Peugeot-Citroen scouting for land in India

French Automotive major PSA Peugeot-Citroen is planning to set up a production plant in Hyderabad and Chennai. The French giant had an earlier futile outing in India about 11 years ago when it inked an agreement with Doshis of Premier Padmini but the deal went kaput for some genuine reason.

Now the company is trying to get a foothold of the Indian automotive sector by setting up a manufacturing unit in India. It is said that a senior official from the Peugeot visited the Pearl city and also had a discussion with the Andhra Pradesh Industrial Infrastructure Corporation and state Industries department.

Government of Andhra Pradesh as a result of the discussion has agreed to allocate 1,000 acres site for the project. The same site was once offered to the Tata Nano project when it experienced hurdles in West Bengal. Government of AP has promised a 100 percent exemption from value added tax (VAT) for 21 years for companies investing more than Rs 4,000 crore in the state. The French automaker is exploring other locations in AP, Tamil Nadu and Maharashtra for the project.

The French car manufacturer seems to have held talks for an alliance with many partners in India. Indian roads could see a car from the Peugeot-Citroen stable in a span of two years if everything goes in accordance to their plans. While Peugeot will stand as a mainstream brand, Citroen will aim at the high end models.

  1. Finally this french car brand is coming to India. One of my cousin has a Peugeot car and i really like it. I have also driven it and the performance is very good and smooth. But 2 years is a pretty long.

  2. I have seen many Peugeot cars but some how i am not that impressed with its styling. If this brand was that good then why didn't it make its debut in India earlier. Still now the car manufacturer is hunting for a local vendor in India and the hunt is on. Why other car manufacturers are not so eager to tie up with them. Is the car brand not that reliable? Can any one tell me what segment they belong to. I dont know much about this brand and that is why i am curious to know about it more.I want to know what price range they belong to, category like if they belong to luxury segment. Please provide me with this information.
