at the top with more than 90,000 used cars units sold through its True Value network. Liked the news of coming 20 models in India for the year 2008? Maybe you’ve been following the filter of information flowing out of our portal about the coming 2009 models also. The world of automakers has booked the year 2009 as well. Let’s check the year 2010 now. We're finally starting to list out some solid information on the 2010 year models. Hooray, here’s the first one. The car majors Nissan and Renault, along with their local partner Bajaj Auto have confirmed the plan to launch a US $2500-car in India. Howz that??? We have seen Renault’s strong relationship with another local partner Mahindra. I think it’s from M&M that they learned the importance of working with local partners. Now it’s Bajaj to ride Nissan and Renault’s new car in India in 2010. The names of the cars are yet to be known. The rumor is that the talks have been going on among them on the car from early 2007. The trios dream to manufacture a $2500 (1 Lakh) car felt possible in India. But they encountered major hurdles in exporting the vehicle to markets such as Europe, China, Brazil, Mexico, and United States. As India is turning to be a die-hard play ground of global automakers for small cars, the trios decided to fully concentrate on making the car for India and making it competitive. Will catch up with you with more 2010 launches in India. Check out our Blogs and Articles section at Carazoo for auto news before it happens. Your sporty Honda CR-V is on its way to introduce a new CR-V variant in India. Honda is now learning that CR-V can rule the Indian SUV market if they launch a new affordable variant through systematic chipping from the existing model. Rumors say the soon-to-be launch smaller version will displace the 2.4 liter, 150 hp, engine with a 2.0 liter, 161 hp, engine. Honda quotes this new engine as the most popular engine option for the CR-V globally. The reduction of power and performance will be marginal in the new version but the fuel economy will improve. The transmission is expected to be manual. These reductions will allow Honda to bring down the price of its Base variant by Rs. 40,000. The current CR-V has a price tag between Rs. 17.9 and 18.6 Lakh, while the new variant is likely to get priced between Rs. 17.5 – 19 lakh. It’s obvious we expect a tough competition between Honda CR-V and all the new SUVs that will flock to the Indian car market in 2008. Expect the new CR-V to be in dealerships by the end of this year. Wide body is the proud Mahindra-Renault Logan’s trademark and slogan. After its successful market launch of Logan in India, Renault found Mahindra as a perfect partner to sell more models. Sometimes it’s more interesting to hear that Indian automakers can bring more output for foreign automakers like Renault. As a response to its success Renault recently announced that it will stick to its agreement with M&M during for the entire duration of its expansion in India. Renault’s continuing quest to completely dominate the Indian market will see the launch of second generation car models from Mahindra-Renault like Kangoo, Megane, Lagune, and Clio in the 2008 model year in India. Logan is currently posting record profits month over month. Watch out the upcoming models from Renault you can see a Mahindra-Renault signature on the rear. Our prediction that Hyundai PA will be unveiled before Diwali has come true. Finally, the Korean auto major has decided to launch the codenamed car on 1st of November. PA's true name is i10. i10 is designed to bridge the gap between the Getz Prime and Santro Xing. Now, we have varieties to choose from. i10 is expected to take Hyundai sales statistics to even greater heights. Indians being compact car lovers, the company has chosen a right place for its launch. i10 is expected to be priced between 3.5-4 Lakh - definitely a worry for other competitors. There is no denying that the most successful hybrid car in the world is Toyota’s lucky number hybrid Prius. Toyota Prius have given Toyota a wonderful environmentally-friendly image. In the global market, Toyota is openly supportive for any "green" legislature. Rumors had indicated that Toyota Prius will soon be arriving India. Recently Toyota has confirmed that it could be the Prius Hybrid that the Japanese giant is thinking of releasing in India. The Toyota Prius is the best selling hybrid in the U.S. This Japanese automaker has already been committed to hybrid vehicles and its consistency has swept it to the top in the long list of auto manufacturers. Many brands have started to offer hybrid versions of vehicles with high fuel efficiency. It is hybrids that are the top choice over other types of fuel-efficient vehicles – thanks to Toyota. I had already done quite a bit of research on Prius and found high-end features like the CVT (continuously variable transmission) and the Hybrid Synergy Drive technology. So if you love green, the environment or your