The All-New _Blue-Eyed Boy" WagonR Launched

Today seems to be an auspicious day for Maruti Suzuki. The car maker has just unveiled the all-new WagonR, ‘The Blue-Eyed Boy’ in India. The car had already arrived in dealerships across India and finally we have news of the vehicle’s launch. The new WagonR has undergone design changes on its exteriors. The facelift has given the WagonR a new headlamp cluster, a new smiling grille and fresh front bumpers. On the inside, the macho version of the car sports an all-new dashboard design and enhanced plastic quality.

Maruti has invested Rs 290 Crore on the enhancement of the WagonR. The new model has made its entry with a 1.0-litre K-Series engine that can churn out 60 bhp of power. The new 998cc three-cylinder K10B engine is mated to a 5-speed manual transmission. The performance is amazing with a mileage of 18 kmpl. The new WagonR will have Bharat Stage IV emission norms and will be produced from the company’s Gurgaon facility. The engine is packed with 67 bhp and a maximum torque of 90 Nm. The cable type transmission and new frame type suspension offer great stability on all terrains. The NVH levels are also enhanced. Maruti has reworked the front suspension to ensure the car handling gets better.

WagonR has forever been one of the highest-selling models for Maruti Suzuki. In March 2010 the sales numbers for the existing Wagon R were a few units above 11,000. Since its launch the WagonR has found 8.8 lakh homes in India and 55,00,000 worldwide. The WagonR was first introduced in India in 2001 and took some time to find favour among buyers due to its non-conventional design for that time. At that time, the car was powered by a 1061cc engine producing 64bhp. In 2006 Maruti gave the car a facelift including a new nose job.

Are you wondering about the new WagonR’s price? Maruti has done a good job by pricing the new WagonR at Rs 3.28 Lakh for the LX variant. The LXi variant would cost Rs 3.57 lakhs; VXi would cost Rs 3.81 lakhs and the VXi version with ABS plus Airbags would cost Rs 4.12 lakhs. The design, as we can all see, is bold and aggressive. The new version is more muscular compared to its predecessor. The V-character line accentuates the WagonR’s character. The bigger and sweeping headlamps with the blue tint look like a pair of sparkling eyes. The wider bumpers stretching to the corners only add to the athletic appearance of the car.
Interiors of new Wagon R
The new WagonR, with a more modern and curvier look, has a sloping roof and blazing fenders. The bigger and wider wheels and upright rear character makes sure the macho one gets a second look. The large doors help you enter and leave the car with ease. Then, there is the chrome accentuation in front and the back with the WagonR brand engraved in chrome in the rear. The new car sure has improved rear visibility.

Coming to the dual-tone interiors of the new car, it has 3-D fabric seats with 60:40 split rear seats. You can find silver accentuation all around. The new tilt steering wheel, ergonomic gear knob and the new speedometer design take care of the driver’s comfort. The new WagonR comes with an integrated audio with AUX-in and 6-band graphic equalizer for ultimate entertainment on the drive. The full-trim interiors including A, B and C pillar trims create an excellent ambience.

All in all, this WagonR is a spacious package. It has the best-in-class wheel base of 2400mm which is over 40 mm more than the original WagonR. The legroom too is best in the segment with distance of 100 mm more than its predecessor. The 240mm front seats welcome even tall users to have a seat. The headroom is great.

Let’s go to the utilitarian add-ons in the new WagonR. It has push-type cup holders with a utility hook and a sturdy, deeper glove box with an integrated shelf, a rear parcel tray and an integrated tool box. The utility basket under the co-driver’s seat sends a message loud and clear ‘while I am here, do not throw waste out of the car’. Environment care must say. There is a front door map pocket and soft inserts on the floor console to safeguard the cell-phone camera unit.

