2011 Mercedes-Benz CLS Sedan Revealed

2011-mercedes-benz-cls-rendering-front-three-quarterThe Mercedes SLS launched in India just the other day, and today, we have something more to reveal about the luxury car maker. Somehow, Mercedes’ secrets do not remain as secrets for too long. Their car images get leaked too easily. Recently a visitor to the company’s headquarters in Stuttgart, Germany, spotted a 2011 CLS sedan. And lo! We have the details with us.

The current CLS-Class possesses the strong, emotive charisma of a coupe while offering the comfort and practicality of a sedan. Just like the current model, the car that was spied too looked like a sporty coupe, but was wrapped in a sedan body. To capture the image of a car so beautiful, with the C-pillar flowing into the trunk area, it must have been such a delight! The short window openings, bordered by the chrome trim, still hold on to the coupe theme.

Making the car look even more sophisticated is a chrome strip around its lower waist. With plenty of new features, the car gets an updated look. On the whole, the car’s character appears sportier than the rounded lines we have been seeing on the latest Mercedes models. The all-new front grille is much more upright than the present one and offers a larger cooling area.Mercedes-Benz-CLS-Spy-Pics

The 2011 CLS-Class seems to have lost weight compared to its predecessor. Then there’s LED lighting everywhere that brightens the car. The headlights come in a new design and the taillights appear to be coming closer. The interiors are sufficiently spacious. Finished in leather and wood, the panel appeared to be the same as the current CLS-Class.

To get details about the powertrain options, we would have to wait a while. Will the new car sport engine options as the current model? A 3.0-liter V6 motor comes standard with the current CLS 350 and a 5.0L V8 engine comes standard with the CLS 500. While the V6 churns out 272 bhp, the 5.0L V8 eight-cylinder unit generates 306 bhp. The CLS 63 AMG draws power from an AMG 6.2-litre V8 motor that spews out 514 bhp. Will any of these find a place in the new model?

2011-mercedes-benz-cls-rendering-rear-three-quarter The current CLS-Class comes strapped with a 7-speed automatic transmission, 7G-TRONIC, as standard. Mercedes had claimed that the CLS-Class was the world’s first passenger car with a transmission of that type that contributed enormously to the car’s strong acceleration and awesome fuel consumption. So, will the car maker fit in the same transmission in the new model, or, will it enhance the same?

According to Mercedes, the CLS 350 six-cylinder Coupe climbs from 0 to 100 km in 7.0 seconds and reaches a maximum speed of 250 km. The CLS-Class V8 Coupe and the CLS 63 AMG can accelerate from 0 to 100 kilometers in 6.1 seconds and the CLS 63 AMG can reach a top speed of 250 km/h. Now, we can expect the new luxury car to perform better, can’t we?

Nano Becomes Costlier by Nearly Rs 6,000… Feasible to Buy One?

The profit made by the rickshaw wallahs in India is simply unimaginable. If a part of it comes by cheating commuters, the rest of the money just explains how much we Indians depend on the rickshaws. So, now that we know everybody is so dependent on such a transport facility, why not go for a better ride? That’s exactly what the government has begun thinking.

Tata NanoTransport minister R Ashoka has said that the government is thinking of purchasing 10,000 Tata Nano cars and renting them out in Bangalore. The profit would be shared. While the government enjoys 40 per cent of the profit, the driver can enjoy the remaining 60 per cent. The government may invest for the cars from its own resources or take loans.

The arguments concerning the viability of the Nano replacing auto rickshaws have begun. “There is not much difference in the cost between an auto rickshaw and a Nano. We continue to receive complaints about auto drivers. Moreover, their number in the city is insufficient compared to the population,’’ Ashoka said.

Meanwhile, Tata Motors has hiked the price of the toddler. The Nano ride would now be costlier by nearly Rs 6,000. Tata Motors blames the growing input costs. We recently had Ford, Toyota and GM increasing prices for the very same reason. So, it certainly doesn’t appear like Tata Motors is doing something very wrong. Also, just as promised, the first one lakh customers of the Nano get to enjoy the low price. The entry-level price of the world’s cheapest car is Rs 1.23 Lakh while a deluxe variant costs Rs 1.72 Lakh.