pocket, and are in India then hold your breath for a greener tomorrow! Prius will be sold with a sticker price of US $20,000, or nearly Rs. 8-Lakh – this is as good as it gets! Skoda is considered as one of the luxury car brands in India. After all, with their price tags, it is difficult for a common man to get behind the wheels of a Skoda. Here’s today’s big story: Skoda has just announced a new variant called Ambiente for its Laura series. The unveiling took place last Wednesday in Mumbai. The car, which looks very similar to the existing Laura variants, offers more standard safety features. Buyers now have other reasons to buy the new Ambiente besides the superior features. The most fascinating thing about the new Ambiente is the truly affordable price. Your Skoda Laura is now available at a 13 Lakh ex-showroom price tag. There has been considerable debate over the last few years regarding the best high-end sport- luxury brand car available in India. It was widely thought that the big three brand competitors are BMW, Mercedes-Benz, and Audi. Now, I’d like to take a moment to welcome our new competitor, an all new sport-luxury brand from the Italian carmaker Fiat. Here’s the name you’ve been waiting for: the Alfa Romeo 159. In the 2008 Auto Expo, which is going to be happening very shortly, Fiat is going to announce the debut of Alfa Romeo and the date to import it to India in the first half of 2008. Current information suggests that the Alfa Romeo will be available at selected Fiat dealers in India. Well, from what I understand, Alfa’s engine transplants will add either a 2.2 liter engine or a 3.2 liter V-6 engine that will make a very hearty 260 to 730 horsepower respectively. Fiat has confirmed that the entry prize of Alfa will be 28 Lakh. Let’s gaze at the history of Alfa. Alfa was the first car that introduced the trend for twin spark plugs in the 1960s. The Alfa 156, launched in 1997, was the first car that was powered by a common-rail diesel engine. All this and the car is still competitively prized. As far as we know it’s the cars endure in Indian road conditions and the company service back-up that will eventually decide the success of the new ‘Romeo’ in India. Hyundai stands for cars with clever technology and affordable prices. As the brand continues to liquidate some of its sporty assets from its mid-premium sedan Elantra, inside sources reveal that it is planning to introduce a series of new vehicles of which PA is just a start. The latest news is Hyundai's new plan to debut a big luxury sedan for India in 2 years. Current information suggests that the brand is currently working on around four brand new vehicles. The upcoming models from Hyundai are PA, Santa Fe, i-30, and the new premium sedan D-segment. Hyundai is getting ready to shake up the new global sedan model developed and produced in India. Though the model name is yet to be announced, the company has confirmed that the proposed D-segment car, will hit the market in a "couple of years". The yet to be named vehicle is said to be under development with a highly competitive prize. A couple of questions are still in the air, such as the car will be mated with which type engine? What will be the performance? The new model will compete with which models? Well, we’ll have to wait for further announcements from Hyundai, but the wait may not be long! Indian metros are overflowing with vehicles from various Indian and Foreign manufacturers. However, the demand for more and better choices is not yet satiated. Major car manufacturers are launching more and more cars to attain the top position in this jungle of automotives. As newer cars release, people expectations also rise. Price and mileage are two important aspects that the majority of Indian’s focus on. However, no one like to compromise on quality either. Almost all the manufacturers are trying to meet these expectations. Tata is first in line with its One-Lakh People’s Car. Other manufacturers like Maruti Suzuki, Chevrolet, Hyundai, and Honda are all getting ready to launch passenger cars as early as next year, so that they can stay alive in the competition. India is emerging as one of the most exuberant marketing hubs for cars of all sorts. Manufacturers have come to realize that the smart buyer is measuring all choices and therefore the more choices one manufacturer provides, the better the chances of that manufacturer surviving in this jungle. GM’s recent foothold in India has made a positive impact and the manufacturer is keen on turning India as one of its marketing centers. This sudden frenzy to capture the Indian market will see the launch of over 20 new cars early next year. It is a real dilemma for customers who had planned for a car by the end of the year. With most of the cars set to be launched in a few months, it is difficult to decide whether we should wait for the new launches or buy something which is already in the market. As far as my opinion goes, I would definitely wait! The more