The mirror, an electrical outside rear view mirror (ORVM) offers great visibility. Power windows, keyless entry, foldable assist-grips and the new HVAC unit providing a temperature reduction of four degrees than the existing model; the WagonR comes loaded with all these features. Safety features are crowded in the all-new WagonR. In the high-end variant, ABS & dual airbags, rear defogger, wiper & washer, driver seat belt indicator and the i-CATS security system take care of driver and passenger safety.
New WagonR
The cosmetic surgery that the car has received, takes the earlier design one level higher into the upmarket urban car territory. We’ll have to wait and watch if it is able to beat more established contenders like the Chevrolet Beat and the Hyundai i10.

John Cooper Works (JCW) World Championship 50 Edition Reaches the US

JCW Mini 50th EditionHere is the big news from the British car maker MINI. MINI has confirmed its plans to offer the John Cooper Works (JCW) World Championship 50 Edition in the United States.

MINI dealers in US had been experiencing a good demand for the John Cooper Works World Championship 50 special edition and they expressed their interest in bringing the car to the US shores. And finally MINI decided to give in to the demands of the MINI US dealers by exporting 50 units of the hand-built luxury car. The deliveries would begin late spring / early summer.

The public got a glimpse of the special edition model during the 2009 MINI United Festival in Silverstone, England. The global production run for the car has been confirmed for just 250 vehicles.

The limited edition car has been inspired and influenced by John Cooper’s son, Mike Cooper and it is a tribute to the 50th year anniversary of Mini’s and John Cooper’s first F1 championship victory.

1959 was a glorious year for both MINI and John Cooper. That was the year when Alec Issigonis presented his concept for an all-new small car featuring a transverse-mounted front four-cylinder engine. The concept had space for four occupants and luggage. In the same year, John Cooper got his first Formula One World Championship title with Jack Brabham at the wheel.

The JCW World Championship 50 edition is based on MINI John Cooper Works Hardtop and sports some attractive peculiarities. The car’s Connaught Green colour would remind you of the 1950’s and 60’s era when the British race cars used to be the same colour. The bonnet and the roof get stripes in Pepper White. Then, the car gets the the John Cooper Works Aero Kit, gloss black versions of the 17″ Challenge spoke wheels, custom numbered side scuttles, a unique Championship Red Lounge Leather interior and carbon fiber accents throughout.

Even the floormats have been stitched in red so as to match the red stitching found on the shifter and parking brake boots. The instrument panel trim get adorned with a panel that has John Cooper Works’ signature

Like the standard JCW Hardtop, the Limited Edition gets a turbocharged 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine which can generate a maximum of 208 bhp and 192 lb-ft (260 Nm) of torque.

Considering that you can get more powerful car for the same price, the car may seem to be a little expensive at $40,300 (including the destination and Handling costs). But then this is a limited edition production and you cannot compare it with others.

Tata aims to become the second largest automaker in India

Tata MotorsTata Motors’ Sanand plant is all ready and will start producing the Nano by April 30. With this starts another thing which we would like to refer as a new rivalry between Tata Motors and Hyundai Motor Co.

The Sanand plant will manufacture up to 250,000 units of Nano per year, which is about 80 percent of Hyundai’s India sales last fiscal year. Hyundai holds the second spot on India’s largest automaker list.

Tata is trying to fill-up 100,000 advance orders for the Nano. Those sales added to the new output may assist the Indian carmaker to regain the second place, after being stuck on the third place for three consecutive years. The Nano project would prove to be profitable only if the volumes are significant.

Meanwhile, Tata Motors also has to find out the causes of the recent Nano fire accidents and clear the confusion and doubt that it has created among the Indian masses. And as the “small wonder” from Tata, of late, is getting a lot of global attention, it becomes imperative that they launch a massive damage control campaign.

Tata Motors sold 30,350 units of Nanos from July through March. And according to a survey done by CSM Worldwide Inc, Indians may buy as many as 1 million low-cost cars a year by 2016. Tata Motors would definitely want to help fill the rising demand for small cars.

Hyundai, South Korea’s biggest carmaker can produce up to 600,000 vehicles a year at its Chennai factory. “We have no intention of getting into the Nano segment at all,” said Arvind Saxena, a director of Hyundai’s India unit.

