Nobody likes to wake up to a shocker on a Monday morning. But here we have a surprise that might just make your Monday more interesting. Honda has announced an entry level car that will be priced between Rs 3 lakh to 3.5 lakh, and will compete with cars like Maruti Alto and Hyundai Santro. Surprised! Shocked! Actually, we are experiencing mixed feelings.
The smooth engine options and flawless designs of Honda have attracted quite a lot of attention in India, but obviously not enough. We all know that the Honda City and the Civic are one of the most loved cars in their respective segment, but still Honda has a very small share in the Indian car market. And no prizes for guessing that the reason Honda having a small share in the market is mainly due to the unavailability of an entry level (small) car.
But Honda finally seems to have awaken to the reality of the Indian market that small cars are the highest volume sellers in the country. And so here comes Honda with its small car to challenge the existing players in the market.
Takashi Nagai, President and CEO, Honda Siel Cars India told, “Globally there is a tendency towards smaller cars and our research and development division in Japan is looking at that segment (Alto, Santro) as well, what we are working at is combining the K cars in Japan with some cars in Brazil and India and making a car smaller than what we showcased during the Auto Expo in January”.
And that’s not all. Honda is planning to launch another -segment car which will be priced between INR 4-4.5 lakh by the festive season next year to compete with Swift and Hyundai i10. The new car, earlier codenamed 2CV and now called Brio, is based on a concept that Honda showcased in Delhi Auto Expo. And rumours say that, keeping up with the latest trend, Honda would also consider bringing a sedan version of the Brio later.
Honda’s small car Jazz could not really jazz up things in the Indian market. Despite being a good car, Honda lost context in the Indian market mainly due to its heavy pricing. But Honda seems to be quite upbeat about its upcoming small cars in the market.
Mr. Takashi also added “We are focused right now on successfully launching our next small car. With this car, we will hopefully increase our sales beyond 1 lakh units from the current 60,000 units and also start car assembly at our Tapukara plant. Initially it will only be a hatchback, but like the City (sedan for Jazz) it may also be expanded to a sedan.”

The new hatchback model comes with a more muscular front grille, a forceful front bumper bar with triangular driving lights inserted into the lower corners, and a range of new sporty alloy wheels across the range. The car maker has also introduced a new Ionized Bronze metallic exterior colour for the Civic hatch. The Type S has been bestowed with colour-coded side skirts and new 16-inch alloy wheels. In the interiors, the seats seem to have improved, and are covered in half cloth and half Alcantara. Seats in the high-end variant, however, are half leather and half Alcantara.