the cars in the market, the better the deals I get. For all I know, I could even decide to go for a model that already exists, but due to market competition, it will cost me much lesser then than it will now. Why settle for a prawn when you can get a seafood platter for the same price?!! Maruti is not only famous in India it is also very popular in the island country Sri Lanka. Maruti-Suzuki Zen has raced ahead of all other auto majors in Sri Lanka to secure the top position in Sri Lanka’s auto industry. The only Maruti dealer in the country, Associated Motorways, has placed huge orders to meet the great demand of the people. Though Sri Lanka takes a back seat in the auto market, its market has seen wonders when it comes to the sales of the new Zen version. It is because of its performance, style, and agility. Sri Lankans, according to the treaty signed by the Indian and Sri Lankan government, are saved from heavy taxes for the cars imported from India. Now, that Zen has secured its place in Sri Lanka, Maruti-Suzuki is aiming at other Asian countries. There is no doubt, our Maruti is going global. Honda Motors are holding serious talks with the Indian government to establish rules for hybrid vehicles to be sold in India. Honda is interested in gasoline-electric hybrid cars that meet great expectations of mileage. India is currently one of major auto markets, but it has no definite set of rules and regulations when it comes to hybrid vehicles. If the Indian authorities give the green signal, Honda will introduce its Civic hybrid, which is selling like hot-cakes in North America, Europe, and Japan. Once the talks are over, Honda will decide on when to launch hybrid cars in India. Because Indians are most concerned about the price and fuel economy, hybrid cars will be an answer to all our prayers and I bet the environment will be pretty happy too! Hybrid cars give 80% better mileage, without compromising on performance, compared to conventional gasoline cars. Emission is also comparatively low. Subsidies for hybrid cars are a must as they cost more than the usual petrol and diesel cars. Honda is trying to work on this front. Once Honda gets permit to launch their hybrid vehicle, all other manufacturers will think of doing so. The more hybrid vehicles run in India the lesser the pollution. Global car manufacturers Honda, Toyota, Nissan, and BMW are negotiating with the NATRIP (National Automotive Testing and R&D Infrastructure Project) to benefit from testing the robustness and performance of their vehicles intended for the International market. NATRIP gives an exact picture of the performance of the vehicles invariable of climatic conditions. Testing costs are low in NATRIP compared to other vehicle testing agencies. As international car manufacturers are probing ways to make their products a success, testing cars in India will be one of them, because it costs significantly low. As piracy issues are thronging in China, companies think India is the best base to test their up-coming vehicles. NATRIP is planning to hire more brains for suggestions regarding the quality of equipments that need to be fitted in the future vehicles. The agency is also working hard to support the Indian component makers in the global markets. NATRIP has its centers in Chennai and Pune. GM India touched its highest sales statistics yet, in India. Since General Motors introduced its vehicles to India, this is the first time the firm has enjoyed a profit with such high margins. General Motors cruises ahead of its competitors with the extremely affordable Chevy Spark and the value-for-money Aveo UV-A. GM has sold more than two times the units it sold last year in the same period. General Motors India for the first time beat Ford Motors India in the market share. With the festive season on in India, GM has cut down the price of Spark by over rupees 50,000/-, which is also one of the reasons for the auto major to enjoy boosting sales. Because the offer is available only for a limited period, no wonder people are rushing to GM dealers spread all over the country. If General Motors consider extending the offer for another few days there is no doubt that our pavements will be full of GM brands. Right from when I laid my eyes on Mahindra Scorpio, it has stayed as my most favorite affordable SUV. Its macho looks with wide headlamps and tough tyres, and a most interesting taillight design that climbs-up all the way to the roof changed the way people looked at SUVs. The ad which shows the vehicle wading without any hassle in all terrains is really magnificent. On the inside it has plush interiors that would rival any sedan. It has a tilting steering column, an air conditioning system, power steering, power windows, an audio system, and safety features including tubeless tyres, fire resistant upholstery, anti-roll bar, and a collapsible steering column. The 5-speed manual transmission along with the SZ CRDe 4 stroke engine helps the vehicle attain a power