A Car Especially Made for You

Most of the time, the whole excitement of driving a new car is lost as the design traits of the car make you feel you are a ‘misfit’ for you new car. But this feeling is now going to be in history books soon because your dream machine will now be designed for you only!

You will soon be entitled to have legroom and the headroom as well as seat specifications as per your needs. Bearing this in mind, Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI) has started a study to come up with India-specific anthropometric data (information resulting from scientific study of measurements of the human body) for the country’s driving population. The project started in May 2009 and will be completed by September 2010.

According to ARAI, the present settings in the automobiles are not suitable for Indians even as leg space, headroom, view of bonnet from seat doesn’t match Indian sizes.

The end result of this data will determine dimensions for height of the seat, legroom, headroom, foot room and pedal size, and can be pivotal in reducing fatigue and enhancing efficiency. Interestingly, such a data was never made available for India before.

The manufacturers in India presently do not have a set standard and hence these specifications are done on judgement or on customer feedback.

This is one of the fundamental data generation works taken up by Passive Safety Lab (PSL) of ARAI and is funded by the Ministry of Heavy Industries. Under this project, 5,000 Indian car buyers in the age group of 18 and 60 years are taken whose physical attributes will be measured and dimensions drawn. The anthropometric data includes height, weight and key physical specifications of users, which are further analysed to develop a standard.

In fact, ARAI has already taken 600 measurements from western India and have installed a scanning machine in Gurgaon for gathering measurements from northern region. The measurements will be taken from five zones in the country including north, south, west, east and central zones. Once the data is collected, a statistical analysis will be done with the help of the statistics department of the University of Pune.

Such data will facilitate car manufacturing companies to further optimise their designs to suit local anthropometry, making driving more comfortable for the local population. The data will help various government bodies involved in formulating regulations to base their standards from practical data. Besides benefiting the Indian automobile industry, the measurements will come in hand in numerous other applications namely, apparel industry, textiles, shoe makers, helmet manufacturers among others.

Air Bags in Rear Seat Belts

Ford Motor Company is planning to offer a new kind of rear seat belts. These new rear seat belts do the work of seats belts as well as of airbags. Ford Motors said that it will start making use of these seat belts on the redesigned 2011 Explorer SUV.

These new seat belts contain an inflatable bag inside the shoulder strap and a small cylinder of cold compressed gas beneath the seat that is dispensed through the buckle when a crash is detected. The belts inflate less explosively than a traditional air bag and are designed to spread the force of a crash over an area of the body five times as large as regular seat belts do.

Ford is the first automaker to offer these inflatable rear seat belts, a technology aimed at reducing injuries to children and elderly passengers in a crash. Ford is trying to use this technology as a way to attract new customers, particularly at a time when many vehicles come with six or more air bags and myriad other safety features.

Ford feels that children and older people commonly sit in the back seat and are more susceptible to being injured in a crash, particularly in the head, chest or neck, than other occupants of a vehicle. Ford also offers radar-enabled adaptive cruise control and amenities called MyKey, which allows parents to impose certain limitations on teenage drivers, and Sync, a system that permits hands-free interaction with mobile phones and the car’s audio system.

Ford first demonstrated the concept of inflatable belts in 2001. Another automaker, Toyota, is planning to offer a similar feature next year in the Lexus LFA.

Toyota In Delhi Auto Show

All of you would be waiting impatiently for the Delhi Auto Expo. And being a major auto event that will be hosted by India very shortly, we are all excited about the auto show. Now, we here are Carazoo.com had already covered the exciting news about how more and more manufacturers are flooding towards the Auto Expo. And the most interesting fact is that the auto makers find the Delhi Auto Expo the most significance and popular one. And that could be the one reason why the auto makers, at least a few of them, declined to continue in the Tokyo Motor show and was keen to join in the Delhi Auto Expo.

Toyota is expected to be showcasing two of its much awaited models, Toyota Avanza and Toyota Prius, Interesting, uh? And we still can’t confirm whether these are the only two models the car manufacturer will be showcasing or will there be new cars announced to be showcased at the Auto Show by the manufacturer, you never know.

Avanza is an MPV from the Toyota stable. It is a five seater and once launched in India, the Japanese auto maker expects it be a bigger hit than its most-popular model Toyota Innova. One reason behind this expectation could be its low price, it is priced lesser than Innova.

