Lamborghini’s New Advanced Composites Research Centre

carbon-fiber-Lamborghini Lamborghini has been quite busy with a number of things of late. Recently Lamborghini launched the Murcielago LP670-4 SV in India through Exclusive Motors, which is the official distributor and retailer of Lamborghini cars in India.

Additionally, the company has also announced a new Advanced Composites Research Centre (ACRC) at its headquarters in Sant’Agata Bolognese, which will be dedicated for conducting research and development on carbon-fibre elements.

Consisting of two facilities, the new Lamborghini Advanced Composite Research Center is spread over a massive 2,600 square meters. The centre will not only undertake research on cutting-edge carbon fibre production, but on design processes too. The facility currently engages a team of 30 people, engineers and technicians who develop vehicle components of all shapes and size.

Not only that, the team also develops prototypes and the associated tools, production tools, and optimized production technologies. The team makes use of the latest measuring devices, automated cutting and casting equipment, autoclaves, presses, and a Resin Transfer Moulding (RTM).

“The consistent development of carbon-fibre technology is a key element of our strategy,” says Stephan Winkelmann, President and CEO of Automobili Lamborghini S.p.A. “The most important parameter for super sportscars is, now as in the future, the weight-to-power ratio; therefore, as there is a limit to power increase due to emission regulations, we must work on weight reduction. The real difference is in the correct use of technologies and materials to satisfy technical and financial concerns.”

The use of carbon fibre is becoming increasingly popular among car makers. The use of carbon-fibre technology not only makes cars lighter, but also improves their fuel consumption and CO2 emissions. A super sports car that is built using composite materials in carbon fibre boasts of improved acceleration as well as superior handling & ride quality.

lamborghinicfcenter

And that’s not all. The big brains at the Lamborghini ACRD have come up with a new process which combines the advantages of existing methods. Now, Lamborghini can use minimal pressure and relatively low temperatures to manufacture carbon-fibre components, thereby achieving higher process speeds, lower costs, and extremely light tooling.

The Italian sportscar manufacturer has vast experience in composite elements. And you will find it surprising that way back in 1983, it was Lamborghini which unveiled the first carbon fibre based chassis prototype on the Countach. Since then, the car manufacturer has employed the lightweight, though expensive, material in all of its vehicles.

Audi Pledges to Avoid Misfills at Fuel Stations

Fuel-Cap-Port Last year, BMW introduced a new mechanism in all of its diesel vehicles. Audi seems to be following its rival. Oh yes, by 2015, Audi would like to occupy the numero uno position in the luxury car market. Today, let’s have a look at this new feature that Audi would introduce in its cars next year.

With the gap in fuel prices narrowing by the day, we have the number of petrol cars too increasing. Now, when there are so many petrol and diesel cars in the country, and each model coming with different types of engines there sure exists a possibility of human error at the fuel station. Diesel engines in today’s cars are so refined that it becomes really difficult to distinguish them from their petrol counterparts.

Our friends at the fuel stations have hundreds of cars to attend to every day. Don’t you think a wrong fuel can go into your engine? As a matter of fact, there is a high possibility of that happening. The expensive damage it causes to your car is what has started bothering car makers and they are coming up with better technologies. To make the fuelling experience enjoyable, Audi has developed a new fuel filler cap that prevents petrol cars from being fuelled with diesel and vice-versa. Sounds great?

The larger diesel nozzles won’t fit in the filler neck of a petrol car. However, the smaller gas nozzles fit well in the diesel necks. Now, Audi has developed a new type of fuel filler neck that has special contact points. These contact points open an internal fuel flap only when the larger diesel pump nozzle applies pressure on them. The smaller diameter petrol nozzles do not make contact, ensuring that the filler flap remains closed to prevent access to the reservoir. The mechanism ensures that only the right fuel gets into the fuel tank.