of 115 hp on India roads. The performance is complemented by independent front and rear suspensions. What more can one ask to cruise on Indian roads. Quick, what comes to mind when you think of Porsche? A clean cut designed sleek, fast, and incredible handling 2-door sport car with a genuine racing heritage. The ‘Made in Germany’ Porsche is soon to be launched in India. Porsche has recently confirmed that it will assemble its top rated cars in India. Well, here are the Porsche models that will test Indian roads first: the GT and the Cayenne GTS. After the launch of the GT and Cayenne GTS, Porsche has chosen to assemble more vehicle range in India. The GT and Cayenne GTS are Porsche’s landmark models, known for a ride that quickens an enthusiast’s heartbeat. It’ll be crazy if I’ll say getting a new Porsche is a financially savvy move. But relax. Porsche has quoted that Indian buyers can sign up with all these versions at a significantly cheaper prize. All we can do is hope that the price is the only thing that will be cheaper! After all, no want wants to drive a tin even if it does have a Porsche symbol at its front! Now it’s time to hear it, see it in action, to feel it in the hands of our Indian army; wild in the streets - the new armored Safari. Tata Motors has lined up an armored Safari for the use of the Indian Army. The most fascinating thing about the armored Safari is the hand-grenade protection, shatter-proof glass, and side bomb protection with firing ports. Thanks to ever-developing technology and systematic and creative ideas. We have seen Tata’s cars roll out on Indian roads in almost all vehicle segments. We have heard of Tata’s 1 Lakh car. Now, it is time to see bullet proof vehicles for high net worth individuals (HNIs). Reports had indicated that Tata is also working on a new segment that will mainly offer a land mine-proof and bullet-proof vehicle on the Safari platform for HNIs, such as businessmen and political leaders. Like most new innovations, it sounds a lot advanced than it probably is. Hooray! What a concept. Just when many brands have started to offer defense purpose vehicles to the Indian army, Tata went a step ahead. The features will hopefully make VIPs prefer the new armored safari over a regular car. The new vehicle that is currently on track in Hyderabad is reportedly under assessment by the Indian army. Do I need to say more about the whole so-called Formula One, the global auto racing event? Maybe you’ve been following the trickle of information flowing out ever since the 1998 Indian Grand Prix attempt when the Indian government started its attempt to get a F1 racing event in India. Tata, Mahindra, Maruti, and many other Indian Manufacturers are following this event closely. Here's another effort to bring F1 to town. Even if the Indian roads are not that much advanced for a F1 race, we have a huge number of racing enthusiasts with Narain Karthikeyan on to race and Vijay Mallya to support. The Indian Olympics Authority is also on the ground to get the race to India by the October 2010 Commonwealth Games. Critics say that the Grand Prix will meet serious infrastructural and environmental challenges in India, but there’s no denying that India is one of the fastest growing economy in Asia with a horde of Young Indians who have high incomes and F1 enthusiasm. Reports indicate that the Formula One architects have visited New Delhi and seen several sites in the National Capital Region and have handed India a race promotion contract and a circuit rights agreement contract. Let’s keep our fingers crossed and hope to see the first Indian Grand Prix in 2009. Labels: Formula 1 racing, Global market, Imported cars, India, India Trail, Mahindra, Maruti, Tata
Buyers now have another reason to buy a Tata vehicle, besides the excellent capacity and the truly affordable price. Tata Motors has unveiled the new Indica with more safety features. Carmaker Tata Motors on Wednesday introduced a new variant of its flagship hatchback Indica sporting dual front airbags and an anti-lock braking system. Further, the new variant is expected to cater to customers’ with an ex-showroom Delhi price tag of Rs. 4.76 lakh. Tata is trying to engineer these safety features to the top-end variants of Indica. Perhaps one of the most important efforts is adding all these safety features to the IndicaV2 Turbo and Indica DLX that already have a full-fledged safety facility. Everybody knows that since its launch, Indica is Tata’s best selling hatchback in India. Currently the existing Indica comes with standard safety features like anti-submarine seats, side-impact beams, front crumple zones, collapsible steering column, energy absorbing bumpers, and ELR type seat belts. A 1.4 liter, diesel engine drops 61 horses with the smoothest and best-sounding turbo in Indica. Since its launch in 1998 the company has produced over 8 lakh units for the fastest and most powerful hot hatch’s sale. While the new season of soft roaders is in