In the initial sales period in April, Tata received a whopping 206,703 Nano orders and the first 100,000 customers for the 624-cc model were chosen by lottery. The entry level Nano costs about 123,360 rupees ($2,800) in New Delhi.

Tata started selling cars in 1999 and boosted vehicle sales by 26 percent to 201,399 units in the fiscal year ended in March, and got 13 percent of Asia’s third-largest passenger- car market. According to the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) Suzuki leads the show with 50 percent and Hyundai controls 21 percent of the Asian passenger- car market.

Tata, which started selling cars in 1999, boosted vehicle sales 26 percent to 201,399 units in the fiscal year ended in March, giving it 13 percent of Asia’s third-largest passenger- car market. Suzuki led with 50 percent, and Hyundai controlled 21 percent, according to the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers.

Demand for new cars in India has increased at its fastest in six years during the last fiscal year. Global automakers like Ford and Volkswagen are targeting the Indian drivers as the disposable income rises to new height and India becomes the second largest car market.

A Sneak Preview of the Year 2020 – Electric Cars Everywhere

A Virtual Sketch of an Electric CarStarting with the Geneva auto show where majority of car makers flaunted their electric cars, or even before that, everybody is talking about green cars. We now hear from a media report that high-tech electric cars will soon be a trend worldwide. By 2020 global sales of electric vehicles are believed to amount to around 470 billion euro or $635 billion or Rs 28,000 billion. Yes, this is the estimated figure.

However, as usual, there is much more debate on the proper universal charging systems. These can be made only when policy makers, manufacturers, researchers and consumers make determined efforts through dialogue. Something needs to be thought over and discussed and then put into action to see electric cars turning into reality worldwide.

Germany’s Economics Minister Rainer Bruederle had something to say at the Hanover Fair. The Hanover Fair is the world’s largest industrial trade fair for energy and power plant solutions. According to Rainer Bruederle, the German government has planned a fund of 500 million euro or $675 million for research and development of electric cars and charging systems. That seems to be a great and practical initiative and Germany expects to see around one million electric cars on its roads by 2020.

The German minister added that Germany is looking at re-inventing the automobile. The country would not just change the appearance of the automobile, but also its driving mode and power-charging system. The Hanover Fair lured around 100 exhibitors who marked the event with their novelty on electric charging systems, mobile energy storage and alternative mobility technologies.

During the fair, the spotlight sure was on the emission-free bus without a combustion motor. The propulsion system in the bus is combined by fuel cells, batteries and ultra-capacitors. A great idea, isn’t it? The driving power of the bus was derived from a hydrogen-powered fuel cell which could be recharged during driving. The energy generated through driving can be transformed and stored within the battery. The bus can move at a top speed of 65 kmph for a distance of 250 km with a completely filled tank of hydrogen gas.

Electric mobility is very important to Germany’s sustainable development and renewable energy industry. However, there are so many challenges for the manufacturers. They would have to invest lots and also develop the recharging standard. Long way to go! Germany’s dream will hopefully be fulfilled in the next ten years.

It has been estimated that a high-capacity rechargeable battery will cost somewhere around 15,000 euro or $20,250. Any idea what this figure is going to cost? It amounts to two-thirds of the cost of the car. We sure know by now that the amount will prove to be unaffordable to car buyers.

The European Union (EU) will put forward its standard for electric cars, hoping to coordinate with other countries on this significant issue in order to make sure that electric cars can be recharged everywhere in the future. More than 4,800 exhibitors from 64 countries presented revolutionary, cutting-edge technologies on renewable energy, industrial automation and alternative mobility solutions at the fair.

Mahindra to give away 100 Pik-Up utility vehicle

Mahindra Scorpio Pick-Up in AustraliaLady luck finally seems to be standing next to our very own Mahindra Automotive. M&M recently bought the 49 per cent stake, owned by Renault in the MRPL joint venture, and became the sole proprietor of the JV.

