Japan’s third largest car maker has denied its plans to bring in its luxury brand Infiniti to India.

Nissan Motor Company revealed that high import duties on Completely Built Units (CBUs), less demand for such cars, prohibitively expensive spare parts and infrastructure bottlenecks are the reason for opting out to launch the Infiniti brand. Moreover, India is a very critical market for the car major in the long run and all its investment plans and product launches are still on track.

The Infiniti car division Nissan officially started selling vehicles on November 8, 1989 in North America and its global operations have since grown to include the Middle East, South Korea, Russia, Switzerland, China and Ukraine. Infiniti began sales in additional European markets in late 2008.

But the Japanese car manufacturer is willing to introduce nine new models to the Indian car bazaar by 2012. Besides, Nissan also plans to earmark India one of its key manufacturing locations for its compact cars, which include products such as Micra.

The chief reasons cited by the company were low-cost advantage, vast pool of talented workforce, engineering expertise, etc. The low-cost, but trained manpower, thousands of component makers and easy access to growing markets make India an attractive destination for small cars.

India will be an export hub for compact cars for many countries, especially for Europe from the second half of 2010. Nissan which is scheduled to unveil its revamped Micra in March 2010 at the Geneva Motor show plans to launch the same in India after a couple of months.

It may be recalled that in the past Toyota has refuted to launch its luxury brand ‘Lexus’ in India and Honda has said no to ‘Acura’.

Too bad that Nissan wont introduce the Infiniti brand cars to India. Hope Nissan does not drop its plan to roll out the Z370 roadster in India.
