Mercedes Buys 75 Percent of Brawn GP

Mercedes-Benz LogoMercedes-Benz certainly seems to know how to bet on the winning horse. Mercedes have bought a 75.1 percent share in Brawn GP while it sold their 40 percent holdings in McLaren, Brawn’s Web site announced on Monday. The current Brawn shareholders retain a 24.9 percent stake in the team.

The move means that Brawn will be branded as Mercedes Grand Prix for 2010, whilst the company will still supply engines to McLaren and Force India.

Nico Rosberg is expected to be confirmed as a Mercedes driver soon, but there is now much wider discussion on whom world champion Jenson Button will be driving for, with many believing that McLaren is the more favourable option.

With two places available between the teams (Rosberg seems a certainty), the drivers linked with the lucrative seats currently include Kimi Raikkonen, Jenson Button, Nick Heidfeld and Timo Glock. There is also the outside possibility that Heikki Kovalainen will remain at McLaren.

Button’s current issue with Brawn/Mercedes is his salary, as discussions seem to have stagnated. However, some believe that McLaren is the more likely to be competitive in 2010, which could also be a factor in Button’s decision.

Kimi Raikkonen will only be in Formula One if he can secure a drive that gives him a car capable of winning. But in return for his services, he wants an awful lot of money, which has put McLaren off signing him straight away.

Timo Glock and Nick Heidfeld’s nationality could help them in securing a Mercedes drive, although Heidfeld has also been linked to McLaren. Both have seen their former employers leave the sport and are currently without a drive for 2010.

Volvo Pedestrian Safety System

volvo-pedestrian-safety-System
Swedish automobile maker Volvo has come up with a new pedestrian-crash-prevention system. This new pedestrian-crash-prevention system is going to be introduced on the redesigned 2011 Volvo S60.

This pedestrian-crash-prevention system is the latest development in what promises to be a new generation of safety systems that go beyond simply warning drivers of impending disasters – it actually takes control of the car to prevent them.

In 2008, 4,378 pedestrians were killed, and some 69,000 were injured, in traffic accidents in the United States, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. That has provided a strong incentive for researchers to explore ideas like warning systems, external air bags and softer crumple zones that might lessen the consequences of cars striking people.

In the past, the possibility of having a car actually stop itself before hitting a person has been mostly in the realm of science fiction. But with Volvo’s new feature, it is no more a science fiction. The Volvo Pedestrian Safety System identifies pedestrians as well as bikers in front of a vehicle using a video.

The camera sits at the top edge of the windshield, in front of the rearview mirror. It scans up to 160 feet ahead with a 45-degree-wide viewing angle, enabling it to pick out as many as 64 people. Coupled with a radar unit mounted behind the grille that looks ahead as far as 650 feet and software fine-tuned over 330,000 miles of testing, the system assesses the collision probability based on the direction of the car and expected path of the pedestrians.

The software uses sophisticated algorithms to judge whether a person is likely to jump in front of the car, based on the individual’s gait and position. Also, it does not suffer some of the blind spots – like windshield pillars – a driver must contend with.

Furthermore, the reflexes of its computer will best those of an inattentive driver. Indeed, that’s the system’s main function – to avoid pedestrian accidents caused by distractions.

Volvo says the system can prevent a pedestrian collision at speeds of up to 25 km/h. Unlike Volvo’s complementary City Safety system, intended to prevent low-speed fender benders, the pedestrian avoidance system works all the time, even at highway speeds.

At the highest speed, the car attempted to stop, delivering a much gentler deceleration. This action is known among researchers as accident mitigation; the car can’t defy physics and go from 115 km/h to zero, but it will slow down to lessen the impact.

Just as lane departure warning and adaptive cruise control systems have become more popular; it is likely that active safety systems similar to Volvo’s pedestrian collision avoidance will become common in the future.

Merc launches "Mbrace" Telematics System

Mercedes-Benz LogoGerman luxury car maker Mercedes-Benz which also is a pioneer in innovations has joined hands with Hughes Telematics, to launch a new feature that will allow owners of its vehicles access to an 18 different services via a nifty telematics system.