Around 45,000 Nanos have already been delivered since July 2009. The remainder of the 1 lakh customers who were selected through a lottery last year from 2.06 lakh bookings will probably have their cars delivered by end of this year.

Tata Motors has begun intimating the price rise to customers who did not make the cut, but held on to bookings. There has been a sudden sharp increase in input prices. However, the Tata Nano will be seeing just a 3-4 per cent rise in price depending on the model. The car maker calls the rise ‘fairly nominal’ as it joins a handful of car makers like Maruti Suzuki and Hyundai Motor India that have raised prices by nearly four times in a year to balance growing input costs.

Tata Motors has also announced that it would reward customers for bearing with the company through a delay in delivery due to capacity constraints. It will offer customers a choice of one-year free annual maintenance contract, or free accessories worth Rs 4,000, or an extended warranty.

Tata Motors has been gradually increasing the Nano’s production at its Sanand plant. The plant can produce 2.5 Lakh units a year. Once production at that reaches its peak, Tata Motors may export the Nano to overseas markets like Asia and Africa. It has already started work on the car’s marketing in the U.S.

Mercedes SLS AMG Officially Launched in India

2010_Mercedes_Benz_SLS_AMG A very auspicious day for car launches, or so it seems. Fiat India today launched the more powerful 90 bhp Punto here, and Mercedes Benz India has finalised on the same date to launch its much publicised SLS AMG. Thanks to Mercedes, rich Indians will now have means of flaunting their money. Ever since it was unveiled during the Auto Expo 2010, sports car lovers in India had been waiting for this piece of excellence to be launched.

The super luxury sports car, SLS AMG, has been launched today. The SLS AMG was supposed to be launched on 15th of July, but due to some reasons the launch had to be postponed by a day.

Mercedes Benz was the first of the German luxury car makers to foray into the Indian market and the car maker seems upbeat about launching its latest super luxury offering in the country. “We are very excited to come with SLS in India. We have started the production couple of weeks ago in Germany, there is no time lag to launch the vehicle in India,” Mercedes Benz India Managing Director and CEO Wilfried Aulbur said.

The Mercedes Benz SLS AMG is priced between Rs 2 crore and Rs 2.5 crore in India. That’s mainly because the sports car is being imported as a Completely Built Unit, and thus attracts heavy import duties. But the high price of the SLS AMG should not pose a problem to the multi millionaire Indians. Further the price will vary among the prospective customers depending on the customisation level sought by them.

2010-mercedesbenz-sls-amg Rear

The SLS AMG comes with a technology package that will guarantee driving dynamics of the highest standard. The SLS AMG is powered by AMG 6.3-litre V8 front-mid-engine that can generate as much as 571 bhp and 650 Nm of torque. The engine is paired with a seven-speed double-declutch transmission in a transaxle configuration. The 8 cylinder engine can accelerate from 0-100 kmph in just 3.8 seconds. Now, that’s a figure which is bound to excite the people who love to burn some rubber on tracks.

Mercedes India has already received quite a few confirmed bookings for the SLS AMG but the company says that there will be a waiting period 6-8 months to deliver the car after booking.

Fiat Punto 90 bhp Reaches India

Fiat Punto 90 HP About a month ago, Fiat launched the 90bhp Punto in Argentina, and we were all hoping for the early launch of the car in India too. So here’s the wish come true for many who were waiting for the more powerful Punto to make its debut in India. Fiat India today launched the Punto 90 HP version in New Delhi. The new more powerful Punto diesel has been priced at Rs 6.79 lakh ex-showroom Delhi.

This more powerful Punto is sure to make an impact on the speed loving Indian crowd. Powered by an 89 bhp 1.3-litre Multijet diesel engine, the new Punto 90 bhp has lifted its engine from the Linea and is now way more (15 bhp)powerful than the current 75 bhp Multijet diesel engine found in the Punto. This has been made possible with a re-tuned engine that features a variable geometry turbocharger instead of the fixed geometry turbocharger found on the 75 bhp Punto.