The technology may seem silly to many, but it is surely going to benefit diesel car users by blocking the wrong fuel from gaining an entry into the vehicle. By doing so, the owners also benefit from the expensive damage the new car would have suffered. Audi A4, A5 and Q5 TDI models from 2011 will carry this practical feature. We can expect it in our country too and we also hope other car makers make use of a similar mechanism or come up with improvised versions of the same.

Maruti’s Quest of Market Share Takes it to Rural India

suzuki-logo The metamorphosis of the small car segment in India has been nothing but phenomenal in the past few years. And car makers which earlier enjoyed unrivalled supremacy in the segment are now finding it difficult to maintain a firm grip on their market share. There was a time when people rushed to the Maruti Suzuki dealers for all their small car needs, but the newer players in the trade have changed the way one shops for small cars now.

As we have said a number of times before, times have changed. And Maruti Suzuki’s market share has been taxed greatly by the new entrants, such as Chevrolet, Hyundai and the more recent ones including Ford and Nissan, in the small car space. Since the start of 2010, Maruti has seen a minor drop in its total market share across the country compared with the earlier 57 per cent.

But all hope is not lost yet. Maruti Suzuki, which is the top most car manufacturer in the country, is now planning to regain its lost glory by pushing its sales in the rural regions of India. Though the export operations of the car maker would continue like before, Maruti would now pay more attention towards the domestic market. Maruti Suzuki plans to increase its share of rural sales from the current 17 per cent to 20 per cent.

Maruti Suzuki believes that the increased sales push in the rural Indian market would compensate well for its dipping market share in the urban markets.

“In rural India many of the vehicles that we have do extremely well like the Alto, Omni and Maruti 800. These are all models which are tailor made for the rural markets,” said Shushank Srivastava, CGM – marketing of Maruti Suzuki India.

Maruti is also expecting the monsoon to bring some joys in the camp by providing a rural boost. But there are other strategies in the kitty too. Maruti Suzuki has appointed rural sales executives to target remote areas that currently have no dealerships.

Maruti is also planning to incentivize sales through attractive promotional sales and service packages. But this will come at a cost, alright! While Maruti will achieve volume sales, it will do so at the expense of a dip in margins.

Maruti’s troubles don’t end just there. The company is facing another difficulty where the company’s suppliers are not able to meet the huge market demand. This creates the much-hated situation where Maruti will have to wait for the cars to get into pipeline and increase the waiting period.

Maruti has always been at the pinnacle of the small car market in India, but with the increasing competition, the company is planning to aggressively target the other segments too.

The Newly Launched Nissan Micra – All You Need to Know

2011-Nissan-Micra We first had the Micra displayed in showrooms followed by bookings. Then, we had the Saawariya boy endorsing the Nissan offering. Now we have the actual product launch. The long-awaited Nissan Micra, the car maker’s first made-in-India compact hatchback has finally been launched. Sales of this car, built on Nissan’s versatile ‘V’ platform begin today. In short, the Micra is a reliable, stylish, safe and eco-friendly car for people who enjoy everyday driving.

The new car comes in three standard variants of XE (Entry), XL (Mid) and XV (Top). While the exteriors have an option of six colours ranging from Sunlight Orange to Brick Red, Pacific Blue, Storm White, Blade Silver and Onyx Black, the interiors exhibit high levels of sophistication with black and the XV also comes in griege.

Nissan feels that the Micra is the right product at the right time that will offer customers a good means of urban mobility with a complete package of performance, features, safety and comfort. With a host of unique features, Nissan expects the Micra to perform real well in the Indian market and carve a niche of its own compared to other competitive models in this segment. Let’s see if the new car lives up to its creator’s expectations.

2011-Nissan-Micra-Car-Dash

Nissan says that this is just the beginning of a serious foray at the mass market by Nissan in India. The 2000 pre-order bookings for the Micra well exceeded the car maker’s expectations. While a comprehensive multi-media marketing campaign featuring Ranbir Kapoor would further catalyse sales, Nissan also plans to use some non-conventional forms of media to maximize the product visibility.