The new feature which is called “mbrace”, offers everything from a vehicle locator for crowded car parks, somebody to direct you if you get lost or even the ability to order online, all whilst sitting in the driver’s seat.

This feature “mbrace” is quite similar to Ford’s Sync system and GM’s OnStar which also enables pairing of smart phones like iPhones and BlackBerrys to the car’s electronic interface. Drivers can then use their phones to lock or unlock their cars remotely.

Other services include automatic emergency service notification in case the car is stolen or in an accident, a vehicle health check function that goes live to the nearest dealership, real-time weather and traffic reports, and even a concierge service that gets you 24/7 access to a customer-service rep who will help you make dinner reservations, book a hotel or order a flight.

Indian F1 Track Design Revealed

Indian F1 track

India will finally have its own F1 track, a full-fledged one in that. India is all set to host its first F1 Grand Prix in 2011 and here in CARAZOO. COM, we provide you with the first glimpse of the track where the race will take place.

The circuit in the Jaypee Greens Sports City bears the usual hallmarks of a Hermann Tilke-designed track. But from this first impression it seems to have some of the open, flowing corners that many modern tracks often lack.

It looks like a circuit in two halves, with several slow corners before and after the main start/finish straight. These are surely intended to increase opportunities for overtaking, something F1 car designers have been demanding recently.

But the other half of the track includes several longer-radius corners and some quick-looking bends. It is quite impossible to get any sense of gradient from this flat map, however.

It is an unusually short track which is slightly less than 5 km (3.1 miles). That would make it shorter than any track on this year’s calendar with an exception of Circuit de Catalunya, Hungaroring, Interlagos and Monte-Carlo.

The circuit is being built by JP Associates which is a part of a large industrial conglomerate called the Jaypee Group. The circuit is being built alongside the Yamuna Expressway, a new road being built to connect India’s capital New Delhi with the country’s biggest tourist destination, the Taj Mahal, in the city of Agra.

The road to the Indian Grand Prix has not been completely smooth. The race was originally slated for the 2010 F1 calendar but Bernie Ecclestone, the big boss of F1, confirmed it had been moved back to 2011.

In August this year the government’s sports minister M S Gill refused to support race promoter JPSK’s request for money to hold the race, claiming F1 is not a sport. Ecclestone dismissed the minister’s comments saying: “That’s his view. The rest of the world thinks it is a sport.”

Buick Regal Reintroduced

General Motors has decided to relaunch the Buick Regal. This luxury sports sedan will go on sale by the middle of next year in the US.

The Buick Regal debuted in the year 1973 and General Motors has stopped producing this car for the US market in 2004, but the model continued in China.

The new Buick Regal will deliver a driving experience that rivals the best import sport sedans in the segment like the Acura TSX and Volvo S60.

The 2011 Regal will be available with a choice of turbocharged 2.0-litre and normally aspirated 2.4-litre petrol engine. Both the engines are mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission and there are three driving modes, normal, touring and sport, to optimise the car’s dynamics the way the driver wants. The 2.0L engine will deliver a powerful horsepower of 220bhp and the 2.4L can derive a horsepower of 182 bhp.

The new Regal will run on 18-inch alloy wheels and comes with high-end audio and navigation systems as standard equipment. Suspension is MacPherson strut at the front and four-link independent set-up at the back as well as all-wheel disc brakes with Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), Brake Assist System (BAS), traction control and stability control come as standard features. Moreover, twin front airbags are standard, while side curtain airbags and rear seat airbags are optional.

The Buick Regal has been developed in Germany. General Motors says it will continue to refine and develop the Buick brand for its North American and Chinese markets.

General Motors has no plans to bring the Buick nameplate in India. Instead it will concentrate on its existing Chevrolet brand in the country.

Nano Will Not Be Exported Soon

Those of you who are expecting a foreign life of Tata Motors‘ little wonder, Nano, can hold back their thoughts for the time being. The company has now announced that it is not planning to export Nano in the near future. Instead the company wants to concentrate more on pleasing their domestic customers. After all the company is thinking in the right lines. It needs to fulfill the bonds of the native land.