full swing, Maruti quotes the launch of its new version SUV the Suzuki Escudo. Yeah, after Grand Vitara, Maruti is working on an urban cross-country vehicle. Well, that was a quick answer from Maruti to Honda’s CRV and Hyundai’s Tucson! Finally we are going to see some tough competition in the SUV market. Could the coming days be a Suzuki SUV upstart's year? Okay, let’s check out the Suzuki Escudo. As the saying goes Escudo is expected to own a 2.0-litre petrol and a 2.7-litre diesel engine. The biggest news is that Suzuki Escudo will be a completely imported model. When it was showcased in the last Auto Expo, one look at the all-new Suzuki Escudo and it was clear that the Suzuki designers had started focusing their inspiration towards SUVs - the reasonably large and the more clean-cut lines of luxury. If you ask the Suzuki people they'll tell you that this is a second-generation of Suzuki soft-roaders. It is expected to have a prize tag of Rs. 12 - 15 lakh ex-showroom in India. Now Maruti Suzuki competes in the ever more crowded SUV field and the Grand Vitara will soon have a sibling in India. It’s up to you keen Maruti Suzuki enthusiasts to cruise on over to the nearest Maruti dealers for more news on the Suzuki Escudo and don’t forget our portal – coz we provide car info before anyone else! People often think they are safer in an SUV than a Sedan or a hatchback. If you ask me I'll say that the Hummer is the safest and coolest SUV around. Agree? Sunil Shetty’s choice and a definite yes from all Indians who want a muscular and aggressive car that laughs at looks and speaks with performance! The Hummer is a South African SUV known for its ‘goes anywhere’ nature. It has a Vortec 3.7L engine that is astounding and makes off-roads simpler. Indian potholed roads will feel like butter on toast from inside this powerful animal. Hummer is on its way to India. General Motors recently announced that the Hummer H3 will launch in India sometime next year. However, GM is a little worried about the market possibilities. The general feeling is that the super premium brand vehicle will represent a niche market in India, but the current Indian market psychology leans towards small cars like the Chevy Spark. I say - come on GM, take a chance! We may wait for a while to get behind the wheels of a Hummer, but if you wait too long there are companies that will take your slice of the proverbial Indian auto market pie and the Hummer will be left high and dry! Let’s hope for a new growth in Track car productions in India in the coming years. Caparo the company known for the T1 track car is developing a new small car for India. The UK based Caparo’s ‘city car’ would be licensed for production to other manufacturers in the local market in India. As global auto makers like Toyota, Honda, and General Motors have announced plans to launch a compact car in India; we can hope that one of these MNCs will franchise Caparo's city car for production in the Indian local market. Learning from manufacturers like Renault, Volkswagen, Volvo, and Fiat, Caparo too sees the value in an Indian foray with a partner to rationalize investments and get a head start for production, sales, & service. Caparo is in talks with multiple potential automakers for a possible alliance in India. The car that is under development in Caparo’s Chennai factory will find a new space in the heart of the hard core car racing enthusiasts. This T1 racing car is a high performance two-seater designed with the style and function that resembles a Formula One race car. T1 offers a lightweight body and chassis made out of advanced composite materials. The T1 will be showcased in India in Auto Expo 2008. Recently, GM India has announced a new price for Chevrolet Spark. Chevy Spark will adorn a price tag that is reduced by Rs. 53,000 (ex-showroom Delhi). This offer is available across all Spark variants and is applicable only for the vehicles booked between 12th and 22nd of this month. This scheme is to mark the centenary celebrations of its parent company, General Motors Corp. Now that the Chevrolet Spark is available for Rs. 2.79 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi) it might see a sudden jump in auto sales. This discount is offered on Spark keeping in mind its popularity and to make it even more popular. Spark is a compact car, which runs without any trouble and makes parking in crowded city roads easy. Spark’s aerodynamic built and S-tec engine contribute to the car’s fuel efficiency. Roomy interiors and loads of safety features make it a safe and spacious car that is easy to maneuver on city roads. However, the GM celebrations have come at the right time – because now is the time for festivals and cashing in. After all, once the Tata One-Lakh Rupees car launches next year, it will definitely bring gloom to the small car market holders. Hope other companies follow this example and that the various states in India soon accept and adapt to this technology in vehicles. Is