The company also wants to ensure good after sales service. There would be over 30 Nissan dealers in India by the end of this fiscal year. Nissan has also partnered with banking institutions to offer easy financing and loans disbursement schemes to its retail customers.

The Micra has been engineered for easy handling and agile performance while delivering class-competitive mileage numbers (18.06 kmpl). The novel features introduced in the class like the Intelligent Key plus Immobilizer, push-button engine start-stop system and electric foldable mirror certainly take the competition to a whole new level. There are other grand features too like the intelligent multi-display meter that offers real time fuel-economy info, cruising range and outside temperature. The driver power windows are fitted with ‘one touch up/down’ feature along with a pinch guard.

New-Nissan-Micra-Dashboard

The unique double-layer integrated grille and the distinctive arched side window line add style to the Micra’s appearance. 3780 mm long, 1665 mm wide and 1530 mm high with a long wheelbase of 2450 mm makes the Micra so roomy that it’s like a palace in a market full of cramped small cars. The boomerang-shaped grooves on the roof add to the roominess. The new car has a 251-litre boot space. The Micra happens to be the lightest yet well-built hatchback in its segment and has a class-topping turning radius of 4.65m.

The dashboard design flaunts the twin-bubble theme; a circular instrumentation panel and a similarly shaped glove box compartment on the passenger side. The micro-grain technology used reduces the plastic-like feeling and ensures quality and finish for visual appeal.

The all-new Nissan Micra draws power from an all-new HR12 DOHC 12-valves 1.2-litre, 3-cylinder petrol engine. It spews out 75 bhp at 6000 rpm, while the torque output is 104 Nm at 4000 rpm. The engine has been mated with a 5-speed manual gearbox which enables the 1.2-litre engine to achieve economy and quick acceleration. Several new technologies ensure reduced C02 emissions.

The Micra’s compact design, mounted onto Nissan’s new signature V-platform ensures minimal disturbance at the rear with maximum trunk space without harming the car’s on-road dynamics. The front MacPherson Strut and rear Torsion Beam swallow in all the bumps without passing them on to the occupants.

Nissan’s novel “Safety Shield” concept takes care of safety. All variants including the entry level (XE) are equipped with driver airbag. The top variant (XV) comes with added safety like Driver + Front Passenger airbag, ABS with EBD and Brake Assist. The Micra comes with a standard manufacturers’ warranty of 2 years/50,000kms. Furthermore, ‘Nissan Care’ – A Customer Contact Centre has been set up.

2011-Nissan-Micra-Rear

Nissan is also introducing a host of customer care and service schemes including Extended Warranty and Roadside Assistance for its products starting with the Micra. Finally coming to the pricing, the Nissan Micra has been priced aggressively. The ex-showroom Delhi prices for Nissan Micra are Rs. 3,98,000 for XE (entry), Rs. 4,69,500 for XL (mid) and Rs. 528,800 for XV (top) variants.

Additionally, in a competitive move, the prices will be uniform across the country to offer a fair and equitable benefit to all customers. Thus, the ex-showroom prices will be uniform across pan India except for states/cities where differential VAT, entry tax, Octroi and other local taxes applicable would be levied extra.

Audi A1 Likely to Reach India Soon?

Audi A1 Compact Car Even though Audi has not been able to sidetrack its German luxury car manufacturing counterparts in the Indian market, it is continuously overshooting its sales targets. Not one to be intimidated by giants like BMW and Mercedes Benz, Audi has quite a few plans ahead that will help it invade the Indian market even deeper.

Audi has shown its commitment to the Indian market by starting off with the assembly operations of its Q5 compact SUV at its Aurangabad facility in India. The German company would soon launch the Q3 mini-SUV internationally in 2011, and also has plans of assembling the Q3 in India to compete directly with the BMW X1 in mid-2011. In line with the BMW X1 price; the Audi Q3 is likely to be priced in the category of Rs 23 to 28 lakh.

