Electric cars and CNG cars are the current wave in the automotive industry. The hike in fuel prices have definitely cut down the sale of petrol cars and increase the demand of CNG cars.
Along with CNG, electric cars have also established a strong platform on the sands of Indian car market. Currently, we only have two electric cars, Reva Maini and Garuda. There are car manufacturers who are working on to produce electric versions of their various car models. But is it good to work on electric versions? Or CNG versions are preferable?
During this era when the infrastructure is not so strong in the country, the industry will benefit more by producing CNG comply engines rather than wasting time to design purely electric engines. This is because India has a huge shortage of electricity. In the recent time, power cut has become a usual thing in most of the metro cities. Even today there are few villages in the country that live in dark the entire year. That’s shocking but that’s the truth.
With such an infrastructure and shortage of power, how can electric cars win the car race? Yes, of course once the power shortage issue is solved, electric cars will top the race. But till then, CNG cars are better.
Today, most of the gas pump stations provide CNG. It is one of the cheapest fuels with the lowest running costs. One kilogram of CNG costs about Rs 22 and the fuel gives a running cost of about Rs 1.3/km. This clearly dictates that one kg of CNG will run the car for one whole month.
Then, what do you decide - Electric or CNG?

It is nice to know that car makers are rolling out electric cars and CNG cars. Other than a solution to the raising fuel price, it is also an Eco-friendly car.But for how long the electric cars will run in India, as we are already facing power shortage.
Electric Cars vs. CNG Cars
For which will you go for, I've decided, I'm going for electric car. Its pollution free and easy to ride. for two its more than enough. But will have to compromise with looks, and have to sacrifice long drives. But being environment friendly and economical, electric car is my first choice.
I think that CNG cars are much better than electric cars. I dont know about the future but currently with the frequent power cut issues, electric cars are simply a waste.
I think this is not the right time to say anything about electric cars. In recent couple of months I have heard that electric car, Reva had faced a tough time. The main reason was the unscheduled power cut in Indian cities especially in Mumbai, Bangalore and Delhi. With so long hours of load shedding, it was really difficult for people to charge their Reva and drive to office. I have seen some of my neighbors using an auto to go to office. Bad, their cars were parked in the premises just because there was no electricity to charge.
Hi Nany, how are u? I think we don’t have Reva in Mumbai then how can Mumbaikars face a similar situation that Bangalorians have faced during the long unscheduled power cut. Yes, I accept that in Bangalore, people have faced a tough time when they had shortage of electricity to charge their electric cars.
Kee, I just stated that these cities face a tough time because of load shedding. I never meant to say that Reva Maini had a tough time in Mumbai. Anyways, the final statement states that this is not the right time to bring electric cars to India.
The price of oil is up, gas guzzling cars are out, and a race for a fuel-free, practical electric car is on. The creative folks at Silicon Valley California have caught on the frenzy by investing tens of millions to develop a viable electric car, not just a hybrid.
A key factor electric cars never took off has always been the battery technology. Currently, all batteries used in Hybrid Cars are nickel-metal hydride (NiMH) battery packs claimed to last throughout the car’s lifetime with little degradation in power capability. This is in contrast to our experience with cell phones whereby our NiMH batteries’ longevity wanes over shorter and shorter usage time between charges.
With this enters the lithium-ion batteries to the scene. These are the batteries you use for you notebooks which seems to have a longer lifespan with lesser recharge wastage. Conquering this for the electric hybrid car has become the sole driver and objective of the environmentally-conscious hi-tech Venture Capitalists of Silicon Valley, who pour 10s of millions of dollars into developing the lithium-ion battery driven electric car.
Electric car is a very good idea to save environment. But electric cars have a limited speed(maximum 60-70 km/hr) I have a design which can increase that speed up to 100 km/hr. If you want to know more about this design so contact me. my Email ID is rockygpatel@gmail.com
