In the past, we witnessed some very unfortunate incidences of cars catching fire. While in India we saw the reputation of the tiny Tata Nano burning down to ashes along with its flaming body, we also had a Lamborghini Murcielago which caught the ire of the fire in Netherlands. And now, we have reports that over four 458 Italias have burned down over the last few months.
Incidents of burning Ferrari 458 Italia Sports Cars have been reported in California, Paris, China and Switzerland. And now the company has confirmed that it is recalling all 458 Italia models. Ferrari has determined the cause of the fire caused in the sports cars was related to the glue that attached the heat shield under the rear fenders.
These heat shields were attached with an adhesive and became flammable under high temperature. Apparently when the 458 is driven like the way a Ferrari is supposed to be driven, like a little hard, in high ambient temperatures, the adhesive that holds the rear wheel arch in place, gets overheated and melts. As a result, the wheel arch and heat shields come loose. Later the glue or the heat shields can ignite, causing the car to catch fire.
Ferrari has been quick to jump to action, and the company has recalled more than 1,200 examples of the supercar. So far Ferrari has sold 1,248 Italias in Europe and these cars will be now be retrofitted with a more secure fastening system that keeps the arches and shields in place. Modification on these cars is likely to begin very soon. And what’s more, people who were saddened by the loss of their 458 sports car would each receive a new model.
The Ferrari 458 Italia, which was introduced in 2009, is a midengine 560-horsepower sports car that sells for more than $200,000.