But there are other grand plans too. And the one which absolutely will set the hearts racing is the Audi A1. Perhaps, it would be the biggest international launch from Audi. The Audi A1 is one of the most stylish looking 3-door hatchback that would compete with Mini and Alfa Romeo Mito internationally. Chances are high that the company would launch the hatchback in India too.

The important question is: How would this car fare in India? The 11 per thousand car owners ratio in India would likely prove a fruitful venture for the car maker, though not so much as to make BMW bring the Mini to India. The high powered Audi Sport and S-Line variants could prove to be a safe bet for Audi.

The Audi A1 shares its platform with the Volkswagen Polo and Skoda Fabia, and is below 4 meters in length. Audi would likely equip the A1 with the 1.2 liter TSI engine that produces 104 bhp and 175 Nm of torque. The engine would be paired with a 7-speed S-Tronic dual clutch transmission. Now, only if the carmaker is careful enough to price it decently, say in the range of 16 to 20 lakh Rupees, the car will definitely find an audience in India.

Audi R8 E-Tron

On the international front, the Audi R8 e-tron EV is all set to make its mark by participating in the three stages of the “Silvretta E-Auto Rally Montafon 2010.” The competition will see the latest electric vehicles race against each other over 10 special stages. The car will cruise through the Austrian state of Vorarlberg along a 104.08-mile path. And the lucky ones to drive the car are Audi board member Michael Dick and factory Audi racer Lukas Luhr.

The Audi R8 e-tron generates 313 bhp, and with a top speed of 124 mph, takes just about 4.8-second to sprint from 0-62 mph. Audi says that the prototype/concept car exhibits “extremely neutral” handling, which is in part because of the four-motor system’s ability to minutely and instantaneously add power where it’s needed to keep the car on its intended course, without bringing down the speed.

Jaguar’s New Model Expansion Plans

Jaguar's proposed BMW 3-series rival If you remember, the F-Type concept was showcased at the Detroit auto show way back in the year 2000. Now after ten long years Jaguar is finally thinking of building a smaller sports car. Very recently, in an interview with Automobilwoche(German auto magazine), the CEO of Jaguar’s parent Tata Motors, Carl-Peter Forster, confirmed that the XE and a few other new Jags were being engineered for production.

Forster had left GM Europe late last year only to find him serving JLR/ Tata as the CEO. It’s not long since the man joined the brand that he seems to be having plenty of thoughts and ideas going on in his mind. He was quoted saying that he wanted to quickly fill gaps in both Jaguar Land Rover and Range Rover assemblies. “We need a successor to the X-Type,” Forster added, “and finally the small sports car that has been discussed for so long. We need both cars in several variations.”

Jaguar car

So for now, as far as Land Rover is concerned, the new Evoque and an all-new Defender may soon surprise everyone. Jaguar on the other hand will have the XE and a replacement for the X-Type sedan added to the inventory. Jaguar is also working on a new-generation medium-size rear-drive aluminium platform that will strengthen the new X-Type, the F-Type and the replacement for today’s XF. “We had to initially consider what the brand should look like and what models we should have. We are building additional variations on existing models, launching new model lines, and investing in new engines,” said Ralf Speth, CEO of Jaguar Land Rover.

As per Forster’s words, we believe that the XE itself will come in several forms; may be a coupe, roadster, 2+2 hardtop, and a hardcore R model. The XE that we are talking about is believed to be an heir to the original E-Type and could be offered with an electric powertrain. However, we also hear that the car will employ a range of six-cylinder engines. Let’s wait and watch.