Recently M&M added another feather in its cap when “OK is no longer OK” campaign from Mahindra Navistar won the ‘Best Print Campaign in the Country’ from the Public Relations Council of India (PRCI).

And now, Mahindra is all set to launch the biggest of its kind advertising campaign in Australia. M&M made its quite entry to the Australian shores during the last month of 2008.

The campaign, which will be run across all media including television, online, print and social media, has been developed by the company’s full-service local agency Synchromesh. The campaign will be launched tomorrow, 23rd April 2010. Not only that Mahindra Automotive has come up with a tried-and-tested, though massive, method of promotional campaign.

Mahindra Automotive will be handing over not just ten or twenty, but one hundred units of Mahindra Pik-Up utility vehicle to the winners of its ‘Rate & Win’ competition.

“When discussing ute options with their local dealer we wanted to give consumers a chance to understand and experience the Pik-Up’s features and benefits in a fun and interactive way, said Mahindra Automotive chief executive Claire Tynan.

“If they rate the 10 selected features in the same order as our motoring experts, they could drive away with a brand new car for free.”

“Our dealers love the promotion, and consumers would be mad not to experience the Pik-Up first hand and add it to their shopping list!”

This campaign has some very important attractions. The number of free pik-ups to be given is huge and will definitely generate a lot of public awareness about the product.

This is the biggest ad campaign investment from Mahindra since it started its operations in Australia with a small regional television campaign.

Here is a quick run-through the features of the Mahindra Pik-up. The pik-up, which can load over 1 tonne payload, has 210mm of ground clearance, power steering and power windows. Entertainment on the ride will be taken care of by 2-Din audio stereo system with USB, MP3 and CD player with tuner. Safety features include dual front airbags, ABS and Follow-me-home headlights.

Mahindra Automotive Australia is a venture between Indian auto manufacturer Mahindra & Mahindra and Australian distributor TMI Pacific. The JV has a total of 25 dealers in rural and metropolitan locations and is quickly expanding into the South Australian market too.

Tata Aria to be launched with Rs 12-14 Lakh price tag

Tata AriaThe new MPV from Tata Motors is geared up to make its first appearance. The concept car was exhibited at the 2006 Geneva Motor Show and ever since that day, it has a fan following eagerly waiting to have a glance of the vehicle or bring it home. At the New Delhi Auto Expo 2010, the Aria was the showstopper. The 2008 Auto Expo had created magic for the Tatas. The Tata Nano was revealed at the 2008 show and we know of the buzz it had created. Now, Tata Motors is expecting the same results from the Aria. Let’s see how far the Aria goes.

Maruti Suzuki used the 2010 Auto Expo for replacing its Versa with the Eeco. The Maruti Eeco comes loaded with plenty of features and has the five and seven seat options. The Tata Aria is another vehicle that has been designed to comfortably accommodate seven passengers in three rows. The car perches with ease on a special ladder-frame chassis. The Aria’s chassis has been created by an exclusive process called hydro-forming.

The Tata Aria is equipped with a 5-speed manual transmission. The engine of this amazing MPV comes powered by a 2.2 L Direct Injection Common Rail (DiCOR) diesel engine that can produce 140 bhp of power and a maximum torque of 320 Nm. The Tata Aria is capable of zooming to top speeds of up to 152 kmph. Isn’t that mind blowing?

Are you wondering about the power-packed car’s price? Well, this vehicle surely has a class of its own and the market price may range somewhere around Rs 12 lakh to Rs 14 lakh. Tata must be thinking hard about the price. The Aria’s nearest competitor is the Toyota Innova which is priced quite a bit lower than the Tata Aria.

The Aria will soon be here and will come on to the roads as three variants, with both full-time four-wheel drives or all-wheel drive (AWD) and a two-wheel drive. Which variant would you like to see first? We hope your wish is granted. As of now, the company is still undecided on which variant should first see the Indian market. With the Aria being the first of its kind from the Tata stables, the company plans to burst into the segment and gain the first-mover advantage. Will it succeed? There’s just one answer. Wait and watch.

