Engine for Renault-Nissan-Bajaj Ultra Low Cost Car ready

We have been hearing so much about the ultra low cost car coming from the partnership of Renault-Nissan-Bajaj. The latest to add to that list is a development regarding the engine of the car. Bajaj Auto Managing Director Rajiv Bajaj has said that the company has, in alliance with Renault-Nissan, developed India’s most fuel efficient and least-polluting car engine. Promising, isn’t it!

The engine has been especially developed for the small car that the three biggies are planning to launch together in India in 2012. Bajaj also revealed that the car will be priced below Rs 2 lakh. Guess Nano will be getting some tiny little competition in a segment (and that being the low-cost car segment) that was primarily ruled by it.

So far, Nano gives the top mileage in the petrol car category, but wonder if it will be able to boast of it for long, because Bajaj says that their car would give a mileage of 30 kilometres to a litre of fuel. The car emits less than 100 grams of carbon dioxide (CO2) after a kilometre-long drive. Nano’s emission rate stands at 101 grams to a kilometre.

“The price of the car will be below Rs 2 lakh. We were very clear from the beginning, that we are not making the cheapest car in the country or a Rs 1-lakh car. We also do not want to cut back on features of the car. But, of course, we are leveraging the lower costs structure that we enjoy for making two-wheelers,” Bajaj said.

The Indian auto industry is expecting a rise in Nano prices and with low cost car coming from Bajaj-Renault-Nissan, the journey for Nano is going to be anything but pleasant.

Elaborating on the strategy behind the proposed car, Bajaj said: “When we were working on the car, our main aim was to provide a product which will have low cost of running and maintenance, so that two-wheeler owners can upgrade. We have now been able to achieve development of an engine which will give us 30 kilometres to a litre, and together with the low CO2 emission, it would be a powerful city car for consumers.” Bajaj said the car would be on the roads in another two to two-and-a-half years.

And here is something that we think most Indian junta would appreciate. Bajaj said that the aim behind the proposed car was to come with something that would require less than Rs 5000 a month for maintenance.

Bajaj said that the low cost car project got delayed by an year or so because they wanted to build a car that would give the best fuel efficiency.

“If we wanted to make just any car, we could have bought a company which makes them. But we wanted to do it differently.”

Hmmm, we like the sound of it. But let’s see if these promises remain there when the car actually reaches the roads. But for the time being, Nano’s monopoly in the low cost car segment looks in grave danger.

  1. Hmm, good to hear the details. Finally Tata Nano will get a reality bite because so far it had only one advantage- that it was the cheapest. Could not score anything on other aspects
