Indian Grand Prix is a Dream Come True, Says Ecclestone

Bernie Ecclestone With the arrival of Formula One in India in 2011, millions of fans of the motorsports would soon realize their dreams. Bernie Ecclestone, president and CEO of Formula One Management and Formula One Administration, is one happy chap with his dream of getting Formula One to India so close to realisation. The Indian circuit is midway through completion, with the homologation scheduled for next summer.

“We needed the right place really. We came close a couple of times earlier but it fell through. The people we’re dealing with now (JPSK Sports Private Limited) seem to be sound and solid. It’s all coming along nicely,” Ecclestone said.

So far India has not charted out a plan of impressing the who’s who of the world when they arrive in October for the inaugural race. But let’s just hope that something surprising happens by then.

“No one can repeat what Singapore and Abu Dhabi have managed. I wouldn’t want anybody to copy that actually. I like to see each circuit and race with its own characteristics. The Indian Grand Prix is going to be grand,” Ecclestone, who’s planning to drop by after the Brazilian Grand Prix to check up on the circuit in Greater Noida, said. “The rains would’ve stopped by then. Work has really suffered I heard,” he remarked.

Formula One was not so popular in India until Narain Karthikeyan came along, and then the takeover of Spyker F1 by Vijay Mallya only helped to elevate the situation. The addition of Karun Chandhok in the HRT for the 2010 Formula One season also had a desired effect. Lack of resources has forced Chandhok to sit through a number of races, having made way for the very resourceful Sakon Yamamoto. We all are worried but Bernie is not.

“Having an Indian team is obviously a big help. An Indian driver will be an even better deal. I definitely want to see Karun in a better car next year. He served his apprenticeship in a car that he could do nothing about. He really needs to be in a team where he can show his potential because I think he can be very, very good if he gets the right car,” are his words of encouragement for Chandhok.

Bernie and the Formula One Management earn millions of dollars in each race, so it comes as little surprise that he wants to take F1 to every country in the world. Next season, we have 20 races scheduled and it would not be long till we have some more added to the list.

“We really should be at 16, to be honest. Twenty is plenty, that’s the limit. No more. I’ve been able to squeeze in 20 but I wouldn’t want to increase it. There’ll be mayhem otherwise,” he jokes.

Indian GP

Everyone knows about Ecclestone’s fondness for Schumacher and his return this season pleased Ecclestone a great deal. “He drummed up a lot of interest because of being Michael Schumacher. His car hasn’t been that good but let me tell you he’s a fierce competitor and he won’t stay still till he has a championship-winning car.”

Another wish that Ecclestone wants granted is to take the F1 inside the US and he won’t sit still till dream becomes reality.

“America is a country that should have an F1 race. We have a race in India and soon we’ll have one in the US. It’s great.”

Maruti Suzuki R3 MUV to Launch in 2012

phpThumb_generated_front The king of India’s small car segment is back with a bang after the recent downfall in market share to below 50 per cent. The car maker doesn’t want history to repeat and is doing all it can to regain its market share. Maruti launched the Alto K10, CNG versions of five of its popular models and the Maruti SX4 special edition.

Right now, demand for Maruti cars is so high that India’s largest selling car maker is not able to produce so many cars. We hear there are no Maruti specials this Diwali too. That’s the bad news, and now for the pleasant part: Maruti Suzuki will launch its MUV R3 in 2012. Maruti does not have that strong a foothold in the SUV and MUV segments in India and we believe this step has been taken to achieve the same.

The Maruti new car will possibly fall in the Rs 7-9 Lakh bracket and will battle against the Toyota Innova and Mahindra’s Xylo. The R3 concept was first revealed at the Delhi Auto Expo 2010 in January. The R3 concept shown at the time was a six seater compact van strapped with 3 rows of seats and rear-hinged rear doors. The concept takes its roots from the Suzuki SX4 platform and appears like a stretched SX4.

phpThumb_generated_thumbnailjpeg

The Maruti Suzuki R3 will hit the Indian customers equipped with a choice of 4-cylinder gasoline and diesel motors, in addition to the choice of a compressed natural gas (CNG) option. “There’s a lot more competition now as compared to 5 years earlier. They are getting into MUV’s, which is a clear sign of expanding the product lineup,” Rakesh Batra, auto partner at Ernst and Young said.

