Good news for MUV lovers. A new Multi Utility Vehicle (MUV) is expected from the Maruti Suzuki stable by the end of this year. As the Finance Minister has provided an excise cut to petrol driven vehicles in the MUV category, Maruti is ready with a new model called O2.
Maruti Suzuki India Limited is planning to terminate the production of its Multi Purpose Vehicle (MPV) Versa as Versa could not live up to its expectations. India’s largest car manufacturer is counting on its new MUV to be its winning horse in this segment.
The Maruti Suzuki Versa has been a flop since it debuted in 2001. It could barely notch 50 units a month. The O2 will be a small MPV based on the Versa platform and is expected to priced between Rs 3.5-4 Lakh.
Though Maruti usually sticks to one product a year and has already launched the Ritz this year, it hopes to launch the O2 to tap the opportunities in the MUV segment. The largest Indian carmaker expects strong margins on O2 since the Versa platform is highly depreciated and includes over 80 per cent local content.
Not only Mahindra and Tata or Toyota, but also Maruti does have a limited presence in the multi utility vehicle through its small minivans.
Maruti’s move will be closely watched by Mahindra-Renault which is considering to launch the MPV variant of its Logan.

I think this was the only segment the car maker was lagging behind. Though it has Versa in its product line but the this model was a mere failure.Very limited numbers were actually seen on the roads. But instead of the Versa platform the company should have opted for a new platform. With the same base it will carry the same structure of Versa which is really outdated.
I think the MUV market has well been captured by Mahindra Xylo because of its Value For Money. Or Should we say Value for less money.
I think Xylo is a better option over MUV's like toyota innova and maruti suzuki O2 because Xylo is a MPV (Multi Purpose Vehicle). There is no doubt that xylo packs in many more features than a MUV like Innova or O2.