“The launch of Grande Punto 90 HP multijet is testament to Fiat’s commitment to innovation and consumer satisfaction. The car is aimed at consolidating our position within the ‘performance diesel’ segment, which has been relatively untapped until now,” Fiat India President and CEO Rajeev Kapoor said.

The new Punto can now reach the 0-100kmph speed about 3.8 seconds quicker than the current 75 bhp car. Thanks to the new engine, the new Punto can now do a top speed that is about 10 kph more than the regular Punto. The 90 bhp Punto, is definitely fast but there seems to be a little stagnation issues with in-gear acceleration. Additionally, you can also notice some improvement when it comes to performance and driveability. The interior quality, after feedbacks from customers, of the Punto has improved too.

Fiat India claims that the Punto 90 HP would give a mileage of 20 km per litre. The Punto 90 bhp is available in a range of attractive colours including Vossa Nova White, Exotica Red, Medium Grey, Foxtrot Azure and Tuscan Wine.

Fiat Punto rear

As of now, the Italian car manufacturer has launched the Punto 90 bhp in the Emotion variant only, and will be sold alongside the 75 bhp Punto. Fiat also offers the Punto in other engine options: a 1.2-litre and 1.4-litre Petrol FIRE that produce 67 bhp and 88 bhp respectively.

Prices of the new Punto may pose a problem though. Launched at a price of Rs 6.79 lakh (Ex-showroom New Delhi), the Punto 90 bhp may not appeal to everyone’s wallets.

2011 Land Rover Freelander Pictures Leaked?

Land Rover Freelander We all know by now that Tata Motors will start assembling the Freelander locally in the country by the end of the year. We also know that the launch of the car will happen sometime mid next year. Now we got our hands on some pics of the 2011 model year Land Rover Freelander. These are possibly the pictures of the car that have been leaked from a brochure.

Tata Motors bought the JLR brand from Ford Motors in 2008, and since then the Indian car maker has been reaping the benefits as the demand for the JLR vehicles have gone up across the world. JLR has four outlets in India, and recently the super luxurious Jaguar XJ was launched in the country. The new Freelander may further enhance the brand’s sales numbers.

The Freelander was supposed to safely rest in the green room at least till August 2010’s Moscow Motor Show or September’s Paris Motor Show. How on earth did the screen disappear only to find the baby Land Rover exposed? A while ago, in one of our today’s posts, we told you that the camouflaged Evoque fleet was spotted on the roads. Now, at least till that arrives in the market, the Freelander seems to be a model of great importance to Land Rover. The Freelander will enter India as a completely knocked down unit and will possibly reach the country by 2011.

Land Rover Freelander India Bound

You can see that the new Freelander flaunts a new face with slight changes here and there, in the radiator grille, bumper, lights and wheels. Changes are hard to notice. The car has the typical Land Rover mesh grille. However, a second glance at it will tell you that the grille has now been raised to have it in the same horizontal line as that of the headlamps. Looks neater! There’s also the additional under-body protection sneaking under the bumper as if to protect the sump below. For more info on the looks, let’s wait for the Moscow Motor Show commencing next month.

Land Rover Freelander Rear

The Freelander is likely to come with a 2.2-litre turbo-diesel engine that expels 160 bhp and is coupled to either a 6-speed manual or a ‘Commandshift’ 6-speed automatic. Rs 15 Lakh! At the current exchange rates, that’s where the new Freelander price begins in the UK. Now add some more amount as tax to get it here and that will be your car’s value.

Think realistically, and you can expect the new car to hit the market with a tag of Rs 25 Lakh. Competing with the BMW X1, ah? So, it’s now left to you to decide if it’s the German engineering or the good old British charm that you would be paying for.

Carazoo Prediction Comes True: Figo Sales Booking Reaches 25,000 Milestone

ford-figo A couple of months back, we had predicted in the editorial of our monthly newsletter “Car Mantra” that the Figo would reach the milestone of 25,000 sales booking pretty soon after its launch. Only we did not know that it would happen in fast forward mode.

Ford India has announced that the Figo has crossed 25,000 sales bookings in close to hundred days, since it was launched in March 2010. Figo has established its reputation as one of the most in-demand cars in the Indian small car market.