Tata too disappointed on Sumo sales? How can changing the trims not result in better sales? The SUV is going to disappear in favor of new cars in the compact, sedan, and MUV segments. Rumors had indicated Tata will introduce a new MUV instead of Sumo soon. Tata Sumo, one of the oldest SUVs in India started production in 1992. Now, it is going down like the Titanic just when India is turning into an SUV hub. If anybody wants to drive a strong hard core Tata SUV, they'll go get a Safari. Tata quoted this as a space for them to launch a series of new exciting segments. India, where small car is the auto market mantra, especially due to urban driving and traffic conditions, will see more small cars from Tata in coming years. Tata Motors and Fiat India, in a joint venture, is set to introduce two new cars in India: the Grand Punto and Fiat Linea. Also, Tata has quoted that it will launch a new multi-utility vehicle to replace Sumo. However, Sumo seems to be like an unsung hero that has been long overshadowed by the Safari – so maybe its disappearance is for the best. We’re already jealous that Europeans get all the good models of the Mercedes Benz before we do, but Mercedes will soon remedy this situation by launching the Viano for us. Yes, Mercedes has done it again and this is great news for those planning to pick up a high-end luxury cab from Mercedes. Hey the multi purpose luxury cab looks truly innovative, I must say! Mercedes quoted Viano for Rs. 45 Lakh. If you are thinking about other luxury cabs available in India, I don’t think you are going to have a deja-vu in Viano. Inside Viano you can walk around and change the seating positions as per your convenience. Yeah, it might look like a crazy thing to say, but it’s true. The van has 8 seats with a sliding track mechanism that allows you to choose legroom space according to your need. In India Viano has a cheaper competitor, the Toyota Innova that is available at a prize of below 10 Lakh. However, Mercedes is a class apart! So, all you Mercedes fans, you can stop reading right now and put the Viano in your 2008 wish list. Labels: cars-India, Imported cars, Indian car market, Launches in India, Mercedes-Benz, Toyota

Jaguar is planning to introduce two new models to the Indian market by next year. Invariable of the fact of whether Tata will buy Jaguar or not, the manufacturer is all-set to launch its models XF and X-type by late next year. The models are expected to be sold by the sole Indian Land Rover dealer Navnit Motors. The XF model holds Jaguar’s future, though the model will not be rolled-out before March 2008. XF model will pose a tough tiff to the BMW 5-series and the Audi A6. The X-type is based mostly on the Ford Mondeo model and is likely to adorn a price tag that reads between rupees 35-50 lakh. Next year end is a long time. Maybe by that time Jaguar would have sold itself to one of the other strong bidders. However, Tata should keep its hope alive! Suzuki is all-set to manufacture a hatchback called Splash. The company has already officially announced it. Though most of the concepts for Splash are imbibed from Agila, a 5-door vehicle manufactured by its partner company, the cues represent more stylishness and uniqueness. Though the complete list of standard features is not yet out, it is in the air that the stability control system will be standard. The price is yet to be revealed by the company. Its first launch is expected to be in the UK market and India will not be far behind! Labels: Car-Sales, Global market, Hatchbacks, Manufacturing new car, New Car, Suzuki

India’s auto major Tata Motors has taken a first step of its expansion. Tata has tied-up with the Italian Fiat Auto to market the Fiat cars, Grand Punto and Linea in the Indian market. The vehicles will be sold in the country through Tata and Fiat dealers. Tata is one of the strongest bidders for Jaguar and Land Rover. It has been more positive and is taking great initiatives in recent times. A tie-up with the Italian firm shows its capability and firm stance. This joint venture can be taken as a positive mark for all of Tata’s future plans. Tata is the first name that pops-up when it comes to auto makers in the Indian market. It is all because of the One-Lakh Rupees people’s car. The world’s cheapest car is first being manufactured by our own desi firm. Indeed something to make us all proud. Let us all wish a grand success to Tata in all its future ventures! Labels: Fiat, Growth in Indian auto industry, Imported cars, Indian car manufacturer, Indian car market, Launches in India, Tata