The Avanza will be equipped with a 1.5-litre petrol engine. Wait, the Show is promising a real car raining season in India.

Hyundai to Hire International Talents

All you hunting for jobs and would love to be a part of auto market, here is a golden opportunity. The second largest car maker of the country, Hyundai, is search for talents. The job opening looks very attractive, but wait a minute before you be rejoiced. The company is looking talents not in India, but abroad. Yes, Hyundai Motor India is looking overseas for talent at the levels of general managers and group heads for its product design and marketing divisions, a senior official has said.

The company is looking for resources with different skill sets and with diverse experience. And anyone with the desired skill set can apply for the job, no matter, which part of the world you belong to. The company is not bothered about the nationality of its employees. But Hyundai gives importance for their skill sets.

Currently, the company mainly employs Indians and Koreans. But now on, it needs international talents, for product management and development. The company is looking for candidates with vibrant marketing skills. He should be capable enough to do business analyses and give suggestions for new product lines or changes in an existing line-up.

The company at the moment does not seem to be interested in transferring people from other locations to India so as to meet local requirements. Well, I think, as more and more Indians prefer to fly to other counties for job openings, there isn’t anyone left to meet the domestic requirements!

Nissan Targeting Nano Customers

While we were writing about the Nissan small car that the company was planning to launch in India, Thailand, and China, little did we know that Nissan was in fact targeting the Nano. Nissan wants to break the vivid market, which the Tata Nano has managed to build. We would not be surprised, this could be the dream of any car maker, such is the acceptance of Nano not only in India but throughout the world. Nano has been stealing the limelight for long now and Nissan wants to substitute itself with the little wonder, Nano. The new small car from Nissan will be launched in March 2010. But it is expected that, for the car to come to India, it will take another two months since its launch in March. The new small car from Nissan is named V, where V stands for Versatility. And Nissan is expected to sell one million Vs by 2013. There are other car makers whom we thought would launch cars so that they can compete with the customers’ favorite Nano. But breaking our expectations, Fiat recently denied any plans of the company to launch ultra-cheap cars. Now we will all set out hopes on Nissan. Thinking deep about what in Nano lures the customers, anyone would say, the price. And so Nissan also focuses on the pricing, which the company believes will win over the customers.

Diesel Cars on the Way

A slew of cars with diesel engine are on the way to enter the Indian car market. Car makers such as Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Hyundai and Maruti Suzuki are planning to introduce diesel engine cars to the domestic market.

There has been a change in the outlook of Indian car buyers. The new generation of car buyers do not think of the high maintenance cost and premium pricing while considering to opt for a diesel engine car. In fact, these are the problems of yesterdays and today with technology getting superior, fuel efficient and more environment-friendly, the new generation of car buyers pick up diesel cars with no headache.

Mercedes-Benz is planning to bring in the new E-Class in diesel, while its arch-rival BMW is all set to roll out diesel models in the upcoming Delhi Auto Expo and Hyundai gearing up to launch a diesel Sonata. Then, we have India’s number one car maker Maruti Suzuki planning to launch diesel variant of the SX4. As a matter of fact, luxury car makers like BMW, Mercedes and Audi sell more diesel variants than their petrol counterparts. The Honda CR-V was ruling the SUV segment till the Toyota Fortuner was launch. The CR-V has a petrol engine while the Fortuner comes with a diesel engine.

Toyota sells more than 99 per cent of diesel variants of its cars. Toyota feels that premium car buyers need higher torque and power and that can be developed much better through advanced diesel technology.

Maruti Suzuki Swift and the DZire are selling 65 per cent diesel variants and others like Tata Motors, Mahindra & Mahindra, General Motors, Hyundai and Ford are stepping up production of the diesel models. Tata Motors’ Indica and Indigo, Mahindra’s Logan, General Motors Optra, Cruze and Hyundai’s Verna are seeing an increase in diesel model sales in the recent months.

Car makers have begun scaling up the production of diesel variants in recent months. The reason behind is a much advanced diesel technology which is forcing car manufacturers to start looking at alternative solutions. Moreover, premium car buyers travel long distances, so fuel economy plays an important role. With diesel cost being lower than petrol, the payback is quicker.