Ford Figo has not only elevated the image of Ford India but also the sales performance. Figo has helped the company drive the sales volume by a whopping 235% as compared to the year-on-year first half sales. And the universal appeal of this Ford hatch is proved by the fact that it has struck a chord with customers across the Tier I, II and III markets in the country.

“Reaching the 25,000 sales booking milestone in close to 100 days continues the Figo’s remarkable rise and rise in popularity among Indian consumers,” said Michael Boneham, president and managing director, Ford India.

“Figo’s success has exceeded expectations in terms of sales and target markets. Our debut compact car offering is being very well received by a wide range of customers and this response has been instrumental in our efforts to increase market share.”

Targeting more than 70 percent of the country’s prospective new vehicle buyers, the very popular Ford Figo has contributed greatly in driving growth across all the markets (Tier I, II and III) in India. Figo has pushed the sales figures of the company too. Ford sales volume, in the January-June period doubled in the Tier 1 markets including Mumbai (234%); Chennai (279%) and Delhi and the NCR region (223%). And when it comes to regional sales, we see a similar trend – east (339%); west (277%), north (212%) and south (127%).

Ford Figo Bookings graph-going-up

And in some regions of the country, we can see more than double and triple fold growth in Tier II markets such as Chandigarh, Ahmedabad, Pune, Kochi, Coimbatore, Indore, Bhopal and Jaipur and Tier III markets such as Dehradun, Trichy, Nashik, Aurangabad and Kanpur.

Ford India recently found another moment to celebrate when it first exported 1,200 Ford Figos to its subsidiary in South Africa. Overall, Figo has helped Ford India register more than double the volumes of 235% year-on-year in half year sales, selling a total of 32,755 vehicles compared to 13,897 units last year.

The future of the Figo looks as promising as its present. And the company is supporting the Figo campaign by a number of Ford India-led service and sales programmes including expansion of its current dealership network and after-sales service across the country.

The Camouflaged Range Rover Evoque on the Roads

land-rover_range-rover-evoque-camo-Hello London Imagine a car with ‘Hello India’ written on it. Great idea, or, would it be a laughing stock? Would it look like a colourful mobile marketing vehicle or would it brighten your day? Now, we do have a Range Rover Evoque zipped up in purple camouflage with ‘Hello London’ inscribed on the side. It seems to be the British brand’s new idea of underground prototype testing.

To evoke interest in the car, a whole fleet of these camouflaged Evoques has been commissioned to 10 cities across the globe. Each of the 10 prototypes has a different set of uniform in order to grab the public’s attention. Land Rover is believed to be introducing the car London, New York, Sao Paulo, Paris, Milan, Madrid, Berlin, Sydney, Shanghai and Moscow to start with. Around 17,000 components will be individually tested during the global testing programme over millions of miles. Great! But, will the fleet successfully educate consumers about the Range Rover’s smallest and most fuel-efficient vehicle? Well, too early to predict that!

land-rover_range-rover-evoque_prf_ns_71510_717

Did you realize, Range Rover hasn’t mentioned Victoria Beckham in its statement about the camo fleet? However, never mind that as the pictures speak for themselves. The former Spice Girl turned fashion designer wasted no time in posing with the dressed-up Range Rover Evoque. Beckham’s July 2 appointment made at the same time as the debut of the Evoque had raised eyebrows at the time. The news soon spread across that she had signed on as creative design executive for Range Rover.

The U.K.’s Guardian on July 9 wrote: “We must confess we’ve been scratching our perfectly groomed heads this week at the news that Victoria Beckham is to team up with Range Rover.” The headline on the story said: “Victoria Beckham Rides to Range Rover’s Rescue.” Beckham attended the rollout of the Evoque, wearing a nude silk crepe dress that she designed and striking some graceful poses next to the vehicle.