This could be just another model from the Maruti stables earning volume sales for the company. Volkswagen, on the other hand, has plans of selling the new car under its own brand too. The platform seems to be gaining popularity, probably due to its practicality. Skoda is thinking of using the same platform to build its own MUV for the upcoming markets.

We hear that the test mule of the R3 concept will dive into the testing phase sometime around the end of this year or early next year. After that, it will be showcased to Volkswagen. The R3 will be one of the first models to be shared by Suzuki with Volkswagen.

phpThumb_rear

Volkswagen is currently keen on tapping Maruti’s mass volume and low-cost expertise to access market price points it currently cannot. So, the MUV could be just the first of many future models shared VW and Suzuki in India and possibly for exports to emerging markets.

Audi e-tron Spyder Images Leak out Ahead of the Paris Motor Show

01audie-tronpms2010 We have all heard rumours about the Audi e-tron Spyder that is set for a grand debut at the Paris Motors Show. Now, we have some leaked out pictures of the same car. We can’t be sure as to where these images originated, but rumours have it that these could be the first sketches of the Audi e-Tron Spyder.

As we all expected, this convertible car appears to be based on the design of the e-Tron Concept shown at the Detroit Auto Show this year and not the original concept shown in Frankfurt. Audi has not revealed any information regarding the engine options available on this car, but if it is headed for production expect a run of 1,000 units in 2012.

02audie-tronpms2010

The German luxury car manufacturer started the e-tron project with a sportscar prototype, and is currently expanding it. First we saw the R8-based e-tron, then the A1 e-tron hatchback, and now there is a Spyder e-tron too. The e-tron Spyder is an evolution of the e-tron system and previews the electric version of the R8 Spyder.

Want to know how the Audi e-tron Spyder works? Here it is: the front wheels of the car are driven by the electric motors, with a range of 50 km on a single charge. Along with that, we also have a 3.0 liter V6 TDI engine which drives the rear wheels. So when both the motors are working, it becomes a four-wheel-drive.

The body of the e-tron Spyder would be a mix of carbon fibre and aluminium while the suspension, steering and brakes come from the regular Audi R8.

03audi-e-tron-spyder

Along with the open-top e-tron Spyder, the Paris Motor Show would play host to a few other cars from Audi too. Rumours say that to mark the 30th anniversary of the Audi Quattro in style, an Ur-Quattro inspired concept will also be showcased.

Cruze Electric Cars to Hit Streets in South Korea Next Month

chevrolet-cruz-ev-2-1280 The Chevy Cruze EV demo fleet is all set to hit the roads next month. GM will be out on this demo project in collaboration with GM Daewoo, LG Chemical and LG Electronics. Electric vehicles based on the Cruze will be out on the roads exploring market needs and gauging customer response on battery EVs in Korea.

“Although there is much more work to be done, our ability to develop this vehicle in less than a year offers a peek at the very promising plans we have for our customers in Korea and around the world,” said Mike Arcamone, GM Daewoo President and CEO.

The new GM project has been aimed at strengthening the car maker’s core vehicle electrification capabilities that include batteries, electric motors, power controls and charging. Through the project, GM will be able to extract data on how well battery electric vehicles are accepted by consumers, they could study driving patterns and charging behaviour while sharing costs and resources. The demo fleets with other partners will be tested in other urban markets too later during the year.

“This Cruze EV demonstration project reinforces GM’s commitment to being a leader in the development of electric vehicles and green technologies, building on our portfolio of hybrids and the Chevrolet Volt,” said Karl Stracke, Vice President, GM Global Vehicle Engineering. “We’ll apply the learnings from this and our other demo projects to help us deliver the world’s best vehicles for our customers.”

