Everything is undergoing a transformation with changing generation and so is the car industry. One of the biggest generational changes in car industry is the new K-series petrol engine.
India’s largest car manufacturer, the Maruti Suzuki, is working to introduce this next generation engine technology in all the car models. The production of this series of engine has already been started at Manesar in Haryana. The current production is restricted for the upcoming global car Maruti A Star.
The K-series engine is to be manufactured in compliance to the Euro 4- and Euro 5-emission norms. It is also believed to be one of the highly efficient engines.
Currently, Maruti has four types of engines, F-series, two variants of G-series and M-series. But unfortunately all these are not in accordance to the Bharat 4 emission norms which are soon to be implemented in India. With respect to this, Maruti plans to fit the new K-series engine in all its existing car models and make them compliant to the norms.

K series - is this same as the Hyundai kappa engine fitted in Hyundai i10 or is it different?
It’s good to hear that the K-series engine is in compliance with Euro 4 and Euro 5 emission norms. Compliance with the emission norms clearly states low vehicular emission, which in turn means a better ecological balance. India really needs a vehicle like this.
The K factor is coming!!! With A Star, one can find the K series petrol engine the next generation engine. Great news that it meets Euro 4 and 5 norms, and is highly efficient. With its efficiency lets see will "A Star & K" really become a star in these days of fuel scarcity and price hike.
Hi Parinita. I am not much sure about the differences but I am sure both the engines have one common goal- to deliver better fuel economy. K series engine is believed to be fitted in Maruti cars. The first 1.2l k series engine is to be fitted in the upcoming car Maruti A star and the first Kia Kappa engine is fitted in Hyundai i10.
Yes, the engine capacity is the most probable difference between both the engines but I think my friend Ramesh has forgotten other differences. Maruti’s k series engine is being produced in Manesar in Harayana whereas Hyundai’s kappa engine is being produced in its Chennai plant. I have also heard they both differ in weight also. Kappa engine has a dry weight of about 82.4 kg but not much sure about the k series engine.
Hi Ramesh! You have mentioned that "The first 1.2l k series engine is to be fitted in the upcoming car Maruti A star ". i would like to correct you that it is the A-star will be launched with the 1L K-series engine initially and later will roll out 1.2L engine for A-Star.
Hi Sanskriti. First of all I should apologise for giving wrong information on the engine capacity of Maruti A Star. I also thank you for updating the information. Now I think the distinction between K series engine and kappa engine is clear. K series engine is a 1l engine and kappa engine is a 1.2l engine.
This blog is very informative. i never knew that there are different types of engines used.can any one tell me how this K-series engine is different than other engines used by Maruti Suzuki?
dear Ramesh!
Thank you for taking the error in positive way.As i was aware of this information it was my duty to correct you.