“This lady knows a lot about fashion and a lot about trends, a lot about luxury products,” said Gerry McGovern, Land Rover design director, in a statement. Land Rover has confirmed that Victoria Beckham will help design a special edition Range Rover Evoque. That Wow! For now, let’s discuss about the funky camouflage wrapped cars. The colourful wraps include traffic-stopping orange, red and yellow colours with a GPS mapping trail of key global cities.

land-rover_range-rover-evoque-camo_group_

The company says the prototypes are in their “final testing stage…. Ordinary prototypes are disguised for discretion, but these are intended to be seen,” it said. As we’ve mentioned earlier, the Range Rover Evoque will be available in four-wheel and two-wheel drive versions and will make its official debut at the Paris Motor Show at the end of September 2010. The Evoque is being described as a global car and Land Rover says that the new car will be sold in over 160 countries. It will be produced at Halewood, creating up to 1000 new jobs at the Liverpool facility.

Audi ur-quattro and R8 e-tron wins Silvretta Classic and E-Auto Rally

Audi e-tron It was time of double celebration for Audi at the inaugural “Silvretta E-Auto Rally Montafon 2010” and the 13th “Silvretta Classic Montafon”. While the Audi e-tron won at the Silvretta E-Auto Rally, the great precision of ur-quattro brought honour to the car maker with its victory at the Silvretta Classic Rally.

Development Chief Michael Dick and factory Audi racer Lukas Luhr took the Audi e-tron electric sports car across the finishing line across a course of 167.5 kilometers.

A very proud Michael Dick, member of the Board of Management of AUDI AG with responsibility for Technical Development declared, “We are delighted at the Audi e-tron’s victory in the first E-Auto Rally”. “On the Silvretta E-Auto Rally’s challenging route profile, we were able to demonstrate that we are well on the way to bringing electric drive to production maturity with our e-tron technology demonstrator based on the R8.”

In the “Silvretta E-Auto Rally Montafon 2010”, the 313 bhp Audi R8 e-tron technology demonstrator had to display the car’s capabilities over three stages and ten time trials. The two-seater car was competing against 23 other electric cars in a race that stretched for three days, and snagged victory in the overall standings by more than half a second! And if you though that this rally was just about speed, let’s just tell you that it was definitely more than that. The participating vehicles had to achieve specific target times in the time trials.

But the biggest challenge for the team surfaced on the second day of the racing in the famous Silvretta mountain and valley time trials. During the fourth time trial, the Audi R8 e-tron had to drive up the Silvretta High Alpine Road and drive at an altitude difference of 1,000 meters (3,280.84 ft) over the mountain road’s 15 kilometers (9.32 miles). But that wasn’t something that could dampen the enthusiasm of Audi works driver Lucas Luhr, who managed to finish third in the R8 e-tron. On the second day, in fact, the Audi team moved to the second place in the overall standings. And upon reaching the inishing line in Partenen at the end of the third stage, Development Chief Dick was able to celebrate overall victory for Audi.

Another team from Audi celebrated its first ever overall win in the famous Silvretta Classic race. Luciano Viaro, in the Audi ur-quattro from 1988, drove with unmatched precision with his blind co-pilot, Enrico Mussinelli. Enrico read the roadbook in Braille. The Audi Tradition team has joined hands with Luciano Viaro to support the Italian-inspired M.I.T.E. project, whose motive is to make classic car racing equally accessible to the visually impaired people. Viaro will be driving an Audi ur-quattro with blind co-pilots in a total of five events this year.

The All-New BMW X3 Unveiled

BMW X3 Taller, wider and longer; that’s the all-new BMW X3 for you. The new car has grown in dimensions moving away farther from the smaller X1. Have a closer look at the car and you too will discover that the car is all new.

BMW has maintained the design language of two other models from its inventory, the 5 and 7 Series, but the design philosophy of the original X3 has been well kept in mind. While designing the new X3, priority has been given to functionality too making it taller, longer and wider than earlier.

Like the others, BMW hasn’t thought about shedding pounds to look slim and beautiful. The all-new X3 has grown taller by 13 mm, longer by 84 mm and wider by 11 mm. This is no way of comparison, yet, if a Volkswagen Polo could move leaving an ostrich egg unharmed under it (remember the TV commercial?), what can one say about this royal giant? The ground clearance of the BMW X3 too has improved by about 12 mm. The humble BMW, however, does not fly its own kite claiming that its new machine is a notch higher than regular on-roaders. The new X3’s wheelbase too has been amplified by 15 mm, enhancing the car’s luggage space from 70-550 litres.