The Cruze EV demo fleet will contain the first compact sedan EVs hitting the road. The new cars will draw power from batteries from LG Electronics’ LG Chemical and propulsion systems (motor/inverter). There would be Chevrolet Cruzes and GM Daewoo Lacetti Premieres roaming on the streets of South Korea this October. As of now, GM markets the cars under the local brand in South Korea.

“Expanding the domestic electric vehicle market carries significant meaning for collaboration between GM Daewoo and LG Chemical,” said Bahn-suk Kim, Vice Chairman and CEO of LG Chemical. “Over the past two years, we have forged a strong partnership with GM, and now we look forward to doing the same with GM Daewoo in our home country.”

The LG Chemical 31-kWh battery in the Cruze EV delivers a 201 bhp output. Battery packs usually occupy trunk space, but the electric Cruze’s battery pack has been mounted on the underbody giving the car the same trunk space as conventional vehicles with gasoline engines.

GM and LG Chemical analysis and early tests done earlier indicate that the demo vehicles could deliver a 160-km range on specific test schedules. However, the fleet will be closely monitored to find out the real-world range vehicles of that size can deliver. The electric cars will be capable of accelerating from a standstill to a hundred kmph in just about 8.2 seconds and they will hopefully demonstrate peak speeds of 165 kmph.

chevrolet-cruze-ev-1-1280

Getting to the charging, on a standard household 220-volt outlet, the electric version of the Chevy Cruze will fully recharge in about 8 to 10 hours. However, the demo fleet will test the Quick Charge application that’s gonna reduce charge time considerably.

GM has been working with LG Chemical since 2008 which is the exclusive battery cell supplier for the Chevy Volt electric vehicle with extended range. The Chevrolet Volt will enter the U.S. market later this year.

Nissan Micra Global Sales Hit the Jackpot

2010_nissan_micra So what if Maruti Suzuki sold like more than 20,000 units of the newly launched Alto K10. Competition is lurking in every possible nook and corner and the company’s falling market shares testify the existence of competition that has been there for some time now, and competition that is rather new on the block.

Talking about new competition in the hatchback segment, Ford has already proved its credentials to the big shots in the segment. Another car manufacturer which is rather new at this game is Nissan Motors. Nissan has managed to sell 54000 units of its small car, Micra, in the global market. These sakes include bookings from Thailand, India and hometown Japan.

Nissan Motors had first launched the Micra in Thailand earlier this year. A couple of months later, the compact car made its debut in the Indian market and since then has become one of the preferred cars of consumers in India. The Nissan Micra is expected to be launched in Europe in November. The Micra is sold in other countries as the March. In Thailand market, the company received 26,000 bookings for the car.

In India, too, the car has enjoyed a fantastic start. In the month of August, the car received phenomenal sales of 1,000 units, despite the fact that Nissan has a thin dealership network in the country at present. Nissan is expected to launch the sedan and MPV version of the Micra soon. And the Japanese company aims to touch sales mark a million units by 2013 from all the 3 models.

Micra has brought good fortune for the company and Nissan has reacted well. Nissan added another shift at its Chennai plant as the exports of the Micra will begin soon. Buoyed by this success, Akihisa Suzuki, Global Chief Marketing Manager of Nissan Motors said, “We want to reach one million units by 2013, for the three models based on the new platform V.”

Nissan Micra sports a new styling concept and with all the features that it has packed along, the car sure seems to be a good buy. Features like keyless entry, start stop button which is available on Micra, are generally available on D segment sedans like the Chevrolet Cruze. And if you thought we were bragging about the top end variant, the basic model of the Micra is loaded with useful features too, but Indian consumers have shown an inclination towards the top-end model that comes with the aforementioned features.

Nissan Micra has also received the ‘Most Environmental friendly Car of the Year’ award in Thailand. This combination of value, features, and responsibility makes it one car too hot to resist.

Formula One Champion Lewis Hamilton in Chennai

Lewis Hamilton in Chennai for a promotional event Lucky Chennai! The city had the privilege of interacting with 2008 Formula One champion, Lewis Hamilton, last Saturday. The racer was in Chennai for a Vodafone promotional event on Friday. The 25-year-old McLaren driver took the winners of the Vodafone SMS and online contest on the drive of their lives. He took them on spine-tingling laps around the Madras Motor Race Track, Irungattukottai, where a significant crowd of racing enthusiasts had gathered.