Raising petrol prices have made manufacturers think seriously of an alternative. Though air cars and gas fitted cars are in the list, it is diesel cars that are gaining popularity. Now, diesel cars are designed to be more environment friendly without too much of a price difference. It is less money and low emissions that are bringing diesel vehicles to the top. Auto manufacturers are also taking keen interest in this front. Recently launched diesel vehicles include Chevrolet Optra and Hyundai Getz Prime to name a few. Other auto majors are planning to launch diesel variants that can pose sturdy competitions to petrol vehicles. Though it was initially thought that diesel vehicles give-out more pollutants and are troublesome, extensive research has put an end to this notion. Diesel vehicles spill-out lesser pollutants than the petrol engine. I have been a petrol car lover since the beginning, but now with all these benefits that accompany diesel cars, I am definitely switching over to diesel. With low emissions and less expenditure on gas I can retain a fat wallet while avoiding guilt towards the environment. Labels: Car-competition, Chevrolet, Diesel cars, Hyundai, Indian car market

It’s been a long wait, but it’s true. The Fiat Grand Punto will introduce a new phase of Hatchbacks in India. It may look a little like the Maserati from the front, but no one seems to be complaining! Fiat Grande Punto is a premium B-segment category car with famous Giorgetto Giugiaro Italian design. From Grand Punto’s new style cues we can expect some changes in the familiar looks of small cars in India. The Indian small car market will definitely love the choices. Take a look at the sporty interiors of the Grand Punto. Comfortable and supportive cool looking seats and the sexy dash definitely provide some class. The Fiat Grand Punto has been given the Euro NCAP five-star rating for passenger safety. So expect a small car with strong safety cues. The model is expected to have a 1.3-litre multi-jet diesel engine from the Suzuki- GM- Fiat alliance engine plant. For the launch of Punto, Fiat has signed a deal with Tata Motors. India’s auto major, Maruti, is very keen to launch the sedan built on the Swift platform. This sedan is expected to hit Indian roads in the month of January next year and would compete with its own sibling, the SX4. Not only this, Maruti Suzuki is also planning to pose a tough tiff to manufacturers like Skoda and Honda with models like Splash, Kizashi, and Jimny. According to the source closely associated with the company, the making of Esteem is almost taken a back-seat. The new Swift sedan will be priced less than the SX4 and is expected in two variants – a 1.3L multi-jet diesel engine and a 1.3L petrol engine. The diesel variant is built keeping in mind Tata’s Indica and Indigo and Hyundai’s diesel cars. Maruti has also asked its suppliers to be ready to supply machinery needed for this mega project. Recently, Maruti unveiled a concept car Kizashi at the Frankfurt motor show, which is said to make its second appearance at the Tokyo Motor Show very soon. It is designed to compete with the A4 segment cars from other manufacturers like Honda, Toyota, and Skoda. Kizashi is expected to come with a price tag of 10-12 lakh. After a long pause, Peugeot, the French automaker, is once again gazing at the Indian market with a low cost model that is under development. Who can blame them for a second glance – at the rate the Indian automobile industry is growing; manufactures have to be blind not to notice us! The company seems still worried about the failure faced by Peugeot and Premier Automobiles Ltd. (PAL), their joint venture partners, in their formative years in India. The cause for the closure of Peugeot in India had termed differently, as poor performance and joint venture failure. Its struggles to survive in the Indian market have resulted in the eventual exit of the company from the Indian auto-scenario in November 1997 – just a year before the auto boom started. Even if the company didn’t play any important roles in the Indian Passenger car market, we cannot forget Peugeot as it was one of the first automobile MNCs to enter India. As the Indian auto market has been a matter of interest for foreign automakers, like Volvo, Volkswagen, BMW, Audi, and many others from around the world, Peugeot is again getting ready to seek its luck in India. Our automobile industry has come a long way from the time they were here – we now not only have a splatter of automobile MNCs, but also a wider consumer interest. So, a definite green signal to Peugeot from my side! Labels: Audi, BMW-Cars, Car-manufacturers-in-India, competition, Indian car market, Peugeot, Volkswagen, Volvo