We have already mentioned that the Tata Aria is an all-new class of vehicle from Tata Motors.

The car maker has made it clear that this MPV would be sold in international markets too. Two other vehicles too which were new to their respective segments were revealed by the Tatas at the New Delhi Auto Expo. Tata Motors looks at targeting B and C segment towns with the Venture, a small MPV that runs on diesel. The Magic Iris is the second vehicle. The Magic Iris is believed to be a modified version of the Ace Magic with four doors and a rear-mounted engine. Built with unique features like Velcro-fastened windows, the Tata Magic Iris will also be targeting the small towns in India.

1 Lakh Sparkling Sparks make GM India Proud

Chevrolet SparkThe year has been great for the Indian automotive industry. Most car makers saw record sales figures and now we have General Motors India rolling out the 100,000th Chevrolet Spark from its plant at a simple ceremony. While the Ford Figo is driving sales for Ford Motors, Chevrolet Spark has been doing exceedingly well for GM in the Indian market.

Day after day and month after month the Chevy Spark has been pleasing its creator with impressive growth in sales. In the mini car segment, the Spark has been sparkling and has emerged as the most sought after minicar in its segment when it comes to styling, performance, fuel economy, value for money proposition and other product attributes. The Spark is a leader when it comes to internal space utilization.

The Chevrolet Spark is a hit globally, and it is one of GM India’s best-selling cars in India. The sales figures stand as enough proof supporting the fact that the Spark is a great car when it comes to quality, economy and performance. General Motors is also confident that the award winning Spark makes for a natural choice for the customers, given its product attributes and the value proposition it offers at such a low price. General Motors has been constant working hard to offer its consumers the best-in-class products and services. The roll-out of the 100,000th Spark from the plant only adds a feather in the cap.

The Chevrolet Spark is equipped with a 1-litre, 995cc, S-Tec petrol engine which very generously gives out 63 bhp. The engine is mated to a five-speed manual gearbox. The S-Tec engine, that stands for Smart-Tec engine, is made even better with technological novelty like Sequential MPFI (Multi Point Fuel Injection), Dual Distributor Less Ignition (DDLI) System, Motorized Throttle Intake System (MTIS) and Advanced Optical Sensors. This is why the engine is a high performer.

The smooth and noise-free driving with high fuel efficiency only enhances the joyous riding experience. The 995cc petrol engine of the Chevrolet Spark offers a mileage of around 13 kmpl in the city, while on highway, it gives 16.9kmpl. The acceleration is breath-taking to such an extent that even if one drives the Spark at 100 kmpl, it is not going to vibrate. The drive is going to be as smooth as ever.

The Chevrolet Spark is being produced at GM India’s Halol and Talegaon plants and these plants boast of a combined production capacity of 225,000 units. The car maker has been doing all it can to boost sales. It has recently started second shifts at both these plants to meet the increased demand for its inventory of products.

Another facility, General Motors India’s engine plant with a capacity of 160,000-units a year is also fast coming up at the Talegaon manufacturing plant premises. This will be the car maker’s first flexi-engine plant in the GM world where we can find both petrol and diesel small car engines being manufactured together. The engines are believed to roll out of the plant by the end of 2010.

General Motors India is now like a busy bumble bee. It has also collaborated with the Reva Electric Car Company to produce the electric Spark. So we now know that GM is just taking another step towards going green. This path-breaking initiative emphasizes GM India’s commitment to introduce eco-friendly mobility solutions in our country. Reva would provide battery technology for the E-Spark. The e-Spark will be India’s first 4-door passenger electric vehicle and will be launched by the end of 2010.

Tata Magic Iris launched in Jaipur

Tata Magic Iris ad as appeared in Dainik Bhaskar News DailyWell, Tata Motors has launched the Magic Iris in Jaipur and the vehicle would grace the other cities in the following months.

Tata Motors has launched the BS III edition of the Magic Iris, which implies it can only be registered in smaller cities only. Since Chennai, Bangalore, Delhi and others register only BS IV emission compliant vehicles, they would have to wait for the day Tata launches the BS IV version. So far, so good.

