Legendary Porsche 917 celebrates its 40th anniversary with a big bang. This iconic racing car made its first debut in the Geneva Motor Show on March 13 forty years ago. And you would be amazed to know that just in a span of one month 25 cars were produced and sold out in the market. Since then the car has retained its position as one of the most successful racing cars of all time.
The first introduction of Porsche was powered by a 4.5-liter engine that generated an astounding 520 horsepower. It was artistically designed to meet the demands and requirements of different racetracks. The company had also introduced the ‘short-tail model’ that was actually designed to suit the needs of heavily twisting roads that required high contact pressure for fast cornering. On the other end, a ‘long-tail model’ was introduced for fast racetracks.

Then in 1972 Porsche introduced a new variant of the 917 with turbocharged engine that produced an awesome horsepower of 1,000 bhp. As and when new technologies came into existence Porsche continuously made efforts to fit them in its legendary 917 so that the car can be compatible to the changing needs and demands of the industry.
You would be glad to know that the Porsche Turbo 911 that we rejoice today is also an advanced version of the iconic 917. The 911 was a result of Porsche’s efforts to transfer the racing technologies that powered 917 to on-road sports cars.
Even today the Porsche 917 is tagged as one of the ‘greatest racing car of the automotive history’. It’s been 40 years the car is rejoicing this position and expects to retain the same in years to come.

I never heard about this car. I have always heard about Ferrari and Mercedes-Benz when it comes to racing. And from no where today I read that Porsche 917 is one of the greatest racing car in the history of automobiles. It’s late to know but good to know the fact.