Lewis changed his car twice as it did not live up to his expectations. Seeing him drive from close quarters indeed exceeded a layman’s expectation. The moment Hamilton revved up the engine the crowd could very well feel the adrenaline rush, and when he did a 360 degree wheel spin, everyone just got what they waited for. Nobody was disappointed.

Commenting on the proposed 2011 Indian Grand Prix scheduled to take place in Noida, New Delhi, Hamilton said, “It’s been long overdue. It’s been in the pipeline for a while now, and when it does happen, I imagine it’s going to be spectacular. Judging by the enthusiasm of the crowd here, it will certainly be noisier than the Turkish Grand Prix, where the atmosphere was quite dull.”

Hamilton recalled the first-lap incident that saw him crash out of the Italian Grand Prix a week ago, and he also fell out of the lead in the driver’s championship. He said, his collision with Ferrari’s Felipe (Massa) was unfortunate and nine out of 10 times, he would have avoided it. While racing at such high speeds, one needs to make split-second decisions and Hamilton admitted he made a mistake. He added, “With five races left, I’m still in the hunt for the title but Webber, Alonso and Button are pushing hard.”

Hamilton also had his say about team orders, an issue that split Formula One following the recent controversy surrounding the German Grand Prix. Ferrari was fined for instructing its driver Felipe Massa to let teammate Fernando Alonso pass him. “We (McLaren) don’t have team orders,” he said. “I haven’t experienced it. I don’t know how Felipe, for instance, must be feeling. When you have team orders, it’s not necessarily the best driver that wins, just the guy the team favours.”

Lewis Hamilton smiled as he spoke about his younger days when he met McLaren‘s long-time Team Principal Ron Dennis for the first time. It was at an awards ceremony when he was a 10-year-old karting champion. He said, “My dad had given me this autograph book, and was pointing out to me – ‘that’s Michael Schumacher, that’s Damon Hill.’ When he told me about Ron Dennis, I had to meet him, since I was a huge fan of Ayrton Senna, who had won so many titles with McLaren.”

“So I went up to him and told him I would be winning the World Championship one day, in his car, and he said to me, ‘call me in nine years.’ Three years later, he called me himself (to offer him a place in McLaren’s Young Driver Support Programme), which was even better.”

Asked for the secret to domination in Formula One racing, he said, “It is not easy to dominate in F1 and it is hugely team work. It is off-track effort as well and depends a lot on your life off the track. It also depends on how you understand your machine. A good car, determination and an amazing understanding of equipment is very important.”

For those interested in knowing what Hamilton thinks of Indian racer Karun Chandhok, this is what he said, “Karun Chandhok is young and it is great for him and for India. I hope he gets better opportunities as he has a good future ahead of him. F1 is a tough sport especially as it also depends on how much more you can bring than your ability. I am sure some opportunity will open up for him and he will get a better car.”

Smart Car Technologies to Make Future Driving Safer

Automobile safety technologies like airbags, crumple zones and such would soon become things from the past. It would not be long when we would have cars fully equipped with a technology that can ring up emergency services in case of a crash. Scientists hope that this would soon become a reality.

The scientists revealed that the sensors embedded in future vehicles could also let the emergency services work out the severity of the crash and how many people were involved. The prediction was made at a conference considering the changes ushered in by the spread of small, smart processors. The scientists also said that the growing number of on-board computers could also bring about huge changes for the way people drive.

“The car is probably going to be the most compute-intensive possession that we will have,” said Steve Wainwright, European manager at Freescale Semiconductor which makes many of the chips inside car control systems.

According to Wainwright, average cars have at least 25 to 30 electronic control units onboard, and this number goes up to 80 when we are talking about high-end luxury cars.