In Jaipur, you can buy this car by shelling out Rs.2.12 lakh and, mind it; the price is inclusive of registration fees and taxes. Bookings for the new car have started and the delivery may take a minimum of two days, given the other formalities like insurance are completed then-and-there. The image that you see in the blog is actually a news paper ad which appeared in Dainik Bhaskar.

The Tata Magic Iris features a 611-cc water-cooled diesel engine that is capable of producing 11 bhp and can do a top speed of 55 km/h. Alright guys, don’t roll your eyes over this already. The Magic Iris is aimed at competing with the auto rickshaws in India and we can claim that Magic Iris is much faster than most of the other trikes.

The Magic Iris comes as a four-wheel replacement to India’s three-wheel rickshaws. And it comes with plenty of features that would give it an edge over the Bajaj Autos that we so often come across on the Indian roads. For one, the Magic Iris has got a large passenger compartment, which can conveniently accommodate three adults. Apart from this there is a single passenger seat up front and a boot that can swallow quite an amount of luggage.

The safety aspects of the passengers have been well thought and executed in this vehicle. It has an all-weather protection and there is no door on the right hand side leading into the passenger area. Also, the magic offers a stable and less noisy ride

We have a lot of people complaining about the look of the car. But, you can’t expect a passenger car to look like a Jaguar (or even a Nano), right, even though both come from the same manufacturer. Alright, we agree that it does not look like an eye-candy sort but when you consider the usability and safety factor of this car (or whatever you want to call it); it is sure to strike a chord with the Indian crowd.

A Revamped Maruti Suzuki Alto at Rs 2 Lakh?

New Maruti Alto Cars in IndiaMaruti Alto is currently the largest selling car in India and its creator, Maruti Suzuki has plans to strip down the car’s cost. Do you believe this? Around 20,000 Altos are sold every month by this car major. This sales figure makes it very clear that a car like Alto is what Indians would like to bring in to their car porch. The buying preference of Indian customers is very clear and the news of one of the cheapest hatchback cars going to be revamped brings even more delight on everybody’s face.

The revamping of the Maruti Alto has been done with two objectives in mind. Our dear old Maruti 800 just made its way out of 13 cities and the new Alto is believed to be replacing the iconic car. Maruti 800, Maruti Suzuki’s flagship model and the most selling car in India just got phased out because of the BS IV norms. Secondly, the Alto would come in to beat the rising competition in the Indian automobile market. How successful is it going to be? We see most of the car manufacturers already on a launch spree and Maruti wants to hold the top position in the small car segment.

The all-new Alto is believed to carry an attractive price tag of Rs. 2 lakh. Wondering about the engine configuration? The revamped hatchback would be packed with a powerful 1-litre K-Series engine. Maruti Suzuki has always catered to the needs of Indian customers. It has always designed its cars keeping the Indian crowd in mind. The same idea echoes very well in their latest thoughtful move.

RC Bhargava, Maruti Suzuki chairman said that it is their constant concern and effort to lower down the prices of their automobiles. The new Maruti Alto may not be as cheap as the M800, but the car maker is certainly trying to bring the price close to the range of the Maruti 800. Must say, this indeed is a very thoughtful move by Maruti Suzuki.

It looks like, apart from the power-packed new engine, the decrease in the car’s price is the next major change. There are not going to be any major changes in the looks of the car. The company wants to retain the appearance of its largest selling car. What if a majority of buyers who have bought the car had actually for its looks? The top officials were heard saying that they would like to hang on to the design of their much successful model.

As we all know by now, Maruti has also given another popular hatchback, the Maruti WagonR a facelift and has invested Rs. 290 crore in the same. This model will be launched in no time.

With all these cosmetic surgeries and novelty in design in its cars, Maruti Suzuki is undoubtedly aiming to capture and hold its position in the Indian automobile market. We Indians, of course, continue to remain a hatchback loving nation.