Imagine the next-generation XF undergoing a major transformation, and that’s what will be the XE’s foundation. The XE platform will also share platform with the XK and the successor to the X-Type. As we all know, Jaguar’s last X-Type hadn’t actually helped the company a lot when it came to sales. So the car maker hopes that the car’s replacement works the magic. The new X-Type is expected to pose a strong competition to the BMW 3 Series. For now, expect the new X-Type to be offered in sedan, coupe, and convertible forms.

Red Jag

Hold on; that’s not all! There’s more! Jaguar‘s engineers are also working on a supercar based off the XK. This supercar is believed to be pitted against the Porsche 911 GT2 which thrusts forward with the help of an immensely powerful 530 bhp 3.6-litre flat 6-cylinder engine. As for Jaguar, the hottest XK so far is the XKR 75, which extracts 523 bhp from a supercharged 5.0-liter V-8 motor. Let’s wait for info on the new car. Development of all three models recently began, so if all goes well, look for the finished products to emerge in the next two to three years.

Gullwing Mercedes Arrives in India on 15th July

SLS-AMG-coming-to-India The long, long wait will finally be over tomorrow. The Mercedes Benz SLS AMG, which was unveiled during the 2010 Auto Expo, New Delhi, created quite a frenzy among the multi-millionaire Indian car enthusiasts. And now, it is confirmed that the Mercedes Benz SLS AMG will be launched in the Indian market tomorrow.

Dr. Wilfried Aulbur, MD & CEO Mercedes Benz India has announced the arrival of the SLS AMG in the subcontinent and confirmed the date as 15th July. “Yes, we are looking to launch the model on 15th of this month in New Delhi. To be imported as a CBU, it will attract more than 100 per cent import duty and will be sold for above Rs. 2 crore. The price will vary among our prospective customers depending on the customisation sought”, a company spokesperson said.

The SLS AMG comes with a technology package that will guarantee driving dynamics of the highest standard. The SLS AMG is powered by AMG 6.3-litre V8 front-mid-engine that can generate as much as 571 bhp and 650 Nm of torque. The engine is paired with a seven-speed double-declutch transmission in a transaxle configuration.

A front/rear weight distribution of 47 to 53 per cent and the vehicle’s low centre of gravity would ensure smooth performance even on the Indian roads. And what’s more, the Mercedes Gullwing will exhilarate the drivers with its acceleration capability that reads 0 to 100 km/h in 3.8 seconds. The electronically limited top speed of 317 km/h just adds icing on the cake.

The super luxury sports car from Mercedes is expected to be priced around Rs 5-6 Crore in India. Now that’s a lot of money, isn’t it! The Indian price tag of the SLS AMG is quite high when compared to its price in the European market, but that’s partly because of the high import duties levied on CBUs in India. A CBU attracts 120 per cent duty on the car’s price, of which basic customs duty would be around 106 per cent, the remaining falling under countervailing (CVD) and additional duties.

But is the high price of the supercar going to dampen the enthusiasm of the Indians? We say no. According to a report in a popular Indian newspaper, the company managed to get quite a few confirmed bookings within days after it was showcased at the Auto Expo. For many Indians, who are born with a silver spoon up their mouths, it is money well spent.

The growth curve of the luxury sports car segment in India has taken an upward flight. The Indian luxury car market is around 10,000 cars a year. But as the Indian economy gets stronger, the size of the market is also expected to grow significantly.

Ferrari to Enter India by End of 2010

ferrari_india-2 Aston Martin, Bugatti, Lamborghini, and many more; we have them all in India. What supercar is India missing on then? Ferrari? Oh yeah, it would be so good to have Ferrari dealerships in our country too. Not to worry, Luca Di Montezemolo has begun looking at India rather seriously. Read on and you’ll know.

Just over a month ago, Ferrari President Luca di Montezemolo was in London for a series of business meetings and was interviewed by BBC journalists for their TV and radio programmes. This was the gist of what Montezemolo told BBC: “Ferrari is synonymous with technological innovation. Into India by the end of the year and a 12-cylinder “open-top” in the near future.”