These tiny computers make sure that the many car systems such as stability control, power distribution, safety and many others are functioning well. Of late, these systems have helped improve the driving skills of a person. And as the trend continues in the future, technologies such as collision detection systems and radar would become more commonplace, he said.

“All of us who feel we are better drivers now than we were 10 years ago, that’s probably because we are getting more help then we realise,” Wainwright was quoted as saying at the Future World Symposium organised by National Microelectronics Institute, UK.

Paul Burnley, an analyst from automotive market research firm SBD, says that cars in the future would be among the first to react after a crash. These cars would be able to send data about the location of the car and the number of occupants in a car to get the emergency services responding much more quickly. “More advanced systems will be capable of sending data from distributed sensors in the car to the emergency services,” he said.

He also said that as the world shifts its preferences from petrol-driven cars to hybrid and electric vehicles, smart in-car systems would become the order of the day. Wainwright believes that the growing unification of cars and computers had the potential to make driving safer and greener.

The US, already, has set aside radio spectrum for car-to-car communication systems suggesting that the future will see more inter-vehicular chatter about road conditions. Europe is also considering which radio frequency to use for this communication.

BMW 6-Series Concept Coupe Exposed

P90065366 We all know that the second-generation BMW 6-Series will be making an appearance at the Paris Motor Show. We also treated our eyes on the renderings and spy photos of the upcoming car. Finally, there’s something official. BMW has finally exposed the concept images of the second generation 6-Series few days before its global debut at the Paris show.

It appears that BMW has shown preference to Adrian Van Hooydonk’s elegant and conservative design instead of the love or hate design by Chris Bangle. Remember BMW’s Grancoupe concept revealed at the Beijing Motor Show in April? Well, the second generation has apparently taken design cues from the 4-door Grancoupe concept. The upcoming car reveals a family look and also shares most of its mechanicals with the F10 5-Series.

When will the new 6-Series go on sale after its Paris Motor Show premiere? As of now, they say the car is just a concept. However, there may be just a few changes to the production version such as different tailpipes and simpler wheels. The second generation 6-Series will likely go on sale early next year, and we hear that the soft-top will follow a few months after that.

Back to the details of the new 6-Series coupe, its simple yet elegant exteriors carry the same overall dimensions as the first-generation BMW 6-Series. However, it is a little lower, and to some extent, wider too. From the front, it looks like a shark nose is flowing into a highly sculpted bonnet. Headlamps come with LED options for the corona lenses.

The BMW kidney grille marks the body’s frontal boundary, inclining slight forward and imparting the first taste of sportiness to come. A slight angle in the upper part of the kidney grille bars flaunts hardened glass inserts and the elaborate sculpting in the new car adds an extra-luxurious touch to the BMW’s hallmark kidney grille.

At the rear, split tail lamps and LEDs glow like on the new F10 5-series. The boot sports an integrated spoiler and there’s ample boot space; 450L to be precise. On the inside, there’s more space this time as BMW has improved on the wheelbase to create more space for the second row.

Put the BMWs and Audis at fight and the Audis would be the sure winners as far as the interiors were considered. BMW realised the fact, and this time, the luxury car maker can proudly say that the new 6-series is leagues ahead of existing BMWs. However, in spite of all the tweaks, an unbiased opinion would give verdict that the overall design still falls short of Audi’s finest.

P90065367

The asymmetric dashboard in the new coupe happens to be driver focused like most BMW cabins are. Power would probably come in a range of options; a range of engines and transmissions shared on the new 5-Series. There may be everything from a 3.0-litre turbo diesel to a range-topping twin turbo V8.

We also hear there’ll be an M6 variant which will share the new BMW M5driveline. The 635d will continue with tweaks to the engine to make it cleaner while the M6 is expected to get 550-bhp motor from a twin-turbo V8 from the M5.

Maruti May Launch Diesel SX4 by March 2011

maruti-suzuki-sx4 Maruti Suzuki has two sedans in the country. However, only one of them runs in the diesel form. Maruti Suzuki has now decided to have a diesel variant of its SX4 sedan just like the diesel Swift DZire. Maruti wants to launch the new car by the end of this fiscal.