Coming to the comfy interiors, the new car has more to offer; more space and more features to add to the comfort. It no longer wants to be indebted to the E46 3 Series’ dash. The new-generation car flaunts a new-generation console that also incorporates an 8.8-inch screen linked to i-Drive. Whoa! The interiors are now more swish with increased use of fine grain leather and wood. These changes give a lift of sophistication to the interiors wiping off the older model’s old-fashioned boring insides.

The all-new X3 will draw its power from a pair of engines. The fuel efficiency figures are believed to be enhanced. Those who get to enjoy the luxury of the entry-level X3 also get to enjoy the power of 200 horses spewing out of the powerful 2-litre common rail diesel motor. A 3.0-litre turbocharged inline-six petrol with 302 bhp on tap will be the basis of the petrol variant that will be currently available in Europe, but more engines are believed to be offered next year. These include the xDrive28i which has a 3.0-litre naturally aspirated petrol inline six with 240 bhp and the xDrive23i with 202 bhp available from its twin turbo longitudinal-four diesel.

If you’re too excited to have a glimpse of the opulent machine or would love to enjoy a ride in one, you may expect the car to come to India some time early next year with a 5-10 per cent price increase. The 3.0-litre petrol and 2.0-litre diesel variants may be the first ones to appear. The BMW X3 is built in Spartanburg, USA along with the X5 and X6 SAV models.

The $630,000 Porsche 918 Hybrid

Porsche-Spyder-918-Hybrid-1 The Porsche 918 hybrid is a striking machine that promises superlative performance, but we now know that it comes with a price to match. A whopping $630,000! Back in March, Wolfgang Dürheimer, board member in charge of R&D had said that it was too early to talk about pricing, production volumes, and timing. Now, it looks like some progress has happened.

Automotive News Europe caught hold of two people who claim they have direct knowledge of the plan. They have said that, if this hybrid car goes into production, it’s gonna cost a mighty €500,000. That seems to be even higher than the most expensive Porsche till date, the Carrera GT. However, we suggest you to not come to any abrupt conclusions. The Porsche 918 hybrid is not only pricier than the Carrera GT it can also lap the Nürburgring faster than that car.

The new supercar that we first saw at the Geneva Motor Show was sure a supercool concept. In April, Wolfgang Dürheimer seemed to be, once again, gauging the audience response. He had said that that the company would make a decision on producing the car if 1,000 potential customers showed an interest in the car. How many do you think responded? The two unnamed sources say, over 2,000 people have made non-binding expressions of interest in the Porsche 918. Do you believe that?

The car promises outstanding performance; fuel economy and emission figures are just amazing. In addition to the normally aspirated, high-revving, 3.4-liter V-8 that offers over 495 bhp, the simply superb 918 Spyder has three electric motors onboard that add another 215 bhp to the tally. The claimed fuel consumption figures are 33 kmpl and CO2 emissions are going to be as low as 70 grams per kilometre.

The drivetrain can be run in one of four modes. “Eco” relies entirely on electricity and the lithium-ion battery supports a 16-km run. “Hybrid” uses gasoline and electric power in different combinations as conditions permit. In the “Sport” mode, there’s serious driving with most of the power going to the rear wheels. “Race” throws all efficiency to the wind for supreme performance, with the electric motors providing a push-to-pass feature similar to the kinetic energy recovery systems we see in Formula 1.

Porsche-Spyder-918-Hybrid-3

Porsche claims that the 918 will accelerate from a standstill to 100 kmph in less than 3.2 seconds and will hit a max speed of 319 kmph. However there seems to be no official word from Porsche about the 918’s production and what it will cost if it goes into production. Frank Biller, an analyst at Landesbank Baden-Wuerttemberg in Stuttgart, where Porsche is based, said, the 918 Spyder could bolster Porsche’s eco-cred and lure customers to a brand that builds “Europe’s worst gas guzzlers.” Porsche is owned by Volkswagen, which also owns Lamborghini and Bentley, two other brands not exactly known for fuel economy and low emissions.