Volvo Car Corporation, the Swedish automakers, will outsource components worth $99 million from India this year. To get a grip in the growing demands for automotive parts Volvo will join international automakers like General Motors Corporation and DaimlerChrysler in Outsourcing the auto components. The components that are expected to be outsourced from India are engine parts, steering parts, body chassis, suspension, braking parts, general equipment, and electric parts. In this 36 percent exports are heading for Europe. Due to this new outsourcing, the industry exports will jump from $1.8 billion of 2004-2005 to $5.9 billion in 2008-2009. Such big numbers make my head spin! Volvo is a part of the Premier Automotive Group and one of the luxurious brands owned by Ford Motor Company. The Volvo group of India has been outsourcing components from major Tier 1 and Tier 2 companies such as Minda HUF, Visteon, Arvin Meritor, Sundaram Clayton, and Rico Auto. Volkswagen Up – no that’s not a command it is the name of the concept micro car from Volkswagen that was unveiled at the Frankfurt Motor show. Up will definitely bring up the market sales of Volkswagen in India, since they are currently only selling the Passat sedan. The concept car Up is a hatchback with two doors that can seat four people. In India it will get four doors and a longer wheelbase. The exterior appearance of Up resembles the Beetle – and we all know how cool and cute that car is! The inward and diagonal headlamps, horizontally arranged air vents, a chrome VW logo, a tailgate that extends towards the smooth bumper, sporty wheels, and large doors – a small car dream come true. The interior concept includes high level seating, a see and control 7 inch touch screen monitor, sensor technology for navigation control – this may be excluded from the Indian versions, a radio, a trip computer, a climate control system, and the usual shebang. This new model is expected to be produced in large volumes when launched in India – after all we are the hub for small cars! Land Rover, the top rated British automobile manufacturer, is all set to make a debut of its compact SUV, LR2 in India. Navnit Motors, Land Rover's sole Indian distributor is planning to get LR2 to launch in India. The LR2 is expected to be the cheapest variant from Land Rover in India. It would be priced at around Rs 35-lakh ex-showroom. It might be the increasing demands in the Indian auto-market that has made Land Rover take this decision. The distributor of Land Rover in India expects to double the annual volume to over 60 units this year. This strictly muscular LR2 is very luxurious and that plays an important role in the Land Rover's portfolio. A definite winner for all those macho Indian men. It is the most fuel-efficient model from Landy. It caters to more adventurous drivers. The LR2 could well be the best looking SUV on the road today. When it joins the Indian market frenzy, it will compete with cheaper SUVs such as the Honda CR-V, Hyundai Tucson, and Maruti Grand Vitara or the Mitsubishi Montero that falls in about the same price range. Doesn’t look like a tough fight unless price gets in the way! Labels: Honda, Hyundai, Imported cars, Indian car market, LandRover, launch in India, Maruti, Mitsubishi, SUVs

After the successful launch of Passat, Volkswagen has scheduled its popular vehicle Polo (no it’s not the mint!) to launch in 2009 in India. Volkswagen, the people’s car (it’s actually pronounced as “Folks wagon”), is likely to set the production plant of Polo by the end of 2009 and the full scale production is expected to start by 2010. After Polo Volkswagen launches, the small car buyers in India will have fun. Polo is one of Volkswagens ever successful car and I can’t wait to get my hands on it. The Polo in India would be a completely new version, but I hope that all the cool stuff about it is not compromised for good mileage. I mean mileage is good, but the Polo is one of Volkswagen's most popular small cars globally as it is. Volkswagen can definitely do well in the Indian market even though brands like Audi and Skoda are around, coz it is easier to get your hands on – money factor. I mean you can see a few Lamborghinis flying around in India. Volkswagen has inked a deal with the Maharashtra government for producing its cars from Pune. Since Mitsubishi’s collaboration with Hindustan Motors (HM) about a decade ago, it has released an array of popular Sedans and SUVs, but not a single vehicle in the most popular Hatchback segment. With the announcement of an official launch date for the ‘1-lakh car’ by Tata Motors, other auto manufacturers are keen to compete. Mitsubishi is considering introducing its new model ‘i’ to India. The ‘i concept’ car debuted at the 2003 Frankfurt Motor Show. The egg-shaped vehicle carried a 999 cc engine that boasted of a very impressive mileage of 33 kms per litre. It also carried a Mitsubishi Smart Idling (MSI) system which turns off the engine automatically when the vehicle is stationary and can restart it within 0.2 seconds. The ‘i’ that launched in January 2006, comes with an ultra-efficient lightweight turbocharged 660 cc petrol engine and a 4-speed automatic transmission. It sports a wide door, sufficient room for 4 passengers, split-folding rear seats, and alloy wheels. The engine emissions are environment friendly. It is priced a little too high in the European market. With the co-operation of Hindustan Motors (HM), Mitsubishi could introduce a small car, based on the i-car platform, in India. Vehicle cost could be reduced by sourcing parts locally and by stripping out some of the expensive on-board equipment.