Maruti already sells the petrol-powered SX4. The new diesel-powered SX4, however, will enter the battlefield to compete against other diesel cars in the mid-C segment like the Hyundai Verna, Ford Fiesta, Chevy Optra, Fiat Linea and the new VW Vento.

Maruti Suzuki uses the power-packed 1.3-litre diesel engine sourced from Fiat in the Swift DZire. The same engine is used in the Maruti Swift and Ritz hatchbacks too. The motor squeezes out 75 bhp of power. The possibility of using the more powerful version of the 1.3-litre diesel motor was thought of since the Maruti already manufactures it locally. The costs would then certainly be low.

How about planting a 1.6-litre diesel engine in the new car? Maruti’s parent company Suzuki employs the Fiat-sourced 1.6 litre diesel engine in global markets. But, right now, we would have to rule out that possibility as Suzuki has opted out of using the same engine in the country. The auto maker says setting up a new plant for it would prove expensive.

Sources say the upcoming Maruti Suzuki SX4 diesel model is right now enduring extensive testing and is likely to be launched by March next year. Wonder why it should take so long! It’s probably the capacity constraints the car maker is experiencing due to increased demand. Maruti Swift and Swift DZire come along with long waiting periods as its four production lines in Gurgaon and Manesar are unable to meet demand.

What must have triggered the idea of diesel SX4 launch all of a sudden? Well, of late, the segment has been witnessing strong growth. These days, Indians looking for sedans go for the diesel versions as diesel is cheaper than petrol. Also, the new-gen diesel motors have proven themselves efficient and low on maintenance. Why then would someone prefer petrol over diesel?

Maruti Suzuki seems to have realized the potential of the diesel car market and thought it high time to grab its share of benefits that car makers with diesel offerings like VW, Skoda, Toyota, Ford and Hyundai are enjoying. “A diesel sedan at a reasonable price may have very high demand. But, due to the capacity constraint at Manesar, where it makes the SX4, it may be delaying the launch of the diesel version,” said the source.

Angel Broking analyst, Ms Vaishali Jajoo, says, “From 25 per cent of the overall car market, diesel car sales have risen to 30 per cent over the last few years. People prefer going for diesel sedans because of the cheaper costs of fuel and the higher fuel efficiency.”

Nissan Motors to Bring Micra Sedan by End of 2011

Nissan-Micra-Sedan-Rendering-1 Remember the last time we brought you some exclusive spy pictures of the Nissan Micra sedan undergoing testing in China? Now we have more exclusive news related to the entry level sedan from the Japanese car maker. A little birdie told us that the Nissan Micra sedan is expected to hit the Indian market towards the end of 2011. Seems like a late arrival, it is never too late though.

The Nissan Micra, which is going to add to the burgeoning list of affordable sedans in the Indian market, is based on the V-Platform. And it does not take anyone to have the brains of a neurosurgeon to guess that this car is nothing but the Micra hatch with a boot attached to its rear. The Micra sedan has picked up numerous features, such as the windshield, doors, hood, OVRMs and many other parts, from the Micra hatch. With an increased wheelbase, the car definitely looks large.

Supposedly, the Micra sedan will be locking horns with Volkswagen Vento and Honda City, which seems a little far-fetched. These two sedans are ruling the Indian roads like no one else. If looks are anything to go by, the Micra sedan does not stand a chance in front of the Vento, and it just gets worse when the Honda City comes into the scenario. Another interesting bit is that the Micra sedan would also compete with Toyota Etios, which is also getting launched in the next year.

Well, looks apart, the Micra sedan can always boast of its spacious cabin and strong build. That would definitely please the Indian crowd. The sedan will be powered by a 1.5 liter diesel engine (same as the one we have in the Micra hatch) & 1.6 liter petrol is also on the cards. At a later stage, Nissan may also provide a CVT transmission on the new sedan.

Coming to the prices, we know that Nissan Motors is using the Micra hatchback platform for the sedan. And the cost benefit that the company would enjoy by doing this would definitely be extended to the customers too, or that’s what we are hoping for.