The company is now concentrating on meeting the domestic demands and then shifting their interest to exporting the Nano to other countries. The company has huge pending orders and it is doubtful whether the company will be able to deliver them any sooner.

The company has cleared the safety test at the European and American countries. And we were expecting that the company has plans to launch the car in Europe and America some time soon. We thought that the ultra cheap car from Tata will be launched in the American and European countries by 2012. But now it doesn’t look so.

The company was aiming to make Nano available even to the common man in the country. And it doesn’t seem that the company would give up before it achieves this goal.

Now, there can be another reason, the company will be facing tougher competition in India, with more and more companies aiming to reach out the customers with ultra cheap cars. The auto major Nissan is planning to launch an ultra cheap car in the country, the clock maker Ajanta is another example. And so Tata will be getting ready for the struggle.

How Green Are Electric Cars

The latest fad in the automotive world is green cars. These green cars are either the hybrid cars or the electric cars. The Frankfurt Motor Show was the centre of attraction for automobile fans who support the ‘green cause’. Many car makers showcased their eco-friendly cars in an attempt to save the Earth.

But how environmental friendly are these cars?

You will be surprised to know the latest findings on electric cars. A new report by the European lobby group Transport & Environment says that electric cars could increase carbon emissions, could “speed climate change” and may not reduce oil dependency.

This is quite shocking, right?

The Transport & Environment lobby says that though electric and plug-in hybrid cars can help reduce CO2 emissions and oil consumption, but they do not play any role to solve the climate change problem.

Electric cars do not produce tailpipe emissions, but they are only as clean as their electricity supply. If the electricity used is derived from coal, then these electric cars cannot be termed as clean, eco-friendly cars.

Moreover, the electricity supply will have to be cleaned up by adding renewables to the power grid and the cars “must be more energy-efficient than state-of-the-art conventional vehicles on a ‘tank to wheel’ basis” in order to realize significant environmental benefits.

Another One-Lakh Rupee Car in the Pipeline

Guess who’s next to bring in a lakh rupee car in India!

“Maruti Suzuki?” No.

“Hyundai?” No.

“Is it Honda after a second thought?” No.

“GM or must be Ford?” No, it’s our desi clock and home appliances manufacturer Ajanta, which is famous by its brand Orpat.

Well, Ajanta is planning to buy a Chinese electric car company based in the Guangzhou province of China. The renowned quartz clock maker will then launch a sub-one-lakh-rupee car in the Indian market. To add icing to the cake, it is not just an ordinary low-cost car, it’s a low-cost electric car!

Apart from clocks and home appliances, the Rs 1,500-Crore company, which has its headquarters at Morbi in Gujarat, also makes electric bikes. It ventured in the automotive world in 2007 with the two-wheeler electric vehicles, and it manufactures around 10,000 bikes every year at its Kutch facility.

Ajanta has made a layout of Rs 100 Crore to acquire an existing assembly unit of an anonymous carmaker, which can roll out 5,000 units a year. The deal will be finalized within this year. The acquisition will help the company acquire technologies for molding, designs and battery production, among others. Furthermore, it would help in creating and establishing a new market for electric cars in India.

The company is seeking government support so that it can develop low-cost cars for the Indian market. Besides, VAT and excise duty put together make almost a fourth of the total manufacturing cost of the car. Ajanta feels that if the cost is lowered, the company can come out with battery-powered cars at Rs 1 Lakh or less.

Moreover, the clock maker has revealed that it will go with its own ‘Oreva’ brand for the cars. Oreva is derived from the names of Ajanta’s founder OR Patel and his wife Revaben.

The name is musical enough for the Indian ears and sounds like someone is addressing the REVA, calling it “Oh REVA” in a sing-song way. Carazoo.com feels it has been a good idea to adopt the brand name Overa as the name screams of an eco-friendly car like the REVA.

A prototype of the expected car is being designed and it can run 120 km per one charge of 7 units of electricity that will cost nearly Rs 35 per charge. The company has designed more than 10 battery-powered cars of four-seater and six-seater capacity. The six-seater will cost nearly Rs 1.5 lakh, while the four-seater can be available for Rs 1 lakh.