During the interview, BBC journalists commented on Maranello’s consistently growing sales and how output held steady during the year when the world economic crisis was at its most severe. Montezemolo repeated Ferrari’s open secret: “We aren’t changing the company strategy of always building fewer cars than the market demands.” Fewer cars than what the market demands? How will that help? Any other car maker would just try its best to increase output when demand demanded it. However, Ferrari’s strategy ensures it maintains the brand’s exclusivity.

The next few words that came out of the Ferrari President’s mouth were just amazing. He announced that the brand would launch in India by the end of 2010. This was a confirmation of the crucial role that the emerging markets would play for the company which exports over 90 per cent of its cars. But, this year end may be a little too early, don’t you think so? Well, Ferrari must be having its plans and we may see the car maker in India as stated.

Ferrari manufactures road-going sportscars, supercars and grand tourers and sells over 6500 units a year. Its inventory includes the California, 458 Italia, the 599 GTB and the 612 Scaglietti. We hear that that Ferrari has plans of opening two dealerships in two of the largest metros in India, New Delhi and Mumbai. The first one will most likely be located in South Mumbai.

Earlier, Ferrari had hinted that any move into India would involve Tata Motors in one way or the other. So, we now feel Tata Motors will possibly be Ferrari’s sole Indian distributor and dealer. Ferrari and Fiat are co-group companies and Fiat has a strong partnership with Tata Motors in India. Now, with Ratan Tata on the board of Fiat Auto, this arrangement seems most likely and convenient.

Did you know Ratan Tata drives the only known Ferrari California in existence in India? What we can say now is, long live the relationship! India’s supercar market too may see a lot of competition in the near future. Bugatti recently appointed its dealership cum distributor for India while Aston Martin has appointed two dealers, both in Mumbai and New Delhi.

Fiat to Launch 1.9ltr Linea in Argentina, How About India?

New 1.9 L Fiat Linea in Argentina No one (barring a countable few) would contradict the fact that the Fiat Linea is one of the best looking models in its segment in the Indian market. Be it the build quality or interior space, the sedan scores way ahead of the competition. Fiat is taking a step further to lure the audience, at least in Argentina. The new Linea would come strapped with all the accessories, plus light alloy wheels on 17” tyres, beige leather seats and a host of other interiors features.

This new Linea is powered by 1.9ltr petrol engine which is capable of developing a maximum power output of 132hp at peak. The features that we just mentioned are available on the two top end trim levels as options.

“This is aimed to enrich the model with sporty aesthetics but also elegant, respecting the image and ‘design ‘of the vehicle “Says Fiat Spa. And that’s not all, along with the manual; the new Linea would also be available with an automatic transmission gearbox.

It has been almost two years since Fiat launched the Linea in India, and since then it has become one of the most competitive vehicles in the family sedan segment. But the Indian Linea, which is available in 1.3-litre Multijet diesel engine and a 1.4-litre FIRE engine, is mighty underpowered. We are still waiting for the T-Jet to be featured in the Linea. And it is time Fiat realised that the way ahead may not be easy as it has been so far.

As it is, Volkswagen has already unveiled the Polo based sedan, the Vento. The entry level sedan is up for a launch in the upcoming months.

The journey of Volkswagen Vento in India is not going to be very easy. It is going to face some tough competition from already proven vehicles such as Honda City, Fiat Linea, Ford Fiesta and new entrant Hyundai Verna Transform. But Vento has got some real smart weapons like new styling and interior space and the VW build quality to boast of.

Now the question is: How does Fiat plan to counter attack the upcoming competitions. We speculate that Fiat would either launch the Linea T Jet or it will bring a revamped Linea. Additionally, we can also expect the Italian car maker to bring the 1.9ltr petrol engine Linea that will be launched in Argentina.

Fiat is all set to roll out its 90 bhp Punto Sport in India on the 16th of this month. The same car was launched in Argentina some time back.
